In a collection of poems inspired by some of the concepts fundamental to relationships between lover and loved. Glenn A. Fenster's FEELINGS AND PROMISES taps into the human experience of love, sex, death, connection, loss, hope, mystery and more.

The poem's subjects range from the very personal to the broadly elemental. He describes both beautiful scenery and complex inner emotions, sometimes within the same verse. This is an interesting collection that feels very accessible to those of us who might not read poetry regularly. At one poem per page, this slim volume of 69 pages offers a lot of material to explore. FEELINGS AND PROMISES delivers Fenster's view of the world, and in the way of poetry, asks us to consider our own.

Carefully crafted, elegant, lyrical, memorable poetry.

The poetry of Glenn A. Fenster is carefully crafted, elegant, lyrical, and memorable. Feelings And Promises is a superb introduction to Fenster's abilities and skills as a weaver of words, images, and feelings. Time And Space: Summers first rain,/Words drown./Obscurity creates disbelief,/Tears act as exoneration/A pain death could cause/And love could give./Standing in shadows/Swallowed by the light,/As recycled paper/Years fasten themselves/To pass as thorns/And ill advised moments/Only to be balanced/By the offing/That you pervade./Landscaped lives/Obtaining the malicious possessions/Time spaced by inconsistences/Of a man's life/We choose or become/Accept and be stagnate/Emotionally secured by either/We tend to lean upon,/Time and space.

Feelings and Promises: The poetry of Glenn A. Fenster,69 pages of poetry, 3 pages Table of Contents in numerical order and 3 pages of acknowledgements is dedicated to his brother Randy. Published by Gray matter Publishing & Design Co., Athens, GA. Glenn A. Fenster's Feelings and Promises is a fine philosophical collection of poems which speak out with an independent voice that shapes his creations the way that wind sculpts soft sand into visions of art. Among these excellent works are poems which etch picturesque cells of life. I particularly enjoyed the following: Dying Rose Petals ("My tongue felt your exquisite body reach out...") (p.12) Decades Have Passed... of this poem, it is as if Glenn is meditating with a distant Zulu shaman and is being taught secrets from the great book of mystery about the reason he must write. (p.23) Children ("Echoed sounds of passing trains / Become children turned into statues") (p.68)

Here are poems from a very personal perspective. The word "I" used in many of Glenn's writings, lets the reader know just how personal Glenn's "Feelings and Promises" are crafted into each poem. This book is recommended to read during those times when you search for answers within yourself, and also to understand as though looking inward, through another person's mind, just what that search has discovered.

Hi, I have read a few of my Uncle Glenn A. Fenster's poems even though he doesn't approve of me reading his poetry. I think his poetry is great. It expresses his emotions and feelings greatly. I truly like his work. Not because he's my uncle but because he as a true talent.

"FEELINGS & PROMISES" is just a wonderful collection of contemporary poetry. I found it to be insightful, soulful and thought provoking. As a fellow poet of "BARE BREASTED HEART" I could relate to the written words of this wonderful collection.

So much poetry is written in code where you really have to hesitate and wonder if you are comprehending the poetry as the author intended. This collection althought thought provoking bring you full circle to the intention of the writer.

I loved it and I encourage further writing from this poet! Would make a great gift or a personal treat to oneself.

Real life how-to help and tutorials

I bought this book shortly after it came out and felt an immediate connection to the author. Cindy writes from the heart. She gives a small section of information about what brought her from failed business to failed business (and yes, failed marriage too) to finally realize, by trial and error what she was missing from the formula.

She provides solid overviews of how to plan out the start up of a new business and shares the reasons that many businesses she tried failed and gives suggestions on what to do to avoid buying before thinking things through.

An entire section of her book gives step by step tutorials with many photos that clearly and simply make the production of personalized items like t-shirts, mousepads, puzzles, and all sorts of heat transfer personalized or custom made products. She even had a section on refillling cartridges even though she said it's really tough and didn't really recommend refilling.

I found every thing she wrote to be truthful and apparently from the heart of someone who's been down the road that many of us are now going down.

