Great book, well written with an informal and personal tone. Straightforward talk about sex. Perspectives and thoughts about sex within marriage that I've never heard before. Compare tone with "Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy". I read this book in two days and plan on reading it again.

Wow! Marla made the point that sex with my husband should be my hobby! I've been married three years and never thought of sex in that way. Everything is still new to me and to read this book helps me not only figure out myself, but my husband as well. I have learned so much through this book and read various chapters again and again to keep reminding myself of what God wants in my sexual life. Marla encourages us that we are not alone in our thoughts and feelings towards sex. Many woman deal with the same issues and Marla uses their words of wisdom in the book as well. This is a GREAT book and God will bless your marriage through it.

This book has a lot of great insight into the sexual side of a marriage relationship, what it means to your husband and how pleasing him in his desire for sex will bring satisfaction to the wife also. I appreciate that the author stresses the importance of sex being something to only be shared by a man and his wife. She shares some great hints and insights that when put into practice do prove to bring a couple closer in intimacy. My husband and I have both reaped the benefits of this wonderful Christian book!

So I got this book and I know I wasn't supposed to read it cause I'm a dude, (the book is kindof geared to women) but I couldn't put it down.

I gave it to my wife and we have both enjoyed the read. Marla writes as a peer and authority--her advice is priceless. I've got three friends who recently got married and I've recommended it to them. This is a perfect book for newly weds and old timers. Looking forward to Marla's next work!

Eye-opening look at the role of sex in a Christian marriage

Is That All He Thinks About by Marla Taviano is a fantastic read about the Christian outlook on sex. I was hesitant about the book at first, but the blurb on the back from the writer's husband Gabe made me take a look: Buy this book, read it and do everything Marla says. In the end, it was a great read. I learned a lot about how men think and why sex is so important to marriage. Taviano makes excellent points throughout. Women don't need sex to maintain their equilibrium like men do, but that's no reason for us to ignore their needs. She addresses it well in a conversation with a friend in which she asks what the friend's favorite things to do are. The friend responds with shopping and scrapbooking. Taviano asks her how often she would get to do those things if she could only do them with her husband. The friend answered "not very often, that's why I do them with my friends." But Taviano explains that sex is one of our husbands' favorite things to do, and they can only do it with us. Is it fair to not give them that opportunity? While many women (me included), use the excuse that if he was more understanding, sympathetic, helpful, etc., he'd get more, Taviano points out that we're going about it all the wrong way! Sex for men is a need, for most women it doesn't even register on their radar, but when a man's needs are being met, he's more likely to meet his wife's needs for cuddling, help around the house, and a sympathetic ear. She uses Bible verses to make many of her points, especially Song of Solomon. This book is a real eye-opener giving a new perspective on sex within the marriage. One small warning: the book is about sex, so it's occasionally graphic.

Excellent storytelling! The best read I've enjoyed for quite some time. Two people meet on a plane to NY, then decide to spend a bit of time together. It turns out to be a couple hundred years as they are swept back into colonial New York, where their bodies are inhabited by a tragic couple who, even in death, keep searching for each other. Using the present day couple's bodies, they are able to return to find and deal with those who had been responsible for their tragic endings. But the story isn't nearly that simple. It is light and romantic, dark and tragic, clear and mysterious, with more than one twist, leading to a conclusion which is satisfying, yet leaves us wanting to know more. The tale also takes us to 1760's London, to recognizable landmarks still existent in New York, and north to Indian villages. This book is in the tradition of Jack Finney, but set a century earlier, and while not strictly a time travel tale, will satisfy readers of romance, mystery, time travel, and historical fiction.

This was truly the best book I have read in a long time. Just like it says on the cover, I couldn't leave it alone until I finished the whole book, and was truly left looking for book two. Which brings me to my second reason for writing. I would like to know if there is a second part to this book. If there is not, there should be, because it is well done and really holds
your interest through the whole book. I will probably read it again just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

This is the best book I have ever read. There is something in it for everybody. It has Love, Mystery, History, Happiness and Sadness.
It was very well written and easy to read. Once I picked it up I could not stop reading it until I was finished and then read it all over again. Now I can't wait until a part two is published. I know it will be just as interesting as part one, and I want to be one of the first ones in line to get it.

One Sunday evening with nothing to do I picked up The Journey, thinking I'd read for a couple of hours. At 3:00 Monday morning I finished it. I haven't done that for 20 years! The story was captivating, to say the least. There's romance, mystery and a good deal of history that was magnificently woven through page after page. I know there's another novel tripping through this author's mind, even as I speak, and I want the first copy off the presses!

