This is the only reference book I have and need on Exercise Physiology. Most useful to me are chapters on performance enhacement, high altitude acclimatisation and physical training for seniors. The first few introductory chapters and the first few pages of each chapter remind me of my basic life sciences. The authors then focus on the application of cell biology to training. The thing I like most about this book, is that there is no "guru talk". Every piece of advice is based on currect research.

The book is divided into 7 sections. 1. Nutrition, 2. Energy production, 3. Energy Delivery & Utilisation, 3. Enhancement of Energy Capacity, 4. Environmental Stress, 5. Body Composition & Weight Control, 7. Successful Aging, Disease Prevention.

It's a very thick book, but the paper quality is high and the colourful illustrations make it a joy to read. However, this is not simple book for the average man on the street. There is nothing sensational here - just pure science. Readers without a background in the life sciences may not be able to follow.

This book is a great help in understanding what is happening within the body conerning sports training and nutrition. It is based on uncountable research studies and presented in a very readable form with ample graphics illustrations. The book helped me not only to understand more, but also to improve fitness and even loose some weight. It goes very far beyond compared to what one gets told in fitness centers. The main approach of the book is based on energy considerations. Understanding how the body handles energy makes it possible to describe the effects of exercising and performance much more deeply. I would recommend this book to every exerciser, who likes to improve physically and understand background matters. Basically, it's a textbook for sports students. But people outside, like myself, can greatly benefit from it, as well.

I am a Personal Training manager with a Physical Education undergraduate degree and Health Preservation and Rehabilitation graduate degree.
I consider that the science of exercise physiology should constitute the basic knowledge for anybody who wants to understands the way the human body functionates and acutely and chronicaly adapts to the exercise stimuli.
No matter you are(or preparing to become) a PE teacher, sport medicine specialist, personal trainer, physical therapist, athletic coach, etc, you should understand the science of exercise physiology.
Dr. McArdle's " Exercise physiology" is definetely one of the most complete books ever writen on the subject. With miriads of grafics and pictures, and tons of scientific research descriptions and results, the book is quite pleasing to read and very convincing.
With more than 1000 pages, definetelly worths its price and even more. Contains as much information as you could find in 3-4 good scientific books and much more than the complete colection of "Muscle and Fitness" starting from 1970.
You can find detailed informations together with all the book ilustrations and even 4 complete chapters at: www.connection.LWW.com/go/mcardle

The Winner!

Although it runs to 1158 pages, this winning book, long recognized as THE leading exercise physiology text, stays succinct and engaging--and not one page too long. A key asset of this book is its close engagement with the scientific literature, which appears throughout in the form of unobtrusive but crucial little superscripted numbers that cite published studies. The references exceed in both depth and richness other exercise physiology texts like Baechle's very good "Essentials of Strength and Conditioning," Power and Howley's popular "Exercise Physiology," and certainly the authors' own 678-page "Essentials of Exercise Physiology," a shorter text that breezily dumps its references at the end of each chapter without numbering them or citing them in context. The definitive coverage of many popular fitness subjects, from exercise selection to steroids to nutrition, make this masterful book not only a pre-eminent text, but great reading for any consumer who, tired of the ridiculous claims of the diet and fitness industry, seeks authoritative answers.

This is a great play, When you're reading it it feels more like you're watching a documentry , rather than a play that someone has created. I think the writers have done a great job in giving us an inside look into being a prisoner or a loved one of a human being on death row. I think this is a really brave play and it has something to say. However if you're after something upbeat, this is not the play to read.

whereas Bush killed more in Texas, with Al GOnzo's ineffectual five minutes "clemency" rubber stamp reviews, than any other governor in history since Vlad the Impaler.

This important play for today tells us in the condemned innocents' own words why we must cease being a rogue nation and rejoin the community of civilized nations by outlawing capital punishment. Look at the short list of nations which still practice the barbarism which is the death penalty, and decide which list you stand with.

Read the words of these innocents driven mad by the fatal, inexorable and casual uncaring injustice of our system.

