Finding Balance through Compass of Health

It's amazing to read Dr. Kim's work and find my own constitution described. You will too! Find your body type and then understand your body's strengths and weaknesses, what foods help and/or hurt you, what type friend you make. He even provides a list of famous people with similar body types, like Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee. Even the hero and villan sets Kim describes are intriguingly paired; his descriptions help me understand how balanced the whole world is and how we can understand ourselves more clearly by understanding concepts laid out in Kim's interesting, first-rate book. If you're into keeping healthy, Compass of Health is a must read!

I've always been a curious person concerned with self developement and this book is a unique breath of fresh air! It's a different approach for me and worth the investigation of anyone who wants to learn who they are and how to help themselves through the principles mentioned. Very readable and enlightening.

This is one incredible book. Inlander does the best job I've seen of voicing consumer concern and disgust with the current health care system. His humor is wonderful, but his message is quite serious. This is a book anyone using our health care system should read.

What makes this book amazing is the candor of the author. He holds nothing back when challenging the health care system. He clearly speaks for most consumers who are sick and tired of the greed and secrecy of today's health care system. This is a must read for every medical consumer.

This book is amazing! I got it at the library originally, wasn't really interested but it looked fairly new so I thought, why not? Once I opened the cover, I knew I had to have a copy of my own!!
First off this book is NOT telling you not to have medical treatment-as a matter of fact, it supports it completely. What it is saying is what you can do holistically in ADDITION to your medical treatment.! This book is a must for everyone not just those with breast cancer! It tells you what to eat to prevent cancer...Green Tea is like Magick!! What to eat to rid your body of unwanted radiation. What to consume when you go thru Chemo. It lists different foods, drinks, and herbs and tells their medicinal benefits.
What a great book!! If you don't believe me, go to your local library first and check it out...you'll soon be ordering it thru Amazon yourself!! :)

Dr. Kaur's book contains a wealth of information for all of us. When I picked up this book I had no idea how helpful it would be in my own battle with breast cancer. The information is detailed, well referenced and so attractively organized and presented that you feel a very personal touch coming through. I recommend this book to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer as well as those interested in making positive changes in their lifestyle aimed at preventing breast cancer. If you get one book, this is all you will need. Dr. Kaur is clearly someone with great integrity who has uncovered every aspect of this issue. As a medical doctor, my own perspective has changed and I have recommended this book to many of my collegues.

"Conquer Crisis with Health Esteem" is about the truth---how searching for the truth will help increase your self-esteem. Facing your worst enemy, is another way of putting it. In 1985, author Judith Parker Harris did just that in order to get well from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Not accepting this fate and after months of hopeless searching for a cure within the traditional medical system, Judith turned inwards. She sought deep into her soul where haunting memories stepped forward demanding her immediate attention. Slowly Judith became an expert in healing herself. It took five years. This workbook combines the soul with the physical. It lists the many questions Judith had to face in order to get well as well as some of her encouragingly brave and open answers. "Conquer Crisis with Health Esteem" is for anyone who wishes to master any crisis.

A REVIEW

of

Conquer Crisis with Health Esteem

by Judith Parker Harris

I wanted to write a review of this book for all of those healthy readers who might not consider it to be of value to them. I was one of those people. I am rarely ill, consider myself a pretty well adjusted person, have friends, a career, and deal with all of lifes little surprises fairly well. Also I have rarely been interested in or read what I considered a self-help book. And then I turned 49. All of a sudden I wasn¹t dealing with anything very well. And I was going through a complete reevaluation of my entire life....and coming up short. It was a very uncomfortable year. It left me in something of a crisis.

I picked up Judith Parker Harris¹ book because I have been privileged to work with her for the last few years producing public service announcements. For the first few years of our friendship, I didn¹t know that she had Multiple Sclerosis. And when I found out I was more than impressed by her ability to have cured her symptoms and controlled her disease. I have had friends completely debilitated by this disease and I had never known anyone who had managed to control it before. And when I talked to her about some of the things I was going through, she always had something very insightful to say. So I bought a copy of the book and skimmed it, pretty sure it wouldn¹t be relevant to my situation. I was wrong.