One of the best sports books ever

Review Date: 2001-07-26
When I was in junior high, I was addicted to reading juvenile sports fiction. Shortly after beginning seventh grade, I went to the alphabetical beginning of the fiction section in the school library and began moving down the alphabet. As I went, I examined the books and read all that were sports related. In a little over two years, I had read every sports fiction book in the collection. Of all those books, the Kid From Tomkinsville was one of the most memorable.
While the background of the 1940's made the presentation difficult for someone in their early teens in the 1960’s, the descriptions of baseball more than made up for it. Roy Tucker is the title character and an excellent pitcher. However, immediately after one of his best games, he slips and cracks his pitching elbow. This finishes him as a pitcher and the main theme becomes his quest to come back as an outfielder.
He is initially very effective and believes success is assured. However, he soon begins to struggle and doubts creep in. The description of all of this is a combination of one of the best baseball stories as well as one of triumph as a combination of talent, hard work and persistence lead to his success. I still remember the scene where his manager comes to his room and tells him the problem is that he is playing for himself and not for his team.
John Tunis is one of the best writers of sports fiction that has ever lived. He makes baseball exciting, even when all the action is taking place off the field. While our society has moved on to a point quite different from the time period of the story, baseball is still a game where strategy, preparation and dedication can triumph over athletic ability. That has not changed, and the descriptions in this book will continue to keep the attention of baseball fans for decades to come.

Great for young sports lovers

I recently read this book for my economics class. This books gives a new dimension to what happened during the gold rushes. This book focuses on the Klondike, one of the last great gold rushes. It gives great details into the way people lived and survived in the destructive climate that is the Klondike. It gives the reader an opportunity to read about the many people who "made it" and the many people who "failed". From poor factory workers who find thousands of dollars in gold to the people that were standing upon a fortune and didn't even know it. You will learn about the rise and fall of the "dictator" of Skagway. It gives you a glimpse into the mindset of a person going off to find his or her fortune. Overall I think it was a very well written book. I found many parts interesting. There was one thing that I didn't like though. This was the fact there were so many little stories mixed in with the bigger picture. I felt that at the end of the book I didn't really remember the people mentioned in the beginning of the book. I give this book a four. Hats off to Mr. Pierre Berton

This is an amazing book containing thrilling stories based on the "last great gold rush". Berton tells these stories in so much detail, that you'd think that you were traveling the Klondike, looking for treasure. It makes you realize that these prospectors were playing a real-life game of "hot or cold" when they got so close to a strike and left to search somewhere else. A must read for anyone who likes adventure stories.

Yukon Gold didn't used to be a potato

For those of us whose knowledge of the Klondike Gold Rush comes mostly from the 1950s radio drama, "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon" this is a fine book to read. (Trivia question: What was the name of Sergeant Preston's preternaturally intelligent huskie?) Originally published in 1958, "Klondike Fever" has proven to be a minor classic. (See note below concerning a new edition of the book.)

This Gold Rush, named after the Klondike River in the Yukon territory of Canada, was the last great scramble for gold in the old West. One hundred thousand persons, mostly from the U.S., set out for the Klondike in 1897, 30,000 or 40,000 got there, after an arduous journey through killing winter snows, and a few hundred found gold. The stories of the long, hard journey into this Arctic wilderness are often horrific. In one party of 19 men, 15 died or were killed along the route and the other four had eyes damaged by snow blindness. The gold seekers included author Jack London, Wyatt Earp, and poet Joaquin Miller.

The author tells a compelling tale of the men and women who participated in the Klondike Gold Rush. It was indeed a fever. The characters in this book include crusty old miners who suddenly became rich beyond their wildest dreams, stalwart, incorruptible Canadian Mounties, conmen like Soapy Smith -- who in the dramatic tradition of the West receives his just deserts -- prostitutes, madams, gamblers, angels of mercy, last-chance losers, rich adventurers, Indians, and missionaries. It's a fascinating read, based on research that included interviews with many of the oldtimers who lived to talk to the author in the 1950s. The author's standard of truth telling is high; he identifies a tall tale or an unlikely exaggeration when he finds them.

The maps could be better and the text would be enhanced if there were photographs, but I doubt you'll find a better book about the Klondike Gold Rush. However, "Klondike Fever" was revised in 2001 and the newer edition, called "Klondike" embodies new information and interpretations of the events that once took place in the land of the Northern Lights. All in all, I'd buy "Klondike" rather than "Klondike Fever."

Oh, yes, Sergeant Preston's dog was named "Yukon King."

Berton is one great writer! It was SOOOO entertaining to read the stories of all the different characters involved in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. This book NEVER GETS BORING!!! Read it for pure enjoyment or for writing a college history paper. This book is one of the greatest history books I've ever read! Check out "Ordeal by Hunger" by George R. Stewart too if you like miner/pioneer/gold rush history. It's fascinating too.

