A Compelling Hard-Hitting Read
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-30
I just finished this book tonight, and it's one of the best sports autobiographies I've read in ages, and I read most of them. Wayne Embry is a pioneer, and a man that overcame a tremendous amount of racism and adversity in his life to become a power player (GM) of 2 NBA ballclubs.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Embry in passing at camps, and he was a kind gentleman. I always admired him but never knew all that he went through. To be fair in my review, I must say that in reading the book, he seems at times overly-sensitive in his analysis of some situations, especially those with Cavs ownership, and that he often seems to have felt slighted, when he may have just been a casualty of an underachieving ballclub, and NOT the victim of racism.
Either way, the man is an intellect, and also found success in business as a big-time McDonald's franchisee and sat on the BOD of several Fortune 500 companies, as well as a trustee of his alma mater, Miami of Ohio. A man who has been married to the same woman for almost 50 years. A man of conviction.
I say this for Embry, whether or not you agree or disagree with his views, he pulls no punches. He tells it like it is, and does not sugar coat things in this book. There's nothing worse than shelling out $20 or $30 for a book, and then you get nothing but cliche nonsense, or the same old fuzzy stories you already knew from the sports pages or internet.
This book is a must for old-time/vintage NBA fans or those who wonder what it's like to be a GM of a team. Wayne Embry was not only a physical specimen, but a cerebral giant of a man, and this is one helluva read. Kudos, Big Wayne. Regards, James R. Acho, Esq. www.cmda-law.com

UW SOUL study - a great resource
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-17
Research on the effect of the college experience on students has often been done, but the UW SOUL study is the best and most comprehensive of these projects. What brings this project to life is the sections of interviews with students that are presented. As you read the words of these students and match that with the survey data, the reader begins to discover what really goes on during a students' university experience. We begin to see why the academic adjustment can be so difficult and, more importantly, the authors provide suggestions on how this can be remedied. As the reader examines the data and absorbs the students' responses given in interviews, it becomes possible to see what it is that students learn in college and how this learning takes place.
Inside the Undergraduate Experience is essential reading for instructors, administrators, student development personnel, and anyone who wants to better understand the college experience from the viewpoint of the student.

Insightful Guide to the Top 15!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-13
While most books focus solely on numbers and statistics, this book gives you a behind-the-scenes picture of what the school is really like: how hard the professors are, what the students are like, what the school looks for in an applicant, etc.

I actually only wanted to check one of the top fifteen schools in the book, but I ended reading on most of the schools. This book will likely be appreciated by those who are thinking about, are attending, or have already attended one of the institutions in this book. But some may find it quite interesting to read about Harvard Law students, and how the school is different from what many would imagine it to be -- like who knew that some third year Harvard Law students don't attend classes?

I'd recommend this book specifically for those who are planning to apply to those top law schools. For everyone else, you might want to check your local library or bookstore before you purchase this item (as you'll likely skim or read only the school you are interested in).

** Note: Although the book was published over a decade ago, I found most of the material still relevant. However, most of the details will likely be obsolete in a few years.

This is one of the most comprehensive reference books on international educational qualifications available today. It is much more detailed than UNESCO's "World Guide to Higher Education". I would like to ask the publisher when the fifth edition will be published.

Kuh, Schuh, Whitt, and Associates have really developed a a fantastic resource manual. I call it a resource manual in the fact that when I need something to back up my views, opinions, reasoning, etc., I can often turn to this book and find the justification that I need. Not only is it thoroughly research-based, but it provides the type of inspiring information that many of us in higher education look for from time to time.

It might have a shortcoming in that the group only used fourteen institutions in their study, but they openly admit their procedures and appreciate the fact that their scope could be considered somewhat limited. However, their conclusions and recommendations are such that they need not be institution specific. They challenge colleges and universities to not only create a mission, but to strive to meet that mission on a continuum...for it to permeate the scope of the institution from the admissions process, through campus life, and on into alumni programming.

For those truly intrigued with higher education (and especially its outcomes), this is an easy read. The picture that they paint for the "involved college" is somewhat utopian, but I argue that is what makes the book so inspiring. We should all hope to work for and/or attend an institution that can set such high goals not only for its academic curriculum, but for the community of learning that it fosters.

Anyone involved with the lives of college students can't afford to miss out on this book.

What a gem!

This book proves again that the worth of a book is not by its weight, but by its content. This book is certainly much, much better than "Hononrs Programs and Colleges" published by Thomson and Peterson's.

This book selects the best 55 out of all the honors programs at the public universities nationwide. This guide gives an analysis for each honors program, which you will not find in any other books. Furthermore, it ranks these 55 honors programs. This gives students and parents a very good way to choose among the programs.

Indeed, some of these programs provide education as good as Ivy League's. Overall, I highly recommend this book as one of the must-have's college guides.

Excellent Combination of Kanji and Grammar Learning
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-03
Having worked with Volume 1 I already was familiar with the outline of this book. I am a beginners student of Japanese at Tel Aviv University. We study one chapter a week in the book which is quite a moderate tempo but that is about as much as I feel comfortable to grasp per week. The book is divided into exercises based on the grammar in the chapter and it is explained in comprehensible English. There are reading exercises and each chapter also has a kanji section that covers about 10 new kanjis for writing. I have not bought the audio tapes coming with the books yet but have been highly recommended since they are an excellent complement and ensure proper pronounciation and a comfortable method to review the material covered in the chapter.

Fascinating Clairvoyant with a Sparkling Work Ethic...

Review Date: 2005-05-24
I've been consistently impressed by the top clairvoyants in that they stand for a self-responsibility the 1-800 astrologers would never cater to. While her mantra is "we're here to do God's will", her practical message is quite the opposite; that your destiny lies in your hands and can never be subjugated to another.

I'm glad her prophecies for our time have not come to pass; and hopefully they won't. Nostrodamus had similar expectations for a world war in 1999; perhaps Mankind has changed course to save us all; with any luck, it is not just a postponement.

Regardless, this is a great book for the intelligent and will whip into shape those who just want to drift through life and let the stars decide.

This book brings back many memories as Jim Walden built a program that had been the joke of almost all collegiate football and made it into what would eventually become a frequent Bowl participant and a conference championship contender. Walden was the third coach hired in the last three year, he made a promise to stay with the downtrodden program and even though he was not there when WSU made it's improbable apearance in the '97 Rose Bowl, He clearly planted to seeds that started the turnaround. Very similar to the Cindarella story of the Mariners.
