Great Book For Anyone!

I honestly believe that after reading this book, anyone will be able to confidently discuss global warming topics from an objective viewpoint.

Dr. Archer wrote this book after teaching a course with the same title for several years. His writing style is as great as his lecture style - non-intimidating, humorous, well-explained examples and analogies, and he teaches the science behind the famous words "global warming". There is no arm-waving or magical answer. The descriptive text encourages the reader to find answers themselves via simple calculations. In addition, several fun and relevant web-based models are included. For example, in one model, you can calculate how the earth's temperature may change if you increase the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. In another, you can play with the supply of fossil fuels and predict how long it will be before we run out.

I've been a teaching assistant to Dr. Archer for two years, and his lectures, which this book is partially based on, have helped students with no previous background understand the science behind global warming, and enjoy themselves while doing it. But as a graduate student, I still find myself consulting his book for general facts about the carbon cycle or atmosphere. It truly is a book that can be enjoyed at any level of background, especially today, when global warming is such a hot (no pun intended) topic. I've read the book each year, and look forward to reading it again. Definitely a great buy!

There are some annoying typographical errors in this book, otherwise I would give
it five stars --- visit the book's website for a list of errata.

Plenty of books tell you about global warming, but this book really does
dymystify the nuts and bolts of how climate scientists know what they
say they know. The book says it is based on a course for non-scientists and
it shows --- the explanations are clearly honed from experience of explaining
scientific concepts to non-scientists. It is always difficult for scientists
in any field to convey the depth of knowledge which has accumulated over
a long period of time to people coming from other disciplines, but this book
does a pretty good job.

Excellent undergrad-level description of the climate

Review Date: 2007-04-05
The climate books by Flannery, Kolbert, etc. tend to be anecdotal, with qualitative descriptions of how the climate works. While I think those books are valuable, what's been missing is a more technical description of the physics of the climate system that's accessible to people who aren't physics majors. This book is it. It serves as a bridge between the fully qualitative books and highly technical textbooks requiring calculus. There is some math in it, so math-phobes might approach it with caution. I think the book would be especially useful to scientists or grad students who want to know something about the climate problem, but don't want to invest a lot of time in reading dense textbooks or journal articles. I'm going to have my incoming grad students who did not major in atmospheric sciences read it in order to educate themselves quickly about the climate.

I wish to commend this wonderful book written by my colleague, David Archer. The class upon which this book is based is a runaway success, and each year it seems they need to find a bigger lecture hall. When you have read the books like "The Weather Makers," and "Field Notes from a Catastrophe," and are ready for something more quantitative but still fairly gentle on the math, this is the one for you. I think it's the best source around for people who want to get a true scientific understanding of the physics and chemistry of climate change.

Mr. Moore provides a superb framework for understanding how to create competitive advantage in a time of unrelenting pressure on our time. As an E-commerce manager, I found myself challenging my current priorities against "the verities of time, truth, trust, and privacy." This book is incredibly thought provoking.

This is a delightful book: it is smart but easy to read. The author burns images and analogies into your mind that are unforgetable. In particular, I cannot forget his treatment of time and privacy. These are the best descriptions of the problems of privacy in the internet and in the compression of time that I have ever read. Overall, this book makes you think but flows easily and conversationally. He is dealing with big issues in an accessible way.

As with his previous books, the author/illustrator has put a strong visual signature on this work, which is simple without being simplistic.

I had the pleasure of meeting him before this was published during a workshop, and he shared his sketches and the storyline...He was very gracious, and has a genuine appreciation for the worldview of children.

My 3 year-old, by the way, loved reading this book...she especially enjoyed finding all the kittens on each page.

This is a great story about a little kitten who can't wait for it to snow, even though its siblings all worry about getting cold and wet... Eric Rohmann celebrates the value of curiosity and adventuresome, positive thinking... and plus, it has lots of pictures of cute little kittens. Graphically strong, with a nice, positive message. Recommended! (ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

It isn't often that I find a children's book through the "Wall Street Journal". Last January, this delightful book was described amidst the stock prices and financial news.