MY STORY HOW I ACQUIRED THIS BOOK:
I was in Skagway, AK (it was a port stop for the vacation cruise I was on) and I had been touring the area (ie, White Pass Train, car, etc.). I had this tour guide who was REALLY knowledgable of Yukon & Alaska history. I thought his storytelling was fascinating and asked him what ONE book would be the one to read concerning the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. This was the one he suggested. (He also said Pierre Berton was an excellent writer...I must agree this tour guide was telling the truth!) I almost forgot to purchase it! I had to run back to the bookstore in downtown Skagway and buy it so I could enjoy it for the rest of the cruise. I swear I was the last one on the boat! I started reading this book right when I got to my cabin and I was finished with it before the cruise was over!

As an Art History professor, I am very impressed with Leonardo's Notebooks. This oversized book contains Leonardo da Vinci's detailed sketches, many of which are new to me. In addition, this book provides commentary written by the artist himself on his theories, inventions, plans for artwork, and philosopohies. I've referred this text to fellow professors as a remarkable resource for philosophical beliefs presented by the original Renaissance Man.

Very good book.

The only thing keeping this book from top grade is that the author didn't help with a deduction of Leonardo's letters where it surely was needed - in the anatomical studies for example.
This makes it hard to understand the meaning of the drawings compared with the translated text, because Leonardo's letters(in the drawings) doesn't look like anything from the Roman alphabet. So when the meaning of the letters that appears in the drawings are mentioned in the text, you can't understand what letters goes with what in the drawings, because the text ONLY use the Roman alphabet(and NOT Leonardo's letters as seen in the drawings).

In other words, to fully get the whole meaning of Leonardo's writings and drawings you do need a "Leonardo - Roman alphabet" dictionary.
This is a major set back, and the worst is that the author could have avoided this so easily.

Other than that the book is amazing.

This is a great book that I had been looking forward to getting for a while. The images and writting is good, although a bit hard to understand at times. The ONLY problem I have with this book that gets it a 4 out of 5 stars for me is the fact that it is so tall and wide. Granted it makes looking at the pictures much easier but it also makes storage of this book MUCH harder. The book is to tall to stand on any but the top shelf on all of my book shelfs and it is so wide that it protudes from the edge of the shelf.

Don't let this distract you from getting this book however. It's detailed pictures are wonderful considering the orginal size of the works and the translations help with the reading. There's a section for each catagory, such as anatomy and lighting, which really helps if you want to look at certain types of works. The greatness of these pictures will have you looking at each page for hours, just to see all the details.

I would suggest this book for anyone from an art lover to a history fanatic. I use it as a reference book for one of my drawing classes. It's a great buy for anyone and everyone.

I'm a big fan of motivational literature. However, this book is a little tepid. It might be because the material is pretty old and the writing style and anecdotes reflect the era in which it was written.

It does have some classic principles and it's not a very long book so it's not a total waster of money. I would look for it at a flea market, though. In fact, I bought it used through an Amazon store and it came to me all yellowed and very old looking. It might not even be available new anymore. I'm not sure.

This book is one of the most powerful, yet easy to read books on the market and it's principles are timeless! It's truly a "SIB KIS" work of art. I have had the pleasure of hearing the author speak and most recently a 90 minute private tour of his business where he personally directed me to classics by Oswald Chambers, Spurgeon and could quote passages and find their location from memory. This visit was unannounced and Charlie had just returned from a chemo treatment! Charlie is living proof of his claims and if any one doubts the connection he makes with our creator to these principles needs to spend just five minutes with him to understand their validity. Charlie is "suffering" with terminal prostate cancer. Yet to see him, be hugged by him and hear the energy in his soul would put most young people to shame. Charlie has no fear of his future and actually is looking forward to this next phase of his "journey". I have read many books that "tell" people how to live. Charlie actually lives his philosophy and tells them to stop trying to be perfect and enjoy the one who is! If you read this book years ago and found it helpful, read it again as odds are you situation in life has changed, but fortunately these principles have not. Even better purchase several books and share them with your friends, family and business associates, it's a great way to pass on the powerful message that can benefit anyone who dares to take them to heart.

I have heard Charlie Jones speak many times. His program designed to turn his kids into readers worked in my family too. This little book is a real gem. It can be a lifesaver on days when there seems no place to turn to for encouragement. His persaonal responsibility attitude is much needed today. Rather than looking for the most fulfilling job or purpose in life it is far more useful to be responsible and turn our lives into positive and purposful examples for others. Life truly can be tremendous if one has the right perspective. Charlie can help you there!