What purpose has the death penalty? It is no deterrrent. We have known that since James Joyce outlined the objections in his Episode Twelve of Ulysses. The Catholic Church continually condemns its immorality and injustice as a pro-life issue. Yet we kill on. Why?

Truth is a very scary thing but it's something we should all know. I went into it knowing the of the horror that is present today and it was still a very touching story. (Probably due to the personal feel it swelled with) For those who aren't aware of the injustice that is so prominent, this would be groundbreaking. It's an amazing play and personally, I think it's better than "I AM MY OWN WIFE".

I first SAW this play at the Edinburgh Festival. It is immensely powerful. It gives the story, in their own words,of a number of people who have been unjustly or erroneously accused of crimes and sentenced to death in the USA, and have spent time, sometimes decades, on Death Row. These people were eventually found innocent, but the play also has much to say about the justice system, prison conditions, and human courage and cowardice. The humour, resilience and lack of bitterness is stunning. My copy is now being passed round on Death Row in Ohio.

This play makes you realize what goes on!

This play is very well written. The story just makes you know what people's lives are like after they are convicted of a crime that they never commited. If you want something real and new than this play is for you! This play is very creative and well thought out for the viewer, reader, and actor to enjoy.

I bought the Get Ready for the Code Series with it's accompanying teacher/parent book for my 5 year old daughter this summer. What fun we had doing them. She asks to do "homework" all the time. Although she knew the letter sounds already, this was great reinforcement for her. And the opportunity she gets to work on her penmanship is also a plus. I also like that they break up the consonants into 3 books so she feels as if she has accomplished quite a bit when she finishes a book. After the first few letters she is able to work on most of the book herself. Her favorite by far is what we call the Riddle page, this page has pictures and you have to read the riddle and they have to find it on the page and follow the directions.

We cannont wait to begin the Explore the Code Books.

This is well worth the money and it 's fun too.

I purchased the ETC Primers ABC as an extra supplement to our homeschooling program. The primers are divided into three books: Primer A teaches the consonants b,f,m,k,r,t. Primer B teaches the consonants p,j,h,s,n,d. Primer C teaches the consonants c,l,g,w,y,v,z,q,x. There are twelve worktext pages for each letter. Your child will learn the sound of each letter. The concept of same/different, how to trace the shape of the letter with their finger, prewriting skills, and how to write the letter itself in lowercase. The series is geared toward children who are just learning their letters/sounds. If your child already knows the alphabet/sounds and is reading I would suggest utilizing Book 1 which is more challenging.

Both of my kids have been using Explode the Code since before they could read. We started them out using the Primers (Books A.B and C) and have continued onto the others. I like how these books practice phonics and handwriting. Good repetition without becoming too boring for daily use. My kids enjoy working from these and will ask if I forget to pull them.

Bottom Line - It Works!!

The progressive phonics introduction, the engaging little drawings, the repetitive tasks, the systematic skill progression, among other educational objectives, all boil down to one fact ~ THIS WORKS! I've tried several other methods to assist my special child in spelling and reading. While these workbooks are marketed more as a supplement to a reading program, nothing has been more influential in my daughter actually GETTING IT! She is always eager to pull out her Explode the Code book first. The progess is consistently steady. My friend's child who is not learning challenged feels the same enthusiam. The publisher of this series also produces the wonderful Wordly Wise 3000 workbooks which are equally successful and well-received by my students.

I purchased "Get Ready for the Code" Books A-C for my 4.5 yo after our attempt with "Phonic Pathways." I started with "Phonic Pathways" because it was recommended in "WTM" and because she already knew most of the letter sounds. She totally hated it, and for me it was a chore and laborious. I went looking for something different and found "Get Ready for the Code."

She absolutely LOVES the "Get Ready for the Code" books. The amount of repitition is sufficient without feeling like you're never going to move on. We do 4- 7 pages each day and she totally gets it without being bored. I've seen a big difference in her willingness to figure out what words start with and spelling in general. (Now, this could be a function of maturation as much as the books, but I'm leaning more towards the influence of the books.) One reason for our success with the code books, I think, is that "Get Ready for the Code" is more hands on with handwriting, matching, and coloring. "Phonic Pathways" is not--or at least the way I interpreted it.

