A well written and well illustrated look into the common soldiers of North and South of this conflict.

Nicely written and well illustrated. A good book to have for those interested in this subject.

An amazing account of the men who fought the Civil War.

This book is a fantastic source of information about the lives of the men fighting the Civil War. It is not focused on causes of the war or the governmental issues that fueled it except where these related the personal lives of the men who fought. It was about common men: Yankee and Rebel. It gives us a snapshot of their passion, the conditions they endured, their joys and sorrows.

The book shows us how common men of all walks of life, and nationalities became soldiers (or not). There are many excerpts and quotes from the people who were there. It gives insight into how they fought, the equipment they used, the pride they felt and what it was like when it was over.

The pictoral history in this book is wonderful. There are pictures from the actual conflict as well as pictures of artifacts photographed later.

Davis' writing style creates such a vivid picture of the world these men lived in. This book is a long way from the dry accounts many history books provide.

I highly recommend this book!

An oversized, handsomely illustrated look at the Civil War, with emphasis on the soldiers themselves - camp life, uniforms, weapons, etc. Perhaps the most interesting and rewarding chapter, because it is so rarely dealt with in most other books about the war, is the one entitled "Willing Spirits & Weak Flesh," all about the sordidness of army life: drunkenness, prostitution, theft, and insubordination, among many other miseries. An excellent book that focuses on the human side of war, not the politics, the generalship, the maneuvering. An excellent addition to anyone's Civil War library.

This book is great as an introduction to the major concepts of finance. If you are looking for an advanced refernce book, this is not the one. But if you want to refresh your memory, or want a quick overview of concepts and methods, I can't think of a better book.

A readable, relevant reference for every business person.

Every business owner, executive, accountant, banker and maybe even your lawyer should have this valuable book on their desktop! The authors demystify the art of finance and suggest pragmatic approaches and solutions for every day capital uses and needs. This attractive and attractively priced book is written in an innovative way, making it a useful quick desktop reference as well as an MBA level finance text. The glossary by itself is worth the price of the book. How astounding that the authors are both French, yet write with more clarity in English than any American finance writer I have read of late! Vive la readability!

You can apply almost everything in this book to your daily practice. No matter your years of experience , FFE will refresh you and reinforce your knowledge. I always have this book on my desk for reference.

‚Finance for Executives' is invaluable for everybody who needs to analyse companies and wants to know whether investment, financing or business decisions create value. It is written very clearly and is therefore easy to understand. It offers plenty of practically relevant examples, mostly based on one company which is being analysed in its different aspects throughout the whole book. Moreover, every chapter finishes with review problems (including solutions) and useful references. Some chapters offer appendices with mathematical proofs or additional in-depth analysis. - You will not be satisfied with this book if you are looking for a scientific, theoretical text. However, your expectations will be exceeded if you are a practitioner who wants to make an impact in a consulting or investment banking environment. - What does make this book so special? After working through it, you will be able to easily put into practice what you read.

More Than a Dog's Life

Review Date: 2006-10-27
In 1381, English folk rebelled against the oppressive system of serfdoms. Cruel lords and masters ruled villages of ordinary folk with no say over the heavy taxation and unjust laws.

For a simple hunting dog, human politics meant little to nothing. As the canine friend to Rufus, a simple man, the old dog is happy to keep her place by the fire, take her master hunting, and sleep in the house.

Everything changes shortly after the birth of her latest litter of puppies. Soldiers take Rufus and his wife, Comfort, away, leaving behind their three children. The dog ensures the children's safety and returns to find only one of her puppies has remained. Together, she and her young pup do their best to survive. She experiences freedom, captivity, and reunion, all in the names of love, loyalty, and survival.

Originally published in 1998, FIRE, BED & BONE is a dog's observation of the horrors life sometimes presents us. This telling of a significant event in history is done in a way that will engage kids, teach them, and show them a wonderful story. Using a dog's point of view (there are no talking animals in this book) to portray the way of men is a powerful tool, and in this case, it is well used.

This book should be a leading candidate for classroom use, as well as for simple reading enjoyment. The writing is easy to follow and sentimental without growing sappy. I definitely recommend this title.

