This was a great book. It told a lot about NBA players before a basketball game. It shows how they get set up for a big basketball game. The book also tells us how the basketball, hoop and backboard were invented. If you love basketball, you would enjoy this book.

Both my boys loved the book- they are 12 and 10 years old- neither plays basketball- one is a soccer player and the other fences- but they certainly found they could relate to the characters and the dilemmas they faced- any parent who has sat on the sidelines watching their child play a sport can relate as well- has a nice message- we often give copies of this book as a bday gift-

Dave Heeren's innovative TENDEX system (a guide to ranking players and teams and even coaches) is the backbone of the book and at the root of most his conclusions, which are logical and interesting. Heeren includes a broad variety of statistics which will hold the attention of any basketball fan, and his book is an excellent tool for stat nuts.

A program and career building block!!!

This book is essential for anyone who is considering entering the coaching arena. The book is not a primer on running plays and rebounding effectively. It is the keystone for building an effective program and increasing the effectiveness of the coaches who are entrusted with it! I have used this book and its philosophies to better understand my motivations on the sideline and improve my relationships with my players and other coaches. This book was placed in the working library of the Morris Center YMCA (Cedar Knolls, N.J.) where we used it to help push the enrollment in our Youth Basketball Association to over 450 children. I am now the Assistant Basketball Coach at the College of St. Elizabeth (Convent Station, N.J.) and I have assigned chapters for other coaches to read and several of the forms have been modified for my specific needs. If you are building a program, a career or both, this must be in your collection!

Great introductory book for basketball coaches

I just completed my first year as high school varsity basketball coach and this book has helped immensely. I would say I have used 7-8 drills from this book, and have also used a few offensive and defensive schemes. The book is well organized and easy to understand with well-illustrated diagrams and logical reasoning behind the presented theory.

What was really nice about this book is the variety of offenses it covered. This book covered every offensive situation that can happen. I also like the fact that the sets and plays have names. I was able to implement some of thes plays into our offense.
This book is a big help to coaches who are looking to get good shots for their scorers or getting everyone involved. It is also filled with info for different styles of teams. I found this book to be helpful throughout the high school season. This book will sharpen your ideas and visions of what coaching basketball includes. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to learn about offensive basketball. Great reading, and a great learning tool.

Book gives positioning for every conceivable offensive and defensive set a team might throw at you. It teaches transition movement, ball-passing movement, shot movement. It stresses that in order to be a good ref you MUST understand the game itself and be able to anticipate what's coming next. It teaches you to recognize offenseive sets (man-to-man and zone, and the nuances of each subsequent variation) and the proper positioning. Unbeleiveably thorough and easy to understand. Well written. For instance, it suggests you wear a white t-shirt under your stripes (as opposed to black, recommended by most associations) because it makes your stripes look brighter and cleaner! A subtle, subconscious advantage that goes to making you LOOK like a referee! BUY THIS BOOK AND BE A BETTER REFEREE!!! (When is the three-man version coming out?)