She stresses planning and asking questions and also gives her email address and invites all who have the book to write her for additional support when there are questions that come up later. I've written with her about what printer models are the ones to buy since they keep changing and she has been very helpful and nice in her emails.

I read what the person said in a review just now about how there was no information that would help them start and run a business. I don't know if that person read the right book or what. I found this book very helpful, motivational, and extremely informative.

If you're looking for a book about how to start a business and run it on a day to day basis with things like accounting or taxes, this isn't it. What this is, is a book that will teach you how to make personalized items and troubleshoot when things go wrong. It has a glossary that gives most of the terminology used with transfers and puts everything in plain, easy to understand English. I've read it several times because it always seems to bring me new information each time.

I recommend this book to anyone who asks me how I got into doing this business.

Great book, very informative.

I got this book so I could learn about T-shirt printing and sublimation.

Lots of great info on regular transfer printing on fabric, but not as much info on sublimation as I was hoping for.

A lot of good advice on running a T-shirt business and tips for attracting customers and keeping them by producing a quality product.

Best book for newcomers to heat transfer printing

After years of experimenting for great results I finally figured out most of the things in this book. However, I STILL learned a few tricks from Cindy. If this book had been available I could have saved hundreds of dollars in failed experiments. Well worth the small investment cost for this book for those serious in perusing this craft/art.

The only secret in this book is how the system works on paper instead of verbally from meetings. There are no revolutionary or radical concepts here, just plain sense and common knowledge.
Sometimes it is helpful just to have what you already know about a subject restated to get a different view. The information in this book is collected and organized in a way that you can use it. There are no radical diets and the use of exercise is just as important as diet.... There are a few Appendixes and some menus.

This is a good book or should I say manual on the regimen. A few acquaintances were on it and it does work. As every other diet plan ever conceived you have to follow it to get results. That's the bottom line. This is one of the more effective regimens that I am familiar with and it does work. There are no frills, just proven basics here.

Jenny encourages you to write your thoughts, record your goals, and outline your strategies. You can chart your journey--see where you've been and where you are going. Your success comes from within

I thought I was buying a workbook, you know a journal type thing you write in at least occasionally, but no, I think there are 1 or 2 pages you write in the rest is doctor tells you how. It would be better named 'Let doctors and tests decide how you do menopause'
I think there is some good info in there, but it certainly does not qualify as a workbook
I was very dissapointed

Diagnosis: improved my quality of life immensely.

At a time when doctors are rationing their time, and diagnosis is confined to laboratory test results, this book is an absolute godsend. Detecting whether one's estrogens, progesterone, thyroid hormones, cortisol, and testosterone are in or out of balance is a complicated business. These authors explain hormone function simply yet thoroughly. The checklists led me step-by-step through the process of observing and thinking through what was happening to my body, endowing me with the diagnostic savvy of Dr. House, and a way to finally talk to my doctor about things too easy for him to overlook and too easy for me to minimize, but later suffer in silence. A thorough discussion of replacement therapies including dosages and a comparison of delivery methods, complemented with numerous self-help strategies, made me feel confident that I could get help for what appears to be a relatively rare and not well-studied condition. I would like to tell Kathryn Simpson and Dale Bredesen MD, how fortunate I feel to have been able to buy and read this book, and how grateful I am for their writing efforts.

The clinical information, as well as the research, provided in this book spurred me on to make an appointment with an endocrinologist. It armed me with information regarding my thyroid condition and alternative medication for its treatment. I would highly recommend this book to any woman who is perimenopausal (or the man who loves her!) because it validates symptoms and gives possible reasons and treatments for them that would otherwise not be considered. My endocrinologist, fortunately, believes in using Cytomel in addition to Synthroid and I feel like a new woman!

I just can't say enough good things about this book and its balanced treatment of the issues (and no, I don't know the authors!).

Because I work in a related field, friends often ask me for advice as things start going haywire in perimenopause. I've bought a stack of about 20 books trying to find one that is a one-stop-shop for people so they don't have to just take my word on recommendations. This book is it. It's the book I would have wanted to write for friends and family if I had 48 hours in each day!

