This is a great book, but the CD is what makes the package worthwhile (I rarely even look at the book anymore). The CD provides a user-friendly search engine that finds sites quickly and easily. The variety of web sites included is also very good. This Internet directory is vastly superior to any other I have used.

Members of the Internet community have seen a dramatic increase in the number of Websites that have gone online. Many of these sites offer top-notch news and other important information. Others don't. Microsoft Press has published The Official Microsoft Bookshelf Internet Directory to offer up-to-date reviews of over 6,000 of the Internet's most useful and informative Websites.      The Internet offers a number of helpful online publications, directories, information resources, computer hardware and software vendor sites, business, non-profit organization, and ministry sites, and more. This directory will put readers in touch with many of the resources they need to meet virtually every need they have. Topics covered include art, aviation, cars, computers, education, fashion, government resources, health, humor, literature, media, movies, music, news, parenting, real estate, religion, science, sports, and travel. I was quite surprised and pleased to find a Website belonging to colleagues of mine listed!      With knowledge and wisdom comes power and advancement. Readers will have an enormous amount of information and marketing opportunities available at their fingertips. This directory will give them a definite competitive edge in the business community as well as in the broader marketplace of ideas. They will also gain expertise and confidence with communications technology as they search the realms of cyberspace!      The concise entries, clear printing on white paper, and a clean layout contribute to quick access to the online resources listed in the book. The accompanying CD includes all the links in the current edition of the directory as well as the popular Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser. The CD points to a Website that will provide an updated listing of these links and additional ones as they become available!      Whether you're seeking information strictly for fun, pleasure, or profit, this directory will get the job done. You owe it to yourself to stay informed of what is taking place in the world around us. Invest in you future by investing in this essential resource reference tool today!

This book has good information about how to get local housing, but after that it starts to go downhill. What's missing is passion and interest. England is a fun place to visit, but this book left me feeling cold about England. Get the book for its advice on housing, but get a different book for the sights and attractions.

I used this guide for almost exclusively for England. The restaurant recommendations were the best - they were cheap, but good food. The attractions he recommends are great.

A must if you are planning to go to England.

I bought this book on recommendation from a couple I met in a lovely Bed & Breakfast which features in the book. Since buying it I have stayed in several places from the book and I have not been disappointed!
The accommodation listed in the book is definitely true to the description given by the writer, who has stayed in each one recently - the houses beautiful, the locations superb, the breakfasts delicious and plentiful, and the hosts always friendly, helpful and interesting. The guide contains both accommodation accessable for people using public transport as well as those with their own transport.
Don't be mislead by the title. 'Special Places' does not mean expensive places either.
Also the back of the book contains little extra touches like words to local songs, place name meanings, indexes based on suitability for families, pets, etc. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone travelling around Ireland.

Really special

I purchased this book just before my family went to Ireland a few years ago. We chose several places from the book as places we'd like to visit, and they really lived up to their billing. We've taken our chances and stayed at bed and breakfasts all over Ireland on other visits. This book made it easy to find a beautiful spot to stay. Most of the B&Bs from the book didn't require more than a few nights notice, so our travelling experience was still just as spontaneous as if we hadn't made any plans at all. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning a travelling holiday in Ireland and who wants to stay at some truly special spots!

Lucia Berlin is one of the most underappreciated short story writers and her latest collection is full of arresting portraits of women and their families in the contemporary American West.

DARKHORSE OF AMERICAN SHORT FICTION

As in her other collections, Berlin writes to-the-bone truths in language so simple and clear you won't know what hit you. "Where I Live Now" is as deep and honest as an old scar; it will tempt you to keep sneaking glances at its lumpy form, imagining the pain that put it there - and the impossible healing of which we are all capable.

Who I Read Now.

Lucia Berlin's prose sneaks up on you and, with spare simple language, bowls you over. As with her two earlier collections from Black Sparrow, Berlin fills these stories with sad, yet inspiring characters living on or near the fringe of society. We get to see the lives of teachers and nurses, people we usually view only in the context of their work, up close and in alarming detail. Berlin is a joy to read.

