The kids in my son's fifth grade class were all raving about this book, which was a miracle in itself, so I decided to read it for myself. I have to admit, I've been a big fan of Gina Gershon for a long time and it's hard to imagine her writing a kid's book. What a pleasant surprise! The book is well written, the story is clever, and the dialog is hysterical. The main character, Einstein P. Fleet, is a computer geek turned reluctant hero who faces the challenges of a monster theme camp run by aliens with a great sense of purpose and humor. My son has turned me on to a lot of new experiences --- reading Camp Creepy Time was one of them. Looking forward to the sequel.

Einstein P. Fleet has already logged hundreds of hours trying to blow the whistle on baddies. Through his popular blog, The Smoking Peashooter, Einstein manages to spread the word on all sorts of conspiracy theories, and he's even had a lawsuit pending against him since the fourth grade, all thanks to "The Wilson Incident."

Naturally, he questions his parents' motives for sending him to a remote summer camp for eight agonizing weeks, with no Internet access and a limited supply of Twinkies. From the moment he steps on the bus and sees every other camper in a monster costume, Einstein worries that perhaps this particular camp may be much more difficult to deal with than any normal one would be.

Unfortunately for him and his unsuspecting parents, his fears are well-founded...

Chock full of werewolves, vampires, mummies, giant spiders, and greedy mobster aliens, this book provides the same brand of entertainment as a classically cheesy monster film. Highly recommended for reluctant readers.

I got this book as a present and really had fun reading it. So much so, I ran out and bought 3 books, one for each of my nieces and nephews, ages 8-13. They loved it! We all had fun talking about the adventures of Einstein and his cohort. My 11-year-old niece really loved Roxie and has decided she wants to be an alien spy. I would recommend this book for anyone. We are all looking forward to the movie version to come out.

Every once in a while you come across a book that makes you laugh out loud. Camp Creepy Time is one of them. The main character, Einstein P. Fleet, is a lovable thirteen year old computer geek. You know, the kind of kid that rarely sees the light of day. His parents send him packing off to a monster theme camp smack dab in the middle of the Mojave Desert for the summer ---- which turns out to be merely a stop over on the way to being abducted and sold to an intergalactic monster zoo in another galaxy. The story mixes all types of elements from the science fiction genre and somehow manages to glue them into a cohesive, original plot. It's also funny and very well written, especially for a pair of first time authors. The book ends leaving the door open for a sequel, which I can't wait to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humor. You will be pleasantly surprised.

VERY CREEPY (and funny)!!!

You simply can't go wrong with this wacky zany summer send-up. Einstein P. Fleet, a loner-nerd trapped at a hellish summer camp in the Mojave Desert, leads us through a wild storyline of escape, with monster costumes, vampires, werewolves and aliens all in the mix.

This fast-paced, well-written farce is a quick, irreverent, hilarious read for kids and adult-kids. Highly recommended. It's no surprise that Dreamworks has this story in script development....Can't wait for the movie!

Who has not been to summer camp, even if only for a day? And as an adult, who has not sat in his or her industrial beige/grey cubicle on a clear, beautiful summer day and wished they were once again that carefree youngster jumping into a frigid lake or pounding initials into a piece of leather?

Josh Wolk, a senior writer for Entertainment Weekly, decided to spend part of the summer before his wedding doing just that. He returned to his old haunt as a counselor, hoping to find his boyhood before stepping solidly into adulthood. His lighthearted look at the goings on at camp will keep you laughing. But, just as in life, all is not high-jinks and pratfalls. He is looking back at this from the perspective of twenty years beyond most of the people there. But he gives even the serious stuff a humorous edge.

If you've ever been to summer camp, or even if you haven't, you'll enjoy this book. It's both funny and nostalgic, a perfect blend of entertainment. So grab your gorp and bug juice and come along for the ride. You'll be glad you did.

I am never at all sure why I like reading camp books. I hated the actual camp experience, due to overwhelming homesickness and general dislike of being in groups! But I love reading about camp, and this is probably the best book about it I've ever read. Josh Wolk spends the summer before getting married working as a counselor at the camp he attended for many summers as a boy. The best part of this book is that it really doesn't romantize the experience. Josh feels like a misfit much of the time, the 14 year old boys in his cabin can be very, very hard to deal with, the other counselor in the cabin doesn't pull his weight at all...but still, he has many moments of remembering what he loves about the camp. It sounds like a great camp. I have 13 and 10 year old boys, and I wish now that overnight camp wasn't out of our price range, as it sounds like it could be a wonderful experience.

