This book has become a cornerstone of my existence. Shakespeare has become a mere footnote compared to this nirvana of literary perfection. I personally know the author and can attest to his impecable diction and vocabulary...and good personal hygeine. He has used all these forms of completing a sentence, every word at his disposal, and has incessantly groomed himself during the creation of said work.

Great read!

Reading this book is like having a nice long conversation with a current student about their college. They give you intimate details that other guides won't tell you and you know you're getting accurate information because there are both pro and con oriented quotes about every aspect reviewed, and they come direct from anonymous students. I really found the "Finding a Job or Internship" section helpful because its' good to know that the college has such great resources to help me when I need to find summer/post-college work.

Truly helpful, well-written, informative guide

I was considering Richmond as one of my final choices for college, and was interested in learning more about it. I knew the college prowler series was well-regarded, and this book was especially helpful. It's a fast but thorough read, and since the author was a student, I tend to trust it more than I would a guide from an old fogarty

As a lifelong resident of Madison and a graduate of UW-Madison, I can confirm that this book is like a tour of Madison from your couch. Before you visit, before you attend college, and if you ever want to know about the best places in Madison, this is your guide. The writer obviously is well-versed in the unique culture of Madison, and provides an excellent reference with a lot of vibrant personality.

An excellent resource

This is an excellent book for a high school student looking at the school, a parent, or even a new student at U of Wisconsin. It's well written, informative, and even funny. I never lost interest and it includes a lot of great detail about subjects from diversity to academics to nightlife. It's really helpful, as it gives a student perspective that you don't have from extensive reports on numerous colleges. Check this out!!

Excellent! Really Clear! Well Written!

In addition to being really well written, the writer seems to infuse lots of information with style and and sense of humor that makes it more than, facts and guides to college life. A must read!!!

Never in my 24 years as a University-level advisor have I seen an advice book that truly gives students an inside look on the world of higher education. It's all here: how to get the best classes, the best recommendations...in short, the best education. And done in a fun and accessible format! When college students find themselves in new and unidentifiable territory where the stakes riding on their academic decisions are tremendous, this guide will be their compass. The saavy advice and charming creativity of Ms. Leslie and her co-author are not to be missed. A+!

Dr. Lepore and Ms. Leslie have written a memorable compilation of useful advice that every student should be well acquainted with before entering the university environment. In short, this book, "What Every Student...", is an extremely well-written and invaluable work that will no doubt become a staple of every college student's education. I highly recommnend it!

This is really a wonderful work. One of the authors is a university professor; the other is an undergraduate: this in itself is an inspired idea. But what really makes the book stand out is the way that they have managed to translate their combined wisdom into genuinely useful practical advice. If you are looking for a gift for someone college-bound, look no further...

How To Avoid The Pitfalls of The Admission Process...And There Are Many!
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-11
I bought this book with the intent of giving to my daughter, who is quickly approaching the age where college applications, essays and interviews fill the air. I decided to read it myself, as I have bought her several books about college that have turned out to be duds. I wanted to make sure she wouldn't waste valuable time reading a book that wouldn't be of any help to her.

I discovered the book is full of advice on how to write essays that many top colleges are seeking and how to avoid pitfalls that are common to applicants. In addition, I also discovered a wealth of information on how to interview and what traps to avoid during that process. The book is well written and the information timely and helpful if you are trying to get into a top school, or if you are a student with poor grades trying to get into an average school. It is written in plain language, and although there is some redundancy, it is a book that can easily be read by college bound high school students.

The one caution is that the book is geared for students who are seeking admission into liberal arts colleges. They are the primary colleges that are looking at essays and using interviews for admission purposes. More technical colleges, as my daughter has discovered, are looking more at course load and grades, and put little emphasis or importance on the essay/interview process. If you are looking to go to a technical college, this book might help a little, but it is very helpful for those seeking admission into top liberal arts colleges.

"Yale University: Off the Record (College Prowler)" is a must have for any high school student, college transfer, or parent thinking about attending or simply researching the university. The information is provided in both an informative and interesting manner. I love the fact that it's entirely written by a current student and that I learned things I'd likely never have found out if I'd just relied on the bigger reports out there. Some of the unique elements include sections on "Guys and Girls", "Finding a Job or Internship", and "Off-Campus Housing". The student quotes are especially helpful, as they give insight into all aspects of the school's culture that you won't get on a college tour. I highly recommend this book.

This guide is the definitive resource on Yale University. Unlike other books that are huge compendiums with just a bit of information on all universities, this book covers the college in depth, from academics to the party scene to parking to safety and security. And unlike, propaganda provided by the university itself, this guide is impartial, written by an actual student, and contains a collection of real student quotes on every topic! Not only does this book provide an honest look into Yale, it is a great resource once there. It includes a restaurant guide, lists of the best places to study, the best places for coffee, the best places to go clubbing, the best ways to get around town (including phone numbers for taxi services, rental cars, airports, etc.), and it gives information on the local movie theaters, hotels, night spots, etc. There is even a list of Yale slang - you will be speaking like a Yalie before you even arrive! This guide is a must for every prospective student, every parent, and every student about to begin his/her education at this great university.

As a current graduate student, barely removed from my undergraduate days, "50 College Lessons From Outside the Classroom" addresses a part of college life most modern books often ignore. Indeed, prior to entering college, adolescents are drowned with advice and suggestions on how to succeed inside the classroom. With a poignant yet succint style, Ms. Boutet offers wisdom for an equally significant aspect of college life. Through her own experiences, Ms. Boutet provides a much needed framework for all future college entrants...

