This is a great book to read to infants. The pull-tab system is much less vulnerable to rips than lift-the-flap, and the very simple story remains clever. A spin in the washing machine for Teddy is my favorite part.

My daughter absolutely loved this book when she was younger. Her little brother also loved it, but unfortunately he also loved pulling things apart, and even this durable pulltab book did not survive. I bought another just to put away as a keepsake for her - it's that good.

Start here. Other books are too complicated-and overwrought with needless detail and over sophisticated recipes. Ya just gotta do it to get good at it and this book makes it easy.

Easy to get on making your own hooch of every kind outa your neighbors leftover fruit-yahooooo.

Swept Away: The best digest on the Johnstown Flood
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-18
After a brief visit to the Johnstown Flood National Park in Pennsylvania, I started digging at my local library for books and videos. I found this book, which was also for sale in the Park gift shop.

I found this to be very readable. Lots of photos and illustrations that broke up what could have been a very dry, but dramatic text... as a result, this book works for BOTH kids and adults. It frequently refers back to the definitive work from 1968, David McCullough's "Johnstown Flood"... but is a much briefer book designed to tell all sides of the story and illustrates it as well.

From the graphic cover painting, to the wide margins and easy to read type face, this book has been positioned to stand on most school library shelves.... The only problem is that it won't stay there long enough for you to find it.

A fine gift for those of any age who are interested in the Greatest Flood disaster in the USA, that helped to launch the American Red Cross to national prominence.

Definitely consider this book! Reasonably priced, very accessable, recently published in 2000.

*(Now, I'm looking for the other books in the series....)
Enjoy!

PS: I also found the PBS America Experience "The Johnstown Flood" video and thought it did a WONDERFUL job of telling the tale... with emphasis on the life around the lake and townspeople's lives BEFORE the flood. The actually depiction of the flood is fairly short, and comes late in the program, but very worth waiting for. The original short 20 minute documentary won an academy award, and the hour-long expanded video will not disappoint. WARNING: Avoid the Descriptive Audio for the visually handicapped version, unless you need help. The skillful narration sandwiched between the original narrator's voice is distracting and spoils the mood. [David McCullough does a stand-up intro and close at the National Park display too!)
But do watch any version you can find at your library, or order it from Public Broadcasting Service or your local station.!!!!)

A book that presents the story well to young readers.

The 1889 Johnstown Flood is a story that is frequently difficult to tell to children, but with this book, Mr. Gallagher succeeds.

He tells the story honestly, and, most importantly, he does not "dumb down" the story.

Text is well researched and presented, and the illustrations are expertly chosen.

After using this book, which both kids and adults should enjoy, the reader will have a true appreciation for why the Johnstown Flood is such a significant story, and one that cannot be forgotten.

This is a sweet book. My daughter is 3 and loves to read, she has been asking for some lift the flap books so I tried this one. She loves it and the simple large text is perfect for her burgeoning word recognition. I have since ordered Kipper's Sunny Day.

My son loves this book in conjunction with the Sunny Day Lift the Flap book.

This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Kirsten Larson, a nine-year-old girl from Sweden, whose family has moved to frontier Minnesota of 1854. This book takes place during the same timeframe as Changes for Kirsten, after the fire in their home, and before the father returns from logging. When the two mothers and Lars go into town to shop, Kirsten and her younger siblings and cousins are left alone. Trouble comes in the form of a surprise snowstorm that leaves the children snowbound. Now it is up to Kirsten and her cousins to be responsible, and take care of themselves and the baby.

This is another wonderful story, with a great lesson in responsibility. As always, the illustrations are excellent and a real addition to the story. The final chapter includes a group of newspaper snowstorm stories from a 1888 newspaper, and then a number of ideas on what to do during a snow day.

[For those adults interested in reading adult historical fiction about Swedish immigrants, please consider reading The Emigrants series by Vilhelm Moberg.]

Inspired! Hope is present on every page expressed beside the stark protrayal of the consequences of carbon combustion. The analogous use of mythology creates a balanced view of timeless humankind. The message of this book has been inside of me since birth and looking for kinship expression for at least thirty years. Thank you Michael Osborne!

Lightland presents a truly global perspective on energy. It makes connections between the factual and the intuitive that are rare in other books on climate change science. This fascinating philosophical discourse should be essential reading for anyone involved in making energy policy.

We love the Little Red Car books. Too bad they seem to have gone out of print, because in our house, they are classics. They feature sturdy, inventive pop up gimmicks and a lovable car as the main character. Perfect for 2-3 year olds.

Keeps him occupied.

A fun, transportation oriented pop up book, like the Ken Wilson Max transporation series, but simpler, and so slightly more durable. This book and one other of the Little Red Car series kept my two year old fascinated during a difficult airplane ride and dinner out with his grandparents. He particularly loved the page where the little red car sleds down the side of the hill.

I highly recommend it!

Marine Climate, Weather and Fisheries: The Effects of Weather and Climatic Changes On Fisheries and Ocean Resources

Excellent and Readable

I've owned this book for many years and still refer back to it, especially during these times climate change. Taivo Laevastu was a genius. This book is one greatest works available for the undergrad, grad or researcher. This work is applicable across the marine, oceans and atmospheric disciplines.

The material in this book will also help researchers further investigate some of the first data concerning the Pacific Decadal, Artic and North Atlantic Ocillations. Though these climate patterns weren't understood at the time of this writing, Taivo's research and those cited in the book create a base-line of observations and data.

Another excellent resource is the works of Dr. Michitaka Uda, however his work is still in Japanese and needs to be translated. Both of these men are the pillars of modern fisheries and fisheries oceanographic thought.
