Great technical information, can be intense

This book was required reading at the Brian Utting School of Massage when I attended in 1994. The ENTIRE book, and we were tested on it.

I still refer back to the chapter on muscle physiology frequently, especially when I am writing articles and teaching procedures.

Here is where you will find what you need to know about how actin and myosin overlap, how muscle cells respond only to the signals provided from the brain and spinal reflexes (which means your only hope of relaxing muscle is by appealing to the brain or reflexes, using indirect techniques!)

Here you will learn which spinal reflexes cause the "let go" reflex (golgi tendon organs) and which proprioceptors (annulospiral) communicate two-way with the brain for profound accuracy of movement and options for subtle therapy.

Here you learn what organ (cerebellum) controls whether the muscles will rest or guard.

I have not yet seen a book to replace this one as a required text, but I am reviewing one soon... I think a massage therapist could get away with reading only the muscle chapter though the skin, connective tissue, parasympathetic response vs sympathetic reaction, nerve chapters are interesting if you are interested (like I was). Remember, this information is about twenty years old now.

In addition, I recommend all massage students and practitioners read Laura Bruno's If I Only Had a Brain Injury that came out earlier this year, 2008. It is far easier to read than Job's Body. It is not intended to be a "med school" approach to healing. Instead, you'll learn a symbolic/intuitive approach to healing. In the 80s, intuition was woo-woo but now with human telepathy predicted to begin in less than a decade, you see that Laura's symbolic/intuitive approach to the brain is even more subtle and effective than the connective tissue, indirect nerve/reflex techniques that Deane Juhan was doing back then.

If you are a doctor, physical therapist, massage or bodywork therapist of any kind with an appetite for in depth analysis and understanding of the human response to touch, this book is a MUST HAVE for you. It's technical and detailed, and it is also ground breaking, eye-opening and very exciting.

Juhan covers the topic of the human response to touch from the micro-cellular level through to system responses all the way to the origins of the body/mind split in western philosphy and the consequences of pharmaceutical dominance in health care on touch therapies. He introduces many new perspectives that bring a rich vitality to anatomy. He shows the interactivity - the interconnectedness - the interdependence of all aspects of the human body, mind and being. He presents some of the latest theories about how the body mind are integrated and communicate - Candace Pert's molecules of emotion.

Not only is Juhan's research fascinating and valuable to body workers, but also his method of inquiry, the questions he asks, and how he asks and seeks to answer them, are also very educational - modeling ways we can pursue the investigation ourselves.

Here are a few examples of the kind of insight that Juhan offers in the Third Edition:

Page 17

"This personal, sensory engagement with the self does not spring from a rebellion against scientific authority, but rather from a realization of the present inadequacy of that authority's conception of reality, a realization that is not contrived for the purpose of debate, but which is forced upon [us] by [our] own painful circumstances."

"When the conceptions of reality that we maintain do not square with the things we are experiencing, it is not because we are flawed or because our experiences are wrong, but because our conceptions cannot contain all of the facts as we perceive them. And there is no constructive way out of this crisis but to enlarge our sense of reality to include our actual experiences."

Page 142

"The goal of bodywork should not be to impose universalized standards of posture and movement upon an individual, but rather to help the individual to cultivate the mental awareness and the physical flexibility to continually adapt to the changing needs of the moment."

Page 184

"Muscles that have fallen into disuse and flaccidity just don't provide enough pumping action for these intercellular fluids to adequately feed and bathe the nerve cells, and so the general strength of their functions is diminished."

Page 412

"Subjective and objective are not two distinct ways I have of viewing reality; they are two sides of a continuous feedback loop which together make up that reality. How completely I sense my body and how I feel about it has everything to do with the particular course of events going on within it."

I am so enthralled with this book. I'm using it as a text book...taking notes, etc. I got into medicine because I don't only want to know "what" but, also "why". This book brings phytotherapy and mainstream American medicine together and makes herbalism make sense to a practitioner of pharmaceuticals... I love this book!!

