This book is funny because of the plot, especially the middle part of the story. The most funny part is that part of Teacher Bob dating. But there are a lot of other moments I can't recall, but the authors really did a good job on this book.

A wonderful book! It makes you laugh, cry, smile, and you'll want to read it over and over! The small town stories included in the book make you feel like you are from the same town and like you've known the authors your entire life. (A Mention of Patty Loveless is also never a bad thing in any book!) Wonderful book that I enjoy reading often.

This heartfelt collection of essays and articles tells some familiar life stories. Poignant at times and funny as can be at others, I was very pleased that the quality of writing matched the quality of life the book describes.

Loved The Bottlewasher! Reminded me of my own youth in the midwest in the 50's. It was fun to relate to the characters, and reminisce about days gone by. Besides being well written, Kay Reilly had a lot to say!
A welcome mix of history, memory, and sharped-tongued humor.

The Bottlewasher: Selections From A Small-town Newspaper Column Of The Early 1950's by the late Gretta H. Trainer is a collection of weekly small-town newspaper columns written by a homemaker in 1951-1955 - a time when few mothers also had the opportunity to work, let alone write. Filled with wisdom, anecdotes, wistful and not-so-wistful glimpses at American life half a century ago, and aptly compiled and edited by Trainer's daughter, Kay T. Reilly, The Bottlewasher is an engaging, highly recommended read filled with history, memory, and sharp-tongued humor.

It's summer vacation and Wally dreams of days away from school and his neighbor nemesis Caroline - but he gets roped into helping his brothers on a summer newspaper project which involves him with both Caroline and a mystery. Amid scraps and funny mishaps the Hatford boys and Malloy girls put together their own paper and even work on their own big scoop in yet another funny 'Girls Against the Boys' series addition by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Boys Rock!, which requires no prior familiarity to prove fun.

The story of two stray dogs who roamed San Francisco's urban streets in the 1860s is a classic which has been embellished over the years, and Bummer & Lazarus provides a new, expanded version of the author's 1984 publication which unravels legend and presents explanations for how and why the embellishments on the stories occurred. News stories, photos and a new introduction enhance this fun survey.
An excellent book! Easy to read, and very descriptive!

This book is great, if you love fun historical anecdotes about the old days in San Francisco. This book brings alive, through old newspaper accounts and great narration - the exploits of two of San Francisco's favorite dogs, Bummer and Lazarus. Noone owned them, they just roamed around old gold-rush era San Francisco, getting handouts from people at the rowdy saloons. But people loved these dogs, as they displayed very loyal bonds to one another, and their antics always made the newspaper columns. Highly recommended!

This book was simply entertaining! I enjoyed reading it and it reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones humor. Not sure that I've ever chuckled out loud while reading before (perhaps that says more about me or my reading list), however this book did it. I'm already looking forward to Ally's next clever book. You'll read this book and pass it on to a friend. It's that good.

If you are into Civil War history, this is the ultimate source! Countless books have been written on the ironies and tradgedies of America's Civil War, but in these collections, the happenings of the day come alive.
Just reading the first newspaper, you will be transported back in time. Into the homes, Churches, courtrooms, schools and meeting houses you will become a part of history. No book written today can do justice to information straight from the source. Within these covers the event is not just a story but a true-to-life experience!
This is a MUST for Civil War enthusiasts at any level.

I have read this book and it is so great to be able to read the accountings of the War for Southern Independence from newspapers around the country during this time in our country's history. In today's times of political correctness, events which happened during the War are either left out of books or the history is rewritten to suit the author's perception of what happened. That is not the case with this book. It's history as it happened. Of course many articles are biased toward the North and South, but that's how newspapers are and always will be...biased in one way or another. The articles, the maps, even the advertisements printed were most informative and educational. This book was very good reading and was hard to put down. I would recommend this book to anybody, and would even recommend it as extra reading for history classes in schools. Mr. Caren collected and held on to many great sources for future generations to insure what happened during these years will never be forgotten.

There is no better source than the CLMP for publishing literary work. I have used it since 2001. The information is accurate and up to date, and every serious writer should own a copy, a new copy, each year.
I highly recommend this book.

This Directory is a great resource for any serious creative writer - certainly it's a great addition to this poet's reference shelf. It presents listings for LITERARY publications, weeding out commercial places that prefer rhyming jingles to sestinas so my time isn't wasted pawing through pages of inappropriate nonsense. Good information including how each publication is distributed and when the reading periods are is very helpful. I also find the various indices useful for finding information quickly. The online journals also listed in the Directory are another great resource... highly recommended!

I got this book because I'm starting up a local newspaper and it's been 30 some odd years since I majored in Journlaism. I found here a lot of what I only dimmly remembered, but which underscored what I believed about the feasibility of starting my paper. I also can see that it would be a good read for anyone nostalgic for the simpler days of newspapering.
