A story that grows on you as time passesReview Date: 2001-08-11
This is the story of Felicity and Sonny.....life-long lovers with a turbulent and sometimes downright heartbreaking relationship. Felicity, 20 years Sonny's senior, is brazen and even loopy at times. She lends a great deal of humor to the story as well as veiled sadness.
Sonny, on the other hand is a huge jerk throughout most of the story as he becomes more and more bitter and jaded. Felicity seems to be the only spark left in his life...a spark which he almost puts out.
Running parallel to the story of Sonny and Felicity is the tale of Gravelda and Genipur. They are two rather primitive tribal people who are hauntingly similar to their modern-day counterparts. It's a story that Felicity tells to Sonny in chunks over the years as their meetings become fewer and farther between. The story allows Felicity to quietly vent her feelings about her relationship with Sonny.
This is a book that, even if you become a little dazed about in the process of reading, will stick to you long after you've read the last page. Far be it from me to withold credit where credit is due....and I must admit, this book is a jewel.

"Their Eyes Bore No Soul"Review Date: 2007-09-23
"Eastside" is the literary entrance to a look-see of gang life in the hood for real. If you loved 'Boys N The Hood' and 'Menace 2 Society' welcome to a more gut wrenching story than those two. Caleb's characters are so raw, they're cold blooded killers, but the love and allegiance that they bear for each other is stronger than you could ever imagine. He introduces us to Travon 'Tre' Robinson, who tries his best to stay away from the gang life because of the loss of his brother, but the pull of the hood is like a black hole, that continues to tug and tear at the young black men, that they either succumb to the life by omission or commission.
Caleb's plot is so addictive that despite the disgust that may emerge from the senseless killings, he keeps you enthralled with the slightest glimmer of hope that somehow, someone will be able to overcome the murderous antics and trials that follow. His depiction is so vivid, he challenges your ethics and provokes your thoughts in what could have been done different. Is there anyone or anything that could have stopped this treacherous, destructive craze that swept our country and captured so many of our African-American youth by the two greatest grim reapers of all times, the grave or the penintentiary. He addresses the stands that the mothers did try to make, although some may feel they were weak, he unveils all aspects of 'the life'.
Caleb Alexander's literary skills are magnificent and he will definitely continue to build a steadfast fanbase with his effortless, yet unique and original talent. Major, major props to you Mr. Alexander!!! Thank you for a wonderful piece of work!! Kudo's to you my brotha!
Saving our Sons!!!!!Review Date: 2007-09-11
Eastside does way more than just highlight Trevon's struggle, author Caleb Alexander shines a brutal and yet honest light upon the gang violence that is still plaguing our communities. And although the portrayal is disturbing to read about is it far more disturbing for our youth that have to survive daily in these environments. And for this reason alone Eastside should definitely be required reading so an effort can be made much like Elmira Robinson's attempt to save her son.
Can I Live?Review Date: 2007-09-07
This is the story of Travon "Tre" Robinson walking in the shoes of his deceased big brother To-Low. All Travon can remember is their last conversation. "Tre don't ever join a gang. I do this so you don't have to" However, everyone around Tre is so deep into the gang life that he has no choice. It's either Blood in or Blood out.
Sent to live with his kinfolk, Tre has no idea how serious the hood really is. Will Tre learn to get down and live by the code of the 'Blood' or will he allow the last conversation he had with To-Low outweigh what's going on around him and live?
Eastside was so enjoyable that I really had a hard time getting my words together. Mr. Alexander really touched on every aspect of gang life, police corruption, and the relationship between mothers & their sons. Throughout the whole story, the author kept trying for Tre to stay positive.
Take a walk with Caleb Alexander as he introduces you to the hood. This is the real hood as far as I'm concerned. I've never read a book with so much violence before now. However, the violence paints a wonderful picture of one young man's struggle to live. Eastside is definitely a must read.

