This book is a beauty to behold. Zoe Stokes is a fine artist, and all of the pictures held within this delightful book are wonderfully drawn and painted. The images are sometimes comical and cartoon-like, and other times extremely realistic.

The accompanying anecdotes are also a joy to read.

Highly recommended!

2034: Two Thousand Thirty-Four

An eclectic perspective of a world gone astray, Thernardier's epic satire is surely not for the faint hearted, or monosyllabically challenged. Pynchon and Eco aficionados are sure to delight in the interplay of `light and dark' as choreographed by Inferno Publication's self-effacing Editor Magnus, the King of Dis. Poignant passages of prose and poetry lithely intersperse the tome, delighting the conversant, not only with a literary joie de vivre, but also with a sense of self-validation for the evolving plight of the individual. Perhaps, as some have suggested, Thernardier is a modern day Nostradamus, and the Crown League of Nations -- the World governing body comprised of ten Principalities -- the inevitable result of Hillary Rodham's failure to capture the US election in 2008. But, then, Principality VI's First PALONE doesn't really gain her stride until 2010... and then all Hell breaks loose!: a new strain of yersinia pestis; the reincarnation of Josef Mengele, geneticist and philanthropist nonpareil; "Three Gays and a Goat", the new Crown nuclear paradigm and; a contemporary recitation of Dante's Inferno with Hollywood and Washington notables. Indeed, there is more, but it is best told by Ishmael, the last of a sect of Apocalypses who resides in Kursi, in the land of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee, in the year 2034...

5 Philosophical Satires, all in top-shelf couplets
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-12
Klein's poetry is hard to describe to those who have not read his work. It is very humane, subtle, and structured, yet the poems never shy away from strong critiques of human impulses. The poems in this collection, though strong statements in and of themselves, work together to create a tone unlike any other poet's. The effect is multi-fold: the couplets, like those in Klein's previous work "Monica," are dazzling and witty to a far greater extent than the lines of any freer form. The content, ordered by the construction of the lines, is structured and readable. The result is that while the reader may laugh, he laughs not only because the poem is wicked, perverse, and funny, but also because the structure of the poem serves the points of the poem, thereby allowing the poem to seem true. And nothing seems to escape the satire of Klein's poems: the ineptitude of scholars who teach "ethics in product design," the vacuous amores of NYU students, the marshy texture of a previous lover's buttocks, the emptiness of cliche remarks supposedly muttered in earnest; all are evaluated and hilariously described in the poems of 5 Satires. You will be missing an opportunity to read the great poems of the latter half of this century if you do not seek out each of Klein's works as they are made available. Browntrout publishers have really outdone themselves w/r/t the product packaging. The book itself is square, with a wonderful black cover featuring raised white lettering. The print looks as though it has been stamped upon the brilliantly white page by a blacksmith. The appearance is so beguiling, that the book would make a great gift to those with aesthetic concerns alone. It is a bargain, and I urge you to read the book.

A satire worth reading. The author brilliantly lets us know what is happening to our planet. We should be aware. Can we save the planet. Maybe if more people would read this book we'd have a chance.

I met the artist at a book convention, and he lived up to everything I had imagined. A charming, witty person, a fitting genius to have rendered this beautifual trip into a dark and wonderfully convoluted fantasy. Sloane , a captain and starfarer shines brighter in Druillet's adaptation of Flaubert's Salammbo, but the voyages stand on their own as wonderful, tought provoking reading

Perfect Father's Day Gift...Even if you're not engaged!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-23
I'm getting married in December and when Jenna Bush got married I saw this author on the CBS Early Show, he wrote the book "8 Simple Rules for Marrying My Daughter" (same as the TV show I think) and I bought it to give to my dad, since I'm getting married in December!

I know he's going to love it because I already read it and it's funny, but kinda sweet. Lots of stuff in there about how if the groom doesn't treat you right the dad can have him shot, etc. which is totally my Dad's opinion. But in the end it made me cry, because it's really all about how dads think no man is good enough for their little girl. So true!

It's really cute! My dad is so hard to buy for, and I didn't want to get him another military or golf book, because I don't know if he even reads them, but I can never think what else to get!

Where Were You In '82?

Ahh, the 1980s. Those, my friend, were good times. Correction. Great times. Remember in 1982,when Disney bought the UK and opened the United Magic Kingdom theme park? Or the oil glut, when the trillion gallons of heretofore undicovered crude under Kansas assured America that "We're Eating More Oil Than Ever Before!" Or in 1984, when the movie musical extravaganza "Rats!" took the work of George Orwell, the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and created something so good, so powerful, that we were all forced to stop watching "Hello, Larry" for two glorious hours?

Christopher Cerf and Tony Hendra do.

Written in 1979 by some of the more important supporting cast of the oringional National Lampoon, this book was both a hilarious work of satire and a totally inaccurate guide to the future. Not since Vietnamization has the future been so completely mispredicted.

It is probably one of the last entries into that giddy generation of printed satire that began with the Lampoon in the 1970s. Evil, cruel and ridiculous humor met on the printed page with a ferocity and accuracy that Lewis Grizzard never quite could get down pat. Erma Bombeck, though...that's and entirely identical story.

If you find it, get it. If you can't, sit shivering alone in the dark, watcing Falco, eating Jelly Shoes, listening to your cassettes of Tip and the O'Neils, and wondering where it all went so terribly right.

I supplied the issues of Life Magazine to Dover that was used to produce this book. Carol did a fine job of selecting the illustrations used in this clip art book. They depict the age of the 20's and 30's nicely. I was pleased with the results.
