Informative and Authoritative; a resource that will be appreciated for generations to come,

Before this book was written students of Hawaiian genealogy found it very difficult to secure information about the ancestors chiefs who shared in the history of the islands. One had to resort to files located in the archives of the State of Hawai'i, the archives of the Bishop Museum, the limited and scattered resources of the state's library system or to the sometimes suspect records of individual families who were more often than not reluctant to share their information. The prospect was not appealing because of the laborious efforts one had to make to gather the scattered materials into a coherent whole. The fact that most of the information was written in the Hawaiian language also presented formidable barriers to those who were not familiar with the language.

Aunty Edith Kawelohea McKinzie, with the helpful assistance of editor Ishmael W. Stagner, II, has done a very great service in providing this work, and its companion, Vol. 2, for the use and benefit of students of native Hawaiian history and genealogies. By gathering together and translating into English the information which was hitherto locked up in fragile copies of old newspapers, hard to decipher microfilm reels or the recollections, written and/or oral, of `kapuna' (respected elders) Aunty Edith has done yeoman work that will last through the decades as a vitally important resource for future genealogists and historians. An expert in the Hawaiian language and a `kumu hula' (expert hula teacher), she has by this work embellished a cultural and genealogical expertise and reputation that was already of the highest order in Hawai`i.

A Turn Back in Time

Dateing back to the early 1900's covering the most interesting front pages for each century a sense of awe overcomes you. Take a walk through the pages of this book and it will bring an inspriational journy back in time to expierence how the past was written. This book, headlines & History, conveys the top stories of the history such as: World War I, World War II, the "shut-off" of Niagara Falls, and many more local events. In comparison to the Encyclopedia this book not only gives the information but also shows the eral photographs and text of writing. Yes, the encyclopedia is works well for research but to get an idea of the past i favor this book. The only problem I found wrong with this book was that the Buffalo News published it almost right before the year 2000 came. I feel, in my own opinion, that they should have published the book after the new millenium so the historic page could also be viewed int he future. I rate this book five stars because it grasps the interst of any age and it is well organized. So, in conclusion, this book portrays the history of every day life of Buffalo and of the world it is sure to be treasured for many more years to come.

As usual, Thomas Boswell has given baseball fans a treat. "Heart of the Order" is a wonderful collection of Boswell's best work from the mid to late 80s. Highlights include reviews of pennant races and an intriguing portrait of Ozzie Smith. "Heart of the Order" is wonderful read for those who love baseball

Socialist cartoonist weaves an ironic hell

Review Date: 2008-06-07
In this early work of cartoonist Art Young we can spot some of the growing socialist sentiments of late 19th Century American artists and writers.

Following in Dante Alighieri's footsteps, Young cast various people of his day into an ironic hell. Lawyers (their section is full to overflowing), police officers, politicians, editors, con-men, rich snobs, insincere preachers, boring storytellers and others who managed somehow to offend Young got their just desserts.

Even political caricaturists (like Young himself) had their special punishment. They were physically pulled and twisted to resemble their own grotesque caricatures.

Through all of hell, through all of his words and illustrations, Young maintained his trademark good humor.

High River And The Times: An Alberta Community And Its Weekly Newspaper 1905-1966 is the true story of a small-town and its weekly newspaper "High River Times". An enjoyable and informative excursion through six decades of change, including two world wars, and the relationship the small newspaper had in recording, articulating, and defending local attitudes, activities, and aspirations, High River And The Times is an aptly researched an endearling presented tour through an era gone by, but not long past.

H.L. Mencken: The Sage of Baltimore
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-16
It's great to see that much of Mencken's work is still available to the common people. It shouldn't be isolated in Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library, and/or Johns Hopkins' University.

The H.L.Mencken room at the Pratt, has been called "the cradle of 20th Century literature." Alistair Cooke, said it exists..."for the comfort of sinners and the astonishment of the virtuous."

As you can see, the author of "Newspaper Days: 1899-1906", was regarded as an iconoclast during his lifetime, and is still celebrated for fresh, refreshing views and commentary. H.L. Mencken was, above all else, a critic.

Mencken wrote his autobiography in three separate volumes cumulatively known, in the world of journalism and literature, as the "Days Books". In addition to the work under consideration here: "Newspaper Days", the other two are "Happy Days: 1880-1892", and "Heathen Days: 1890-1936." As the title suggest, this book looks at H.L. Mencken's life from 1899, when at 19 he began his half-century career in journalism - at the now defunct Baltimore Morning Herald - through his move to the local newspaper of record: The Baltimore Evening Sun. This relationship with the Sun Papers (there was also a Morning Sun) lasted until 1950, when H.L.M. retired from the board of parent A.S. Abell Company.

It was apparent, even this early in the career of "the irreverent Mr. Mencken", that his niche was writing opinion and criticism; some of it shocking to the establishment; all of it entertaining.

Don't let the early period under discussion in this book (1899-1906) lead anyone to believe that the material is dated or old fashioned. Au contraire, Mencken is indeed talking of events which occured a long time ago, but evey word is perfect for the job it is called upon to do. His diction and syntax are all-important.

After all, the reason for remembering and reading a critic of an earlier time, like Mencken, is not the issues he wrote about, but the manner in which he said what he said. It is the WAY he said it -- he was a stylist.

A great man. A great book. Enjoy!

Excellent Year-by-Year History of the Regiment

This book is a fantastic resource for those who want to learn about the 35th Regiment of Foot, the Royal Sussex. Captain Trimen covers the history from its formation in 1701 until 1871 when he was writing it. An enormous amount of information is put into this well-done little book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the story of a marching regiment in the 18th and 19th Centuries. This covers it all.

I was born in Gallup NM, and am related to many of the people in this book, including the Carolyn Volpe. I found many interesting facts about my family and friends of my family that I have heard about for years. Most of those people are gone now, so I found this book very good in providing information for events that I have no one to ask about. I truley enjoyed this book and think Carolyn did a excellent job.
