I really like the movie "Newsies" that was made in 1992, so when I found this book at our library, I just had to read it. The only thing bad about this book, is that it doesn't have alot of stuff about the strike. The entrees were only 2 paragraphs long. Other than that I think it was a great book. I like Racetrack, Being that he is my favorite in the movie, and in this book, he's not much differant. he's still a smart alac in the book.

News in the making.

"The Journal of Finn Reardon: A Newsie" was a very interesting book. I'm sure you've either heard of your father or grandfather selling newspapers on the street corner. My father did, so this story brought back the stories he used to tell me as a child. Today, the newspaper is delivered to your front doorstep, or you can buy it at stands or supermarkets. In the early 20th century, you relied on tween and teen boys to get your daily dose of news, and this "My America" book explains the daily lives of these boys. Times were most certainly different, since you could let a 12-year-old work a street corner until dark, without any immediate worries. Each day was a struggle, and the money a family made was used immediately on that day; and to think that the Great Depression hadn't hit yet. If you're interested in journalism and newspapers, then this story is an interesting one. I recommend.

Great... interesting time period...

Yet another great My Name Is America book has been published. This one, The Journal of Finn Reardon, take place in 1899 New York. Finn lives with his family in a crowded flat in New York's notorious Lower East Side. In addition to dealing with school, Finn is a newsie. A newsie was the most popular occupation for teen age boys then. Let the author take you on a journey as you learn about Finn's life including gangs, the strike, and his unique friends. You'll really enjoy this book.

This truely is a book that can be read over and over again. The tale of a young man's struggle to fit in at a new school, make new friends and find life after football will keep you intrigued through the whole story. Not a dull moment, and the story line is well thought out and described perfectly. Mr. Malmgren is a wonderful novelist, and is definetely in touch with the complexity of being a teen, and the yurning to find one's self.

No Ordinary Joe: A Life Of Joseph Pulitzer III provides a very fine scholarly biographical survey of the man who created the widely known Pulitzer Prize. Joseph was trained for succession to the Pulitzer media empire and worked hard to maintain his family's paper's liberal philosophy even as competitors began mixing news with entertainment. His many achievements in the newspaper world are detailed alongside interviews with over seventy who knew or worked with him: the result is a study spiced with personal insight and celebrating Pulitzer's impact on the publishing world as a whole.

The Story of a Business Icon

Review Date: 2006-03-04
As you watch the national news it is easy to see how the national organizations have blurred news and entertainment. Any attempt on their part to present all sides of a complex story disappears if they can find a blown up vehicle or an injured person. Politicans have learned that the few second sound byte has to convey the message they want or the message isn't getting on the air at all.

Further, there are only a handfull of newspapers that attempt to provide a full story. During the reign of Joseph Pulitzer III, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was one of that handfull. Politically liberal, the paper prospered during the years that other newspapers were failing, merging or converting to tabloid style.

This biography of Joseph Pulitzer III covers his life, but his life was never far removed from the newspaper. This book presents the story of a man not seen so often. Trained by his father from birth to run the paper he had the problems of employees not liking his style, of friction within the rest of the family, and more. It is a fascinating story, well researched, and well told.

Am I the only one who actually has read this?

So the first review is by a guy who has never read the book and the second one is by the author himself, who has obviously never actually read the book either. Besides, if what he says is true he has 20 copies in his basement he is still trying to give away. I've known Seabury for over THIRTY years (not a mere 20) so I was suckered in to actually PAY for the book, and thus Seabury gets himself less than a $1.00 sterling to spend on something useful. I would suggest a new ribbon for his typewriter. Oh, wait! I'm sorry. Actually Seabury paid a grand to have the book published, therefore if he sells another thousand copies, he'll break even! I'm just happy to have done my part. Only 999 copies to go.

Actually, I'm a fan. In fact, in the great American Novel I'm about to write, Seabury Blair, Jr. is going to be a character--just like Elliott Swanson. Those names are just so cool even if the people inhabiting them are sixties left-overs. Now Seabury claims to be a Dave Berry wannabe; I think he's right up there as an Ourdoors Dave Berry, except Dave Berry has two sets of pillows on his bed and never goes outside. So, really, Seabury is the Dave Berry of the Great Northwest. And he will tell you the truth, too, such as the fact that Gore-Tex(r) is a rip off and doesn't work and the undeniable fact that it rains here a lot. Duh. What I'd really like to know, though, is who is B.B. Hardbody, really? May we have a picture, please?

So. Dude. You me an autograph.