I hope Wolk writes more books. I'd love to hear about his life as a parent, as he seems like someone with real insights.

A must read for former campers and counselors

Even though it's been 35 years since the first time I was a counselor, every year around Fathers Day I have the urge to grab my sleeping bag and head up to camp for staff orientation. This book reminded me of why that urge is still so strong - why I spent six summers of my life as summer camp staff, working 14 hours a day most days and making less than I could have working a virtually anywhere else.

In the summer before he married and entered a new phase of life, the author chose to relive part of his childhood by becoming a camp counselor at the same camp he'd attended as an adolescent. Although older than the typical counselor and with a fiance waiting at home for him to finish his adventure, the authors experiences of feeling like he didn't quite fit in with the staff, his struggles with trying to stay upbeat after weeks of little sleep and hard physicial work and the silliness he shared with his campers mirror the experience of every counselor, whatever age. His story rang so true - although I worked at two coed YMCA camps rather than an all boys camp, the songs, jokes, activities and adolescent angst are universal.

For those who were campers, it's a window into the mysterious life that counselors led. For those of us who staffed camps, it's a sometimes funny, sometimes touching reminder of why we chose spend our summers without creature comforts of home, making little money while living with other people's children.

Threshold apprehension.

I take that title from a Frank Black song, which I think is a pretty accurate way of describing the nervous step you take into full-fledged adulthood. "Cabin Pressure" details Josh Wolk's step.

I first took notice of Wolk through his terrific writing at "Entertainment Weekly." He wrote day-after commentary on the "Real World" that was so gut-bustingly hilarious my friends and I used to E-mail the highlights to each other. After a while, the writing was so good and the show so bad, we stopped watching the show and just read the wrap-ups.

Wolk's best skill as a writer is his gift of observation. Give him any scenario and he can instantly break it down, expose each player's motivation, and end it all with a hilarious analogy.

He brings that keen observation to "Cabin Pressure," his tale of heading back to camp as a counselor on the brink of his wedding day. Having remembered camp as a kind of innocent oasis, Josh wants to reexperience it one more time before he becomes, gulp, a husband and a father.

Wolk fills us in on summer-camp life -- what he remembered from his day, what has changed, and what hasn't. The best part of the book is Wolk's interaction with the kids in his cabin. He does an amazing job of letting you know each one, whether they are charming, maddening, or depressingly and prematurely stressed-out and miserable.

I don't necessarily think I bought into Josh's overall theme here -- this whole nostalgic innocence trip -- but it doesn't matter because "Cabin Pressure" is often hilarious and reading this book is like a well-spoken, really funny friend telling you his best summer-camp stories.

The tone can shift from body-odor humor to some strong emotional connections with the boys, and all the while Wolk's razor-sharp observation and pitch-perfect punchlines remain.

After reading Wolk in "Entertainment Weekly" all those years, and laughing my butt off, this book lives up to all of my expectations. Funny and insightful, "Cabin Pressure" is a wonderful debut book.

I went to a camp in the Pocanoes for 12 years, my daughter now goes to this very same camp! 90 years!! This summer, while spending a week with other alum from my camp, "Sleepaway" was recommended to me. This book, from cover to cover, perfectly summed up all our camp experiences. There are many, many pictues of campers all the way back to the early 1900's...very neat to see what camps looked like back then! We were excited to see our camp in there!

This is a really helpful book for preparing for summer camp. Here's a tip I got from a friend: if you buy it through acabookstore.org (ACA = American Camping Association) then it comes with a DVD-CD set. My son, who's pretty anxious about going to camp, watched the DVD and that really helped turn his anxiety into excitement. The book and DVD give great tips on preparing (packing, etc.) for camp, but also gives great insight on how to approach the camp experience. Together they answered a lot of questions I didn't even know to ask. It's one of those things you can't afford not to get.

I wish I had found this book a year earlier!

This book really covers what you need to know before you send your child to sleepaway camp. The part that was most helpful to me was the research the authors have done on homesickness. Before I got this book I was guessing about how to handle my daughter's homesickness, and I came up with one or two of their recommendations. But after I read this book I felt I understood how to handle this with my daughter and also what the camp and counselors can do to help. There's a great list of all the things you can do. And everything the authors said rings true with my experience.