I purchased this book for two reasons. The first being the author David Hoffmann is the author of a book I have called The New Holistic Herbal. I found this book to very thorough in his relating herbal medicine to the human body. I highly recommend it. The second reason is I am taking an online course in Herbal Medicine. This book is recommended reading and I can say it is as thorough and detailed as the book mentioned above. David Hoffmann has a way of relating the science to the human body in a precise, well thought out way. There is a wealth of information and detail about all functions of the human body. How each herb is broken down into its components and what their interaction is with our makeup. He also can tell of drug interactions which is important for anyone on medication and wanting to self medicate. I can only speak highly of this book and while perhaps a little clinical for some it is well worth the purchase.

The Garretts pull from their experieces from the "real world," as well as their healings and practical experience with the Cherokee to give us excellent starting points in helping ourselves and others. For such a thin book, there is a lot of advice hidden in the stories and accounts, if you know what to look for.

If you are enjoying perfect health then this book is even MORE important for you (Remember...Prevention is better than cure). I dont have any health issues ...thank god...and it is my passion to read and develop my skills as a therapist and a life coach. The best thing i liked about this book is that its very "hands on" and i learned something here that i can readily apply with happy results. Very few PhDs these days offer everything out on a plate and most try to lure you to their seminar or practice through their books. It looks like Dr. Levy has a big heart and he doesn't believe in keeping anything from the reader and wants to help him or her too fully. I really found this book worth every cent. Enjoy it.... God Bless you Dr. Levy :-)

After a 16 foot fall from a ladder and a broken ankle and leg I found Dr. Levy's book to be an amazing self healing tool. Obviously I needed surgery to get put back together but Levy's book gave me unknown insights into how to use my own healing powers to speed my recovery. The meditation he teaches is also extremely helpful not just for healing injuries but for my overall well being and making good life decisions.

My wife and I found this book while browsing in a local bookstore. I started to read it and prucahsed it and brought it home. This is a very useful, practical and easy to understanb book. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. I have done healing with my hands in the past but Dr. Levy's instructions and methods have greatly increased my abilities. Both my wife and I are very happy that Dr. Levy has written this book. Not only does he explain how to do the exercises he also explains why they work. This book has indeed been a great asset and addition to our abilities and health. If Dr. Levy should ever come to lecture in our area we will be among the first to go. For those who are serious about improving their health, this is a must book. You will have work conciously and continuosly as you go through the book to obtain the full benefits.

Read this and you will never be the same again! Unlike anything else I have ever read, the Oversoul 7 trilogy stands alone, and in my top 5 books of all time. Cosmic truths presented in fictional format, but NOT cheesy or contrived like most 'New Age fiction.' You know what I mean - those books that have a story just to provide an excuse for New Age preaching. blech. It's great when it works, but it rarely works. Well this time it works! Jane Roberts pulls it off, and pulls it off quite well!

Read Oversoul and your dreams will come alive. You will look at every sunflake with new appreciation. Your sense of time and space will be forever altered. You will grasp at last the paradox of nonlinear time (ie, 'time travel'). You will meet unforgettable characters and remember them fondly many years later (the hallmark of a great book). And, you'll have fun reading it.

The whole idea of all time being simultaneous is so clear. Made me wonder if we aren't all just someone's oversoul!

This is a must-have item. It is an incredible beautiful book. If you are a pethead, you must have it. But, if you will buy this item, you must have in mind that is a catalogue of items, pictures and comments, the name is literal, not a book as "PSB vs America" or "Literally".

With 14 reviews already written, I doubt I can say anything that hasn't already been said. But I will give a short review of my impression of Catalogue.

This book is more like Pet Shop Boys history in pictures. While it's true this is a catalogue of all the album and CD covers. It is also the history of Pet Shop Boys in a brief chronology near the back of the book. It gives a time line of what they were doing on particular dates.