A Brilliant Critique

Review Date: 2007-01-31
This book offers an unforgiving, honest dissertation of the recording career of the Who. Though it may be not be entertaining for the casual fan, Mr. Atkins' layout combines nicely crafted, quite readable sentences with a careful description of each recorded song and its highlights. This is the first book I've seen that truly dissects this band's career from the very strong personalities of its members. Of course, those personalities and the live performances comprise the aura of what was this defining rock band, but the studio work of these artists is what we have for the future. Mr. Atkins' book celebrates that legacy without glossing over reality.

An in-depth look at the recording sessions of The Who. This book corrects many release/recording dates etc. that other books on The Who have gotten wrong. A hust-have for hardcore fans. No pictures. Excellent discography. I would have given it 5 stars if it were organized like a reference book (like an encyclopedia) rather than the liner form (like a Biography) that it is in.

Best Who Resource Book Ever

This book is the best book about the Who that I have ever read. Never has anybody taken the time to put all of this information down in one place. I feel that this book should have been out years ago and that every recording artist deserving a book like this to be written about their recording career should have the chance. If you don't have this book, get it now. It is the most helpful book that I've used about the Who ever. The price may seem a little steep but I would pay twice as much for this book. It is absolutely the greatest.

Next to the "Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms", this directory is the most essential guide for a legal job search.

the National Directory of Legal Employers is definitely a necessity for anyone thinking of goig into the legal business. it's widely recognized in the profession as the authoritative resource. i'd only say that because it's so comprehensive, it sometimes doesn't quite get into the details enough. I'd recommend something like the Vault Reports Top 50 Law Firms, which gives a great idea of what it's like to go work for a law firm, whether out of college or as a lateral hire. It's less comprehensive, but much more detailed and a fun read.

I think this book is a very useful guide for US stamps. The only thing that I was a little unhappy about with this book is I thought this would be the spiral bound copy like you see in the stores, but it is not. Otherwise this book is great! I use it to identify US stamps. It is much easier to use than a Scott Catalogue because under the picture of each stamp is a list of possible Scott numbers that the design corresponds with.

Very Helpful...but only buy the spiral bound version

Great quick reference book (and cheaper than Scotts Catalogue)...but the spiral version has two big advantages in my mind

1) You can tear out the pages that you don't need to make the book smaller and easier to use. For example I remove the United Nations, 1st day cover, famous autographs, duck stamps, Canadian trust terrritory and postal stationary sections.

2) It is easier to use the book balanced on your knee while checking eBay or folded in half next to your Stamp Album.

This ineffable statement of Georges Bernard Shaw would seem to be availed for this useful text of. Eric Asimov.

With more than 10.000 restaurants, New York offers an unparalleled opportunity to taste the cooking of the world. So in this order of ideas, you have the chance to win or let down, because there are many hidden gastronomic treasures of remarkable actuality, but besides there are a great number of bad restaurants; so the trick is to avoid them.

Through his personal and very engaging style, Asimov proposes us a true tour de force, classifying them by nationalities; simultaneously, he suggests us the best dishes of every local.

If you do not want to risk yourself and besides lack of enough time to enjoy of one the most gratifying and fascinating pleasures of the life, this book may become an excellent reference guide to discover unexpected places that you would never have found unless you have a sybarite fridn in this city.

Go for this; you have nothing to loose and much to win.

Upon deplaning in JFK I was hungry and lost. This book introduced me to the myriad good-eating opportunities in New York and the thrill of hunting down the best Roast Beef Sandwich or plate of barbecue. Though some of the places reviewed in 1998 have since closed, that state of flux and sense of serendipity is part of the exploratory experience in New York. This is an alternative (or quirkier supplement) to the ubiquitous Zagat guide. Asimov's book is as well-suited for a recently arrived student as for an experienced diner looking for pleasure in Manhattan's nooks.

Essays are always fun to read. I'm glad Lopate put together such a rich selection in the book. But why anyone in their right mind would choose such an UGLY cover is beyond me. I've always wondered who designs these things? Is it the publisher? Whoever it is, it SUCKS. But the content is great. So buy the book, but tear off the cover.

Review Date: 2008-06-09
Overall this book was very helpful. Most of the recipes are quite tasty, (something that other arthritis cookbooks often lack.) As a beginner arthritis-friendly cook, I found that some of the ingredients called for are a bit obscure, and occasionally pricey, but in general it was a worthwhile investment.

The layout is nice (one recipe per page) and the extra tid-bits of information offered on the benefits of certain ingredients are great.