It's well written, easy to follow, and has parts written just for kids to read. There's even a section to tell kids how to get the most out of camp - from general guidelines on how to treat others to good advice on how to deal with living with lots of kids in a small space.

Every parent, camper, counselor and camp director should read this book! Parents will have a more relaxing time while their kids are away, campers will know better what to expect and how to have the most fun, counselors will know better what to do, and camp directors will have fewer problems with kids AND parents.

It has everything!

The best thing about this book was that it was so helpful to both me and my daughter when it came time to start preparing for her first stay at summer camp. We relied on the suggested internet search engines in the book to find the camps and used the section on co-ed vs. single-sex camps to come to a conclusion that my daughter and I(!) were comfortable with. I've already spread the word about this book to all the parents I know that are thinking about sending their kids off to camp. Every parent will feel better once they've read the homesickness section.

I bought Chris Thurber's book on Friday, and watched him on NBC's Today Show this morning (June 9, 2003). Seeing him in person confirms what I thought: he is a camping expert with a wealth of helpful information for parents and kids alike. I feel so much better sending my son to camp knowing that Chris and Jon's research has helped us prepare in a way that will maximize the fun and minimize the homesickness at camp. Buying this book is a small investment in a positive experience whose benefits, I am sure, will last a lifetime. (I found the perfect camp for my son by visiting the American Camping Association's web page: acacamps.org.)

Molly Saves The Day

In 1944 during World War 2, loved ones were away fighting the war, gas was rationed and families couldn't travel far. They saved their gas for necessary trips. Families couldn't even see their relatives during the holidays.

In 1944-1945 it was common for parents to send their children to camp in the summer. The children could get away from the stress of everyday life, and enjoy the outdoors.

Molly and her friends Linda and Susan are very excited to go to camp Go-on-again. They have many challenges to learn at camp. Molly finds that she is very afraid of swimming underwater. Susan is having difficulty paddling a canoe. And Linda is afraid of bugs. When the camp girls are divided into teams and challenged to capture the flag, Susan and Molly are placed in a canoe together. Susan has difficulty rowing and she loses her ore, when both girls reach for the ore, the canoe tips over, causing the girls to dunk under water.

Molly and Susan reach shore only to find that their whole team has been captured by the other team and the jailer is their own best friend, Linda.

Will Molly and Susan get away? Will Linda capture her own best friends? How can Molly and Susan rescue their whole team? Will the girls ever be able to resume their friendship?

My daughter Karen enjoyed dressing her Molly doll in her camp Go-on-again outfit with a white blouse, red shorts and a blue neck scarf.

Of all the American Girls, Molly's our favorite and Molly Saves the Day our favorite Molly book. My six year old recognized that Molly, Linda and Susan, while away together at sleep-away camp, each had fears that they were forced to try to overcome. Molly is a very well-rounded character, and the fact that she is somewhat overly competitive (this shows up clearly during the camp color-wars) only makes her more realistic. She is nonetheless very likeable. Beyond Molly's character, however, my daughter simply found the book very exciting.

Molly returns in "Molly Saves The Day" as an enthusiastic ten-year-old headed off to summer camp for the first time ever. Along with her best friends Linda and Susan, Molly enjoys meeting the challenges of camp. Well, almost all of them- Molly is afraid of swimming underwater after she fell off the dock during a swimming lesson. In the final days of camp, the counsellors organize a game of Capture the Flag, which pits Molly and Susan against Linda in an all-out battle. Molly's team's plan backfires and leaves Molly and Susan to save their team from losing the game. But to win, will Molly and Susan have to betray their best friend?

I liked this book because it was fast-paced with a good dose of adventure while retaining realistic content. Molly is, as always, lively and lovable and I really enjoyed this installment of her series. I highly recommend this book to any fans of WWII historical fiction or the Molly series.

I first read this book, when I was about 10, 11 or 12. I was hooked on the Saddle Club at 9 and even now, at 15, still find myself returning to them occasionally. I have read 'Summer Horse' and 'Summer Rider' countless times, and still go back for more! I found Stevie's determination to save the camp, Carole's lesson in adapting to suit her horse and Lisa's dedication to her school work an inspiration (although this was not necessarily how it was intended). This is an exciting book and a most memorable one! I borrowed my user name from it! I used to read the books non-stop, and although I never read the entire series, I wanted more than anything to be a part of the Saddle Club - I still do really. Hehe. Anyway - READ THIS BOOK!!!!