There's also an interview from April 2006 with Neil and Chris by Chris Heath. It also includes a complete in depth discography of all their singles and albums they released.

The silver cover of the book makes a great coffee table attraction. It's a must for any Pethead's collection. It's also a great reference book for new fans of the boys. For those who never subscribed to the fan club will enjoy looking at the various Christmas Cards and cover art of the fan club magazine Literally.

I purchased multiple copies so I could have one on display and to thumb through and one is kept sealed. At this great price, who could resist?

You can easily forget that Chris and Neil, Pet Shop Boys have been making fantastic music together for close to 30 years now. This large volume is an authoritative visual representation of what the PSB have done throughout their career. If there is one problem (not really) it would be that since they Boys are still active, the book will be outdated nearly immediately following its publication.

Its fun to see all the international releases, versions, one-off items that have come from their musical output, from singles to albums to videos to other books. Catalogue is comprehensive to say the least. And the photos are many, and all relatively great quality.

This is a true gift to the real PSB fans. It is sort of like your own personal scrapbook if you've been following the Boys through the years or a wonderful collection to introduce newer fans to the career that Neil and Chris have enjoyed. Price seems more than reasonable for the quality of the book. The cover is stunning and makes a great conversation piece for your coffee table. It just sort of begs to be opened with its silvery cover image.

Pet Shop Boys fans should be thrilled that such a volume exists and that the artists have seen fit to offer something of this scale. So many bands, defunct or ongoing seem to spurn their fans requests for such items. In this case, no matter what the intent of the artist--whether purely self indulgence or wanting to give back, the fans who purchase this book are the winners.

Love this book. Love the Boys. And most importantly, Love the music they continue to release. Left to your own devices, you probably will buy this book.

One of the most real and grounding books I have ever read. It can quiet any raging storm. It certainly quieted mine. I have owned this book for years, and everytime that I read it, it's like reading it for the very first time. It is always new. And I am one to rarely read the same book over and over and over. You really do get it when you read this book. Every word resonates with my soul. I am at a point in my life, and am having experiences that are making me really assimilate the truths presented in the book as the way to do this life while on earth. So simple, yet power beyond any earthly measure that I've come across. It has replaced my need for a therapist and other things recommended for controlling anxiety and depression. I am now able to let go and trust in what I've always known to be true. If you purchase the book, you are giving yourself and the planet, because we will all benefit, a great gift.

Pat Sullivan's excellent account of his chronic illnesses, and how he went about learning the causes of each one, is a fascinating look into how one person's search for the truth can improve their own health and well-being. His writing is straightforward, readable and well-referenced. I especially enjoyed the chapters on nutrition and the dangers of mercury. While many of his approaches are somewhat alternative in nature, Sullivan is careful to maintain a balanced tone throughout this thoughtful and interesting book. The lessons shared here can no doubt help those of us who are looking for similar answers about how to live a healthier, happier life

Illness: One cause, one Solution - Exposing the Truth
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-15
As a fellow chronic sufferer, with much the same story of undiagnoses by the medical establishment and ineffective treatments or incomplete results by the alternative field, this book reveals the Truth that heavy metals and/or negative organisms are behind every chronic disease and what SEEMS a temporary ache and pain that builds momentum into the pits of hell.

Pat outlines the details of his tedious labors, uncovering why he continued to stay sick. Take special note of his message: until you erradicate the offending agent, supplements will have limited results, if any, as in my case and many others, and the liver doesn't know the difference between Prozac and Heroin. All metals are poison. Heart attack? Diabetes? Parkinsons? AIDS? All symptoms.

Pat gives much insight into what HAS helped him mitigate against the toxic load on the body while he was searching for the answer, and breaks down the list of myths that will be encountered in the healing fields, when enough time is spent hunting down the tiger. He also outlines what hasn't been effective to which I also concur in my own experience.

Wellness Piece by Piece is easy to read, hard to put down, and helps to reinforce you can get well when all seems hopeless.

