This is a great anthology for anyone teaching (or learning) journalism or even expository writing. Many of the big names in modern journalism are represented: Rick Bragg, Mitch Albom, Patricia Raybon, Francis X. Clines, Thomas French, William Blundell, Cynthia Gorney, Diane Griego Erwin. But there is also a section of "classics," and a first-person account by Marvel Cooke of her day "undercover" as a domestic worker in 1950 is a particularly powerful piece of writing.

Who is Rupert Murdoch and why are so many people saying such nasty things about him? For one thing, his is America's new press lord. He has accumulated power and influence far beyond anything dreamed of when he inherited a modest income and a failing newspaper in Australia.

The first thing you need to understand about A.J.Liebling is this: If youre in the mood for a simple, straight-up story with a beginning, middle, and end you will not appreciate A.J.Liebling. If youre wanting, say, to know what time it is, Liebling will tell you how to make a watch in every detail. He's obsessive in an entertaining way if you have the time for it. And you will learn a lot. And, at times, you will swear the book will never end. But the man could write!
In this book Liebling talks about the newspaper industry, publishers, and the shenanigans publishers-newspapers pull to further their ends. Most of the stories were written in the 40s-50s and compiled in the 60s, but are as true today as they were then. Newspapers ignore the obvious and important, make-up much of what they do report, and lines of advertising sold & circulation is always the bottom-line. News is the last thing any publisher wants to pay for, so they economize by making it up or hire experts to make it up (that is, the expert is here NOT where the news is happening, and provides an opinion of events they know nothing about). Experts dont require expense accounts and costly travel. Liebling cites several events where the press was totally in the fog but had plenty to say; Stalin's death and his replacement are the best example of this phenomenon. And you get a sense of what sort of bums our government leaders are, or were. Liebling spills the beans on some of these people.

This is Farrar's Phd Thesis from VA Tech. The book is about my great grandfather John H. Murphy Sr. He was a former Civil War First Sgt. who fought for his freedom from slavery, serving with Grant & Sherman. With $200 borrowed from his wife, he started the Afro-American Ledger, a merger between two Sunday school teachers. With his five sons, he built the circulation to 200,000 papers a week, nationally and with offices in five cities, Baltimore, Washington, Newark, Richmond and Phila. The campaign led by his son Carl paved the way for Brown vs. Bd. of education. The Afro still publishes today 112 years later in with offices in Baltimore & DC. This is an excellent book and chronicles the Civil Rights struggle beginning after WWI through the pages of the Afro. A must for the black historian.

This is has to be one of the best advertising I have ever seen for an upcoming movie. This is great for anyone who is a fan of Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and looking forward to the upcoming release of The Dark Knight. It is a great read and very amusing. From what I can tell, it just tries to fill you in about what has been going on in Gotham from the close of the first movie to where it will be in The Dark Knight. The quality of the paper is excellent and the pictures are great too. I hope anyone that has it truly enjoys!
Everyone who has been working in these two films has done a great job.

Edited by Nancy Tystad Koupal (editor of the award-winning journal "South Dakota History"), Baum's Road to Oz is a literary tour de force of early writings by celebrated children's author L. Frank Baum, best known for his fantastic imaginary land of Oz. Baum's Road to Oz includes a sampling of Baum's baseball poems, newspaper editorials, and animal fairy tales, and especially apprises Baum's controversial opinions on topics ranging from women's suffrage to spiritualism and the occult to tolerance, contentment, and dishonest trade practices. Koupal and other literary disseminators Mark I. West and Michael Patrick Hearn lend their own insights into Baum's early works, in this enthusiastically recommended volume for college libraries and serious-minded students, scholars, and fans of L. Frank Baum's classics.

I would recommend this book to any genealogist who has ties to Bedford Co. Tennessee; especially during the time period between 1863-1910 as Will Books I & II cover that era. I was greatly impressed with the fact that the book had a full name index as opposed to just being indexed by only the surname. This I'm sure took much time but is one of the most helpful things about a genealogy book as it allows the reader to search with little effort.

THIS BOOK IS BY HAL LEBOVITZ, FORMER SPORTS EDITOR FOR THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER. THIS IS A COLLECTION STORIES AND COLUMNS THAT HE WROTE DURING HIS TENURE AT THE PLAIN DEALER. INCLUDED IS HIS VERY FAMOUS STORY OF "DID YOU EVER CUT A BOY?" AND MANY OTHERS. MOST OF HIS STORIES ARE ABOUT CLEVELAND SPORTS, ALTHOUGH SOME CONCERN NATIONAL STORIES. MOSY OF HIS STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH CHARACTER, INTEGRITY AND THE HUMAN SIDE OF HIS SUBJECTS. I HAVE A VERY HIGH REGARD FOR HAL AND ENJOYED HIS COLUMNS FOR MANY YEARS. I WAS RECENTLY VERY STUNNED AND SAD WHEN I READ OF HIS RECENT DEATH. HAL WROTE OF CHARACTER, VALUES AND MORALS AND HIS LIFE REFLECTED THAT. HIS STORIES WERE VERY REFRESHING. THE SELF CENTERED AND GREEDY ATHLETES OF TODAY SHOULD READ THIS. I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS FOR EVERY SPORTS FAN.

When I last went to Africa, to teach journalism, I brought this book along to provide inspiration to me and my students. It works. Because it provides the best in news design from around the world, readers can get a broad overview of the state of newspaper design with this volume.