Le Café de Cadix by Pierrette Lili Camps

This was a very interesting book. The time frame begins around World War II and comes to the current period. The author vividly describes her life in Algiers. Although many times it is difficult to do in a biographical sketch, the author makes her characters come alive for the reader. As you read though the book you soon become one with it. Too often we have forgotten where we come from, I am thankful that Pierrette has not. You find yourself sitting in the café viewing what's going on. You see the people as they struggle to continue their lives amidst the confusion that war brings. You see Pierette grow up before your eyes and fall in love. You see her brother set out on the course that takes him to France.
One of the great things, about the book, is the acceptance of people. You see people of different nationalities, different religious backgrounds and class levels living in harmony until the war changes things. You see them all be forced from that lifestyle to something different. You feel the heartache and the joy as you follow them through the author's eyes.
Sharing with the author, I discovered that she left out many horrors from this autobiography that she experienced because of the tremendous sadness it brought back to her.
I would recommend this book to anyone, on any reading level, especially if you like historical material. The insight that this book gives the reader is well worth the time it takes to read it.

`LeCAFE de CADIX' is an autobiography, travel guide, history and prophecy all wrapped up in one fascinating book. It is an alluring account of a family caught up in the tribulations of trying to survive during the years before and after the French exodus from Algiers. While one of the last vestiges of colonialism was crumbling, a family manages to salvage their future in a land filled with desperation and despair. They did it with love, humor and unfailing determination as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse stormed through and ravished their land. This close family endured to finally achieve what so many people lost. `LeCafe de Cadix' will live on in the minds of those who are fortunate enough to read this very captivating book. 'LeCafe de Cadix' would make a great movie.

We all need air to breathe, food to eat, the need to feel clothed, secure, and be loved to live, at least to live fully. At different times in Pierrette Lili Camps young life she lacked one or more of these at all times. Most of us have lacked one or another in each of our lifetimes, but possibly not due to drastic causes the way Pier(as she was called) endured.

Just before and during World War II, less goods due to rationing, complicated by the black-market trading by the marketers caused many to go hungry and sent dear Pier to bed crying with hunger.

During air rade warnings the Lili Camps often ran to a tunnel where the townspeople all gathered for safety. On one horrific night, smoke filled the tunnel and in a desperate attempt to escape, Pier held on to her four year old brother as he held tight around her neck until she no longer could hold him and he began to slip from her arms. He held on for his life and they both did escape although she knew the clumps and lumpy things under her feet were not the usual rocks that she walked over before. Later her father told her that fifty people died that night trying to escape the noxious fumes. That was a heart wrenching account as told by Pier.

Pierrette describes many things, the town, its' people, with its' multicultural and ethnicity, her school days, the work in the cafe, Le Cafe de Cadix, owned by her parents, beautiful nurse Rose and Salvador, her handsome dad. She speaks of Germaine her sister, and her twin brothers Denis and Guy.Pier speaks of many with much love and respect, and candidly about others that did not deserve niceties said about them.

She speaks of the American GI's, one in particular ( John Komarek) whom she falls in love with, marries and after much difficulty in getting to America finally manages to get reunited with her love of a lifetime that has thus far lasted 63 years with blessings of five daughters and one son.

This is a remarkable account of a young woman's life whose strength and fortitude was evident from the beginning as a young child. Those qualities with her faith that with God's help she could endure anything is what has made her one of the most intriguing and intelligent women I have ever read about. This is her life story and one she should most certainly be proud to hand down to her descendents.

I recommend this book as an exceptional read for anyone. I feel honored and a "little smarter" by having read this historical account of life during World War II in the Mediterranean town of Bougie, Algiers.

Le Café de Cadix By Pierrette Lili Camps is a delightful book to read and own. This autobiographical book will hold your interest from the first page to it's finish. Written extremely well, filled with humor and warmth you begin to feel that Pierrette is indeed your personal friend. If not, then you wish she were. A woman so filled with humor, good nature and story telling you have a fear the book may end too soon. Many vignettes of the many friends and people who visit Le Café de Cadix. Her voice, in her writing is so clear and distinctive that you almost hear her telling you the story.

The last few chapters brought me to such sadness; I could not stop my tears as she relates details of the end of the Algiers known to her and her family. I admit I was rather ignorant of most of this history.