"Once there were four kittens who had never heard of snow." Eric Rohmann's lovely illustration shows three kittens looking at a fourth deep in a mailbox. Only his butt is showing, and the mail is falling like snow.

One kitten is an adventurer who embraces the new; the other three are cautious and apprehensive.

Falling postcards show winter scenes:

"Snow scares me!"
"When winter comes, the snow will fall and fall and we'll be cold!"
"Cold to the tips of our tails!"
The contrarian kitten says: "I can't wait."

The seasons pass, three kittens fret about snow. The fourth lives in happy anticipation.

Snow arrives. Three kittens hide beneath carpets and furniture; one kitten frolics. The story ends happily for all four: "I can't wait!"

The pictures enhance this charmer; kids between three and five will be enchanted. I suspect a few hard headed traders will be too. I sure was.

Caldecott Medal Winner (My Friend Rabbit), Eric Rohmann, has created another charming picture book that shows respect for a child's fear of the unknown, while also illustrating the power of a positive attitude.

There are four little kittens who have never seen snow. Three of them spend Spring, Summer and Fall worrying about how cold and wet snow will make everything. The fourth kitten just keeps saying, "I can't wait." The fourth kitten's attitude is so wonderful...

I bought this book for my 3 year old daughter, whose name is Lucia. What a beautifully illustrated book, and what a great message. Girls, even little girls, can be strong, brave, capable, and independent..and endure. This message, as well as love, family, and sacrifice, weaves through a pint sized mystery and adventure. I was just as captivated by the story as my children were! A gem!

Perfect for read-aloud.

Phyllis Root's LUCIA AND THE LIGHT tells of Lucia and her family, who lead a contented life in a cabin high in the mountains - until one day someone steals the sun away. It's up to Lucia to undertake a journey to find it, even though she's poor and without resources. This folk story comes from Nordic roots and provides a fine inspirational tale paired with gorgeous drawings by Mary Grandpre, making it perfect for read-aloud.

i'm a huge fan of mary grandpre's artistry, and have bought all the books i can get my hands on she has illustrated, but one thing i most love is when the story is beautiful, like sea chest, or the illustrations are so beautiful you barely notice the story, like batwings and the curtain of the night. (story's not bad either) this is based on a nordic myth and somehow mary captures the warmth and sweetness of the story, lucia's courage and perserverance, and the landscape exactly right. for those families with kittycats, there's a very nice one in this story featured in the illustrations. as to the story, it shows lucia's courage and self sacrifice for her family, which is a great thing in this age of entitlement.

Mary Grandpre's full page luminous pastel paintings are perfect companions for this tale set in the snow covered far North.

Lucia, her mother and baby brother lived in a small house at the foot of a mountain. It was the coldest winter Lucia had ever known. Why, wind came through the cracks in their house and "tossed the last of the flour in the barrel around."

Even worse, the sun did not come up, not for three days. It was total darkness. Lucia's mother hugged her and said, "We will be each other's sun until the real sun returns."

However, the constant night made the baby fretful and their cow gave no milk, so Lucia went out into the cold to look for the sun. Her little white cat had jumped into the hood of her jacket so she was not alone. This was fortunate as it took her a long time to climb the mountain and she was so tired that she lay down in the snow. Fortunately, her cat bit her chin and awakened her or she might have frozen there just like old Bjorn "frozen stiff and hard as cordwood."

What she did not know was that fearsome trolls lived on that mountain. They taunted and teased Lucia, telling her a rag ball was the sun. As it turned out they were no match for a little girl and her cat.

Young readers will enjoy this story from Nordic lore, and admire the courage of a small child.

I took Tom Garrison's class at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA. Wonderful class! He taught along with the book and every session was both insightful and interesting. Dr. Garrison is without a match in instructional etiquette and eloquence. Indeed, this book showcases his best work on the subject. Read the book... Be educated by the diagrams and charts... Be taken back at the amazing realms of life under the ocean... And most of all, be in awe of a marvelous earth (or "Oceanus") that is in great need of our consideration right now. Otherwise we end up dead like the aliens... Oops.. I hope I did't give a way the ending! If you have few bucks, come and take the class at OCC. You will be so glad you did. Just don't come in late through one of the side doors, or leave your cell phone on. He can't STAND those things! It drives him CRAZY!

