Original and imaginative: We love this book!

I'm a collector of great children's books, and I was delighted to find this one: it's fresh, imaginative and just-plain-fun. I've started reading it to my three-month-old so that Hesselberg's stories are the ones she grows up on -- a big improvement over Cinderella and the Three Little Pigs! I've passed along the title to one of my faculty colleagues, who has written a book about children's literature: she loved it, too. It's a big hit -- with my infant daughter and her grown-up mommy.

As a elementary school teacher, I use this book all the time for great read aloud stories which never fail to light up eyes and get laughs from my students. Sometimes the story is a prompt for them to write their own tales. Kids are tough audiences and often the books that garner the acclaim of the adult critics bomb with the intended audience. These stories past the test in the classroom week after week.

Spiked, immensely important and fascinating -- A must read!

Review Date: 2003-08-15
This book is more timely today than when it first appeared. I cannot say it better than reviewers of the time:
"...Kreig deserves a place on the required reading list of any ethics class ... The book offers enough specific examples to stimulate class analysis for several semesters." (Journalism Quarterly)
"Anyone who has been a reporter will recognize the characters in this compelling book, whether or not they've worked for a chain. The arrogance, pretentiousness and downright cowardice so common to newspaper management appear here in bold relief." (John R. MacArthur, Publisher, Harper's Magazine)
"....a pretty chilling tale...very well reported." (Jonathan Alter, Senior Editor, Newsweek)
"...beg, borrow, buy or steal a copy of Spiked." (Willimantic Chronicle).
I agree! A must read!

Spiked Analysis of the Newspaper Industry

Review Date: 2001-12-18
Spiked provides an insider's account of the economics and politics that shape the newspaper industry -- excessive bending for profits, prizes and pacification. As indicated by the overwhelmingly positive response to this important book, this continues to be an enduring analysis of the most important trends in the news business, affecting the forces at work that shape our democracy.

Very wry, very funny, and very educational, this tabloid newspaper-style book follows the story of early man from the missing link to about 3,000 B.C. Great fun for adults as well as children. Highly recommended.

An educational and very funny read. The facts are all true, but have been presented in a consistely funny and readable tabloid style. Maps, pictures, and fact boxes (and some very funny ads) support the text. Highly recommended.

Surfs up Geronimo is an awesome book!! The main character is Geronimo Stilton. He is a Mouse!!!
The author if the book is Geronimo Stilton. The book is fantasy.
Geronimo Stilton (the mouse) is the main character. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure books! The book is like the Magic Tree House books because they are really adventurous.
If you want to see where Geronimo Stilton goes on vacation and what he does on vacation you have to read the book.
If you decide to read the book I hope you like it!!! If you really like the book then you should read the whole series!!! (There are a bunch of them)

I would buy this book not once, not twice, but over and over again simply for the satisfaction of owning something so worthwhile and fascinating. Highly recommended for your bookshelf and anyone else's. Tell a friend!

Like most Americans, you and I have already devoted countless hours absorbing the latest reports about high-profile legal cases. A short list reminds us of the time we have spent: O. J., JonBenet, Rodney King, Lorena Bobitt, Monica Lewinsky, and the British nanny Louise Woodward. In the 1990s, these and other judicial soap operas have become a mainstay of mainstream television, newspapers, and magazines. These "dramas" are the lifeblood of the newer cable and Internet "news" media. These cases have so worked their way into our collective consciousness that the mere mention of one can easily evoke (and provoke!) a long and far-ranging discussion.

In their new book TABLOID JUSTICE: CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AN AGE OF MEDIA FRENZY, Richard Fox and Robert Van Sickel have dissected how the increasingly entertainment-oriented news media have covered such high-profile legal cases. The authors show how growing familiarity with celebrity criminal cases has distorted our understanding of the U. S. legal system and undercut our confidence in law enforcement, attorneys, judges, and the jury system.

TABLOID JUSTICE offers a concise introduction to this important subject. It is richly documented without being pedantic. It is a wonderful text for college-level courses in Law and Society or Mass Communications. Students will find its argument compelling. Faculty will appreciate its value as a catalyst for class discussions about the impact of the media on our legal system.

Soon a new "trial of the century" will come our way. Fox and Van Sickel want all of us to be better prepared when it does.

Begin with Puppetmasters if you suspect that al Qaeda must have had help to accomplish the Sept. 11 attacks and seek examples of how U.S. intelligence agencies have manipulated terrorists.

Throughout the 70's and halfway into the 80's, the United States and right-wing factions within Italy conducted a war of terror in the name of Communism that was designed to arouse public sentiment against the Italian Communist Party. Willan documents that they did it, and how. In doing so, Puppetmasters, which was first published in 1991, reveals to the contemporary reader the ease with which the same tactics could have been used in September 2001 in order to mobilize political support for a weak U.S. president, a right-wing social agenda, and military adventures into far away lands.

The Italian experience with terrorism was astonishingly similar to what we have experienced since Sept. 11. Authorities on the peninsula found themselves blocked and hindered in their efforts to stop terrorism and then to convict terrorists once apprehended. Similarly, the failure to apprehend any accomplices to the Sept. 11 terrorists, the lack of progress on finding those who mailed anthrax letters to congress and the media, and the persistent failure to catch a sniper who terrorized the nation's political capital at the height of the 2002 congressional elections, all raise suspicions that we're not getting to the truth about the War on Terrorism. Puppetmasters may present part of the answer.