I haven't used any of the upper ETC books yet but am well pleased with the success that "Get Ready for the Code" has brought. We needed something that was gentle with repitition and we found it.

Fascinating book that delves deeply into how that hamburger, potato chip or cookie made its way into your home and stomach. These are things most of us have wondered about, but never really knew or cared why. A section of the book is dedicated to how that cookie or barbeque sauce got its flavor in a labratory and helps explain those long list of weird ingredients we never really understood or wanted to know about. That is all there really is to say about this book. If you want to know where all those items on your supermarket shelf and fast food restaraunts came from, read it. If you have any sort of conscience and would rather not know and enjoy the foods you eat, run away. If you are one of the many overweight Americans, this might give you some insight as to why your diet is a problem. This was made into a movie, that summarized the book, but left out tons of things as most movies do. Watching the movie would give you a very basic idea of what to expect.

While this paragraph does not cover the book review a real lot, I want to pass on how it has changed my life; I was overweight due to fast foods, crappy snacks, soda and inactivity. I thought drinking Vitamin Water was healthy. I dont know if could eat fast food anymore knowing the suffering that went into a 1 dollar hamburger. Ok, I might on a rare occasion, but the book even mentions that these fast food restaurants are really designed for a 1-2 times a week visit from the executives of these companies. For 2 weeks now I went to mostly organic foods, fruit and vegetables, water and less bread. I have had filet mignon and meatloaf 1 time each. Its not hard with a little effort. I exercised with a treadmill and video. I lost 10 pounds from 203 to 193 at 5' 10" and 43 years old.

I would like to thank the author for changing my life, which was no easy feat to accomplish.

This book describes the growth of the fast food / burger industry in America, and the consequences from fast food's popularity. The author covers labor practices (and malpractices) in the cattle growing and food processing industries, food regulation, dietary effects, and health hazards like E.Coli and mad cow.

The book is very well written, in my opinion. I found the opening stories about Cheyenne Mountain and the rise of the burger industry in California fascinating. Some of the personal stories of illegal immigrants in the food processing industry were also interesting, although I feel the author emphasized them too much. I personally was more interested in the larger history and practices of the industry and when the personal effects for me as a consumer could be. That was also covered - I just wish some other parts had been shorter.

The book is not indiscriminate leftist McDonalds bashing -- in fact, at the end the author acknowledges some industry-changing positive steps McD has taken to insure better beef quality, and even goes on to praise In-N-Out Burger, my favorite burger chain in California :)

Very good reading, you will not regret buying or borrowing it.

After years of hearing about it from my mother I'm finally read this books. I'm glad I did but it wasn't perfect. The second half about the common practices of meat produces both in and out of the slaughterhouses was good and something everyone should read. The first half however I had a hard time getting through. I didn't find the part on the beginning/growth interesting, nor did I enjoy the discussion of the sociological and economic effects of the fast food industry. He just spend way too long whining about how big companies are killing off the "American farmer" relying almost entirely on the 'this is how it used to be so it's best' argument. The book breaks down into two parts; skip the first half but the second is a must read for everyone.

I know kids that buy Taco Bell for lunch religiously at school, or domino's pizza; I was never fortunate enough to spend a $4 on lunch everday and came with packed carrots and a turkey sandwich. After reading Fast Food Nation I am so thankful that I am even limited to eating fast food on a rare weekend.I agree that it is very convenient for fast paced lives but Schlosser has released what people sacrifice for their bodies for their own convenience. I look back in disgust at the Hot Lunches I begged my parents for in school; us kids would complain that the fried chicken was sometimes purple or awkwardly brown; and now because of Schlosser's book I relize that its just not apparent in a bad kitchen staff. Fast Food Nation provides the trueth about what we put into our bodies and honestly is trying to help America not be the number one country with people with weight issues and Burger King, McDonalds or Taco Bell within every neighborhood. In addition, I've always loved $.89 tacos or buritto supremes at Taco Bell... but I've now decided to change my diet and stick to my own prepared food...or my mothers will be much much better for me and my body. Father of the Bride (Part I) is more than a Classic Film, is at the pinnacle of the Comedy genre. Is one of those few movies that you'll enjoy and laugh each and every than you watch it.
Though Steven Martin certenly is one of the best actors, superb as a comedian and excellent talent in dramatic roles, I prefer the Spencer Tracy version hands down the best though in Black & White you enjoy Specer's wit, he worked very hard get it perfect.

