The poem is very eccentric than many others that I've read.

The main reason on why I have reveiwed this book and have given it a 4-stars is because it's a great poem, but there are a few words missing that could and should be in it.

Scholarly, with a touch of humor

Definitely readable. A must for 'Casey' fans and for school libraries.

This is more of a "coffee table book" than a serious history. Nice photos.

A global view of the history and development of Scouting around the globe
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-16
This is a very interesting history of Scouting as it began in the United Kingdom and what it has become there today. What was Boy Scouts is now, in Europe, just Scouts and includes boys and girls and makes no distinction in sexual orientation. It is also a much more urban organization.

This book is full of interesting and useful information and great historical pictures about the origins of Scouting and its spread around the globe. On pages 186-187 it lists many countries and how many registered scouts there are in each of them. Indonesia is by far the largest with over eight million scouts (8.9 million). The United States is second with 6.2 million.

Another section of the book provides a paragraph or two of how scouting functions in various countries around the world. And in the appendix there is a chronology of important events in the history of the scouting movement.

If you love scouting, this is a very nice book. However, for Americans with our more conservative approach to Boy Scouting, some portions of this book will seem a bit odd. However, this book is about the GLOBAL view of scouting over history and our BSA is only a portion of it, no matter how much its culture and history matter to us here in the USA.

Oversimplistic and information-poor
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-28
Only the most obvious is stated, and then only in the simplest possible way, with no background information, no "story" behind each symbol, its use by particular artist at particular time in history etc.
On the other hand very visual in presentation, therefore rather clear and simple, easy to understand.
Recommended if you are interested in the subject on a very superficial level.

A Valuable Guide to Understanding References in Paintings
Helpful Votes: 38 out of 41 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-10
SYMBOLS AND ALLEGORIES IN ART was originally published in Italian by author Mathilde Battistini and is here resubmitted to the art loving public in a translated version courtesy of the Getty Foundation. The book is visually stunning and informative and offers a very handy reference volume for the museum visitor as well as the artist in understanding the derivation of symbols and myths and allegories that have sustained a presence in painting since the Baroque period.

Well designed in a logical way, each symbol or mythological character or even still life component is fully illustrated with a full page painting and accompanied by a terse but informative few paragraphs of explanation. The fine aspect is the manner in which each painting is easily identified at the moment it is introduced, and even though a fine bibliography is found in the back of the book, for once the information necessary to make the 'connect' is right before the eyes of the viewer.

This well illustrated volume is a welcome adjunct to the art history library as well as an interesting companion for the reader whose fascination in mythology is what brings them to art in the first place! Recommended. Grady Harp, February 06

Very nice, but a bit too modern
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-27
This is a very nice, large format, book full of quality illustrations. My only complaint is that the latter half of the book is devoted almost exclusively to modern (futurists, surrealists, abstractionist, etc.) arts. If the entire book had been devoted to real artists - those who paint recognizable subjects and do it well - then this book would merit 5 stars.

I received this fabulously beautiful book as a gift and am absolutely thrilled with it. I intend to spend many hours studying the pieces and reading about the women who created them. I would recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in aesthetics and an appreciation for women as artists.

Elihu Root--A Man of, and Ahead of, His Time
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-08
Elihu Root was a prolific statesman with a prodigious intellect, and the addresses and speeches contained in this book are full of elegant language and remarkable insights. They are written in a manner that is accessible to readers of high school age or older. The arguments and observations Mr. Root makes are clear-eyed and conciliatory, and they are as applicable in today's geopolitical environment as they were 100 years ago. His arguments are also distinct from those posed by most contemporary pundits and politicians insofar as Mr. Root is willing to consider both sides and seek middle ground. In reading other source material about Mr. Root, it is clear that he was an extremely focused, fairly self-effacing social servant. He was also devoid of self-promotional tendencies. I suspect that is why he isn't mentioned more prominently in discussions about 20th century American diplomacy. He needed a better press secretary.

Middleton, Shaw, Fortney and Lynch. If you haven't had the opportunity to attend a workshop that they are giving that should be a priority. If you can't fit it into your schedule or budget this book is the next best thing to working side by side with them. If you have had the opportunity, then American Vision will serve as an economical reinforcement of the lessons that they present in their workshops. The book is easy to read, and the photos...well they serve as a constant reminder that "anyone" can take good nature photographs.

A respectful and decent view of Africa
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-02
This book by Achebe and Lyons is infact a decent and respectful view of Africa. It does not contain pictures of Starving children or wars. The photographs taken by Lyon shows ordinary Africans going about their business with dignity. There is also a very good essay by Achebe discussing the Images of Africa over time.It uses as it's main theme a discussion of Joseph Conrad's book the heart of darkness. He does not shy away from issues such as slave trade and wars, but he treats the subject of Africa's image with dignity. There are also a number of poems after a few pictures. The pictures are about 100. My only grouse with the book is that no pictures were taken of Nigeria and South Africa which are indeed countries that show all the contradictions and hopes of Africa.I say this mainly for sentimental reasons being a Nigerian i would have loved a picture of the hustle and bustle of Ojuelegba in Lagos or the Onitsha market. It is however a welcome addition to my library.

Arts in Sikhism
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-30
Last few decades of Sikhism has seen fairly negative image from both the political and media world. Here is a book with a refreshing change. It brings out something more positive from Sikh World, and portrays the Arts during Sikh Kingdom.

This book presents a dazzling array of objects ranging from paintings and textiles to ceramic tiles, metalwork, books, decorative arts and photography, which all attest to the flourishing of the traditional arts during Sikh rule and thereafter.

This book complements the exhibition "The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms". The author is also curator of this exhibition from Victoria & Albert Museum.

(this exhibition is being held at ROM, Toronto, Canada from May 27 to Aug 20, 2000)