What an incredible writer

I haven't yet read the book but I've known and read Seabury for almost 20 years. As my editor for many years Seabury time and again proved what an incredible writer he is. His wit and humor is only equaled by the great Patrick McManus. Blair weaves his way through a story without wasting a single word and involves his readers to paint mental pictures as the story unfolds without knowing you're doing it. His writing is that powerful. I can't wait to get my hands on one. I'm sure it will be a must-read.

Listen: I wrote the book, so you might expect I'd give it 5 stars.
I just thought you'd like to know what it's about. So ...
Here's a book guaranteed to "perk" up your morning coffee break, proving that tall tales can be short. Learn to distinguish a terrorist from a mother and her baby, or how to do the beer curl to get in shape for football season. Meet Stummick, who does nothing but hang out all day, and B.B. Hardbody, a woman of great wisdom and beauty (who would gleefully strangle the author if he wrote anything else). Shake hands with characters like Grizzly Hemingway, a fly fisher who says beer coolers bounce because ale is made with hops. Each story will put a smile on your face and get you through the rest of the day - no matter what kind of geek your boss is.

This is a down to earth book about a family that feels as real as any family in a small town. It is funny and sweet, with just enough suspense and crisis to keep it interesting. I recommend reading the other books in the series, Scent of Lilacs and Orchard of Hope, but you could read this book without reading the others first, because it stands alone as a story all its own. Ann H. Gabhart is a writer that knows how real people think and feel. This is just a delightful book.

A small Kentucky town on the verge of joy may collapse into the verge of chaos. "Summer of Joy" is the story of David Brooke, a man trying to find the courage to pop the question to his longtime lover, and his small Kentuckian hometown. The past is returning to bite David in the rear, drama and chaos coming with it in this deftly written and intriguing story by accomplished author Ann. H. Gabhart. Highly recommended to fiction and romance shelves everywhere.

Ann is a wonderful author and all of her books are good reading. If you have read the first two series you will definitely want to read this one as well.

The Bible as you've never seen it before
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-29
The Tabloid Bible is exactly what it says on the tin: the stories of the Bible presented in tabloid format. I encountered this book in a study session on the Tower of Babel. "TOWERING CONFUSION" yells the headline. "Tower of Babel Crashes; Project Ends In Chaos":The Tower of Babel project has collapsed due to what the management team called "an unprecedented communication breakdown."And so on, until:The project was finally abandoned yesterday after a statement by the managing director at a packed shareholders meeting.

"Xxyshhibbothuth mi varg," he said.

No translation was available. At the bottom of the page is an advert: Luxury apartments and houses in the rural paradise of Sodom and Gomorrah. 4 and 5 bedroom homes available. Luxury fitted kitchens, jacuzzis, and those "fun" rooms for all manner of "adult" entertainment. [...]

Sodom and Gomorrah--Building a Better Class of Home in the Gutter....And you know what the headline on the next page is going to be, don't you...

The Tabloid Bible is pure, unmitigated fun: "JESUS FEEDS FIVE THOUSAND" runs a headline quoted on the back cover; "'He Cut The Bread Very Thin,' Claim Skeptics." The book captures the essence of each Bible story in no more than a page and a half. Whilst it pokes fun at its source material, projecting twentieth century culture willy-nilly back onto the Biblical stories, and shows the typical partisanship of tabloid newspapers--sometimes in favour of the Biblical characters, sometimes against them--it is never disrespectful to the Bible or Judaism and Christianity. Indeed, Biblical text is often sneaked in in quotations attributed to people on the scene of each story. My one, small, criticism is that occasionally the text seems a bit immature.

This book is ideal for everyone from teenagers in need of a way to relate to the Bible, to people like me who know most of the stories back-to-front anyway.

This edition is a bit of an odd bird: the original edition is British, and whilst the text has undergone a surface-level Americanisation--USAn spelling introduce, along with references to "mom" and "bowl" championships--it remains riddled with references USAn readers might not get, for example to the Millennium Dome.

In summary: highly recommended, but if you don't want to take my word for it, have a preview of its content. :o)

Attacks tabloid folly without demeaning the source material.

I read the original British version of this while preparing to interview Nick Page for "The Door," a religious satire magazine. This is a wonderful, funny book -- but Page is careful to make fun of tabloid attitudes and stupidity, not the Bible stories themselves. Not to be missed.

This is a delightful overview of the Bible full of outrageous humor. The headlines are insightful, interesting and fun. A less irreverent but equally enjoyable supplement to this book is THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. Numerous characters from throughout the Bible are pointed out who illustrate King Solomon's witty observations on human nature. Many of the riddles and mysteries of Proverbs are explored with surprising new answers. Proverbs are a treasury of God's wisdom and give practical applications of Biblical values in punchy memorable sayings.