This humorous play is based on the novel and has been successfully made into two different movies. The movie starring Spencer Tracy is more similar to the play than the Steve Martin film. However, the Steve Martin movie has one very important character that the Spencer Tracy film does not, Massoula (played by Martin Short); who is the funniest character in the script. Anyway, the play is a charming comedy that examines the horrors of the rituals we call weddings from the perspective of the father of the bride.

Mr. Banks is a happily married man with three children who doesn't have any major problems in life. Then his daughter announces out of the blue that she is engaged to a man the family barely knows. Chaos begins and continues throughout the play until the last scene when we see the true character of the father of the bride.

A delightful play that's not only a blast to watch, but is a joy to read as well.

Having already seen both movie versions and being cast in the play by the same name, I had to find a copy of the book and find out where all the delightful wit and humor had originated. I was also seeking to see if I could glean anything from the novel to use while acting in the play. I really enjoyed the movies and love the play. However, the book is more humorous than all three.

FATHER OF THE BRIDE is told from the vantage point of Stanley Banks, the title character but in an omniscient way. There are tons of witty, one-liners throughout the novel, and though there is some dated material, the Mr. Banks of the novel seems more real and down-to-Earth than any the films are theatre have produced. The book is full of observations on life; from women and men to children and business, but told in a humorous, yet enlightening way. The book isn't very long and makes for a very entertaining read. "How. . . How".

"Comprehensive" starts the subtitle, and Comprehensive it is! Too many print-handicapped people are forced to stumble through the multi-layered service system, picking up clues almost by accident until they "strike gold" in the person of a skilled counselor or librarian. Here is a full set of Tools for Learning, along with a user's guide! Important for every visually impaired student and family, vital for every school or school system's Special Education department. No less useful for those with serious learning disorders like dyslexia, or with challenging physical disabilities that prevent the easy handling of printed material. Yes, addresses and phone numbers may change; new organizations may develop; but this is a book that will be USED and that will repay its purchase many times over.

A volunteer at VISION Community Services, A Division of the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, a lovely 85 year old who is legally blind and severely hearing impaired, mentioned that she was interested in the Guide (as the result of reading a review in our newsletter). I loaned her our library copy and here's what she had to say: "Spent several hours with the Field Guide. Every low vision person should have access to it. One bonus I reaped was a comprehensive description of major suppliers, what they supply and differences between them. Also, Leibs gave a useful assessment of assistive devices. This is bewildering to the newcomer to the field. In the end, I copied out several titles of Great Books to improve my mind. Several times I've tried Huckleberry Finn and quit in boredom. On the other hand, the Toni Morrison title caught my attention, I've been meaning to sample her. Don't expect to like it, but I might be surprised." She adds that it was also good to know the approximate cost of having a book reprinted in large print, and the major LP companies. Despite being legally blind, her vision is better than her hearing so she reads large print books. Her vision loss is due to glaucoma, so she retains some decent central vision.

This book is the "needle of a compass" for the blind and dyslexic. Kudos to Leibs for providing the best resource guide for the blind and dyslexic I've read! He's not only gathered countless resources and provided those in an easy to navigate format, but he's added his own personal struggles and discoveries that finally lead him to experience the sheer joy of reading. I've placed this book in a prominent location in my office and will refer to it often as it's truly the work of a research genius. Special attention should be paid to the Introduction as Leibs takes you on a poignant journey to his discovery of reading and shares his excitement as well as disappointment while uncovering the bliss of reading. Additionally, Leibs provides a "suggested reading" list with contact information on how and where to acquire these books. Truly, his passion for reading will no doubt inspire your own, whether you are a fully sighted reader or not. Kudos to Leibs! A gem of a book, and long overdue!

