For any Yankees fanatic, this is a first-rate compendium of all things Yankee, and is interesting and entertaining even if you're a Red Sox fan. My copy, purchased for a gift, came on time and wrapped to endure any major disaster, but the jacket was slightly ripped and the cover dented. Fortunately, the recipient didn't mind.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a co-worker that loves baseball. He really liked the book as he had attended many games at Yankee Stadium in the past. The photos in the book are amazing and I think it is a good item of memorabilia for those who love the game.

EVEN IF YOU HATED THE YANKS, YOU HAD TO LOVE THEIR PARK

Review Date: 2009-02-09

At this point, I've read enough of Harvey Frommer's books to anticipate the excellent history and writing that is to be found in this one. But what I wasn't prepared for is just how beautiful the design of the book is; the bounty of photographs of the park, players, and action; and the images of memorabilia--like ticket stubs and posters--scattered throughout. If you're a Yankee fan or have read much about them, there won't necessarily be a lot that's new to you here, but you can't be enough of a fanatic to know all the great anecdotes and the oral histories from players and others with memories of and ties to the Stadium are wonderful. What seals the deal though is the visual experience and, since we soon won't have the park itself to refer to anymore, that makes this book a must have.

Just as everyone has their own special memory of The Stadium, in such a rich collection of stories and pictures, everyone is likely to find their own favorite tidbit. Here's mine. In the middle of Mr. Frommer's discussion of Babe Ruth's record 60 homerun season of 1927, we come upon a list of the pitchers off of whom he went yard that year. A simple enough thing you think, eh? But check out these names: Sloppy Thurston (3 times!), Rube Walberg (4 times!), Rip Collins, Garland Buckeye (twice on June 11th), Hal Wiltse, Slim Harriss, Hod Lisenbee, Lefty Stewart, Sarge Connally, Milt Gaston, Willis Hudlin, Lefty Grove... If a fiction writer used all those magnificent monikers in a baseball novel you'd criticize him for going over the top. Make room on your coffee table, because you'll want to keep this beauty there.

Really, A Most Amazing Workbook!

Review Date: 2008-09-02
Well, in the interest of "full disclosure," I'll tell you that I have been using this book as a workbook to teach the ReSurfacing workshop for about 4 years. It is one of the most profound books of awakening out there, and generally available.

The book is carefully designed so that if you want to, you can do the workbook yourself. And you will have good results, I imagine, as long as you really do the exercises (isn't that what they always say!), and follow the instructions. It is also designed to be the workbook for a two-day ReSurfacing workshop, and we do them all throughout the country. For more information, check out [...]

Kinds of results you can expect from doing this work are so numerous it's hard to outline them all. They would include: An increase in enthusiasm. A clarity and sense of purpose around life goals and meaning in life. More energy. More calm. A sense of presence.

The list really does go - as they say - on and on and on! Suffice to say, this workbook is the gateway into the full Avatar Course, and that is one of the most profound experiences you are likely to have in your entire life.

Remarkably useful book. Rarely does a day go by when i don't use these tools to improve the quality of my life. In minutes I can go from feeling stuck to having loads of free attention and appreciation. Imagine a course like this offered as part of our education, as children and adults.

Highly overrated

Yes, be sure to buy this book here at Amazon instead of paying $295 for it at a Resurfacing workshop, as I did. A so-called Avatar Master won't give you much in the sense of additional explanation or clarification. Most of them are too busy checking if you followed the exercises (some of which are in(s)ane frankly) to the letter.

Noticed the lingo in the other reviews? That's the key. Use a complicated gibberish that no-one really understands the meaning of to confuse people.

Oh, and if you did Scientology, you might recognize one or two exercises.

As an Avatar Master, I have used the ReSurfacing book over and over again in the past six years, both personally and with students. The results are always fast and effective. The exercises are seemingly simple, yet can produce such profound, deep and lasting results. This book is a treasure that you can refer to each day to clear away whatever feels like it's in the way. The exercises can be done solo or with a guide. This book and Harry Palmer's Living Deliberately book are the foundation of Avatar. This book is a beautiful gift to humanity.

So simple, so powerful

The old wisdom that says the simplest answer is the best is proven once again by this book. The exercises here may look simple at first reading but actually doing them and spending time taking them to depth produces amazing results.

I'm reminded of the value of practicing scales for building professional musical skills. Rather than providing esoteric or mystical instructions, Harry Palmer provides practical exercises that empower you to take control of your life.

I've used the exercises in this book over several years and still find them more effective than anything else I've tried.

The thing I like about this book is that it ranges from basics to advanced development strategizing. It seems to have been developed for use by individuals as well as in a (relaxed, hip?) classroom situation. I read it on my own, but can imagine it's structure making the teacher's job easy. As an "international reader," I think this book offers good insights into the workings of the U.S. corporate web economy... valuable when thinking about new directions for developing websites in one's own country.