Covers stuff not in AP Style Guide, good grammar resource

The first edition of this book was required reading for a graduate level writing/editing class I took at Northwestern. I loved the book so much that I ordered the second edition after it came out-- even though I'm done with school. This REALLY helped me learn some of the most pesky writing, editing and grammar rules I could never quite get right. I am not a trained journalist, but I am a working writer. This guide includes simple quizzes and easy-to-understand lessons. I've got the Chicago Manual of Style, the AP Stylebook, Strunk & White and many other guides, but Watch Your Words does a better job of explaining a lot of things not adequately covered in those biggies. My professor at the time described it as a guide written to fill in the gaps for the AP Stylebook, and it does just that. If you're new to journalism, PR, marketing communications or corporate writing, this is a must read. Even if you're seasoned like me, this book is a truly valuable brush-up tool. I highly recommend it.

A journalist's guide to developing language skills

Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (10/07)

"Watch Your Words" is a language-skills guidebook designed specifically for the journalist. Marda Dunsky provides a manual that serves as a baseline for language skills knowledge for the journalist. The handbook is also a compact, quick and accessible resource for the classroom or the newsroom. It is consistent with "The Associated Press Stylebook."

Dunsky includes rules and guidelines for punctuation, and basic terms and concepts of grammar. She also introduces rules, guidelines, and tips for detecting common errors in word usage. I found the exercises stimulating, helpful and entertaining. I received great satisfaction when I recognized terms, concepts and styles, and when I chose the right selection or answer on the self-test. The exercises are designed to help the journalist to insure the words chosen, the grammar used and the punctuation are accurate, clear and consistent.

The "Associated Press Stylebook" study guide and self tests were especially helpful and add to the importance of the book as a resource for frequent future reference. The spelling helps with common homonyms and spelltraps are invaluable as an additional ready reference guide.

Marda Dunsky is well qualified to author this handbook. She has been teaching editing and international journalism courses at Northwestern University for over ten years. Marda conducts editing seminars and presentations, has served as an editor at the Chicago Tribune, and as an Arab-affairs reporter for the Jerusalem Post.

"Watch Your Words" is a masterful language-skills handbook for the journalist. This is a book that should be on the on the reference shelf of every serious journalist. It should be included on the reading list of English, speech and communications classes at the college and university level -- an important resource tool.

EVERYONE should have this book!

This textbook is owned by every student in the journalism school where the two authors teach, which is where I first picked up this book. I've been working in PR for the last four years and have it sitting on my desk for reference whenever I want to know the proper use of underway vs. under way or bad vs. badly or some other frequently misused words and punctuation.

This book changed my life! I took a class in college from tbe author and this was the textbook. I have been in advertising and marketing for the past 12 years and I use this book all the time. It's so easy to use and the info is really clear.

The best part is a guide at tbe back that explains the distinctions between commonly misused words. For Example: farther/further (farther--physical distance-throw the ball farther and further --degree,time or quanity - discuss the issue further); since/because (since -- denotes a period of time -it's been many years since we've been together and because gives a reason or cause); irregardless(isn't a word) etc. I recommend this book to everyone--it's great.

This guide wittily walks its readers through the rules of English grammar, breaks down every principle, identifies the most common mistakes among writers and gives excellent insight on how to fix these errors. The last 37 pages (the Topical Guide to Grammar and Word Use) simply list every misconception or fallacy regarding word and punctuation misuse and give quick explanations on how to correct these frequent blunders. This book is an absolutely must for any undergraduate student and I recommend it to even the most professional grammarians. It should be considered beginner grammarians' Bible.

This book is a must for all writers for trade publications and those who want to write for trade pubs.

In Writing For Trade Magazines: How To Boost Your Income By $200 To $500 Per Week, veteran trade editor and professional writer Kendall Hanson provides detailed information on how to research, query, and write articles that will sell to the trade magazine industry. Hanson's advice is practical, thorough, and "writer friendly". Writing For Trade Magazines emphasizes that good trade writers don't need to be trained in journalism or hold English Lit degrees, what they do need is to make effective contacts with potential publication clients and write interesting pieces for trade magazines. Writing For Trade Magazines is "must" reading for any aspiring author seeking to make sales to magazines, periodicals and journals, and holds a great deal of sound and valued information for even experienced professionals on enhancing and maximizing their sales and cash flow.