NOT Another ýhow to live with a disabilityý Book . . .

I picked up this book for the first time a few nights ago and was immediately hooked. As a legally blind consumer and as Director of Rehabilitation Services at an agency whose mission is to empower blind and visually impaired individuals, I was immediately moved by the significance of Mr. Leibs' work. I read late into the night, and my last thought before drifting off to sleep that night was that I wished that this book had been around 30 years ago -- it would most certainly have saved me and a lot of others who live with severe vision impairment or blindness a whole lot of struggle and grief!

This book is the only of its kind I've encountered. The information, both concisely and engagingly presented, opens a breathtaking vista of literature and learning to the lives of the visually impaired in providing guidance to independent access of the printed word!

This book is NOT another "how to live with a disability" book. It focuses on a very important aspect of life, the ABILITY to read, to INDEPENDENTLY access the written word. Leibs has put together an extensive listing of resources to empower the visually impaired reader. In addition, the personal experiences he shares in the book brought back a host of memories of my own educational odyssey. Like Leibs, I and many others with low vision have experienced much hit-and-miss in the process of learning what we needed to know to gain the access we desire and need to succeed. Leibs has put together all the pieces of a complex puzzle into a user-friendly guide that paves the way for others to learn the rudiments of what it takes to access our literary world!

In my opinion, this book should be put into the hands of every visually impaired child in this country. Leibs also targets librarians with this work, as their awareness of these resources may enhance their own knowledge and skills in providing support for visually impaired consumers. I would additionally recommend this book to seniors who constitute, by far, the largest population of visually impaired readers.

Many thanks to Mr. Leibs for a significant contribution to the education and quality of life of blind and visually impaired people!

This book should be in the hands of every sight-impaired student no later than age tweleve. Leibs has completely overhauled the orientation for reading among the blind from one of dependence on teachers and organizations to one of connecting INDEPENDENTLY to a really vast array of resources. This hardcover volume is quite easy to navigate - well designed and quite "user friendly".

I just finished reading this book and I found it to be an excellent piece of work. I have read most of Pedro Pans books, as I am one myself. It is true that this book and Conde's book are very similar; but who cares, they are both excellent books.

The reason Alina Lopez-Marin thought that some of the chapters from Dr Triay's book reminded her of Yvonne Conde's book, is because Dr Triay's wrote his book first, a year earlier. The "untold story" Conde's title is completely misleading the public, the story was first told by Dr. Victor Triay. Shameful sales tactic!

Operation Pedro Pan Group, Inc, the official charitable organization formed by the now adult children of Pedro Pan is grateful to Dr. Victor Tryai for writting the first complete and comprehensive historical book about the exodus of the cuban children, "Operation Pedro Pan". His well documented research earned the respect of Monsignor Byan O.Walsh who personally invited Dr. Tryai to be a guest speaker at our 40th Anniversary Convocation at Barry University. Some of the comments made on the prior review regarding the findings from the Children's Bureau seem out of line. Admiration and respect is what Dr. Tryai has always shown for the participants of Operation Pedro Pan. He is indeed a great writter and a man of integrity.

This is an outstanding work by Dr. Triay, a prominent Cuba scholar from Miami, Florida and living in Middletown, Connecticut. Triay's work captures the emotions of the interviewees whose touching stories were the primary sources of Triay's research. The book incorporates Triay's unique style of weaving historical context with personal stories, which has emerged as his trademark style, with the newly released Bay of Pigs: An Oral History of Brigade 2506 (University Press of Florida March 2001).

Although I have used this text as a reference (vs. reading it all the way through, or for a class) I have found myself returning to it often. In fact, I purchased it only because I had started to wear out the copy I had borrowed from a friend...and she was missing it because she used it frequently, too. The best aspect of this text is the way the authors use examples relevant to clinical research for nearly every statistical decision. No more extrapolating from educational research, medical research...I don't usually have that much imagination! Good book.

This is a book that I have used often through my graduate career. It served as a great textbook for a course I was taking and as supplementary material for other other courses on Statistics, Design and Research Methods.

