I admit it. I love to read in the bathroom. I've even been known to stay in there much longer than I need to (personal best... 1 hour... hey, I was enjoying what I was reading!). Uncle John's Bathroom Reader is a great way to pass the time in there. It is full of history, puzzles, stories, and other useless, but interesting, tidbits. Admit it. You want something to read in while you are in there. Go ahead and buy it. You'll be glad you did.

This book is so much fun. It's great for groups or alone. When one quiz is finished everyone wants more!! It truly is hard to put this book down. The questions are quite clever and intriguing. In the end, these questions lead to quite accurate personality identifications. I love this book and highly recommend it. It makes a great gift.

Ever been curious about if you were on televion if you'd be more the crazy wacky neighbor, or the nurturing parential type...

This book is highly contagious and very fun. My friends and I were testing ourselves on shows that we weren't even all that familiar with. ;)

A great purchase for anyone who's ever wondered about their television persona. Are you a Carrie or a Miranda? Mary Ann or Ginger? This book gave mostly surprisingly accurate answers.

My only problem with it was that I noticed some of the quizzes were missing one or two characters that I personally felt should've been included. No Lisa on the Saved by the Bell quiz, or Andrea on Beverly Hills 90201. So I do have to wonder if that would've effected my results any.

Oh well, still a great find nonetheless. I hope Noah is planning on a part II.

So have fun and learn about yourself as well.

So much fun. The personality tests are funny and amazingly accurate at the same time. Great to do with your friends or to pass time on your own.
With so many shows there is something in here for everyone. Its a great gift for someone you love - or for that secret santa person you have no idea what to get for them. Definite crowd pleaser.

This book is too much fun.

This book makes a great gift for your writer friends. After all, you can't just keep buying them nice pens for Christmas.... I found this while looking for a gift--and ended up reading it before I gave it away, though I wanted to keep it and tear out the pages to post 'round my desk. Really funny, really true (the best kind of humor).

'Writer at Work' is a high quality, thoroughly wonderful collection of Richard Krzemien's unique cartoons about the writing life. From the superb renderings to the pithy punchlines, each cartoon is a work of art in its own right. The keen eye will note the bookshelf in each drawing with a message specific to the cartoon written on the book bindings - a bonus addition to the cartoons. Funny and poignant - these cartoons can be enjoyed by writers and non-writers alike.

I know lots of writers, and they're all depressed. They're constantly getting rejected, having their work chopped to pieces, and generally suffering from a lack of self esteem. This book makes them laugh out loud; the relief is palpable...someone who feels their pain and makes it funny. And you can look at it more than once, because of the detail in the pictures; you see things in the background that you miss the first time.

I am a student of Persian and have found this book to be an excellent source of short stories that are both enjoyable and relatively easy to translate. The binding is sturdy and the pages are heavy and durable, (Important if you're going to make lots of notes inside!) All the vocabulary I had to look up could be found in the Hippocrene Standard Persian-English Dictionary, also available on Amazon.

Funny Stories for Speakers

I read Molla's stories in English not being fortunate to know enough Persian. I hope they translate more of these stories to English, because just mentioning Molla's name brings smile to the people who know him.

In the present times, in the US we have Woody Allen, and in the East the impaccable Aziz Nassin of Turkey whose very name make you smile.

Molla's Character is popular in the Middle East as well as the Indian subcontinent, the same way as another Persian storyteller, Scheherazade is. Molla, in the Persian culture is title for the learned men or teachers. When people saw someone with beard and turban, they already assumed he is a molla so they would throw their questions.

For instance, Once Molla was hammering the nail at the end of his donkey's bridle, as he was going to a teahouse. Someone asked him: "Molla, where is the center of the world." Molla said," The center of the world is where I just hammered the nail to my donkey's bridle." Someone said, " I don't believe this." Molla took a sip of his tea and said, " If you don't believe it, go measure it."

In the forties and fifties Molla became popular among British. Some English speakers, in the hight of tension, during Nationalization of Oil, used to quote Molla when they wanted to break the ice with their Persian counterparts.