In the third installment of the exciting ACRO (Agency for Covert Rare Operatives) series by Sydney Croft we meet Wyatt Kennedy, one of ACRO's special agents. Wyatt possesses the gifted powers of telekinesis and a sexual mojo so strong that it will drive any person around him into some highly sexual behavior. The only bad or good thing about his sexual gift is anyone who spends the night with him will never remember the event or him the next time they meet. Wyatt has been sent into deep cover by ACRO on a mission where he is surrounded by ACRO's enemy, Itor a rival agency that uses their power for bad. Itor currently possess the "weather machine" which could steer or strengthen any existing storms which in the wrong hands could be deadly. For this mission Wyatt is so deep under cover that most of the people at ACRO thinks he is dead. His mission is to destroy the weather machine before Itor uses it to create storms so deadly that causalities could be high.

Faith Black is also interested in the weather machine but for reasons other then destroying it. Someone has her twin sister and is demanding she retrieves the weather machine from Itor in exchange for her sister. Faith is also a special agent who has special biokinetic capabilities. Faith hasn't seen her sister in years. They were separated after her sister was taken away at a young age.

Wyatt and Faith meet up one night after Faith ducks into the bar to avoid being followed by an enemy. After successfully escaping the enemy with Wyatt's help Faith and Wyatt spend a night of hot, steamy and dangerous sex. Thinking they'll never meet again Wyatt is surprise to find Faith on the oil rig where he is deep undercover the next day. He is even more shocked to realize that Faith remembers everything from the night before.

Where to begin? I loved, loved, and loved every moment and every page of this book. I inhaled all 368 pages of SEDUCED BY THE STORM in one sitting. This is one of the top 5 on my paranormal series list. The dynamic duo of Larissa Ione and Stephanie Tyler has done it again in this third installment of the ACRO series. I think this is the best one yet of the series. Everything fell into place nicely with the world building and character growth. It was great to see some previous characters making appearances. This book also ties up storylines that have been progressing through the previous two books which the fans will appreciate.

Fans "be warned" this one will make you cry. So have tissues handy. The sexual chemistry between Wyatt and Faith was off the charts. I mean from the first meeting until the end these two will keep you hot and bothered and so will the many other storylines. Wyatt and Faith were flawed which I loved. They weren't perfect which made them perfect for each other. The fact that they have reasons not to trust one another definitely drove this storyline. It was done nicely without any unnecessary complications.

Faith is another kick ass heroine who holds her own against Wyatt. Croft does not do wilting flower heroines which I appreciate nor are the heroines too stupid to live in my opinion. Wyatt is another strong alpha male who just radiates strength, sexiness, and smarts. We also meet some new characters that have caught my eye which I'm hoping we'll eventually get stories for them sometime in the future.

Two strong and highly trained special agents on a mission to retrieve the same deadly machine lead this reader on an intensely, exciting, sexy, fast paced, and action pack adventure. Will they stop Itor, will Faith save her sister, and can they trust each other? You'll have to run out and pick up this book to find out. Pick up a box fan too because Sydney Croft writes some freaking great sex! I highly recommend this series. You don't necessarily have to read them in order but things would definitely make more sense if you do get the previous two books which are RIDING THE STORM and UNLEASHING THE STORM. There is an ACRO story in HOT NIGHTS, DARK DESIRES Anthology but the storyline doesn't connect with the rest of the books.

Animal whisperer Kira Donovan works at a wildlife refuge taking care of all types of animals. But she has more in common with animals than just being able to communicate with them. Every year, for a certain amount of time, she goes into "heat," meaning she has to have sex every four hours, or she dies. She takes care of it by hiring farm hands to help her on the refuge, and to help her in bed.

When the two hands she'd hired this year disappear, she's surprised to find two more on her doorstep, Derek and Tom. She's immediately attracted to Tom, and fixates on him to help her with her heat. What she doesn't know is that Tom "Ender" Knight has been sent by ACRO, the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives, to recruit her into their organization. If he can't do that, he has orders to kill her.