I have now read Judith¹s book cover to cover. I did the exercises. I took a long time to finish the book. And as I did each of the exercises, and read each section, I found a clarity that I hadn¹t expected. More than once I found myself saying: Well this finally makes sense. She gave me the tools I needed to make some changes. And now I find that I¹m going back to reread certain parts of the book sort of as a measurement and check on myself. When I am faced with difficult decisions or situations that leave me feeling powerless I can refer back to this book to regain a sense of control, a feeling of being able to solve my problem in a healthy way.

So, if you¹re looking for some answers, whether to a particular crisis or, as in my case, to several long standing issues you¹ve managed to not deal with and which are holding you back, you might try this book. It¹s one of the most worthwhile uses of time and energy I have encountered in a long time. To quote Heather Locklear and all those LOreal spokeswomen, in the end I did it because I¹m worth it.

This is the most relevant approach to controlling herpes that I have found. Anyone can follow her program. Ms Picozzi reviews how to bolster the immune system through diet, stress management, exercise. The overall result is a healthier body and immune system. After a number of years of searching for a resource that is concise, useable and effective, this book is well worth the money. Thank you Michele!

Helpful and thorough source for alternative therapies
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-17
This book lives up to its title of taking a "holistic approach" as it promotes a dozen or more alternative therapies to prevent and heal outbreaks.

When this book was published there was very little scientific research available on specific treatments for herpes except for one drug, so I didn't expect to find much in the way of research study citations to support the validity of most of the alternative therapies discussed here.

However, the author does a good job of providing credible sources and important information throughout the book, whether it be about statistics, prevention strategies, early warning signs, who gets herpes or drug-free remedies, including the familiar amino acid lysine.

Any health practitioner will tell you the key to avoiding future outbreaks is to keep the immune and nervous systems healthy, which is exactly what this book tells you how to do in a clear, straightforward manner.

The Culture of Power in Serbia: Nationalism and the Destruction of Alternatives (Post-Communist Cultural Studies.)

Universally significant - not just a book about Serbia
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-30
Gordy identifies the methods by which the Milosevic regime, which obviously provided few benefits to its people, nonetheless maintained its power. Gordy identifies these methods as the "destruction of alternatives-" the removal of alternative political ideas, or of cultural institutions, such as popular music, that would enable individuals to unite in thought in a manner distinct from, and therefore threatening to, the regime.

This is indeed quite valuable to students of Yugoslavia or Eastern Europe; its broader value, however, is its contribution to the larger issues of power studied by sociologists and political scientists. How is power maintained? We frequently assume that individuals will revolt if conditions are so bad they have nothing to lose. Gordy documents the ability of the powerful to actually take away this option. Most mechanisms, such as cencorship, make revolt more difficult, raising the pain level people will tolerate; however, by keeping the more politically savvy urbanites near starvation, the regime actually compromised their very ability to express dissent.

Gordy provides an academic and, to the degree it is possible in social science, empirical explanation of power that is profoundly disturbing; sometimes it may be impossible to displace the powerful. True, outside forces crippled the regime; but what does this suggest about the American line that local groups should revolt to demonstrate support for democracy and earn military support? Don't throw it out yet, but Gordy presents an important argument. It also helps explain the success of earlier brutal regimes; Haile Selassie used similar techniques far more adeptly, and therefore more brutally, in Ethiopia. This book is both an insightful analysis of the Serbian regime's tactics and a significant study of the nature of power.

Turbo Folk and the Cut-Out Bin of History
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-11
Struggling to understand how Slobodan Milosevic managed to tighten his grip on power in Serbia despite a disasterous decade of war and economic decline? Or would you just like to know why authoritarian regimes produce such terrible pop music? Eric Gordy's "Culture of Power in Serbia: Nationalism and the Destruction of Alternatives" is a good place to start for both questions. Though written before the war in Kosovo and Milosevic's subsequent fall from power, the book provides a useful framework for understanding both the durability of his regime and the fragility of its popular support. Prof. Gordy argues that Milosevic maintained power not through any skill in governing (the record on that score is pretty clear), but by systematically dismantling any alternatives that Serbian civil society could muster. As one would expect, Gordy covers in some detail Milosevic's attempts to co-opt, stifle and crush rival political parties and media organizations. What is unique about this book is the long chapter devoted to the underground music scene in Belgrade. The regime rightly perceived a threat to its political as well as cultural dominance, and rallied its forces behind a smarmy concoction dubbed "Turbo Folk".... This musical atrocity does not, of course, compare to those committed in Bosnia and Kosovo, but it is a chilling read nonetheless. Gordy clearly brings a mastery of Serbo-Croatian literary and musical idiom to this section. One wishes only that the book were accompanied by a CD. Though written from a sociological perspective, this book is full of lively if understated prose, and offers much to engage the non-specialist and general reader.

