Newsletters Must Be Useful, Not Self-Congratulatory
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-24
This book is largely outstanding. The author is a lawyer who has written extensively on law practice management, but anyone who markets a professional service firm of any kind would benefit from this book.

A good client newsletter can build awareness, expand a customer base, encourage repeat business, introduce new products, and help position a company.

In the introduction Zwicker says, "The most important thing to keep in mind when you are designing and writing your newsletter is the very thing most firms forget -- the newsletter is for your clients and prospects. Be sure the result is a publication that meets their needs, not just yours."

Zwicker quotes an article in Inc. magazine: "Most newsletters never get read. [Why?] Poor quality, deadly boring, and self-congratulatory."

Ultimately, the goal of a client newsletter is to "convince the readers that your firm is the one with whom they should do business." But you don't accomplish this by showing...how many cases you've won. You accomplish it by being "informative, entertaining, friendly, and attractive."

To really fill your clients' needs, "you must start thinking about your clients' strategies." How can you help them satisfy their customers or clients? Don't just give your readers information; help them succeed.

You may have to segment your clientele and offer more than one newsletter, if they are a diverse lot with diverse needs. "Many law firm newsletters don't succeed because lawyers try to use one newsletter to serve all their clients," Zwicker says.

Zwicker repeats his mantra again and again: "You must continually ask, 'What do our clients need and want? What do we need to tell our clients to help them with their problems?'" Most readers want serious information to help them identify problems, take advantage of opportunities, and make more money.

Zwicker gives good writing tips: get right to the core of your message, use strong nouns and verbs, use active voice, be crystal clear and unambiguous, write in first person (but don't overuse "I") and second person ("Remember, you are writing a letter to a reader").

Despite a few flaws, Successful Client Newsletters will get the beginner into the swing of newsletter publishing, and will help experienced editors improve their publications.

Required reading for my new staff at our new in-house studio
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-06
This book focuses on the most important part of making television and video - the story. It's an incredible how-to book with solid techniques and tricks-of-the-trade that are described by working professionals. As the senior producer of the second studio I've built for a Fortune 100 corporation, I'm making it required reading for my in-house staff. Our programs will be created this way or we will fail.

A Gem!

Observations of the editor of a small-town midwestern newspaper. Mr. Wolfrom obviously looks at the world through his own, slightly skewed, glasses. And this world is funny!

Just everyday happenings, ordinary musings, but one has to laugh. This old world is a pretty amusing place, especially if seen through the eyes of this modern-day Ambrose Bierce, incidently, another Ohio native son.

Another outstanding book by one of the best writers of the History Mystery Books published by American Girl about 10-12 years ago. Great to read further adventures about Kit Kittredge, the AG who grew up during the great depression. Also always enjoy a good mystery. Is being read now by my 35 yr old dghtr, who will then read it to my 5 yr old gr dgtr --this book appeals to 3 generations! Wish MY parents were alive to have read it...