To give you an idea of the feel of the book: it provides references for the points it makes, but in a low-key way. It is much less information-heavy than "Screaming to be Heard"-- it is more focused on providing overview and analysis than an encyclopedic compendium of research. (By all means, if you want to learn a lot more about the subject, read Elizabeth Vliet's book, but watch out for typos, particularly the error in the conversion table of oral to transdermal estrogen. And if you're under 50, you'll find the new edition of her book "It's My Ovaries, Stupid" to be both relevant and more up to date-- just ignore the dumb title.)

Returning to the perimenopause workbook, it is that rare commodity: a book that doesn't fall into any of three camps: 1) the "progesterone is the greatest thing since sliced bread and will cure everything that ails you" camp (exemplified by Dr. Lee), 2) the "progesterone is miserable stuff and should be avoided whenever possible" camp (Dr. Vliet tends this direction), or, 3) the "estrogen is evil because the Women's Health Inititative told us so, so use it only when absolutely necessary and at as low a dose and for as short a time as possible" camp (this third camp still hasn't processed the results of the second arm of the WHI study, which pointed to the synthetic progestin, not estrogen, as a major culprit).

The authors of this book mention the large body of research indicating that estradiol by patch or gel (instead of oral horse estrogen) plus real progesterone vaginally or by mouth (instead of oral synthetic progestins such as Provera) has a very different, much more positive profile. I can tell you from reading all that research that they're right on the mark, and when they make generalizations they are backed up by research. So again, this book is about how to figure out how to make your life better, not a blow-by-blow treatment of the science. For that, you can turn to Dr. Vliet, or to some extent Dr. Uzzi Reiss' book (although it would sure be nice to have a new edition).

The weak spot in this book is that it's not heavy on specifics. It's pretty clear what regimen is likely to help a lot of women: the 0.1 Vivelle Dot patch, plus vaginal Crinone progesterone gel 14 days a month. But the authors are balanced enough in their treatment that they realize women may have too much, or too little, of either estrogen or progesterone at different stages in their perimenopause. They advocate looking for a knowledgeable doctor to do tests and plan a program, which is the right thing to do-- it's just that it can be a bit tough to find a good doctor. At the end of book it says there are tips on finding a doctor at the book's website, but I didn't find any referral ideas there (unless you happen to be near their clinic). Personally, I'd suggest doing a search for an "age management" doctor in your area, and then try to find one who isn't too into selling supplements. Fibromyalgia and fatigue centers can also be promising, although again taking with a grain of salt any "mitochondrial enhancement" or "dysbiosis" stuff they want to do. Or maybe you'll get lucky and your regular doctor or endocrinologist will be interested in learning!

Two more positive things about this book: It's not ga-ga about soy like some. And it covers adrenal hormones and androgens, unlike many that just cover estrogen and progesterone. (An otherwise very good book, "Perfect Balance," loses points for dismissing adrenal treatment.) One cautionary note: the graph of the menstrual cycle should say days 1 and 28 at the beginning and end, not days 7 and 21 (this typo could be confusing!).

In summary: Get this book if you want to feel better, and then find a doctor who will work with you on its absolutely evidence-based recommendations. If you don't just want to feel better and want to know all about this subject, you can continue on with books by Vliet (maybe her new one will finally come out soon) and Reiss. But this is the ONE book that succinctly pulls it all together from a perspective based in scientific research.

Dr. Ullis's guide to evaluating personal health and longevity status is an interesting exercise by itself. It made me think about aspects of my lifestyle and habits that I hadn't really analyzed before. After completing that segment of his plan I found a real motivation for implementing his suggestions. Especially helpful to me was the table explaining a wide number of supplement products. The table made it easy for me to sort out what would really help me from what might help me or what wouldn't help at all. Thanks, Dr. Ullis, for helping me feel more in control of my "lifetime!"