What a brilliant book! This is set at the time of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England, and it shows the causes and events and results of that social upheaval in a way that is quite sympathetic to the peasants' side of the story without glossing over the mob violence that was involved. The book manages to be dense with factual information without being boring or preachy. However, the narrator is a dog -- a dog accustomed to a life of good care, with the comfort of the fire, a bed, and an occasional bone shared from the meager resources of its owners. And the dog tells us not only about the impact of social unrest on the people but also on their animals. The reading level is suitable for average fifth graders, but the issues are powerful and complex enough to interest older students of any reading level. This is a wonderful narrative of human events from an animal's perspective and should be placed along the classics of this genre.

Finally! Some honest historical fiction for the YA reader.

Branford has crafted a powerful piece of historical fiction about fourteenth century England and has done so in a manner that honors the Young Adult audience's often ignored right to realistic, unromantic history. Her narrator, a wise, nameless hound is endearing but never cute. Through her eyes we witness the brutality and social upheaval of the late Middle Ages. This sage old dog, so unlike the traditional, overwrought animal narrator, provides a sense of detachment from events like the Wat Taylor rebellion that allows us to feel the peasant's righteousness as well as to cringe at their senseless mob violence. Above all, get ready to breath this one in. Fire, Bed & Bone is so splendidly redolent with the real, visceral scents of the age that you will inhale it as much as you read it.

I have had a chance to train with Chief Chikerotis. He is one of the most genuine guys you will ever meet. He cares more about training the fire service than he does of himself. The reasons these stories are in the book are because they match the life the Chief has lived. Chief's dedication to firefighter rescue and survival is unmatched. What a great person to learn from, I would work under him any time.

This book does a very good job, and I give thanks to the author and all his scources for the excellent stories. Every story in this book serves to illistrate a point, a purpose. It tells the stories of fire fighters from all over, both big and small, career and volunteer. Some of the stories are sad, some of them happy but All of them serve the purpose just as the title says "Lessons Learned." I would strongly recommend this book to Anybody and Everybody that is interest in, already serving in, or has served in the Fire Service in some way. Furthermore this book is good not only for those previously mentioned but for Everybody else. You won't be disapointed if you purchase this book..I wasn't thus why I've given it 5 stars.

This is an excellent book especially if you are in the fire service. Every story comes out with a special meaning and best of all, very good lessons for survival and safety. The author was the assistant chief of the fire academy while I was a recruit(candidate)and he did an excellent job teaching. I'm still learning from him and will never forget every thing he taught me in the academy. Thanks Steve for being an important role model and teacher.

This gives you tips for differentiating between an anhinga and a cormorant (pointed or hooked beak) or snowy egret vs American egret (black vs yellow beak). Also shows chicks, immature birds, breeding plumage and females that vary in coloration.
The photos are large (some even full page), colorful and a real help in identifying the birds. It is a good browsing book as well, to just enjoy the birds flying, eating, swimming, etc.
Only 60+ pages, but the oversize format makes it a great souvenir of a trip to Florida or a resource for bird lovers or Florida residents. Actually it is useful to anyone living in the South or the Gulf coast states where these birds can be seen.
It includes coots, ducks, egrets, flamingos, frigatebirds, gallinules, gulls, herons, ibis, kingfisher, limpkins, osprey, pelicans, sandpipers, skimmers, spoonbills, storks and terns.

This was a wonderful book. I had to buy it for an ecology class on the Everglades, but it was well worth it. It has beautiful large color illustrations, and descriptions of the various water birds of Florida. A great investment whether you plan to visit, like I did, or just to enjoy the book by itself. Really useful in identifying birds, especially wading, in the cypress swamps, as well as the entire Everglades water shed. A must buy.

It is a priviledge to see the world through the eyes of this poet-at once a child, a lover, a parent an artist and a scientist. To him, life is a Kosher frankfurter to be eaten with relish. Reading the poetry of Milton Fischer alternately evokes a tear, a chuckle, a memory, and a fantasy. It is an especially delicious experience for those who, like the author, were born at the beginning of the twentieth century and wish to bring the flavor of those times with them into the twenty first.

I loved this book. He seemed genuine and really care the fate of the Hong Kong Chinese.