Ender's been told about Kira's needs, and he's ready to do his job, until he meets her. And when he sees Derek, whom he knows is an operative for ITOR, ACRO's enemy, he knows he has to eliminate him. Then, despite his best efforts, when Kira wobbles on joining ACRO he knows he can't kill her. But she agrees to go with him to check things out. He just needs to get her there alive, and away from ITOR's operatives. And they need to survive her heat cycle while they're on the run from the bad guys.

If you haven't read any of Sydney Croft's books in the ACRO series, you're missing a thrill ride packed with emotion and hot passion. Reading Unleashing the Storm was like visiting old friends. The ACRO bunch is realistic and entertaining, and the fact that they're trying to save the world makes them that much more attractive to me.

Ender is the ultimate bad boy, carrying around the weight of his job and past deeds. I absolutely adored the way he and Kira blended together, and the way they worked through their problems. It's one of those books I just couldn't put down. I loved the first book, Riding the Storm, and now I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the third novel, Seduced by the Storm.

Sydney Croft has crafted a series that is not to be missed. It includes danger, intrigue, romance and sex. What more could a reader ask for? Unleashing the Storm is fantastic, and I am happy to Joyfully Recommend it.

I loved this book. This is about Wyatt and Faith who are both operatives on diffrent sides. They meet in a bar and have hot sex and when he is going to leave he touches her face and tells her he wishes she would remember him tomorrow because he has a sexual power that the women forget him the next day. He sees her again and she remembers him, oh its true love lol. But I like how she has other character stories going but Wyatt and Faith are still what this book is about and how they struggle to trust and love each other. There are some heart renching moments in this book. More from Creed and Anika which were awesome. Oh poor Dev, that all Ill say, cant give to many secrets away. Don't have to have read the other 2 in the series, but I definatly would recomend because they are just as good.
This series really is getting better with each book. You get such in dept characater development and then the on goings of Creed and Anika Yum!

Estimates are the weather machine can easily destroy half the earth. Thus his superiors at the Agency for Covert Rare Operatives (ACRO) order American operative Wyatt Kennedy to destroy the machine before pandemic destruction is unleashed. At the same, The Aquarius Group (TAG) sends biokinetic agent Englishwoman Faith Black to obtain the weather machine for they have plans for this device.

In a bar, Wyatt and Faith meet and are immensely attracted to one another; they enjoy the tryst and though each wants more, both assume th9s is a one night stand. However, they are each concerned when they realize they are after the same target for different handlers with differing objectives. Still they team up with neither fully trusting the other once they gain the machine. In between dodging assassins, they share heated lovemaking with both wondering how their heart will survive the betrayal each expects from the other or themselves.

The third stormy romantic suspense erotic fantasy (see UNLEASHING THE STORM and RIDING THE STORM) is a superb espionage thriller in which two special agents falling in love while seeking the same gizmo but work for opposite camps. The story line is fast-paced, but it is the relationship between the ACRO and TAG agents that make for an entertaining tale work as each battle the hurricane of the century on the United States east coast with an eye on their hearts.

Anecdotes, humor, and a lively format would not seem to suit a survey of weather and nature, but it works well in Richard Keen's Skywatch West: The Complete Weather Guide, which emerges in a revised, updated format to provide details on the West's weather and most dramatic effects. Chapters are practical as well as entertaining: from learning how to 'read' clouds to building a home weather station, Skywatch West is packed from cover to cover with insights, projects, and facts.

Although it focuses on the western part of the United States, this is one of the best books on weather that I have read and the information is applicable to everywhere in the U.S. The book starts with the causes of weather and covers everything from the effect of an atmosphere and the warming of it by the sun to the effect of the earth's rotation, moisture, land masses, etc. After that base for understanding weather they move into the specifics of weather phenomenon like fronts, jets, cyclones, snow, rain, thunderstorms, hurricanes, whirlwinds, and lights in the sky. They even cover the subject of sprites and jets above the clouds, an area only recently being seriously investigated after years of reports but only recent proof of its existence.

The author explains everything in easy to understand terms while still being through enough to provide a complete education in basic weather. Of particular value are the numerous pictures of actual weather events so you can see what different cloud types look like or the effects of hail, or even see a cold front slipping under a warm layer of air. Skywatch West is a fascinating book for anyone interested in understanding the weather and very highly recommended.