Good book on design process, not web design

Review Date: 2003-10-23
I'm working on a re=design of a non-profit site and had expected this book (based on the title) to give me some real-world design advice. Instead, the book focuses on the design PROCESS itself. Things like knowing who your users / customers are and what they need from your site, getting buy-in from the site owners, prototyping, testing, etc. And even then the amount of real "take-away" information is scant (in my opinion). I had used another book (The Design of Sites - highly recommend) and must have bookmarked (the old fashioned way) 100 or more pages. On Ms. Phyo's book I found only 6 pages to be valuable (to me). If you're in the market to set up a web design team or business, this is a good book. If you're looking for decent web design help, look elsewhere. My 2-cents.

Smart!

I'm no expert on Web design. However, I do spend a great deal of time fiddling with badly desined web sites. Certainly everyone has encountered a web site that made them want to scream.

I do understand what is involved in building a web site, we build them regularly. Ani Phyo is very intuitive and approaches her subject matter with great finessse. I have interacted with sites that she and her partner have designed and clearly, they get it. Not only are the sites intuitive and smart but they take it to the next level. They have an organic nature that transcends what you'd expect on the web. Their sites are breathing, living organisms. To encounter them is to be a part of a community. Yes, a community! Isn't that what the Internet is all about?

I highly recommend this book mostly for the client. The client needs to define their needs and comprehend what is possible. The designer can take it to the next level.

Finally, someone has written the book that describes the best way to think about designing interactive media. As a professional web designer/architect, I've found Ani really nails it in terms of process, and will help me cover my bases better. I recommend this book for beginners, who can now start out right the first time. And for veteran web people, this is a comprehensive, clear document of the methodology you might have been using for years, but may have cut corners on. My copy is going to have lots of dog-ears...

Just-in-Time Design for Web Applications

Review Date: 2003-06-18
If you ever wanted a 7-step recipe for designing applications for Web delivery, this is the book for you. I appreciate the time and money I am saving on my current Web project by following a tested process that really works.
Regardless if you are responsible for site management, defining system requirements, Web content development, visual design, back-end programming, or usability testing of Web-delivered applications, following this process is both cost effective and fun. Return on Design is a gourmet meal consisting of step-by-step procedures, supportive examples, visuals, resources, and a consistent information design approach, which all serve to differentiate this Web design book from the others.
The bottom line is: do you want your site to be revenue generating? Your chances for success are better if you follow a user-centered design "recipe" for success.

A L'Mour Classic

I have read all of the Sackett novels and most everything else that L'Amour has written. I would easily list this book as one of my top 3 favorites by the author. It's a different path for L'Amour, writing 1st person as a 16 year old girl. That being said, he was truly a gifted storyteller and this is one good book. I would highly recommend it, not only for young girls to read, but for anyone else who's looking for for a good story on the American West.

On a side note, I think this would be a great opportunity for a made for TV movie.

This one is, in my opinion, probably the weakest Sackett story so far. I admitt I am new to Louis Lamour (relatively). I have read 9 of his books so far and I enjoy them very much and continue to read more. The Sackett series are a special lot but I was not overly excited about this particular one. It is worth reading, I guess, like any other Louis Lamour, but I would put this one off because there are many more exciting ones than this.
Still a Lamour fan

Louis L'Amour writes like a girl, and when he's telling the story of 16-year-old Echo Sackett, that's an excellent thing to do. Echo leaves her mountain home in 1840 to claim an unexpected inheritance in the City of Philadelphia, and the story is principally about her efforts to outwit and outfight the criminals who want to make sure she doesn't get back to the mountains with what is rightfully hers.

Echo, every inch the lady, has spunk and smarts enough to go with the knife she calls her "Arkansas Toothpick." Being a Sackett, she also has a lively sense of her family history. As in most L'Amour books, the Sackett ethos -- help your kin at any cost -- is on full display here. I also enjoyed the book because it includes a free black man and a gallant city boy, not to mention serious villains. Their adventures, and reactions to them, are true to the time and place of which they're part.

It's also worth noting that the moral code that suffuses this book -- the idea that doing good deeds is like scattering bread on the water -- is L'Amour's version of what author Catherine Ryan Hyde would famously call "Pay it Forward" many years later.

In short, on the river or off of it, Echo Sackett is good company, and not just another pretty face. She reminds me of a family friend who ignored the unspoken navy blue dress code to interview for an elementary school teaching job wearing a lime-green skirt and matching Eisenhower jacket. You'll enjoy this story even if you haven't had the good fortune of knowing a young woman of such character.

Fifth of the series. Strong female character

Echo Sackett is one of the few women mentioned of the family. She is young, but she is a better shot than her brothers. Echo is also a strong female character who still aspires to be ladylike and not masculized.