Regardless of the so-called hidden agenda behind the rush to the democracy before the handover, the truth was back then none of the patten's predecessors had the political reforms in agenda. They were all diplomats and they only really concerned to kowtowing Beijing. Patten was a politican and he tried to work and fight for the benefits on behalf of HIS constituents i.e. people of Hong Kong. He got unfairly smeared by Beijing in return just because the truth hurts.

The bottom line was Chris Patten did leave a legacy way better than Tung che-hwa, the chief executive of Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region-not the disease) could ever dream of. What an irony it was when the white Anglo-Saxon master who make Hong Kong prosperous and better than the mainland Chinese themselves.

When the Union Jack lowered the last time on June 30, 1997, it symbolized not only the beginning of the fall of Hong Kong, but also spell the death of Hong Kong. Hong Kong-the beacon and the crown jewel of what a Chinese society ought to be back then ceased to exist.

After reading the online review of Theroux's Kowloon Tong (a fictional account of the 1997 Handover of Hong Kong), I am surprised to find that only one customer have contributed a review to Dimbleby's marvelous work on the historical events. Dimbleby provided an excellent and comprehensive account of the political events that led to the signing of the 1984 Sino-British agreement, the arrival of Chris Patten, the introduction of legislative reform, and the eventual derailment of the democratic movement by the Communist Chinese Government. Dimbleby also tell the stories of several Hong Kong citizens and their views of the Handover. Being a native of Hong Kong who have spent my last 12 years in the States, Dimbleby's book brought me up-to-date on the big political stride taken by and the obstacles awaiting the people of Hong Kong.

This is definitely a good book.

This book is one of the best books about the history and political development of HK. It not only gives a brief but interesting historical outline at the beginning of the book, it also traces the development of HK politics. What the governors before Chris Patten did and what have been changed since the arrival of Patten. It also outlines lots of power struggles between the governor and the ministers in Britain and how Patten dealt with them. For sure the relations between the governor and the Prime Minister John Major is a key factor contributing to the "success" of the governor. Of course one would have no doubt about that the close relationship between the governor and the writer, Jonathan Dimbleby, who followed Patten to come to HK and spent several years with him, which does enable him to access some crucial but secret matters that are not easily accessed by other journalists. Being a HK citizen, reading the book enables me not just to know the past better but it also enriches me about the situations of HK at that time. Reading it is just like passing through the history once again, with all those political arguments between China and both Patten and Britain reappearing in real life. Another interesting thing about the book is that it also touches lots of the everyday lives of the ordinary people living in HK, how did they feel about the political arguments and what did they plan to do after the handover of China. This makes the book more lively. This book is definitely a book that students of history/Political Science/HK Studies should read.

Jonathan Dimbleby's The Last Governor is a tour de force that gives the reader an insider's perspective into the tenure of Hong Kong's last colonial leader, Chris Patten. Dimbleby treats the reader to a narrative account of the trials and tribulations that Patten faced as he attempted to enact democratic reforms in Great Britain's last colonial jewel. Although one would undoubtedly expect the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to be vociferously opposed to any belated attempt by the British colonial authorities to bequeath a semblance of democracy on Hong Kong, Dimbleby makes the case that Patten's biggest enemies often came from within his own government. Dimbleby's revelations that selected British cabinet and Foreign Office officials shamelessly sought to downgrade the importance of Hong Kong and sacrifice Patten's proposed reforms on the alter of commercial relations with the PRC, resulted in Dimbleby being investigated by the Foreign Office for possible receipt of secret intelligence materials. Dimbleby was cleared of these allegations, but the vast array of insider information that Dimbleby amassed for this book strengthens the strident arguments that Dimbleby advances. Only a handful of participants in The Last Governor emerge with their reputations unscathed. Hong Kong's local and international business elite is portrayed as willing supplicants in the PRC's efforts to scale back personal and political liberties after Hong Kong's reversion to PRC sovereignty, a position easily enforced by PRC threats to their commercial interests. Martin Lee and Emily Lau, two of Hong Kong's leading democracy advocates, are portrayed as actually weakening Patten's push for democratic reforms through their uncompromising approach. The various representatives of the PRC are painted as unbending ideologues with little appreciation of Hong Kong's way of life. Dimbleby is most critical of the British officials, past and present, who acted to either inadvertently or deliberately sabotage Patten's governorship. Most prominent on this list is Sir Percy Cradock, Great Britain's lead negotiator in the 1984 Joint Declaration and former Ambassador to the PRC. Cradock comes off as a modern-day Neville Chamberlain, willing to cut a bad deal with an unsavory power for the sake of diplomatic expediency. Cradock compounded this error by working both privately and publically to weaken Patten's political position and policies. Dimbleby also argues that the Cradock mentality had infected the entire Foreign Office and selected members of John Major's cabinet, who worked to undercut Patten and sell-out Hong Kong in favor of better commercial relations with the PRC. The greatest strength of The Last Governor is also its greatest weakness. While such open access to Patten gives this book the necessary dramatic propulsion, it also strikes the reader as serving as Patten's mouthpiece. While Dimbleby does downgrade Patten for underestimating the challenges he was to face as Governor, Dimbleby's portrayal of Patten as the lonely David fighting against the multi-headed Goliath seems to diminish the numerous allies Patten needed to help him accomplish the limited reforms he was able to enact. Dimbleby could have also delved deeper into the political rationale behind the PRC's bargaining position and policies regarding Hong Kong. The Last Governor is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in Hong Kong, Chinese, or British affairs and to readers interested in how bureaucratic politics affects international diplomacy. Dimbleby's prose is brisk and should easily captivate and entrance the reader. Keep in mind that this is not an academic tome, so Dimbleby's point of view is repeatedly expressed without reservation or apology.

