This book was great, one of Dickinson's best, and I've read them all (course the Widows' Adventure ranks up there, too!!). Very unusual book in that it has no chapters, just starts on page one and zips all the way through to the end. A fun, thought-provoking, unique excellent work.

My boyfriend flipped over this book. As a very young boy he was alsways sent Rupert books from his Aunt in England and always spoke about how he loved them. He was thrilled to get this one as a Christmas present now that he's 61 years old! It was received in perfect condition and he absolutely loved it.

After viewing Allan Cohen's slide show history on the "Haight-Ashbury in the 60s" CD-Rom, I decided to buy the SF Oracle Facsimile Edition. It is a beautifully crafted treasure trove, which allows you to go back in time and revisit the days of Haight-Ashbury in its purest form, from the point of view of the artists and mystics of the day.

Though I was only 12 years old during the Summer of Love, I used to shop on Haight Street until one day I was told I couldn't go down there anymore because of the Hippies. Of course I went anyway, and became hooked on the colorful posters and music. Let this book be your guide to a really interesting time in our history.

LONG LIVE THE SAN FRANCISCO ORACLE!!! This is one of the best publications of history. You can print out everything and color in stuff and there are colored pages, too. Has all 12 issues with all of the fun, pictures, articles and stories! There are many typos in the articles-but this is natural due to it being underground, cheap (15 cents a copy!) and from the 60s. Get it-you won't regret it!

If you are trying to find information about a SF&F magazine that was printed before 1985, this is your best source to find it. It lists all of the major magazines and even lists the magazines that lasted only 1 or 2 issues. It is an invaluable resource for the collector.

A new way of looking at news

People don't read every word in newspapers, they "get into them every morning like a hot bath," Marshall McLuhan is quoted in this book as saying. Kevin Barnhurst describes that hot bath in this very readable book, which presents what academics are learning in this field in terms the average person can readily understand. The newspaper is an environment, and its layout, design and photography shape our perception and absorption of the news. The medium may not be as totally determining as McLuhan believed, but the form certainly shapes the content, and it does so it ways that even people in the business (as I have been) don't really understand. Seeing the Newspaper helped me to understand why this matters, and how it occurs.

Sez Liz keeps it real

Sez Liz is the last book in a series by an author with moxie who translated life from a privileged home in Augusta, Georgia to a primitive farm in Princeville, Illinois. Her life is filled with humor because she chooses to see the humor in the trials of life and her stories are full of understanding because she sees beyond the ordinary. Her unique stories led her to become a keynote speaker throughout the Midwest, an author, a radio personality on a PBS affiliate, columnist for the Peoria Journal Star, and featured in the Illiois AgriNews. Her books are delightfully written. I have them all.

Mr. Siklos' biography, for those who want to get the measure of Conrad Black, is close to definitive. He not only corrects minor inaccuracies in Peter Newman's THE ESTABLISHMENT MAN, but he also extends the story right up to the 2004 ouster.

As you read through it, you'll see certain parallels in Black's life emerging. Conrad Black was the younger son of a businessman who retired early, at a time when retirement at forty-eight was considered odd. As a child, Conrad had a capacious memory, honed into perfection by his father's training of him. He was mentored by Bud MacDougald, the top boss of a dividend company named Argus. It was there that Conrad Black hit upon the idea of accumulating cash flow to use for takeovers, and where he developed an inclination for asset shuffles and corporate reorganizations. Previous to Black being ushered into the Argus world, he and his long-time partner, David Radler, had built up a chain of newspapers, Sterling, almost from the ground up. The secret behind their success was, essentially, cost-cutting. Black had found some notoriety as well as fame from his writings, but it was his takeover of Argus, a true coup, that brought him fame as a businessperson in 1978. Notoreity followed fame when two of the companies controlled by Argus began to founder; he also encountered some legal trouble in the early 1980s.

Conrad Black does have a law degree, and is comfortable following precedent or custom, but is also comfortable with grey areas in the law, and in pushing the envelope of custom or tradition. (An example of this last trait would be his supplementation of Mr. MacDougald's strategy, of using the accumulated surpluses in Argus plus some borrowed money to acquire more shares of companies he thought were undervalued, by borrowing copiously instead of sparingly.) These traits are evident throughout Mr. Siklos' book. Those who want to get the measure of Conrad Black would do well to pay close attention to part 1 of the book, as it describes Black's return to the station of a newspaper proprietor after learning much about financing and asset management at Argus, later folded into Hollinger Inc.

I read the original version when it first came out, and can vouch for the claim that it is "expanded and updated." If you're interested in Conrad Black, you may wind up reading this book a few times, not only once.