But she still knows to "expect Higginses" when she finds she is due an inheritance and travels alone to retrieve it. Fortunately, being a woman is an advantage in a world of men who will underestimate her abilities.

I admire L'Amour for writing such a strong, young female character. Girls may become interested in reading westerns after their introduction to Echo Sackett.

Enjoy a great drama while learning history

Review Date: 2000-10-20
When I came across River of Souls, I thought, sure, another shoot 'em up instead of car crashes. Blum proved me wrong. His characters came alive in my mind and I began to care about each one. Of course, that Black Demon character felt more like a rattle snake slithering through the open door making me want to pick up my feet. The shifting scenes reminded me of what I knew of the gold fields but gave me so much more of the drama. If only the history text books could be so intense, I wouldn't be learning afresh now at my age. A robust romp through the Southwest that kept me turning the pages.

A gripping story that creates an American West of its own
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-30
As readers, we expect many things from a good piece of historical fiction. "River of Souls" by Ivon Blum delivers on most of those expectations.

The subtitle, "A Novel of the American Myth", refers us to that subgenre that deals with the same 19th century West that Horace Greeley had in mind. The novel tells the story of a number of men (and one woman) seeking their fortune and/or deliverance in a rumored or dreamt new environment further west from wherever they began. Blum's selection of his main characters runs just slightly askew of the predictable: a Spanish-American cowboy, two mountain men (one American, the other French-Canadian), an escaped slave, and a coming-of-age girl cast out by her father. All of course have 24-karat hearts.

The author provides just enough nuance to keep these characters from becoming stereotypical. Less successfully drawn are subsidiary characters such as the manipulative banker and the evil sheriff. And don't look here (after a half-hearted attempt in the early chapters) for a sophisticated depiction of American Indians. But in this type of novel we expect history to play the major supporting roles, and in this respect Blum doesn't disappoint. The California Gold Rush, the progression of the Santa Fe Trail, and the nature of the New Mexico territory are prominently cast.

Blum doesn't necessarily deliver historical accuracy. What he does provide is its cousin -- a sense of believability. He has created a fictional universe that seems internally consistent and artfully rendered. It doesn't completely coincide with the myths of the West on which many of us were raised; instead and more importantly, he gives us a world which seems slightly more complicated and therefore considerably more convincing.

But he doesn't do this effortlessly. In his determination to create a novel voice of his own and unique dialects for his characters, the sweat sometimes shows through. Yet, instead of being annoyed, I found myself appreciative of the attempt.

As for the plot itself, it struck me as well-paced and adequately complex. Covering the years 1846 to 1853 and locales from Santa Fe to San Francisco, the chapters are short and forceful, advancing the story-line in mostly unexpected ways. Blum does not always seem in full control of his chronology, but he always manages to steer things back on course before losing the reader. A few story lines are left dangling and the book could use a map or two. But these are minor quibbles, and I'm confident most readers will finish "River of Souls" with satisfaction.

A Western with Depth.

River of Souls transports the reader into the real southwest and uses this as a backdrop for exploring coming of age issues in a turbulent time. None of the western stereotypes exist, so when the reader connects with tangential facts and events, it seems all the more real and satisfying. The historical reality combined with the interpersonal intensity of the characters make this a surprisingly enjoyable read.

Love, Gold and Adventure

Review Date: 2000-12-08
Ivon Blum did extensive research for this book, which shows, even while it's an entertaining read. The reason I titled my review as I did is that this book is about love. There's a lot of family love before we get into a romantic interest for Pedro (Pete) Cortez. When we do meet up with Becky, she has been brutalized and is almost dead. Once she regains consciousness, under Pete's care, she's a real little spitfire. Adventure abounds, with Black Hess being the most evil of all characters. Pete searches for and finds gold. A good read and a painless history lesson, take it from a woman and a retired librarian.

I first was introduced to this book at culinary school in the early 1990s. This is a modern look at the classic techniques of the 19th century Escoffier, the foremost authority on French cookery as established by Careme. Escoffier brought order to the professional kitchen, and maintained the high standards of the French palate. The recipes included in this book, however antiquated, are the basic principles of cooking all professional chefs, and serious "foodies" alike, should use in their cooking every day. With a little imagination, every cook can create his or her own signature dishes by using delicious sauces to accompany their fresh and perfectly cooked meat, fish or vegetable. Even more delightful, the historian in me is fascinated with the historical accounts of the development of French cookery; and the comic in me so enjoys the wit used in the author's address to such a serious subject of many a cook's discipline and heart.

