In the three months since I bought Writing Feature Articles it has proven invaluable in marketing my work, and in making me a better and more confident writer. I recommend this book to anyone seeking guidance about how to sell their work and enhance their creativity.

This is the best book I have found for practical guidance on developing feature articles and marketing them to a wide variety of publications; the author presents information in a way that is easy to follow and a pleasure to read. Excellent resource!

Although intended as a college journalism textbook for aspiring editorial and opinion writers, "Writing Opinion for Impact" has great potential utility for anyone concerned with communication through the written word.
The author begins with a thoughtful discussion of the power and responsibilities of the opinion writer, examines in detail the nuts and bolts of persuasive writing (with pertinent comments and examples from other writers as varied as Dave Barry and Mortimer Zuckerman), and devotes attention to such specialized areas as humorous writing, arts reviews, and sports. Ethical issues and common pitfalls are prominently featured throughout. For those pursuing the subject methodically, each chapter concludes with a handy summary, recommendations for further reading, and practical exercises.
Whether you are a budding mover of public opinion, a letter-to-the-editor devotee seeking greater powers of persuasion, or just a reader who wants to know how it all works, Professor Fink's work is highly recommended, not only for its content, but also as a model of lucid writing in itself. (The "score" rating is an unfortunately ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)

I've read this book for a college course, and overall it is excellent.

The only strange thing about this book is that it is written in a completely different style than one of Conrad Fink's earlier books, "Strategic Newspaper Management." This one, "Writing Opinion for Impact," is quite informal, even chatty, as compared with the formal, almost traditional, style of his newspaper management book. They are so dramatically different, it's as if they weren't even written by the same person.

at first, i was told to become a journalist by my dad because he's a famous journalist in my country. In the beginning, I thought of it as a burden because it wasn't my area. Then I read this book and suddenly, page after page, a light of my hidden talent started to emerge. Then, I finally realized that this is my fate and destiny, to become a journalist. This book is really helpful in anything that is related to being a journalist. All the tips, comments and necessary information was provided in this really fabolous book. I most definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to become and even to the ones who hates of being a journalist. Who knows? Maybe it's your hidden talent!

Now in an updated and expanded third edition, Writing The News: A Guide For Print Journalists, Walter Fox continues to draw upon his more than forty years of experience as a professional journalist, editor, communications specialists, and journalism educator to provide aspiring journalists and news writers with an introductory primer for their trade. Among the issues covered are writing the lead; story development, handling quotes, varieties of the basic structure of writing, examples for the contemporary press, feature narratives, and an enhanced chapter on news style. Writing The News is very highly recommended for students of print and media journalism, as well as article and reportage writing for magazines and periodicals.

"Comic Strip Century" is a classic that is now pretty expensive on the secondhand book market. This reprint of that two-volume book is on terriffic paper with many Sunday strips appearing in color. You can spend weeks poring over this book. If you're looking to blow $20 on comics, this is the way to go because of the incredible value here -- nearly 500 oversize pages of primo classic material! The only thing more classic is the Smithsonian Book of Comics, also very out of print but not hard to find online for cheap.

When you're done with that, you can get busy with some more recent comic reprint projects, such as WALT & SKEEZIX, SO MANY SPLENDID SUNDAYS, POPEYE, PEANUTS, LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE, etc etc.

A small book of uniquely great content. Short texts and plenty of useful illustrations, no hype -
so finally here is book that was really designed for practicing journalists. This is a must for those print editors and journalists who want to keep their job in the next few years. Like me.

Small pamphlet but very realist. Every detail was entertaining, the stories, the diner adds, and the personal adds. Wish there was a little more, but a great addition to any collection non the less.

I found this book extremely helpful while writing my report on earthquakes. Being one of the survivors of this earthquake, I found this book to be something to remember it by. It's great to flip through the pages and look at the pictures and say, "Hey! I know where that is!" I recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

There are a number of reference guides to African-American newspapers and peridocials. From the first known publication, _Freedom's Journal_, published in New York City starting in 1827 to the present, there have been more than 3,500 African-American newspapers and peridocials. Preserving the record of these presses is crucial. Not only did these presses serve as a protest organ, but also documented normal black life, especially as it existed under segregation and Jim Crow laws. In many cases, these papers provide the only extant record of African American life in forgotten and remote towns. Unfortunately, only a small percentage are preserved on microfilm or in other formats. The record of these periodicals is the next most important level of information. _African-American Newspapers and Periodicals_ does an excellent job of documenting these newsapers and magazines. Given the dominance of majority points of view in mainstream publications and the low number of black journalists, the African American press is an essential voice for the black community. If African Americans do not tell their story, no one will. This reference work is the best starting point for learning more about these publications.

In an age when it seems like publishing houses are being snapped up right and left, it's a delight to read interviews with noted publishers who took a chance on writers they loved, regardless of the bottom line (and even made a profit doing so - sometimes). There are nine small press publishers represented here and the interviews are quite detailed and fascinating to read. Those interviewed are Henry Duncan, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, David Godine, Daniel Halpern, Sam Hamill and Tree Swenson, James Laughlin, John Martin and Jonathan Williams. They represent, in no particular order, the publishing houses of City Lights, Cummingham Press, David R. Godine, Copper Canyon Press, Ecco Press, New Directions, Black Sparrow and The Jargon Society, among others.