I've recently started my own business and I found this book to be more then helpful. The book gives you every single technique you'll need to have a successful business. Even if you don't own your own business this is great tool for a salesman.

Starting from the ground up, it explains what is at the heart of a company, and how to target into a specific market to get your ideal clients. The book goes on to explain how to create the perfect slogan and logo that will attract clients to you. When starting your own business there are many little aspects that we tend to forget, this book covers everything from picking a name, to having specials.

What I liked best about the book was the fact that everything is broken down into categories and I could take my time reading it. It posed questions about what I wanted my business to be and how to achieve that. It even explains how to find the right software to manage my work and different marketing strategies I could use. At the back of the book is an index that is a great reference for when I need to look a specific topic up. I know that this is something that I will find very handy, especially when I need a fresh new idea.

M.D. Weems has left no stone unturned. She offers valuable advice on everything from naming your company to keeping track of all those clients that will soon be pouring in. Her common sense approach to marketing will have you smacking your head and saying, "Why didn't I think of that!"

Even better, Weems lays out a marketing plan for you and breaks it up into daily, weekly, and more sporadic tasks. All you have to do is customize it for your own needs. If you follow this book to the letter, you can't go wrong. Just hope that the competition doesn't get a hold of it first.

"Getting Clients and Keeping Clients" by M.D.Weems is an interesting book. The author gives details that are often left out in other how-to books. Based on the assumption that you already know what your business is or will be. M.D.Weems starts off by explaining how to "brand" your business. She then proceeds to explain how to design an effective
logo, brochure and website. There is a helpful section on how to find your target market and then make your business visible. The author explains in detail how to use media to your business' advantage and why building credibility is so important to the business owner.

The second part of the book deals with setting goals and how to keep on track to meet them. You will learn basics of a good customer service system and how to keep all of your business information organized. Ms. Weems has also included just how essential it is for your business to treat staff well and includes some very nice suggestions. Most
importantly, the author writes about ways to keep your business "new" to clients you have and your employees as well.
This book is well written and laid out. I would say that this book would certainly be an asset to anybody who has a business or is starting a business. "Getting Clients and Keeping Clients" is an invaluable reference to any business owner.

I found "Getting the Most From Your Insurance Claim" extremely helpful when I filed a claim with my insurance company. There were a lot of things that my insurance company's adjuster overlooked when evaluating my claim. The book helped me prepare an inventory list of things that I would have overlooked myself if I had not read the book. This is an excellent resource for anyone that has ever filed a claim after a loss.

Having been the "insured" in a major loss, I value the expertise of the Public Insurance Adjuster; without his assistance, renumeration for my losses would have been minimized at best. Mr. Catania's "how-to" book enables everyone to take reign over his/her own property loss.
