I was a student at USL during the time the events in this book took place. Beryl Shipley was bigger than life then, and he's even bigger now. He made significant and positive history with respect to integrating sports in Louisiana. This book exposes the sham of back-room Louisiana politics and the pathetic actions of the NCAA and the University at that time in its history. Shipley deserves more recognition than he's received. Maybe this book will begin to show how much the man accomplished and how little the University deserved such a man. The NAACP should take a look at the events of this book and seriously consider honoring Beryl Shipley. We all knew he was a great coach, but few knew the battles he was fighting off the court with the University administration and Louisiana politicians. College sports fans need to read this book.

It has been said that one knows a hoosier because they are thepeople who dribble a basketball around the Indy 500 while looking formushrooms! If you are not from Indiana, I'll give you a secret, basketball is sacred, especially High School Basketball. Mr. Knight's book captures the "Golden Age" when basketball ruled and tv was non-existant. Anyone who has watched the movie "Hoosiers" must read this book. It is so well written, you can hear the sound of basketball shoes on hardwood. Personally the author is a story teller at heart, the soul of a Bard with the passion of a true Hoosier.

Space Jam is a book about a mix between real people and cartoons. In the book Martians from a cartoon planet are losing control over their cartoon attractions. No one is coming anymore, and the rides are boring! So the boss of the Martians sends them to Bugs Bunny's world. The Martians landed down and said that the toons are now prisoners to the Martian world. They are going to be a new attraction to their theme park. Now Bugs saw that the Martians are very Dumb. So he says that they have to let them have a chance to defend themselves. So Bugs said, if they win in a basketball game, Bugs and the other tunes don't have to be there slaves. The Martians agreed to the offer and started to practice.

Later in the human world, Michael Jordon was in the middle of a golf game. It was his turn to go, so he hit and the ball stopped for a moment, halfway down the hill. Then, for some strange reason the ball started to roll again, and the ball went straight in the hole. Since this was his first time, his annoying friend wanted to take a picture of him pulling out the golf ball. When the picture snapped, Michael Jordon disappeared. Well, Michael really didn't dissapear, he just got sucked down into the cartoon world by Bugs Bunny. Then the cartoons asked Michael to help them in the Basketball game. Michael accepted and started to practice. Finally the big day came but the Martians weren't themselves. They were huge, they were the "Monstars". It was very hard to compete with them, then they finally beat them. It was very hard, but they finally slipped away. If you want to find out what happens next read the cool book Space Jam.

I wish I had had this book during the telecast of the women's soccer championship -- now I know what the commentators should have told me! Bartges's great illustrations and down-to-earth text likewise make the infathomable rules of ice hockey easy to understand -- I can't wait for the season to start so that I can test my newly gained expertise. My wife read the chapter on football and has already watched some exhibition NFL games -- and enjoyed them!

With the proliferation of sporting events on television, this book should be sitting beside every TV set.

A three Pointer at the buzzer

It is an honor to be the first person to review this book. One of my greatest childhood memories is of my father taking my brother and I to see the Globetrotters in the late 60's. I fell in love with the show then and have gone to see them about ten times since then. I love introducing people to the trotters who never saw them in person before. Now this great new book comes along about the Trotters. It was too good to be true. This is a very scholarly tome. It is richly detailed. I came away from it marveling at the stamina and endurance of this team. Being in existence for 80 years is truly remarkable. This book traces the teams' history from their humble beginnings in the 1920's to their resurgence in 2005. I was startled by the poor conditions they played under early on. Abe Saperstein, the founder and owner of the team is an enigma. I found myself admiring him greatly at times and hating him for his veiled prejudice and sense of superiority.Mr Green devotes a lot of space to Goose Tatum and Marques Haynes. It is worth it to get to know these great players that came before my time. The story about Goose and his "son" was very funny. I was really looking forward to reading the section on Meadowlark Lemon. He was my globetrotter hero growing up and it was a bit sad to read about his career as a Trotter. The book really picks up steam when Mannie Jackson is introduced as the current owner of the team and all of his changes are instituted and the Globetrotters are returned to glory. The book has great closure. If I had one quibble with this book I would have liked to know more about the inner workings of the games and how the Trotters work with the Washington Generals or whichever team they are playing. I would have loved to have read what it is like playing against the Trotters night after night. It would have been interesting to read about the referees throughout the years. They have borne the brunt of many a globetrotter riff. It would have been nice to have seen them paid their due.I applaud Mr Green for an exhaustively written book about one of the greatest sports teams of all times.

This special edition magazine offers a glimpse at what Kentucky Basketball is and has been in the past. It offers small stories of championship teams of the past. Also included is a list of all time leading statistics. This is a must have for any UK fan, though it is not as in depth as I would have liked.
