Gail Gibbons has the best books for kids. I can see why educators use this books in the classroom. The concepts are broken down into easily understandable parts; great for little kids!

I checked out a gob of weather books when teaching my first-graders. This one was by far the best. It explained the weather in a simple, easy manner with wonderful illustrations. But it was not a 'baby' book. The author covered a wide variety of weather topics in language that engaged and taught. In a few short, clear sentences we were able to learn how to identify clouds or the types of wind and rain storms. I plan on purchasing this book since it will be used over and over for reference and for just plain fun.
Great book for young students learning about weather.

I am a student teahcer. When I had to plan a unit for my kindergarteners about weather, I did not know how to teach it on their level. This book really helped me to come up with the right words to help the students understand what I was trying to get across to them. GREAT BOOK!!! I checked it out from the library at the school I am working at; however, I WILL be getting my own personal copy. Thank you Gail!!!

Originally published in 1946 by Lippincott, with illustrations by Tibor Gergely, this new Meadow Gees Press edition of Karen Jerome's beautifully drawn and colored artwork adds a splendid visual element to a classic and engaging poem written by Nancy Byrd Turner in When It Rained Cats And Dogs. The poem tells the story of a day when it literally rained cats and dogs, each falling harmlessly into the arms of a child. The illustrations realistically capture a variety of breeds while at the same time imparting a cheerful sense of fun. This poem-based picture book is wonderful reading for children and would be a very welcome addition to any school or community library collection.

I picked up this book because I loved the illustrations and the author lives in Bucks Co., Pa (as do I). Well, my four year old son and I just loved it. And it made for good conversation after. The author addresses in such a nice, comfortable way what happens to flowers, fish, deer, birds and caterpillars in the winter. The illustrations are just beautiful and cozy. A wonderful winter book--or any time really.

I saw this book in my child's school book order and just had to have it. My son was not so convinced, but reluctantly agreed to order it. Now he loves it! The author has put into words a story that I can share with my son the world that I grew up in. The poetry and pictures just completely draw us in.

Tested in the furnace of suffering, Vernon Brewer shares piercing insights into why God allows pain, suffering, and testing, in the lives of Christians.
These experiences are sometimes designed to test what we really believe. In his book "Why? Answers to Weather the Storms of Life," Vernon shares from his personal experience how he met these challenges head-on.
Brewer is a cancer survivor. He shares how he faced the many trials and tests, both physical and spiritual in his own time of testing. I appreciated Vernon's openness, frankness, and his vulnerability as he told of defeats and victories in these intense battles. He compares his struggle with cancer to the "storms of lfe" we all face, financial, family crisis, broken relationships, and loneliness.
His writing is filled with promise, encouragement, and specific life lessons he learned through his personal "battle" with cancer. Vernon shares how he "experienced" the act of reaching out in genuine compassion. His message is global in perspective. Brewer relates how the World Help organizatin (an Iternational mission's agency) developed as a result his having cancer.
I was deeply moved as I grasped, again, the scope of the message of God's faithfulness, His love, and of the unique purpose of God for my life. I am trusting God afresh for answers to the Why? How? And what's going to happen to me?
"Why?" is a book for everyone facing these questions, looking for hope, while working through, pain, suffering, and disappointment. This is an amazing testimony of finding "Triumph through Tragedy."

Extremely informative and "reader friendly" with practical and easy-to-apply methods of using airborne radar to its fullest potential, this book should be required in every ground school and is a must for all pilots who utilize radar in their day-to-day operations.

"Blown Away" is a welcome addition to the growing list of Harlow's amazing historical novels. The characters are well-drawn and unique, and the plot twists and turns with fascinating details of time and place until it inexorably plunges the young reader into the turbulent midst of one of the worst hurricanes ever to hit the U.S.A. No one can fail to identify with the characters as they face terror and death. There has been much in the news about recent storms such as Katrina. Experiencing this beautifully-written book will give young readers a more authentic feeling of what it is like to actually be caught up in the horror of such a storm. "Blown Away" is an exciting journey from beginning to end.

This slim book, by Cambridge meteorology lecturer Ross Reynolds is a practical, invaluable guide for all those influenced directly or indirectly by the weather (which is all of us). Reynolds elaborates: "Amongst other things, this book outlines a grounding in meteorology for those who want to gain a basic understanding of what makes the weather `tick,' and to appreciate what lies behind some of today's great atmospheric environmental issues.
Each chapter of this nine-chapter book begins with a brief summary:
(1) The Atmosphere
"Before looking at the weather in detail, it is necessary to set the scene by explaining some basic facts about the atmosphere's chemical make-up, its structure and layering, and what drives it to on a global scale. This basic knowledge will help you understand subsequent chapters."
(2) Weather Observation
"Many people take more than just a conversational interest in the atmosphere by recording weather measurements at home. In some countries, there are networks of enthusiasts who produce regular newsletters that often include members' observations. The advent of the internet has facilitated even wider links between observers on an intercontinental scale."
(3) Weather Mapping
"Portraying the elements of both the `actual' weather and its forecast state as a...map, for one instant, is crucial in...meteorology. Satellite and radar `images' also aid in the visualization of extensive [weather] detail in a quickly [non-overwhelming] form. Much of the complexity of the atmosphere is, and will remain, summarized in map form that is truly international language for meteorology."
(4) Global Weather
"It is important to understand the links between patterns of global [atmospheric] pressure, circulation, temperature, humidity, and precipitation before investigating individual weather-producing disturbances such as...hurricanes and typhoons."
(5) How the Weather Works
"Every day, we all experience one facet or another of the weather, even if this is only the view from a window on a dull day...What makes the wind blow? How do clouds form and stay in the sky? How do they produce rain, snow, and drizzle? Why are there different types of fog? How do dew and frost form? These topics [and more] are discussed in this chapter."
(6) Weather Forecasting
"To most people, the main aim of the meteorologist is to prepare and present a weather forecast. Furthermore, television is probably the most common medium through which they obtain information on what is likely to happen over the next day or so weather-wise."
(7) Hazardous Weather
"In many parts of the world, the most common natural hazard to effect society is the weather. Its impact may be very short lived-from the disastrous transit of a tornado, to the potentially devastating passage of widespread gales that may last a day or so-or much more extensive, such as widespread flooding that may persist for weeks, or drought that may last for a season."
(8) World Holiday Weather
"This chapter gives general information on the duration of various aspects of the climate, at a variety of holiday and other locations." (Note that this chapter provides a graph for monthly temperature, monthly rainfall, and monthly sunlight for each location or city profiled. This information is particularly useful for travelers.)
(9) Environmental Issues
"During the last decade or so, we have become more aware of global or near-global changes in the atmosphere that have occurred naturally or through the activities of [humans]...El Nino, global warming, and the `hole' in the ozone layer are three environmental issues that are described in detail in this chapter."
In a few places within this book are internet addresses for major sites that provide up-to-date details of various topics within weather and climate.
This book has more than 300 illustrations (photographs, satellite imagery, maps, or diagrams), most in color. Also included are graphs, tables and charts. In fact, almost every page of this book contains at least one illustration, graph, table, or chart.
Finally, there is a handy glossary that provides definitions of common (examples: "precipitation," "snow") and uncommon (examples: "cut-off," "southern oscillation") weather terms.
In conclusion, this book concisely and adequately explains a fascinating subject important to all of us--the weather!!
