Having had chronic allergies since childhood, I constantly look for information that may lead to relief from my allergies. In December 2000 I read a draft of this book and decided to give some of the recommendations a try. At that time I was taking one allergy pill a day. Now, five months later, I take on the average two to three pills a month, and additionally I feel better overall. Definitely worth a read.

After reading Dr. Uy's book and following his recommendations, I am presently experiencing my best month of May in 20 years. Typically during hay fever season, I need a variety of prescription medications to breath comfortably. This year has been different. I have not felt the need to take any pills or sprays. I hope this book helps those who read it, as much as it has helped me.

This book, is interestingly written with a scientist's personal point of view. He gives many easy to implement tips that he has found useful by chronicling his own battle with allergies. I have horrible allergies and used to start each day with nosebleeds and nose blowing unless medicated. After following his suggestions on sleeping, caffeine and drinking, I can usually have an allergy free day. I found William Uy's book to be unique in that it takes a whole new approach to allergies, one that suggests you can help your body heal from allergies instead of relying on medications only.

After reading Dr. Uy's book and following his recommendations, I began to experience relief within one month. I am breathing freely, after suffering with sinus and allergy symptoms for the past 20 years. I am presently enjoying springtime medication-free without headaches or sinus congestion. I am very happy to have found something that works for me.

Don't let the name fool you. There is more to this book than "spa" recipes. It is full of common sense home remedies for more than 100 ailments including everything from vericose veins to alergies.

This was a great book for do-it-yourselfers. I've enjoyed the different recipes that focus on different conditions. This did not introduce many different types of beauty products or treatments, but offered a tremendous amount of work in aromatherapy treatments for different types of conditions. It's a great book to keep on hand.

I am all about taking care of our health in a holist way. The great thing about this book is that, for me, it does two things at once. It gives natural remedies for health conditions that feel self-nurturing. I so appreciate that. Recently I had bronchitis and while I applied the natural remedies I felt pampered at the same time. Can't beat that ... especially when you're sick!!

Great reference & well worth the price!

This comprehensive "health & wellness" book not only covers aromatherapy (my main interest), but also covers breath work, diet/lifestyle tips, herbal remedies & teas, sound & music therapy, and yoga. It provides a variety of remedies for an exhaustive list of ailments, such as: Allergies, Chicken Pox, Colds, Depression, Headaches, Hyperactivity, Insomnia, Muscle Cramps, Nausea, Dry/Oily/Sensitive Skin, Stress & Anxiety -- to name a few.

A wide variety of aromatherapy, herb, and food recipes are included, such as: Asthma Oil Blend; Bachache Massage Oil; Cool, Calm, & Collected Tea; Peaceful Sleep Spray; Farm Fresh Facial Scrub; Lavender-Rose Silken Lotion; Sore Throat Gargle; Stay-Healthy Spice Seasoning; Tasty Teething Biscuits; and Old-Fashioned Garlic and Onion Soup. Pure essential oils are a must for the aromatherapy recipes, but most other recipes include easily-obtained ingredients, which can be found at a grocery or health food store.

Packed with useful information, some case studies, and factual data, it's also written in an easy-to-read, conversational style. My only complaint is that the Essential Oil References section in the Appendix could have been lengthier & more helpful. For instance, the author lists only one company as a supplier of pure essential oils. And only lists HER OWN company as a source for additional Aromatherapy and Holistic Education information. Also, one future recommendation for the book would be to have an additional index of recipes by title (e.g., currently, you have to remember that the Garlic Soup recipe is in the "Bronchitis" section or look up "soup" in the index).

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for ways to cope with everyday stress or specific health/emotional problems, or just to improve their quality of life!

This is the most comprehensive book on food enzymes I have read to date. It includes a body typing based on body shape, personality, and potential health problems and how they relate to digestive needs and imbalances and how to correct using foods and enzymes. Easy for the layman and a boon for the practitioner.

