By the time he was 30 years of age, George Q. Cannon had been a printer's devil, a religious refugee, an 1847 Utah pioneer, a member of the great Mormon trek of 1849 across the southern Great Basin to California, a gold miner, a Mormon missionary to the Hawaiian Islands, and finally, the editor and publisher of the San Francisco "Western Standard". Compiled and edited by Roger Robin Ekins (Professor of English and Chair of the Honors Program at Butte College, Oroville, California), Defending Zion: George Q. Cannon And The California Mormon Newspaper Wars of 1856-1857 is the latest and fifth volume in The Arthur H. Clark Company's outstanding "Kingdom in the West: The Mormons and the American Frontier" series and which details the published journalistic defenses of Mormonism in the 19th Century by a capable and articulate defender in a time when the newspaper was the most potent and powerful means of mass communication and persuasion for social, political, and religious causes. Defending Zion is a welcome and invaluable contribution to Western American History Studies in general, and The Utah War episode which saw President James Buchanan launching a military expedition to Utah so costly that it almost bankrupted the United States federal government on the eve of the Civil War.

An excellent guide to an overhyped technology
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.

Delivering Push delivers. This guide presents information for both users and developers, though I found the information for developers most useful. Unlike most of the media treatments that pushed push as the next big thing, this book stops to consider what push technologies might actually be good for.

I read this book as a child at my grandparents' home, but was unable to find it since they passed away. I found it quickly at Amazon, however. It arrived quickly, in good condition. The book is interesting, both in the plot and the cultural/historical context in which it was written.

Review Date: 2006-07-06
This book got me up and running in a very short time. It was easy to set up my business of selling recipes and books from my home as I followed along the instructions. In clear, concise language, it spells out the steps you need to do including giving you examples of ads. Not a lot of pages, but each page is packed with straightforward instructions; all you have to do is follow along and you're in business.

Laugh again, cry again
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-16
If you laughed the first time you read one of these, here is your chance to laugh again. If you cried -- no -- not suppose to do that -- but you know what I mean -- then here is your chance to do whatever again. These are a nice selection of those articles Mike wrote to us that he got paid to do for us. This is really home groan stuff!

Oh, and if you are not from Alaska but want to get a ring side seat to what it is like living here, then this is that seat.

Update! And now Mike is one of our most esteemed legislators doing his best in Juneau! The stories that are bound to come out of this should be wonderful reading. I look forward to them Mike!

Don't Miss This!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-02
A fascinating tale about the downfall of a great news agency, and the charlatans and incompetents who ran it into the ground despite the heroics of an outstanding staff of news professionals. The authors are two veteran UPI newsmen who lost their jobs because they would not allow the owners to censor the absolutely true, if ugly and sordid, tale of management incompetence and malfeasance.