Quick Tips at Your Fingertip

I came across this book, by accident in my university library. I thought this book would be like any other tips book... well it is.
But the thing is, it is the most compact research tips book I could ever found until now.

All the tips here come in dotted style. So, if you are in a hurry, which every research student usually is, would really appreciate book like this. But, it's not all about list of dogmatic things to do. Every tips are accompanied with brief explanation, which is suffieciently given in my opinion.

This book comprise of 52 small chapters. The chapters are classified based on things to do. For example, 'Giving your first conference paper', Getting started in publishing', 'Submitting your thesis', etc. So, if you are in a hurry, you could just go to specific chapter and read what things to do there. I use those lists, for kind of keeping track of myself.

Enjoyable approach towards a boring field!!

a very good book for researchers embarking for a higher degree (masters or Ph.D.). interesting format with useful tips on many aspects of the research experience. draws attention to aspects that go mostly unnoticed by many of us (many tips deal with common sense matters though). deals with practical issues, unlike many works in this field that tend to concentrate on the 'emotional & stressful" sides of research' ! good chapters on: GETTING STARTED, FINDING YOUR FEET AND KEEPING THEM, READING WRITING FINISHING ... etc. a useful book. I recommend it strongly.

Wonderful Resource

Review Date: 2008-07-10
I am the mother of a college sophomore and a high school junior so I've bought and skimmed through a lot of college books over the years. Many of them disappoint me because they are often focused on getting kids into the Ivy League. This fixation is ridiculously misplaced when you consider that only .2% of kids attend these eight schools.

Jerry Israel's book, however, is extremely helpful because it addresses the needs of all teenagers intent on attending college. It's a very empowering book because it explains that high school students and their parents enjoy far more bargaining power than they realize. One of the themes of the book is that schools need and want good kids -- even if they don't have 4.0 GPA's and killer SAT scores. In many ways, it's a buyer's market.

The key, of course, is to find solid academic and financial fits and Israel, who was the former president of the University of Indianapolis, provides lots of suggestions.

Israel doesn't name any specific institutions in his book, which is one of the reasons why I think my own title, The College Solution: A Guide for Everyone Looking for the Right School at the Right Price, would make a perfect companion book. My book shares the same educational philosophy, but it also names names. I provide real examples, for instance, of how colleges decide who will receive the best aid packages and who won't. I also mention the names of schools in the chapters that I devote to explaining how families can truly evaluate schools as well as departments within them.

I think anybody who reads the 75 Biggest Myths About College Admissions and The College Solution will be well prepared for the college odyssey.

75 Truths About the Business of College Admissions
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-01
The cover of The 75 Biggest Myths About College Admissions offers the reader the opportunity to "Stand Out from the Pack, Avoid Mistakes, and Get into the College of Your Dreams." The book delivers on all counts and more.

On one level it works as a "How To" book for high school students desiring an inside look at the college admissions process and the best approaches to get accepted by the college(s) of their choice. Each of the 75 biggest myths are presented and accompanied by a "Reality" with detailed explanation of that reality.

Often, it is a reality that less than consumer friendly institutions of higher learning might not want shared.

The book provides students with tactics to make themselves informed consumers looking for a college environment that best fits their educational and financial needs. Just as important, it provides means to discern whether their prospective colleges are truly consumer friendly, actively seeking to meet those needs.

A veil is removed that depicts the selection process as one often based upon business decisions not always in the best interest of the prospective student, and sometimes not even in the best interest of the institution involved. The book details how colleges obtain student information along with the approaches and time lines used to recruit and make financial offers. It outlines tactics for students and parents to measure the merit of potential financial aid.

If this book is interpreted only on the "How To" level it deserves to be read by high school guidance counselors and any student seeking admission. It also might serve as a guide to university personnel seeking advice on becoming consumer friendly.

On another level this book provides something even more important to prospective college students, something likely to be appreciated by their parents. It presents a reality and philosophy about the true meaning of this process, student success. Myth 2 states, "Success in life depends on which college you choose." The reality is, "Success in life depends not on which college you go to, but whether you graduate from college."

From that point on the book not only outlines tactics to use in gaining admission to the college of your choice, but interweaves with those realities what it means to be the kind of student that can make the most of this book and their full college experience. It provides a proactive selection approach for the student, suggesting topics like an unannounced visit to campus to test the institution's receptiveness and ability to react. It awakens the potential recruit to the reality that this process, to get the most out of it and their future college experience, should not be one of passive acceptance of whatever is placed in front of them. Students should use this process to apply and improve their critical thinking skills in making one of the most important decisions of their lives.

Those of us that have lived our lives, attended college, and graduated can read this book, accompanied by periodic smiles, recognizing many of the things we should have known but did not.

The 75 Biggest Myths About College Admissions is available at your local book store.

This is a wonderful story. Calling all film makers -- especially native ones -- this would make a hell of a screenplay. But readers and writers will love the book. The tone of the story is superb, the author writes of painful things without selfconsciousness and explores the experience of growing up a mixed blood Indian in ways that make it real for any audience. The characters are memorable, the story of the love between Alley and Sara will touch your heart and the descriptions are poetic. Wise Grandfather will make you laugh. Get to know that special place known as "The Absence of Angels" -- you won't regret it. Penn is an award winning author also, whose other novel (Killing Time With Strangers) won the American Book Award and is also a must-read.