I found, however, that the inserted information in each catagory interrupted the flow of the commentary and disturbed my "train of thought". This book should be required reading for the entire country. A crisp and invigorating read, 'Scam Proof,' by Sid Kirchheimer, is packed with information on topics ranging from Telephone Service to Identity Theft; chapters 3, 7, and 8 are especially informative. The length to which the credit card companies will go to fleece Americans borders on the criminal. Furthermore, the similarities that exist between the unfair but legal practices of some of America's most powerful institutions and the ambitious professional conmen of the day are unsettling. Get ready to feel paranoid and disappointed, because this book is an eye opener.

In a format that reminds me of the old Mad magazines, Jon Mathis and Mary Shomon have compiled a book of web sites for cats called "Scratching the 'Net" that would make a great gift for anyone who loves both computers and cats. My favorite site was for Ross Purr-oh, who is apparently still running for president (backed by United We Purr, of course!). Shaper Claw has several pages of its on-line catalog, featuring items such as the Spray-Away Robot, for those times when the cat just can't be there to protect its territory.

From the web sites to the tool bar (including such buttons as Back to Sleep, Open One Eye, and Find Toys), this book is definitely a cat's eye view of the Internet.

I give it 5 purrs and a good lick!

Just spend a few minutes absorbing "Deepcat Chowdown's 'The Seven Spiritual Laws of Laziness' " and if you aren't chuckling with delight, you have no sense of humor at all. Every page is designed to tickle and titillate, with outstanding success.

Very funny, even if you're not a cat-person!

I don't like cats. Never did. I'm a dog person, but reading this funny book (someone gave it to me), made me laugh out loud. I hope the authors come up with something as great for dog lovers! It was a perfect break from the ever so serious world of the net.

Secret Keeping is a fascinating book, not only for those who may be allowing secrets to govern their lives but for those of us whose lives have been impacted by secret keepers. Think you don't know anyone who fits the profile? I encourage you to read this book and you may find you have a new understanding of the behavior of a loved one. We would all like to believe this kind of thing only affects other people, but do yourself a favor and read this book, then decide.

I have wirked with people in recovery from chemical addictions for over 20 years. During treatment they get sober and usually start to deal with their demons that got them their in the first place. but most of the people have a very hard time comming clean, i.e. telling their secrets. John's book goes right to the heart of the matter. He tells us what secrets do to us, how to deal with them and heal them. FREE AT LAST! It's helped me be more open and honest and I will use it in my school. thanks alot John!!

Secret Keeping by John Howard Prin
Do you have a secret? Of course you do we all do.

Do you have something you do that is not producing the results in your life you want it to?
Do you have something in your life that is holding you back from accomplishing what you want?
Wasting time? Cleaning up messes? Dominating your waking hours with worry and concern? Waking you up in the middle of the night forcing you to pace?

Are you living with some one like this?

This is a great book for you.
Mr. Prin with his willingness to share his own personal journey has added much, to help those who struggle.
We all have secrets with many life issues that are difficult to face and even more difficult to share.

It is and excellent book with many clear helpful suggestions. Suggestions a secret keeper can use to, help you face your own secrets--you know the ones, the ones that drag you down and pull you back.
I read this book as a secret keeper and a counselor and it was valuable, I would not hesitate to use it as a reading for clients.

Among many books dealing with addictions, "Secret Keeing" is a notch above. It provides concerte and practical advice in a very straight-forward manner. It is compassionate and yet not bashful all about confronting these all-too-common human prediciments. The messages are helpful and realistic. As a graduate school professor, I have read and written many self-help books. This one stands out in a field of its own.

I saw Willie speak this weekend and his enthusiasm, passion and sincerity blew me away. In this era of the experts who make it their mission to beat people down, Willie makes it his mission to build people up. It's about time for some good news and inspiration!

Worth every penney and worth reading over and over again.

Fantastic!! Very inspirational and practical.

This book is excellent reading for anyone who is experiencing a setback or difficult circumstances. Always positive and uplifting, the book encourages you to see every situation as an opportunity for positive change and growth. Perseverance is a constant theme in the book as well. It's practical, funny, poignant, and right on time!

My good friend Willie Jolley is a winner and has written another winner! If this book doesn't motivate and inspire you to make some changes, you are dead and they haven't buried you yet.

This is the first book I've read by Willie Jolley and it will be the last. If "A Setback is a Setup for a Comeback" didn't repeat passages and themes from his previous book, it would be 40% smaller. If you take away the stories from other motivational & self-help authors that Jolley repeats in this book, take away another 30%. And if you take away every time he mentions the title in the book (repeated almost as a mantra), take away another 5%.

Cliches abound. Like my title for this review tries to convey, you just start shaking your head after reading a certain amountt and wonder if Jolley can write a page without a cliche or "snappy" saying.

To be fair, I did take some good things away from the book. And if he happens to highlight an approach to a life turnaround for you, then it's worth every penny.

So it gets 3 stars. Some good advice for me, but almost to the point of putting the book down for the reasons above.