My daughter's first real chapter bookReview Date: 2005-12-09
In the middle of the book, when Pickles the cat has a small triumph, she said "it makes me cry!" and at the end she said "I wish it just kept going". I felt so glad for her to have the experience of what it's like to read a good book - these are the feelings that make one a real book lover for life!
Like another recent reviewer I thought the pictures a little crude but the cats were remarkably cat-like; there was no effort to make them cute or cuddley. Yet, perhaps because of that simplicity, Pickles invokes a strong sense of feeling/identification as the he "grows" into a better cat through the three short chapters.
I think this was the perfect book for my daughter to read at this time. Just challenging enough, a great story and illustrations that work very well with the story. I'm also am glad to find a good children's book that's NOT about a boy (though Pickles IS a "he"); I'm sure all parents with daughters know that the vast majority of kid's books are about boy hero (yes I know there are some excellent exceptions) so a wonderful book that's not about a boy is a great find.

In Austria, the lives of a Nazi camp guard's wife, an American GI, and two prisoners are intertwined as they deal with the effects of Hitler's plan to exterminate the Jews and their supporters. They learn that God can bring healing and new beginnings from dust and ashes.
I couldn't put down this fascinating book, and highly recommend it to everyone!
From Dust and Ashes reviewReview Date: 2005-09-21
Helene, whose husband escaped before the Americans could capture him, is faced with seeing the men, women and children that her acquaintances starved and mistreated. She has a 4-year-old daughter and a baby on the way. Her heart goes out to the Jews and other freed prisoners, as guilt pricks her conscience, and she takes in two women to feed and care for. One of them, Michaela, a Christian and preacher's daughter, is shocked to find what Helene's husband was, but is willing to share the good news with Helene.
Peter, a soldier from Montana, feels responsible for the happiness and well-being of these women. He soon falls in love with one, but is faced with a bitter disappointment when she decides to follow God's call, rather than the temptation of leaving her homeland for America. He continues to help them both, after they all part ways, with his influence in the army.
Helene feels trapped when her husband's plan of stealing Jewish money is made known to her. His friend and fellow SS guard thinks she holds the key to getting this wealth and will stop at nothing to get it for himself, even threatening her life and the lives of her children. Her new faith in God must give her strength to make it until the trials against the guilty Nazi party.
Tricia Goyer paints a beautiful picture as the characters travel throughout post-war Europe. Her characters spoke to me about God's will for their lives and gave a hope that life can go on after such atrocities. She has kindled an interest in this era that will have me looking for more books, by her and others!

George Shrinks Review Date: 2007-04-20
I gave this book a five because a little kid name George has a dream of him being small like a "teddy bear". When he had the dream he was in his bed sleeping, his mom left a note of chores and he was doing the chores. The "scary" part in the book was when the cat sees George and thinks his is a toy and the cat tries to put his claw on him ,but George runs and hides from the cat. This book is great and I think William took a long time doing the cover and pictures and I say the book cover and pictures are really beautiful. I love this book because he had a dream that was weird that he was small and that he had to do big chores. I would recommend this book because it is a cute book for a 1st and 2nd graders I think they will love it because all of the cute pictures and the funny pictures they would love to read this book a lot of times and I would like to some day read it again because it would be so nice to read it over and over.

Nietzsche at his Aphoristic BestReview Date: 2006-07-20
Start hereReview Date: 2008-06-09
I am somewhat obsessed with Nietzsche, and this book started it all. Do not dive into his later, more well known masterpieces (Beyond Good and Evil, the Genealogy of Morals, The Gay Science) without acquainting yourself with this book. It is an introduction to his style, and there is no better example of his mastery of psychological observations. In this book he comments on all elements of social reality ("no one thinks to thank the clever man for restraining his wit when in the company of those who cannot practice wit" for example), going into love, friendship, the tenor of social gatherings, absolutely everything that is psychologically investigatable. He brings this method to his later books, in which he tackles larger issues, like the history of religion, philosophy, morality, and other things. But it all starts here-his later critiques of Christianity and everything else are far more understandable after a thorough acquaintance with his psychological method, first and best presented here. If you are at all sensitive and introspective, this book will move you to tears more than a few times.