If you are looking for information you can apply in practice, such as the quantity of supplements you might consider taking and the respective scientific references, then it is not for you. In this case get "Renewal the Anti-Aging Revolution". It is the best I have read, period.

When I first tried this "diet" I was feeling very sick--obese and lethargic and completely down; I felt like this was my last chance.

After THREE DAYS on this plan, I felt 100% better. I didn't have the swelling in my feet and legs; I didn't have the bloating I had been experiencing. The first week I lost 10 lbs; the second week I lost 5 lbs; the third week, another 5 lbs. After that, I settled down to between .5 and l.5 lbs a week.

As long as I follow the plan, I feel great and lose weight or maintain weight depending on what I am trying to do.

This is the best "diet" for me because I don't have to weigh anything, I don't have to measure anything in detail (eye measure is about it) and once I had been on the plan for a few weeks, I knew exactly what I could and couldn't eat. Its the first plan that has really worked for me and been relatively plainless as well.

Works for me!

If carbs are an issue for you, I definitely suggest you give it a read. At the price you can get it used on here, I can't see why you wouldn't want to check it out! It is definitely about a lifestyle change though, not a quick fix. :)

A Compassionate Self-Help Guide
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-13
I began reading "Defining Your Life" because a friend asked me to. I continued reading because I discovered the author not only knew first-hand what he was writing about but that he was blessed with the ability to impart directions through sharing knowledge from which he had benefited. The conversational style puts a reader/seeker at ease. The Introduction almost doubles as a synopsis. A reader/seeker who turns to a self-help book can relate to this statement: "I had successfully insulated myself from reality." The attuned "graduate" can agree with this: "Today I still carry with me the lesson of `what actually is true' versus `what I wish to be true' and have learned ways to detect my own attempts at self-deception." In one short paragraph, there are both humility and triumph: "When I didn't know the answer, I sought professional guidance from practitioners who understood my desire to make lasting change in my life. I committed myself to listening to their advice and taking action. And, above all, I listened to my body and remembered that sometimes the body's messages are sent through mental and spiritual channels. When I was tired, I slept. When I needed fuel, I ate. When I needed alone time, I took it. And when I needed to have fun, I did so wholeheartedly."

"Defining Your Life" is studded with "Reality Checks" - forms that ask questions and provide the space for the reader/seeker to answer right then and there. And if one strays from the chosen path, instead of chastisement there is understanding and encouragement to re-focus on the goal.

I highly recommend this user-friendly guide.

In page after page I find myself gasping as William Knaus explains the different ways I have developed to procrastinate my life away. Knaus describes procrastination as a complex mixture of discomfort, self-doubts, perfectionism, fear of failure, anxiety, rebellion and depression developed over a lifetime. He explains how heaping blame on yourself only drives you to procrastinate more and he has created thought questions to help you develop the skills you need to pause, resist, reflect and respond.

A life changing weapon against the graveyard of missed opportunities, I highly recommend it!

Disappointing

Since there are only two reviews (well just one, really) I thought I should give my perspective to fill the picture out a bit. Remember, this is just my personal view.

I take it that the author is strongly influenced by Albert Ellis's REBT system. I don't know very much about it, but I would also guess that if you like Ellis' work, you'll probably enjoy Knaus' as well.

I on the other hand was turned off by the way the author presents his ideas. He seems to use complicated lingo--not always clinical, but usually obscure--to say things that could be expressed more clearly. For instance, towards the beginning we find that we'll diminish procrastination through "self regulation training". "Self efficacy is the belief that you have the power to organize, regulate, and direct your actions to achieve mastery. With high self efficacy, you'll predictably procrastinate less. With low self efficacy, you are likely to procrastinate more. Among the self regulation methods, the PURRRR acronym describes a six step--pause, utilize, reflect, reason, respond, and revise--process to keep your 'do it now' engine purring." And it goes on like that. While I don't disagree with what he says, I find that his writing style gets very little across. But I quoted him so that you can form your own opinion.

No matter how challenging this affliction can be for someone who is a confirmed procrastinator, dealing with it is not rocket science, and there's no need to obscure the matter.