The way that Bo Savino describes and portrays the use of magic in this novel is a stroke of genius and allows for incredible description! I also enjoyed the way the author incorporated the hurricane season into the plot. It was surprising and not overdone in the least. There are many factors testing the continued existence of Faery-kind throughout the book. It will be very interesting to see if and how the twins, Reggie & Ryssa, do in future books to save or yes, even doom the Faery.

This is a wonderful fantasy book that is based in the modern era. Yes, it appeals to the Harry Potter enthusiast (as stated by the other reviews here), but it is also enjoyable to occasional fantasy readers. I typically read historical fiction and scifi and I have always had a soft spot for scifi juvenile fiction. Reggie & Ryssa is well-written and completely connectible whether you are an adult reader like me, or a teen reader.

Reggie & Ryssa And The Summer Camp Of Faery is a young adult fantasy novel about a pair of twins who, on their thirteenth birthday, discover that the world of Faeries co-exists just beyond the reach and vision of the mundane human world. Furthermore, both twins were once a part of Faery world, and now that an unknown force is dissolving the barrier that separates the worlds, the Faeries want the children back! They must embark upon a magical adventure to restore balance to both worlds and regain control over their destines, in this imaginative and enjoyable novel recommended for fantasy lovers of all ages and backgrounds.

Just when the Potter books were getting to dark for me, here comes a breath of fresh air in the fantasy world of Faery. As the other reviewers stated above, I also caught the, "I can't put the book down" bug. Having lived in Florida since the late 50's and weathered many storms; Bo Savino weaves a tale that had me believing the Land Of Faery truly turns Hurricanes away from Tampa when possible. Considering I am showing my age, this is a testament that Reggie & Ryssa and the Summer Camp of Faery is for all ages.
So Bo, where is the next book? We can't wait!

Delightful & witty...a great book to take you away to another world for just long enough that you'll feel sorry to leave. I can't wait for the next book to revisit the world of Faery...an incredible read for both kids and adults. The first book in a series that left me both satisfied at the ending and yet still wanting more!

Had a very hard time putting Reggie and Ryssa down

Reggie and Ryssa takes you to unfamiliar places in the fantasy world. Bo Savino has a way of writing that just pulls you right into the story line. I am honored to have read Reggie and Ryssa and cannot wait til the 2nd one in the series comes out. Reggie and Ryssa is not only for young adults, but adults as well. I know for a fact that I will read this one again. Also, I will be telling all my friends to get Reggie and Ryssa, so that they can find out what the message and teaching it has.

Luv ya Bo

This is a really helpful book - very much worth the $21.75 price.

The physical book itself is unimpressive (wire bound, etc), but it's what inside that really counts here. We use many of the helpful suggestions regularly. We came across it somewhat by accident, but we're sure glad we did.

There is a lot covered here. In fact, most everything you need to run, or improve a Summer Program....or any non-profit or Child Care program. I think it's all in the way you use it's many helpful hints - those that just read it and toss it aside will gain nothing but $21.75 less in their bank account. But, use the many suggestions (we love the helpful hints inside!) for improvement and you'll have a better program as a result.

If I knew what was in here before we bought it, we'd have paid $121.75 for it.

Ms. Stanco, if you ever read these comments - thank you from all of us at Rio Rancho Public Schools outside of Albuquerque!

We own both of Ms. Stanco's books....Marketing and Programming Madness.

There are a lot of great examples of real world marketing and programming Summer Programs...just plug in and use if you need.

Text is big, and while it's not a long book, it's packed solid with good information. It's also an easy read - it can take you and hour if you skim thru it, or days if you try to gather all the wondeful details within.

This is a real find for anyone that has a Summer Camp or related situation.

We own both of Ms. Stanco's books....Marketing and Programming Madness.

There are a lot of great examples of real world marketing and programming Summer Programs...just plug in and use if you need.

Much of what makes Marketing Madness useful, is re-addressed in Programming Madness. While Marketing Madness tells you how to appeal to your audience, Programming helps you improve (or indeed, begin) a Summer Camp or Afterschool Extra-curricular program.

Text is big, and while it's not a long book, it's packed solid with good information. It's also an easy read - it can take you and hour if you skim thru it, or days if you try to gather all the wondeful details within.

This is a real find for anyone that has a Summer Camp or related situation. It works for us - the pages are shopworn now.