Mandie is happy that she finally has her family back. Her biological Mother has just married her Uncle John, and the three of them, or rather the four of them, if you count Mandie's beloved kitten Snowball, are preparing to go stay with Uncle Ned and the rest of the Cherokee Indian tribe. Mandie's best friend, and probable future husband, Joe, will also accompany them on their journey. When they arrive, Mandie hears of a mysterious legend involving the Cherokee people and long-lost gold, that has been hidden for centuries by an Indian chief. As Mandie, Joe, Snowball, their new friend, Sallie, and their new enemy, Tsa'ni begin exploring the Indian grounds, they stumble across treasure. Now Mandie is worried that the treasure may bring a curse upon the white men who find it.

As someone who absolutely adored Lois Gladys Leppard's previous tale about Mandie, MANDIE AND THE SECRET TUNNEL, I was skeptical about MANDIE AND THE CHEROKEE LEGEND living up to it. Surprisingly, MANDIE AND THE CHEROKEE LEGEND was just as good, if not better than MANDIE AND THE SECRET TUNNEL. Mandie is an exciting character, who is spirited, and loving towards everyone she meets, whether they are kind to her or not. I really love the way that Lois Gladys Leppard introduces a few new characters into each story, as it keeps the books fresh and interesting. Fans of MANDIE AND THE SECRET TUNNEL must read this book. You won't be disappointed.

The plot is about a missing turkey, which didn't really appeal to me, but otherwise the book was good. The end made me hungry for the next book!!!! If the mystery weren't so boring, this would be one of the best Mandie books ever.

Awesome!

Mandie and the Long Good-Bye is probably the best Mandie book I've read. Joe is going off to college, but Mandie tries to put it off for as long as possible. A turkey is missing from the kitchen oven, so Mandie, Joe, Jonathan and Sallie search for it (along with the annoying neighbor Polly). Suddenly Dr.Woodard, Joe's dad, disappears, and things get more serious. No matter what Mandie does, she knows that soon Joe is really leaving. The ending leaves you DIEING for the next book and an answer to a question!

Should have been called 'Mandie and the Turkey Theft'

Joe will be leaving for collage soon, and Mandie tries to put off the parting as much as she can. But things start looking even darker when Dr. Woodard disappears along with the Thanksgiving turkey. This time Joe puts no restrictions on her, seeing as the missing person is his father.
All their wanderings lead to a very surprising-and scary-discovery.

This book could have been better. I was puzzled that Lois Gladys Leppard titled the book 'The Long Goodbye' when the goodbye doesn't come until the end, and takes up about 2 or 3 pages, that's it. It should have been called 'Mandie and the Turkey Theft' or something like that.

I accidentaly stumbled across this book while searching through endless pages of books, here on Amazon. I am so glad that I did. I've always been fascinated by mermaids and have been building my own collection of mermaid books. This is the best mermaid novel that I've read. I'm sure that this will become one of my all time favorite books.
The story is centered on one mermaid's struggles to uncover the truth of her lost heritage and to claim her rightful place in the sea. It is a beautiful and well written story. I highly recommend it as a must read for mermaid enthusiasts. Other books that I recommend:
Sleeping with the Fishes (Fred the Mermaid, Book 1)
Swimming without a Net (Fred the Mermaid, Book 2)
The Last Mermaid
Goddess of the Sea (Goddess Summoning, Book 1) (Berkley Sensation)
The Mermaid's Song
The Changeling Sea (Firebird)
The Mermaid Summer

A very special book

I am not a avid book reader, but I couldn't put the book down. It gave a new meaning to the sea. A went to school with Alida and she was a very special person in my life. I am sorry to tell all she passed away a few years back and there will be no sequal. It would have been wonderful I am sure. Pick it up and you will devour it. Wonderfully written!

In all my years of reading, absorbing and devouring books. I have never found another like this one. Alida Van Gores should be found and prasied. The brilliant world of the Merra brought to life with such cleaverness. She's created what's reffered to by fans as the "Holy Grail" of mermaid fiction. Alida if you ever read this, I want you to know, my daughter falls asleep each night to the songs and legends of the Merra.
"Start a ripple, change the sea and all that was will ever be."
You changed the sea Alida.

Alida Van Gores won't write anymore...

For all of us who have been searching for another book - any other book - by the author who wrote Mermaid's Song, I found this on the web today. It's dated July 5, 1998.

"Author and screenwriter Alida Adrianna Van Gores died of breast cancer June 3 at her home in Laguna Beach. She was 47.

Van Gores began her career as an artist, but soon moved on to writing. Her first novel, "Mermaid Song," was published in 1989, and she was working on her second novel when she died. Also, Van Gores wrote the teleplay for the 1984 CBS telepic "He's Not Your Son," and her screenplay "Marooned" was recently optioned by Itaska Films."

She wrote the perfect mermaid book, but there will only be one.
