The best kept secret of crime litterature

These were the times of which the most infamous members of the mafia had built their names and reputations as we know them today. This is no reference to any sort of "Johnny Dangerously" type of lifestyle. This book acknowledges the criminal masterminds of the original syndicate, their influence, their beginnings and their fates. I name this one of the most informative pieces of literature published about the many faces and personalities of the criminal genius, and the sordid lives of the detectives hired to hunt them down. This was a book recommended to me by a high school teacher (of all people), "Hoodlum Empire" shall be a volume that I refer to in my thoughts and will be among those books which I recommend to any and all readers who dare ask.

Help for Domestication (and for humans that want to laugh)

Accepting Domestication is the third collection of Kevin and Kell comic strips, covering September 1997 to August 1998. The online comic strip is about the Dewclaws; Kevin, a rabbit, Kell, a wolf and their two children, Rudy, a wolf and Lindesfarne, a hedgehog. In a world where you next door neighbor could be your next meal, this "mixed" marriage subjects the Dewclaws to a number of inconviences: being looked down upon by Rudy's girlfriend Fiona's parents, a pair of foxes (though it doesn't help that Fiona's father, a fennec fox, is mistaken for a rabbit because of his ears), and occasional threats to Kevin's life (though not serious) by Kell's brother Ralph. That is not to mention the usual tribulations of modern life: trips to school hunting championships, predator retraining at Herdthinners, Inc., threats to be downsized, and getting invited to the Jerry Springer-Spaniel Show. Mr. Holbrook is able to create great characters and stories, while balancing the dictates of the familiar yet unfamilar world that his animal characters inhabit. As an added bonus to this collection is a 10-page "pamphlet" covering Domestication, a dreaded condition when wolves are proud to be decended from the Big Bad Wolf.

The definitive history of the Gulfstream Program

This is a superb book if you want to learn the truth behind the Gulfstream mystique. I was impressed with the depth of research and the writing that went into this book. As a Gulfstream owner, I knew that the company was a small part of Grumman, but I never knew it was considered the redheaded stepchild, or the battles that were fought over the company before and after it became its own company ... right up to the time it was acquired!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how an idea can become a billion dollar company.

Very nice condensed history, from a company that's 100 years old. Lots of pictures, and very informative for people that want to learn how the air conditioning, refrigeration and ice making started.

Throw those weights away!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-04
This is an amazing book. I have been lifting weights ever since I was in grammer school and I'm now in my late 40's. If I had access to this book back then when I started out, my life may have had a different out come. I know. I know. You're saying how could this book have changed everything?

Well, for starters once you read this book, you'll find out that lifting weights is a complete waste of time. All you are really doing is swelling up your muscles, making yourself bigger. You are not actually adding any functional strength. Yes, you do get stronger, but not in proportion to your size.

Even more importantly you'll never get those long lean muscles that you really want to have. I started lifting weight to attract girls, (hey, this was back in grammar school). In high school I kept on lifting weights to play sports like football and wrestling.

As an adult I continue to lift weights for strength and to look good(ok, I'm a little vain). However, my body just keeps getting bigger and bigger. If I had started the pull your own weight way originally, I'd be a tall lean stud by now (Hey, I can dream).

Learning to pull your own weight teaches you lessons that you can take with you your entire life. If I had followed the pull your own weight philosophy, I never would have gotten this pot belly around my waste (ok, maybe I could eat better too).

However, it's not too late. I'm determined to get back into shape. This book is helping me and it just might help you as well. Get this book and start learning how you can pull your own weight. I'm almost 50 and I'm learning how to now.

Raffles and the Match-Fixing Syndicate is a criminally adventurous ride through the modern era of international sports match-fixing. It's a crime thriller, escapist adventure, comedy and sharp social commentary. It's full of witty wordplay and understated modern humour. Adam Corres has re-invented the characters originally created by E.W. Hornung in 1899 and let them run riot in a new world - the increasingly decadent, dysfunctional and reliably unreliable society that many of us already recognise. Understand the world of the match-fixers; how it's done and how to spot their interfering hand. Follow Raffles, a celebrated English sportsman with an immaculate reputation, as he falls ever further from grace in his fatal, relentless, addiction to risk. Fascinating, never dull and pleasantly addictive stuff.

Nice overview of the Syndicate's mystery series
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-10
"The Secret of the Stratemeyer Syndicate" starts with a good, if brief, overview of the Stratemeyer Syndicate and its founder, Edward Stratemeyer.
It then moves on to examine in detail four mystery series created by the Syndicate: Ruth Fielding, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and the Happy Hollisters.
Of the four, the Ruth Fielding chapter is the most detailed but all contain valuable information on their respective series.
There are a few minor factual errors, such as the author's claim that Edward wrote the early Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books, among other minor gaffs.
Despite this, this book remains a valuable resource to researchers of the Syndicate and is a good read for fans of the series mentioned.

Invaluable aid for juvenile book collectors

Ms. Johnson's groundbreaking work into solving the mystery of the various Stratemeyer Syndicate Pseudonyms and series is a "must-have" reference book for serious collectors of juvenile literature.
All the popular series like the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Tom Swift and the Bobbsey Twins are covered as well as the history of many obscure series.
I bought this when it first came out years ago and it has proved to be an invaluable aid to me in my collecting hobby.