The BEST book on enzymes
Helpful Votes: 29 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-26
I've read several books on enzymes and have been using them in my acupuncture practice about a year. I've had great success treating chronic inflammation, sinusitis and acid reflux.

One of my patients had sinusitis so bad he couldn't smell anything. After taking anti-inflammatory enzymes a few weeks, he can now smell things he hasn't smelled in years.

Enzymes can be used to prevent and treat cancer, atherosclerosis, parasites and candida. Many people suffer from inadequate digestion, leading to malnutrition. When you take a high quality enzyme supplement, you will digest your food for a change and feel amazingly better.

A deficiency in lipase can cause a person to be unable to lose weight. Lipase digests fat and you must have enough to burn your body fat. Taking supplemental lipase between meals will allow the enzymes to be absorbed into your bloodstream to dissolve fat deposits of all sorts, including in your arteries. (atherosclerosis)

Protease digests protein. The outer coating of cancer cells is made of a very thick protein. If you take supplemental protease, your immune system will utilize it to dissolve the protein coating on cancer cells.

Chronic ear infections can be cleared up with protease. The infection is caused by a virus. The virus has a protein coating that can be dissolved so the immune system can eradicate it.

This book is truly amazing. This is by far the most thorough and easily applied information on enzymes I have found. The author makes wild curative claims for enzymes and I can verify she is only stating facts!

Maybe find in a library? It's worth the time to seek this out for a sane price. Anyway, I fell in love with the wisdom in this book! Great ideas on the value of being neutral in life. And much more. (Also I suggest reading Paul Twitchell's The Flute of God - to add spiritual depth to Dethlefsen. Twitchell was a true and "revellationary" writer.)

Finally, A book that speaks the truth!

Review Date: 2003-11-06
As a doctor of chiropractic I get a chance to listen to every excuse, as to why we hurt, or why our bodies have boken down. This book goes beyond the excuses, and give us a chance to face the truth as to why we are broken. However, most people do not want to hear the truth, and will blame everything from the foods that they eat to their computer, and everything in between. In reality, we really need to look inside, and give our symptoms a chance to tell the real story without sugar coating the truth. I know on many levels that this book will challange the reader in many ways, and I commend the author for his bravery to go were most will shy away. In closing I just want to thank the authors for truly a great piece of challenging work. Dr. Robert

A Practical Application of "The Challenge of Fate"
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-14
Wow, such an amazing book. If anyone has read "The Challenge of Fate" before this, then I am sure you noticed how perfectly this book compliments the first. While "Fate" challenged you with groundbreaking theory, this new book actually takes some theory from "Challenge" and spends an entire book, in great detail, explaining how, we must awaken from the world of duality to accomplish something concrete as "health".
This book is almost a scientific approach to Zen Buddhism. I am also reading "Dropping Ashes on the Buddha" and these two books seem to match exactly. While zen attempts to deal with the problem of duality in ritualistic fashion, Dethlefsen and Dahlke go into scientific analogies to show the existence of dualism and it's impact upon our lives. Plus, how to move beyond it. Beyond a world of light/dark, male/female, fast/slow, cold/hot, etc. etc. Basically, this book is a practical application of the fundamental concepts of zen buddhism. The more of our nature we deny, the more builds up on other levels that ultimately spill over onto the physical plane and thus "cause" disease.
This book is a MUST read for anyone who questions exactly "why" things are, the way they are. It will soon become apparent that the answers are correct, we are simply asking the wrong questions.

Now I don't need to write my book anymore. It is already written, and probably much better...
Rather than blocking or destroying illness, we can learn from it. Paradoxical, yes. Give a minute of your thoughts to this affirmation. Our body is just showing us the way we were unable to follow in our free consciousness. Learn from your illness, then your illness becomes useless and fades away. Illness represents the last opportunity for evolution. Whatever you do for healing, pay simultaneous attention to the only true healing. Take the challenge!