Well-organized and easy-to-read, it has become my first line-of-defense for all things related to research design. It covers the material in adequate detail so you have a good jumping off point in case you need to grab your SAS manual or your Stats text.

I've recently started my own business and I found this book to be more then helpful. The book gives you every single technique you'll need to have a successful business. Even if you don't own your own business this is great tool for a salesman.

Starting from the ground up, it explains what is at the heart of a company, and how to target into a specific market to get your ideal clients. The book goes on to explain how to create the perfect slogan and logo that will attract clients to you. When starting your own business there are many little aspects that we tend to forget, this book covers everything from picking a name, to having specials.

What I liked best about the book was the fact that everything is broken down into categories and I could take my time reading it. It posed questions about what I wanted my business to be and how to achieve that. It even explains how to find the right software to manage my work and different marketing strategies I could use. At the back of the book is an index that is a great reference for when I need to look a specific topic up. I know that this is something that I will find very handy, especially when I need a fresh new idea.

M.D. Weems has left no stone unturned. She offers valuable advice on everything from naming your company to keeping track of all those clients that will soon be pouring in. Her common sense approach to marketing will have you smacking your head and saying, "Why didn't I think of that!"

Even better, Weems lays out a marketing plan for you and breaks it up into daily, weekly, and more sporadic tasks. All you have to do is customize it for your own needs. If you follow this book to the letter, you can't go wrong. Just hope that the competition doesn't get a hold of it first.

The Shortest Path to Understanding Copyright Issues

If you'd rather spend most of your time on your creative work rather than wade through the government's articles and circulars on copyright issues, I can't recommend this book enough. Getting Permission not only addresses common misunderstandings about copyright issues, but it provides clear instructions for getting permission if in fact you need to. Before I purchased this book, I was under the impression that you always had to request permission, but that isn't the case. This is one of the most valuable references you can own if the topic of copyright seems overwhelming, and I highly recommend that you read it before creating your masterpiece.

Regardless of whether you use the Internet or do traditional publishing work, you need to know how to get permission to use the work of others. On the Internet this increasingly important in view of the issues surrounding deep linking and related challenges in a world where a simple HTML tag to someone else's work can bring legal problems. This book provides expert guidance that covers how to obtain permission, copyright research, what constitutes fair use, and how to legally use trademarks.

The book also clarifies the definition of "public domain" and what needs to be in a license agreement.

What makes this book especially valuable is that it comes with 32 forms that range from standard photo use and test use permission to linking agreements, interview releases, art for hire and more.

I can't add much to the other reviews for this book, but I would like to add my two cents...

This book does an excellent job of describing when permission is necessary for copyright and trademark issues, and give sample agreements to obtain the necessary consents. The book is very clearly and intelligently written and gives readers a very good sense of when permissions are necessary from a legal perspective or highly advisable from a practical point of view (very different issues).

So many other books talk about how to protect your own intellectual property, or how you can get into trouble if you use someone else's material.

This is the ONLY book I've found that tells you how to go about using someone else's material legally. Its step-by-step approach makes it very straightforward, and eliminates the mystery about what to do and what to expect.

This has helped me obtain a merchandise license agreement to print and market posters of an author/artist I admire and enjoy. I would NOT have known where to start without this book (or finding a high-priced copyright attorney). I still use an attorney, but just to review a contract which I already understand on my own.

Where else could you find this information? Simply Great!

If you want to use copyrighted material for your own purposes, you need to get permission from the owners first. If you don't, you could find yourself stuck in a costly lawsuit. This book, Getting Permission, shows you how to get through the permissions process. This guide is very readable and will give you a basic introduction to the permissions process, the public domain or free stuff, how to figure out and find someone who owns a copyright, what constitutes fair use, how to get academic permissions, license and merchandise agreements, what a trademark is and how to use them, how to use a fictional character, website permissions, as well as forms and a CD rom. The book covers information on music, photos, text, characters, and much more. Nolo also gives helpful suggestions as to where to go for more information on a specific topic. I found that this guide was a great introduction to getting permission for just about anything. This book will be a wonderful resource guide for years because the information contained therein is easy to understand and reliable.