Top-notch research and writing
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-16
Gordy's basic premise is that the rather unpopular, corrupt and war-mongering regime controlled by Slobodan Milosevic in Serbia during the 1990s retained its hold on power by eliminating any meaningful alternatives to itself. He provides a very detailed account of how this was done in the fields of culture, politics, the media and the economy. Since the book was written and published in 1999, when Milosevic was still in power in Serbia, the basic question posed by the study, i.e. how does he manage to stay in power, should be replaced with how did he manage to stay in power so long? Otherwise, this is a vitally important study, as the matters Gordy covers here illuminate many aspects of political culture in Serbia during the 1990s - and help readers understand the country's current political malaise as well. Despite the many changes that have occurred since Milosevic's fall from power, the legacy of the `destruction of alternatives' he helped institute will continue to dog Serbian society for years to come (and, looking over the fence from Croatia, I have to add: just as the legacy of Franjo Tudjman still haunts and troubles Croatian society today and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future).

This is a great book. It is written by a naturopath who grew up as a child in Yugoslavia and lived very close to nature as a child. She calls 'em as she sees 'em and I find her perspective and approach very refreshing and very needed in today's over-medicated and over-processed world. One could use just this one book to become well from almost any malady. However I would not buy it here unless Amazon.com starts selling it again because the people who are selling it used are selling it for over 20 bucks more than the author sells the book for on her own website.

This has been one of the best books I have ever read on this topic. Using humor, which flows natural throughout, the author makes the subject matter of homeopathy not only enjoyable, but thoroughly understandable.

The glossary is wonderful. The author is very adept in describing symptoms in order for the reader to find his/her problem easily.
Her thorough knowledge on this topic is apparant. Along with recommendations for a cure, the author spends a good amount of time on prevention and maintaining your health.

Without the least hesitation, I highly recommend this first-rate book on this subject of Homeopathy for the beginner and the advanced. I haven't seen anything this good, on this topic, in a long time.

This is not only a tremendously useful book, but it is also fun to read. The author does not assume any previous homeopathic knowledge by the reader, so includes an excellent short history of homeopathy and its principles.

Then she delineates symptoms and regimens, including excellent descriptions of the remedies. The book has an extensive glossary and goes into some pretty subtle decriptions of symptoms, so the patient can zero in on his or her particular problem.

And there are some excellent recommendations for prevention and maintenance.

The author gives the subject the serious attention it deserves, but also manages to inject some delightful humor along the way.
There are clear tables to aid in diagnosis and treatment.

The best so far that I have read on this topic.

In my search for spiritual life I happened upon the teaching of Avatar Adi Da Samraj. I can see now that it was not an accidental happening, but an inevitable one. The first book by Avatar Adi Da that I ever studied was the Da Love-Ananda Gita.

Da Love-Ananda Gita is a gift of perfect wisdom. Its expression is direct and complete, and if you allow yourself to be immersed in it, a simplicity is revealed that will break your heart. How to live a life of Grace. That is what I always wanted, and I hardly dared to believe I was being given this secret so freely.

The book is really a love affair. It is the love between my heart and the Divine, exquisitely described and evoked. As Avatar Adi Da concludes the final essay, "What is a Greater Message than this?"

This book drew me into the mystery of who Adi Da IS.

"Gita" means song and the Da Love-Ananda Gita strikes me as the song of all songs. Adi Da Samraj writes that his state of consciousness is "Happiness Itself," a state of happiness that is completely free of anything less than itself. The Da Love-Ananda Gita drew me toward this feeling of happiness itself, this unfathomable mystery and miracle, which I think is easily reason enough to read this book.

This Gita (song) will be sung forever.

The Da Love-Ananda Gita is like an outline of the true means to worship the Divine. It's also an argument for what and who god really is. I found this argument so convincing that it relieved me of my search for any other form of god.