This is a rich, robust and fresh treatment of weather phenomena. Images, graphs and photographs make information easy to grasp. Excellent false color satellite images are used throughout. The book celebrates where Keen lives and what he knows best: the Rocky Mountains in 13 chapters from why is there weather, through snow and rain, cold and hot, to light and weather observation.

Errors include use of "SierraS" (Sierra is already plural) and deliberate rejection of the US system of measurement, SI or "metric" even though it permeates our lives and is mandated by federal law (Acts of 1866, 1975 and 1988), and thereby eliminates quantitative consideration of Canada and Mexico except for anecdotal events.

This is an enjoyable read and good reference, it is just waiting to be updated with SI units so it can better be integrated for use in schools and universities.

This book does focus on weather in the American West. But it is a great book about weather in general.

Keen became fascinated by weather in October 1954, when "a wild lady named Hazel" visited his home. I became fascinated by weather less than two months before that, when Hazel's, um, sister, Carol, visited my home. Hazel and Carol were two truly impressive storms.

Keen teaches us a little about what causes weather. He discusses cyclones, and mentions some of the major cyclones that have hit the West. We learn about all the different types of snow and snow crystals. And Keen tells us about thuderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and more. There are all sorts of statistics on rainfall and on temperature extremes. And the author teaches us how to read weather maps!

One of the most interesting sections was on chinooks. The author explains that the Ute Indians knew that when one is within 10 or 20 miles to the East of a mountain range, you'll get occasional downslope winds which can exceed 100 miles per hour. That's why they refused to set their tepees at certain places just east of the Rockies. The white men ignored the Ute warnings and built a town (now a city) called Boulder, Colorado at one of these sites. And sure enough, every few years, Boulder gets hit by big chinook winds. So do Livingston, Montana, and Sheridan, Wyoming, and Bishop, California, and Carson City, Nevada. These winds are generally very warm, and can lift the temperatures by 20 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit in a few hours. The Chinook Indians of coastal Oregon called warm winds "snow-eaters," and that's how the snow-eating winds downslope of the mountains wound up being called "chinooks!"

I enjoyed this book very much. I certainly recommend it.

I very much agree with the previous reviews. This book is a rare gem, a treasure, truly a work of art.

It's the finest and most enjoyable mathematics book I've encountered to date, and that's taking into account the existence of many excellent math books. Certainly among books specifically on applied mathematics, this book is uniquely valuable.

The choice of topics, sequence of presentation, level of detail, use of examples, and clarity and elegance of exposition are all outstanding. Batschelet has crafted every chapter, section, paragraph, and even sentence with meticulous care and precision in the finest Swiss tradition.

If you've already studied mathematics through calculus, differential equations, probability, linear algebra, etc., this book is an especially good resource to review it all via a single coherent book.

To illustrate how much I cherish this book, I've bought two copies -- one to read, and the other in case the first is damaged and the book goes out of print.

If you love math, buy this book. If you just have an interest in math, buy this book and read it, and you may well come to love math.

This book is quite the best I've seen, the finest book on applied mathematics ever. This textbook puts to shame nearly all other attempts. Batschelet possesses a mastery of presentation that borders on genius. Chapter 7 --including basic concepts of logarithms-is worth the price alone. Book topics build progressively: Real numbers, sets, logic, relations and functions then power, periodic, exponential & logarithm functions; graphical methods, limits, differential & integral calculus; advanced log & hyperbolic functions, ordinary differential equations, multivariable functions; probability, matrices & vectors, complex numbers.Truly a pedagogical masterpiece.

An exceptionally useful and accessible book.

This is one of the few books I have come across that more often than not will contain the solution to those mathematical problems encountered in the practical pursuit of biological investigation. It is written in a clear and entertaining manner, with many footnotes containing points of historical or general interest. Too often mathematical texts are dry and inaccessible to the non-specialist; Edward Batschelet's book represents a refreshing oasis that has reassured many a reluctant mathematician among the ranks of the life sciences. Buy it!!