The funny stories did not solve the problem, but opened the door for many translations in English, Franch, German and many other languages. I have seen the book translated in Arabic, Turkish, Ordu and Hindu. In each of these countries they have, in years, added more stories to the old ones, giving the character a native identity. I am sure the Arabic Molla has some particular stories and the Turkish one some other. Molla now belongs to every country in Asia, as Sheharazade does.

This book is, however, in Persian. As the English version was a lot of fun for me to read, I'm sure Persians, who have a great sense of humor, will find this book much funnier than the English translation. Enjoy it.--Khandeh dareh!

This book is the best gift for those hospitalized or going through lots of tests. We first discovered this gem when it was given to my teenage son during one of his many hospital stays. He couldn't stop laughing! The book is so funny because it really nails how you are feeling about every procedure. We now give it to everyone as a get well gift when they are hospitalized. Everyone who has received it has loved it! It really brightens up an otherwise gloomy time. As another review states, though, make sure that the patient won't do damage to themselves when they laugh.

I just got home from quadruple bypass surgery and my wife gave me this little book to make me feel better. Of course, she's a retired nurse, so maybe I should have been more suspicious. The book sent me into so many fits of laughter that I was seriously worried several times whether I might either rupture my new cardiac arteries or re-split my sternum. It's absolutely hilarious. But I'd advise you to wait until the patient is well into recovery before giving it to him. Either that, or have a nurse handy. And for God's sake, don't let anyone read it before they go to the hospital. I'm ordering a copy for each of my doctors as a "thank you" gift.

I almost soiled myself.

The book is worth buying if only for the following chapter alone-Procedures and Diagnostic Tests: Your Life as a Laboratory Mouse. The bit about a mammogram has been the grist for e-mail funnies, and it is only one of the descriptions Hammer deliciously conjures. From the chapter on surgery, this is a snippet of her humor: "Postoperative Activities: Walking. As soon as you've stopped throwing up, they will get you out of bed and make you walk. This is the Lazarus therapy used in the Bible, and it worked quite well for him." This book is good for people on either side of the needle. A real gas!

I thought this book is hilarious and a definate worthwhile read. I work in the hospital, training to be a nurse, and it was educational to read a hospital experience from a patient's perspective. I had to laugh at how very true this patient was when it comes to the attitudes and behaviors of the medical staff. I was laughing so loud that many of the staff and patients themselves were looking like I should be the one admitted! This would be the perfect gift for any patient or medical professional. What I would like to see next is a book on the staff's perspective on a patient!

This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who has had any kind of run-ins with anyone (doctors, nurses, etc.) from the medical profession. This book makes even the most painful and depressing moments hilarious. It's something that's great to read even while you're in hospital because you don't have to start at the beginning - you can pick it up from anywhere.I don't normally laugh out loud when I read, but I was absolutely rolling as in my hospital bed. I own a copy, and am borrowing it out to others! **Here's an idea - don't know what to get that friend that you are visiting in hospital who has already gotten 2 thousand flower arrangements? Order them a copy of this book - I promise that it will be the best gift they ever got. Even the medical professionals will find this a hit! Try out her other books as well!!

Just remember - try not to "bust a gut" while reading! Enjoy!

My wife bought a used copy of this book for me.....she wasn't sure if I would like it but since it was related to architecture, she thought she would take a chance...She was right on. It has a fresh take on a lot of the issues in the design and construction world. The author is not afraid to take on all disciplines and he is very successful. Some are a little "Far-Side-ish" but there is a lot of insight in the humor. And the drawings are really well done. I loved it. If you aren't sure this is for you, the author has an [...] website you can use for a test drive. My recommendation: This is a good book to have.

The Artist Within showcases comic artists and cartoonists, usually inside their own workspaces, for a unique and thrilling look at how these creative people surround themselves (and therefore what drives them to do the work they do). The photos are stunning, the reproduction brilliant, and any fan of comic art will find many favorites represented inside, with huge black and white photos by Greg Preston, brief bios, and samples of their work.

