For all the talk about virtualization, e-business, and post-capitalism, little has been written about how these ideas affect they way in which the new and old merge. This book is an ecellent discussion of the "renewal paradox." ...how stable companies try to integrate unstable project teams in thier fold and try to make both work. The choice, the authors argue, is not one or the other ---but both together. This work is very well articulated and provides excellent fodder for thought to researchers and managers alike. Although this book is authored by four collaborators, not once did I feel that in reading it. Although many references are in Swedish, there are still many gems of literature that the authors provide pointers to. Very highly recommneded.

Wonderful Treatment of Important Subject

This an excellent study that forms a viewpoint for evaluating the next 20 years of oil and related energy isssues. I'm currently involved in such a study and find the book to be fascinating reading and extremely helpful in framing the possibilities. The focus is on the next twenty years, starting with an evaluation of "conventional wisdom". It then surveys key interest areas: Oil Supply, Transportation, Natural Gas, Prices, Energy Security, and acceptability.

All of the surveys are of high quality - I particularly found myself attracted to the depth of treatment in the natural gas section, and balance in the view taken of acceptability of energy supply. Other topics also treated with great evenness are issues such as oil availability, competing technologies, competition within segments, security, global warming, and social impact. The book ends in an excellent discussion of challenges and choices.

I thank the authors for putting together this very informative and useful review of oil and energy. I also thank Amazon for making this book so available in a timely way.

This collection of essays provides a clear, thorough and very readable introduction to contemporary British politics. It explains why Labour (aka "New Labour") won the biggest majority in the British House of Commons since 1945, and offers some excellent insights into both the immediate future of the Conservative Party and the longterm development of British democracy.

Everybody knows that the US economy is generating a lot of low-wage, dead-end service jobs. Now there's a book that knows what to do about it. This book is chock full of cheap, practical, useful ways of turning dead-end jobs into careers, linking jobs to training, facilitating employee organization. Should be part of the platform for Republicans and Democrats.

Rife with insights into the rapidly changing modern world and the resulting implications
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-07
Written by Luis Rubalcaba (Associate Professor of Economic Policy, University of Alcal, Madrid, Spain), The New Service Economy: Challenges and Policy Implications for Europe is a serious-minded assessment of the modern challenges involved in the new global economy, including dynamic changes in employment, productivity, innovation, and competitiveness. Especial focus is placed upon the case of European services, as compared and contrasted to America. Chapters discuss the historical and anthropological origin of the service economy, the globalization of services and offshoring, policy implications for the European Union, and much more. "Increased innovation and productivity are needed in order to meet the new competitive requirements arising out of globalization. Services have been, and still are, active agents of globalization, although they themselves face the challenges of competitiveness. Services are starting to copy the relocation trends that have characterized manufacturing industry for the past thirty years. Services-offshoring is emerging strongly, although the statistics might lead us to think that it is not a very significant and generalized phenomenon." Supported by extensive scientific research, graphs, and notes, The New Service Economy is an utterly indispensable addition to college and graduate-level economic studies shelves, rife with insights into the rapidly changing modern world and the resulting implications especially for Europe.

The book covers issues concerning mutual relations between two world economic powers - USA and UE. Autors explain strengths and weaknesses of both organisms. They analyze present situation like trade wars about bananas or geneticaly modified food. They also, what is done very well, try to predict the future situation of contacts between USA ad UE.This is a great book not only for students, but also for people who want to keep up with today's politics and economics.