Objective View Of Mulitple Healing Modalities
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-04
Dr. Weil presents an objective view of many healing modalities that may be familar to most Americans. He includes allopathic (traditional Western) medicine, homeopathic, naturopathic, osteopathic, and chiropractic paths; acupunction, holistic medicine, shamanism/mind cures/faith healing, and psychic healing. He not only presents assets and disadvantages of each modality, but also presents some theories on why any course of treatment works. He explores the role of faith and the patient's belief in the treatment as a positive contributor to the effectiveness of the treatment. He describes the "placebo effect", where people are cured of illness by drugs that have no biological affect on the illness. He discusses the origins and effectiveness of pharmeceutical drugs and narcotics.

Dr. Weil's questioning leads the reader to also question his/her own role in healing and in making appropriate choices in health care. His treatise does not entirely put down allopathic or alternative medicine, but does put each in its place so the reader is left with a sense of responsibility. It is up to us to decide what we, as persons seeking health, need in terms of treatment and what will choose to place our faith in.

This book was required reading in my college microbiology class. I've kept it ever since and I have read it several times more. I've also given this book as a gift. It will really open your mind to several types of alternative medicine. The fact that this was written by a "traditional" M.D. brings a bit more legitimacy to the various disciplines of medicine.

I have known and a been friend and colleague with Dr. Weil, so I am biased. But when I read this book when it was first released in the 1980's I couldn't put it down. And I find myself returning to it often and recommending it to my patients that are new to integrative medical approaches. In this book, Dr. Weil shares his wealth of personal experience and professional wisdom which tells the story and history which led to the even greater of his works to follow. I do not miss anything he writes, but this one is especially favorite for the information about the history of the world's journey for health and healing.

This book is just amazing. Unless you have read this book, you have absolutely no idea to which extent light and more generally electromagnetic radiation influences our health and our life. If the knowlegde contained inside the pages of this book would be spread more widely, mankind would make vast improvements.

This book belongs in a list of books that are all written by pioneers in their particular field of study, and that would have huge implications if more people would have read them.

Do you want to be in control of your life? Do you want to understand, prevent and cure disease? Do you want to feel great not just physically, but mentally as well? Do you want to stop losing loved ones because of terrible diseases? Then read the following books: 'Nutrition And Physical Degeneration' by Weston A. Price, 'Enzyme Nutrition' by Edward Howell, 'The Truth About Children's Health' by Robert Bernardini, 'The Body Electric' by Robert Becker and 'Health And Light' by John Ott. If you have read these books, you will know much more about health than every doctor or scientist, but you will also have a much better understanding of industry, politics and society in general. Above all, you will have the power to change things for the better.

John Nash Ott in his breakthrough book warns of the dangers of the overuse and under-regulation of modern electromagnetic technology. He also discusses the negative effects of digital watches, certain man made fibers such as polyester and vinyl, ionizing-type smoke detectors, certain types of fluorescent lighting, video display terminals, electronic fetal monitoring equipment in hospitals, and other high technology items. The book has easy-to-do demonstrations showing the relationship of colored lighting and the positive and negative effects that it can create. He links light, color and health.

My Godmother from Germany bought a tea from this book called:" Small flowered Willowrose" - I drank this tea for many months to come and I am cured because of it. I have not had the pleasure of meeting Merrily Kuhn, but I have met David Winston on a few occasions and will say that this book is a treasure. Concise, but detailed it contains explanations and information on current use, traditional use, nutritional ingredients, bio-chemical constituents, dosage and administration, preparation, toxicity, contraindications, side effects, long-term safety, pregnancy/childhood risk, special notes, and references for most herbs and nutrients in use today. It does assume a knowledge of bio-chemistry for constituents, but it is not necessary to use since every constituents is listed with its action if known. I would consider this a necessary addition to any herbal/nutritional/naturopathic study program as it has been a valuable aid in my own understanding and study for my Doctorate in Naturopathy. This book gives a simple, but solid foundation (especially with the bibliography) that can help to give scientific roots to the wonderful healing art of herbalism and deepen anyone's knowledge who wishes to further their study of herbs.