Greg Preston has done an amazing job of photographing some of the worlds most talented and creative artists and getting that extra insight into their personalities by having them pose where they work, in their studios. Since he's been at it for well over a decade, the book luckily remembers many that have since passed away. It's fantastic to see so many people that have inspired me while turning page after page of this huge hardcover, Hogarth, Toth, Wrightson, Kaluta, Smith, Romita among, well, around 95 others! This collection should also put Greg on the map as an exceptional artist himself. You wouldn't even have to care about who he's snapping a camera at to enjoy and appreciate his knockout skill. I'm looking forward to a volume two!

Where "Common Sense" Meets and clashes with "Systems Thinking"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-06
This irreverent collection of 52 "Peter Principles" of "What NOT to do" if one wants to become a successful problem-solving manager, is management thinking of a very high order. There is just nothing else like it in the management literature.

It is prescriptive thinking and advice that can be, and indeed should be applied to any field of problem-solving. It is nothing if not a reference manual on why "common sense" approaches should not be relied upon exclusively. Augustine, without trying, and without saying so explicitly, demonstrates how and where "common sense" often breaks down. That is not to suggest that Norm Augustine was not often an advocate of "common sense' approaches himself, far from it: he just always warned against complete reliance on common sense.

As one of only a handful of Analysts who had the privilege of working with Norm well before he became famous, and went on to become the CEO of Martin-Marietta, among his many other accomplishments, Augustine's Laws have evolved from Norm's own personal management style and timely admonitions, from the time of one of his first management jobs as Manager of the "Systems Analysis Directorate" of the Douglas Missile and Systems Division (which was at the time, soon-to-become "The McDonald-Douglas Systems Analysis Directorate."). Even then, Norm was cautious about over-reliance on "common sense" especially in complex-problem solving situations. He always wanted to "look beyond and behind" the common sense approaches.

At the time that I worked for Norm, he was a young honors math graduate from Princeton U. who hit the ground running as one of "Mac Narmara's whiz kids" ready to help solve the many problems of the "Cold War." He was thrown into a den of other elite and very talented Mathematicians and political scientists, to head up, and solve, among other interesting projects: that of helping to develop the MIRV missile system; designing launch vehicles to take payloads to the moon; and designing adequate missile defense systems (like the Nike-Zeus system) to protect the U.S. homeland.

I may be the only person in the world who still has one of his beautifully written unclassified mathematical analyses of how MIRVs actually solved the American "throw-weight' disadvantage problem with the then Soviet Union. Frank Eastman, Joe Rebholtz, Richard Johnson, Robert Young, James Brinsley, and Wayne Martin, all of whom are Phds now and who also went on to their own separate stellar careers, can testify to Norm's brilliance and skill at applying these 52 laws doing those heady days.

This is an invaluable compendium of pragmatic wisdom that should be tucked away in a safe place not just in the library, but also in the brain, always available for ready use.

This book describes to autor's knowledge in the aerospace and defense industries. Written with a lot of humor and unfortunatly the stories are probably true. A must

Norm Augustine has captured the government defense aerospace industry "sprawling on a pin" for dissection. In one particularly humorous bit he points out that just when the aerospace industry's trend to more and more expensive combat aircraft looked like it might be stalled since adding weight is anathema to aircraft -- along came something expensive and weightless to fill the gap -- software! This is one terrific book! Just the figure showing there is no correlation between what executives are paid and the performance of their companies is worth the price of admission.

I would not have ever expected to find myself laughing out loud, nor even smiling often while reading a book that discusses government projects and corporations who contract them. Norman Augustine provides a clear and critical insight into the corporate-government affairs world with just enough graphs and charts to make it comprehensible yet not overbearing. I found it as light reading - which is a virtue on it's own when reading about such complex a subject.

Accurate, Funny, and informative. This book captures the real (and not so real) world of government and other large projects spot on. Having been on both sides (NASA and contractor), there be truth in this wit. Enjoy. To be appreciated, best read while sitting on a $600 toilet seat.