Although it details the "years of lead" during which Italy suffered through thousands of terror attacks, the book clearly has important lessons for today. It is an excellent starting point for those wishing to understand how al Qaeda could be receiving assistance from those in government to accomplish their far-flung plots.

A deadly strategy of tension
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-30
Philip Willan analyzes remarkably and profoundly the violent activities of left- and right-wing terrorist groups in Italy in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
He unveils a monster conspiracy between the Italian secret services, the CIA, the FBI, NATO (Gladio netword), the Mafia, the Catholic Church, conservative Italian politicians and freemasonry against the left.
They created a strategy of tension designed to prevent the Italian communist party from taking power or to become a government partner (Italy was a key NATO member).

One of the main means in this strategy was the infiltration of extreme left-wing movements. After the leaders of the Red Brigades were put in prison, the movement became totally controlled by governmental intelligence services. Bombings with indiscriminate killings of innocent civilian were blamed on the left in order to discredit left-wing parties, create fear among the population and concomitantly support the right-wing parties.
The most blatant sign of the collusion of the different players involved was the kidnapping and the murder of the Italian politician Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades. Also Moro tried to forge a center-left government with the communists.
A key player in the strategy of fear was the infamous freemason lodge P2 and its venerable Master Licio Gelli, who attended as an honorary guest the inaugural ceremonies of the presidents Ford, Carter and Reagan. He was also implicated in the Lockheed bribery scandal.
The author states that American lodges were set up for every NATO base.

The main culprits in the deadly strategy were the Italian secret services. But, as the author rightly states, `they needed the endorsement of NATO and NATO's most powerful member. He stresses the 'ignoble' role of the US government: `the responsibility of what happened as a result of the strategy of tension rests with the US.'
Ultimately, this book shows the limited sovereignty of a NATO member State, which in fact was run by its secret services. The US even concocted to install a `Greek colonels regime' in Italy.

This depressing story of (in)discrimate killings and a vast number of mysterious deaths is extremely revealing for the kind of democracy we live in: `if you don't vote as we like, you will pay the price.'

This book is a must read for all supporters of real democracy.

better than The Onion books?

I read a lot of contemporary humor. The good thing about this book is that you can laugh at the wacky headlines and then learn that many of them are based on true stories in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and so on, which kind of makes you go hmmm... And the explanations/answers usually run one or two paragraphs and are funny too, so you get your money's worth. Is Truth Or Tabloid? better than an Onion book? I say yes, if for no other reason than this book was written by one guy and the Onion stuff takes 20 or 30 people to put together (just look at the inside title page). This is humor for the media-obsessed!

This is a good book to take to parties or your local watering hole. The challenge is to guess which bizarre tabloid headlines are based on true stories from mainstream publications and which are based on the writer's fantasies. I played for beers at one bar and didn't have to pay for a Bud all night. Almost. Of course, if you don't imbibe spirits you can play for Diet Sprite or Ultra Slim Fast. Some of my favorite headlines are:
"Roger Ebert Wills Smithsonian His Thumbs"
"Laughter Is A Laxative"
"Irate Dad Chains Belly-Dancing Son To Bed"
"Homeless Applaud Politically Correct Garbage Cans"
I guess it would be considered a spoiler if I said which of those were truth and which were tabloid.

Embarking on a new journey, to a new place can be dangerous especially when Jennifer DeSpain travels to Black Hawk, Colorado with her family and friends. Packing and selling everything was easy to do but getting there would be twice the fun. Suddenly when the train comes to a complete stop and is robbed, 'The Kissing Bandit' gets both their money and a kiss.

When they arrive in a nearby town they have no money until an unusual person saves the day. They finally arrive in Black Hawk and Jennifer realizes they can't keep the building they bought so she has to sell it and rent one. Soon Jason gets everything they need to get the first edition of the Advertiser published. Jason has to deliver the papers by horse and when he's taking the second edition around he has an accident on his horse. Jason is stubborn and not easy to talk while he's bedridden.

While Jason is stuck in bed, two men enter Jennifer's life. One, Lance Rivers, is there for Jennifer's love and the other, the Preacher, is a comfort for her soul. Jennifer tries to work the stubborn press but Jason was the only one who really figured it out. Soon Jason comes around and meets Lance and thinks he's a crafty character. While Jennifer and the kids take a vacation, Jason gets the scoop of a lifetime and makes the newspaper a lot of money.

Things change and so do people. Jennifer's heart changes its mind a few times. Tragedy strikes yet again, challenging Jennifer and her family once again.

I loved this book! The beginning starts out kind've slow but soon the plot thickens. The plot slows down a bit but then towards the end of the book the authors finally let us know who the 'Kissing Bandit' really is.

For the same reasons I love USA TODAY, I love the USA TODAY sudoku book. It's straighforward, clean and concise and has 5 levels of difficulty, just like the USA TODAY Sudoku in the USA TODAY newspaper, on usatoday.com and on USA TODAY Sudoku mobile (through Verizon, Cingular and T-mobile). It definitely stands out among the many sudoku books out there.