I purchaised this book while I was doing my Ph.D. I am happy that I now have a chance to write about it. Few books on mathematics are so enjoyable to read as this one. It explains concepts with amazing clarity. It guides you through all the necessary mathematics and will infact motivate you to take up mathematics as your major. This book should never go out of print. The author has made a long standing contribution by writing this book. There will be thousands of students who will be appreciate this book for generations. I would say buy it, with your eyes closed. You will never regret it.

Guy Dauncey and Patrick Mazza's book is THE best I have ever seen in non-fiction. I'm still amazed that I don't get overwhelmed by the amount of information but it's so user-friendly that I just can't.

It's a great honour to have it on my bookshelf. Every time I go by it I think about the time and effort it took to create a masterpiece like that one.

Tired of hearing all the bad news about our environment?
Feeling hopeless about your ability to change anything?
Wondering how so many people can ignore such big problems for so long?

So was I. Until I got my hands on Guy Dauncey's book. It's a solution-oriented cure for the Global Warming blues. It's written in short, clear, visually appealing sections, so it's easy to find the information you need. The 101 solutions aren't just a long rambling list, they are organized according to their level of application - from individual and local through national and global. I found the many concrete examples of people and communities that are making a real difference very heartening. So wether you're in the market for an environmentally friendy car, or you're an elected official trying to formulate a policy on fuel additives, or you're in a general state of despair like I was, this book is for you!

This book is a gem! It takes the most urgent of environmental issues, global climate change, and translates the science and the complexity into simple language that is understandable and interesting.

But it really excels when it moves beyond the problem, which can be paralyzing, to solutions that work. The book is chock full of simple and profound actions that can be taken to reduce our impact on the earth's atmosphere, in ways that save money and would be politically popular.

If you want to find out more about wind power, it's in here. If you're wondering what your city or town could do to become more climate friendly, there are websites and contacts galore within. If you want to take personal action, look no further.

The global climate crisis is real, impending, and scary. But a time of crisis is also a time of opportunity. This book shows what the opportunities are. It should be on the desks of every policy maker and politician.

And it deserves a peace prize for illuminating the way out of the climate mess we have created.

When I read this book my first reaction was to feel great relief.
Most predictions about the long term effects of global warming
are to say the least disheartening.

Yet this book is filled to overflowing with practical solutions for dealing with the global climate challenge positively.

Most infomed scientists would agree that the consequences of the
terrorists attack on the World Trade Center, whilst horrific, are
minuscule in comparison to the long term effects of gobal warming.

Hunger; massive food, fuel, water and energy shortages will likely reap a terrible human toll, but rather than take up room in this insightful book by attributing blame or by being overwhelmed, Dauncey's entire focus is on finding practical solutions, --in the most part by utilizing technologies which already exist.
Dauncey is no Pollyanna, he is a pragmatist and a realist.

I am indebted to him for providing concrete solutions which can if we will only take note rescue us from the abyss.
This contribution provides clear guidance on climate solutions delivering a road map which can help move us forward.

I am spellbound by the breadth and depth of research required to produce this remarkable volume.

This book has succeeded in addressing and tailoring its message to non scientists, business people and governments.
I highly recommend this book

All three Williamson "Tales alive!" books are great but of the three this is my favourite. The stories chosen are delightful and cover a range of sky related themes, eg. the sun, moon, stars, weather. The stories were not always the best known from a region (I noticed this with the Polynesian entry as that's my part of the world), and this was a definite plus for me. The activities are great - I work with slightly older children than the book is aimed at but could easily adapt them to suit.

Tales of the Shimmering Sky has something for everyone!

This collection of ten folktales from around the world (Native America, Slovakia, India, Europe, Canada, Polynesia, Mexico, Africa, and Scandinavia) focuses on the sky--heavenly bodies, the seasons, and the weather. In addition to Milord's colorful and creative stories, this resource also contains background information, science experiments, hands-on projects, games, arts and craft activities, and recipes. Children are invited to learn about the mysteries of the sky through exciting activities such as baking a batch of celestial pretzels, solving a lunar calendar puzzle, making a Beaufort scale to estimate wind speed, and flying an origami-style paper kite.