Knowing metals may not even show up on a challenge test until you are chelating for a few months, the word out there by other chronic sufferers, is chelate anyway. The results [or lack thereof] will be revealed soon enough. Pat's book reveals what chelating agents are NOT effective, and with DMSA now available without prescription, anyone can start accomplishing results.

Disease doesn't appear overnight. This book is a must read for chronic sufferers and those who never want to get sick and who have probably already started the disease process and don't even know it! You can also find this book on Pat's Jigsaw Health website.

Thanks, Pat, for getting the word out. With enough available knowledge, people can stop the abuse of medical and health "care" and discover the answer lies in those who have come before them.

I was disappointed and irked by The Wise Heart. My low rating comes from three sources: (1) Format (2) Content and (3) Peeves. My critical comments and poor rating come with hesitation because I have a a sincere appreciation of Jack Kornfield's work. I hope this book will be re-written.

(1) Format. I have been fortunate to attend many Monday nights of Jack's dharma talks at Spirit Rock, and his powers as a presenter are unmatched. Unfortunately, the formula in this book fails to deliver the sub- title's promise "A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology." The sections start with several quotes, next a vague notion ("So does mindfulness open us to that which is unseen in our experience" p. 97) followed by an intense story with a happy ending ("With mindfulness Peter found relief" p. 98) and ending up with a sweeping generality ("Since 1980 nearly a thousand scientific papers have documented the effectiveness of mindfulness, often studying Western trainings that are based on a Buddhist approach." p. 99). The therapy stories are too numerous, I come away from this book completely befuddled.

(2) Content. The notion of inner radiance or beauty as each human's intrinsic nature isn't an idea that is accepted by many followers of Theraveda or Zen Buddhism. I am finding that once you read the original texts not Western commentary, the Buddha is circumspect about settling any metaphysical debates, in Nikaya's translation of the Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha in the Aggivacchagotta Sutta on p. 590 for example, the Buddha refuses to settle a long sting of metaphysical debates in his discussion with the wanderer Vacchagotta. The 26 principles throughout the book are internally contradictory, and not universally accepted by Buddhists.

(3) Peeves. Authors that provide "early praise" for this book on the back cover have most of their books listed in the Related Documents section. Perhaps it isn't quid pro quo, but I find it really irritating to have the extraordinary claim that "Two thousand years before Freud and Jung's probed the unconscious, Buddhist psychology taught about the unconscious foundation of human behavior" on pg. 151 without providing the title and translating author of the book containing the Fifty Verses on the Nature of Unconscious in the in the Related Documents section. This book has hundreds of quotes, and there are no footnotes to check how the quotes mold the content. You can't check whether the quotes are taken out of context, or if the quote comes from a early inaccurate translation. Also, there are well intentioned but sloppy stereotypes, for example, the dubious stereotype "This is evident in the healthy, caring bond between parents and children in Buddhist countries." p. 187. Or, what I find most irritating of all, what I can only describe as sophistry via oxymoron baiting: this is the use of objective terms to modify subjective experiences to further the current self-help fad promoting Buddhism as a scientific not religious activity. So, we have the "technology of visualization" p. 277 "science of mind" p.xi, and "particle-like aspect of consciousness" p.39.

I enjoy, savor and collect almost every book by Thich Nhat Hahn,Ajahn Chah and others and this one goes right into the realm of Gem.The wisdom of Ajahn Chah(from "Food for the Heart",Everything arises,Everything falls away,Being Dharma, and A still forest pool,All highly recommended)is made easier to understand. The Structure of the book and contents is perfect.I read this one chapter and sometimes one section of a chapter at a time, realizing this is the best it gets with these kind of books.A perfect gift and I will give it away and reread when paperback comes out.I like to do that with Gems.Im doing that now with The Joy of Living(Yongey Rinpoche). This book is an excellent summary of all teachings of the Mind Science,Buddhism.

