This is my first read book by Richard Wheeler. I was very moved. The accounts of the West for this gold rush town seemed vivid in my mind as I read. Very emotional ending. Sadly Fabulous! This book speaks to a person's heart!

the second in the finest mystery series ever

i have been reading mysteries for decades. i have favorite authors whose books i reread with pleasure. but my absolute favorite for the last ten years is kerry greenwood and her phryne fisher series.

the novels are incredibly well-written and well researched, have wonderfully twisty plots, great dialogue, clothes, food and drink. phryne fisher is a complex and fascinating character with, thankfully, no angst or moral quandries. she has ethics and morals and acts on them fearlessly.

there is humor of all kinds as well as suspense. the twisty plots also pay homage to the plots of the golden age of mystery, the period between the wars when mystery writing became culturally acceptable.

even non-mystery lovers would enjoy the series for the fascinating facts from australian history. the only thing ms. greenwood doesn't include is footy, probably because our phyrne lives in st. kilda. it's not a noticeble lack.

This is the most interesting book I've read about the work of newspaper correspondents in the field. While focusing on a handful of campaigns against the Indians in the West mainly during the 1860s-1870s, Knight traces the role of the assigned correspondents who marched with the soldiers, sometimes fought (and died) with them, and somehow wrote the stories and got them back to their respective newspapers under trying conditions.

Although Knight deals with 12 major campaigns between 1866-1891, he centers his attention on chiefly the following:

Crook's campaign against the Paiute in Oregon (1867-68), reported by Joe Wasson of the "Owyhee Avalanche" of Silver City, Idaho;

Custer's attack at the Washita in the winter of 1868, with reporter DeBenneville Keim of the "New York Herald" in tow;

The Modoc War along the California-Oregon border in 1873, attended by a number of reporters, chief among them Edward Fox of the "New York Herald" who interviewed "Captain Jack," the Modoc leader;

Crook fighting the Sioux at the Rosebud in 1876, covered by reporters from Chicago, Denver, and New York;

and Custer again at the Little Big Horn, where Mark Kellogg, claimed by two newspapers, became a hero after being killed along with Custer's men.

Although Knight of course is mainly interested in the newspapermen and what they wrote and how they delivered their stories, he also gives a pretty detailed account of the events being covered. His writing is clear and concise, and he shows how newspaper stories of those times were much different than today: many of them were written in the form of letters to the editor, the writer's own prejudices were usually allowed to stand, and often the writer employed a droll sense of humor in his accounts. At the end of the book Knight traces the life of his newspaper "heroes" beyond the times covered in the book to the conclusion of their careers. It's an interesting and entertaining book. Knight concludes his work by saying that the newspapermen did their jobs well. So does he. Highly recommended.

Do not read this book unless you have lots of running around the room space. The first hand account of the Azusa St. revival from someone who lived it put meat on all the sound bites I had heard about the revival. Bartleman is uncompromising and a bit direct (very un PC) at times, but his unrelenting search for obedience is amazing. Reading the details of what God has done before and what He could do again is running around the room powerful.

Entertaining Autobiography.

This is the story of Jack Smyth who used his life savings to buy a small newspaper in his hometown. He did not have a background in newspaper business, but devoted enormous energy into figuring it out. His devotion paid off in that his business developed into what is known as Independent Newspapers, Inc., that publishes community newspapers in several states. Jack Smyth made many relationships along his journey including being invited to national political conventions and being invited by President Kennedy to give a breakfast prayer. He was able to also convert a weekly newspaper into a daily one. This is a very entertaining story of a man who figured things out as he went and enjoyed meeting people and developing relationships with people he met along the way.

Always a fan of good, wholesome TV shows like "Full House." Nice to see a new Full House series. It keeps the fan favs, class clown Jeff & his friend Lucas, plus Cassie and Mandy. And, the Book Universe Michelle is as great as ever. Michelle writes for her 3rd grade class paper that the whole school will read. And, she investigates a "ghost" in this girl's supposedly haunted house. Bit spookier than most FH books, but still good for little kids, like the "Further Adventures" ones. (This may be the reason, to attract the mystery readers to "Full House.) Michelle's 1st person POV is a plus. We learn Cassie's afraid of lots of stuff, so kids who are afraid of more stuff won't feel alone. And, we learn the real "fhost" is actually...something you'll have to see for yourself.

Thomas Bivins identifies USA Today as a model, with its colorful banner, easy-to-follow page design, full-color photographs, inviting table of contents, and short articles. As FUNDAMENTALS OF SUCCESSFUL NEWSLETTERS guidelines, the author also points to simple graphic design, with boxes, sparingly appropriate illustrations or photographs, rules, tint blocks, and no more than two typefaces, used not only for getting out an entertaining or informative or persuasive message but also decoratively as initial caps, pull quotes, and reverses. He then throws in limiting printing to two colors, with black, dark blue or dark brown giving a quality look; blue, brown, or green screening nicely as a second color; and with colored paper lending a second- or third-color look. Finally, he sees the end goal as a compatible, consistent, unified artwork all in black and white or all in color, with all formal or all informal text layout and with optically weighted sequencing from left to right and from top to bottom on each page of big to smaller, bright to muted, colorful to black and white, dark to lighter, and unusual oddly shaped to usual. It works particularly well to pool the book's information with Barbara Fanson's PRODUCING A FIRST-CLASS NEWSLETTER and Rita and Roberta Street's CREATIVE NEWSLETTERS AND ANNUAL REPORTS.

Important and rare tribute to Gehenna and Baskin

Review Date: 1999-02-21
As a beginning student in graphic art, I heard Leonard Baskin speak at the opening of a printing exhibition at Washington University in St. Louis. That experience made The Gehenna Press and Baskin's work alive for me in a way that simple research could not.

This book contains a bibliography of Gehenna's work which is annotated by Baskin, and that in and of itself makes it beautiful and invaluable. It took Amazon two years to locate the book for me, but it was well worth the wait. If you can find a copy, buy it and cherish it!