As anyone who has heard Jack Kornfield speak or has read his previous books (e.g., A Path With Heart) knows, Jack is a wonderful storyteller who uses his beautifully touching stories to teach us the most profound truths about life. Any reader of The Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology will not be disappointed.

Fifteen years after having written A Path With Heart, Jack's story telling abilities have not diminished--and he has new stories to tell. In addition, he clearly enunciates 26 principles of Buddhist psychology; moreover, as other outstanding teachers of psychotherapy have noted (including not only therapists with a solution-oriented bent, but also such psychoanalysts as Allen Wheelis and Herbert J. Schlesinger--e.g., see Endings and Beginnings: On Terminating Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis), he reminds us that psychotherapy is not just about understanding but is also about action. In contrast with much of Western psychology, however, which has primarily focused on the contents of consciousness, "on what we think about," he points out that Buddhist psychology focuses on how we think, on our mental states themselves. In line with that orientation, at the end of each chapter, he offers a specific practice to help us shift from unhealthy states of mind to healthy ones, thus making it possible to turn theory into a living reality.

The Wise Heart is an outstanding book, worthy of being not only read but also chewed and digested.

This is an exceptionally intelligent, well-written and useful book. Based on Buddhist principals, it lays out a way of looking at the world and wisely becoming an integrated, constructive, comfortable member of it. It is generous and compassionate and anecdotal enough to show how its applications can enhance one's life. It's contrast of Buddhist psychology and Western psychology is extremely interesting and explains how the Eastern view gives more room for one to use already present internal mechanisms for healing. I recommend it highly.

Love, Medicine and Miracles: Lessons Learned about Self-Healing from a Surgeon's Experience with Exceptional Patients
Meditations for Enhancing Your Immune System
After having read Bernie Siegel, I wanted to hear him and I did. I was very pleased with his meditations. But I wanted to explore further.
I found Dr Goodman to be the answer. She is factual and a real person. She describes how she used to teach self-healing to others and then got cancer. She thought this was a joke. From within, she panicked. She then tried her own method and got rid of the cancer, only it returned. In fact, it returned three times. It is only then that she did some deep work to uncover the reasons why this cancer was re-occurring. Doctors told her that if she was not following the normal medical way she would die.
And here came her answer to her quest. She found that she had a core destructive belief that she got as a little child listening to her father's prayer "Thank God I am not a woman"
Thanks to this, she transformed her toxic attitudes to positive ones.

Her book is not only the story of how she was healed of cancer, but also the full detail of a refined method to heal cancer and other diseases. She is fully humane, never condescending or patronizing. She knows because she has gone through the fears, and she came out victorious. With warmth and enthusiasm she goes into full details of her method. You can apply it straight away.

Healing is a decision. It is a choice. If, like me, you are affected with a disease that troubles your life, this warm book is a boon. It does work. I have started to do the deep work of exploration. It is fascinating how the body responds to positive affirmations. This is not a glib answer to patch a plaster on a wooden leg. This work is intense, emotional, sometimes painful. But the hope that blooms in you with results that bud into reality, that is very convincing.
This book is also for people who have a chronic disease and the doctor keeps you "ticking" without much improvement. This book will relieve you.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this book.. It has truely changed my life. Not only is it uplifting and encouraging, it works! I started to notice small changes in little ways and slowly started to really believe. At a time when you feel overwhelmed & scared because of a doctors diagnosis, this book gave me hope, the beginning of all i needed turn it around. I'd recommend it highly.

This book is chock full of meditations for self-healing, no matter what the disease or complaint. The premise of this book is the mind-body connection, that we are ultimately responsible for our own state of health.

Shivani's writing style is easy to read, as if you were chatting comfortably with a good friend. I have tweaked my daily meditation sessions with suggestions found in this book. I wish Amazon sold Shivani Goodman's audio recordings to go along with this book, but this volume is a must-have for those interested in self-healing. You won't be disappointed.
