Marks Of Distinction: Two Hundred Years Of American Drawings And Watercolors From The Hood Museum Of Art is the accompaniment of the centerpiece exhibition of a year-long celebration commemorating the Hood Museum of Art's twentieth anniversary as well is its permanent collection. An introductory essay leads into this elaborate visual tour of classic pastel, ink, and watercolor artworks by notable American artists ranging from John Singleton Copley to John James Audubon to James McNeill Whistler and many more. Each piece of art is featured on a two-page spread; to the right is an exquisite photograph of the work itself in full color, to the left is a detailed one-page essay concerning the history, composition, and other pertinent details concerning the work. Marks Of Distinction is as much a celebration of American artistic consciousness and legacy as it is a display of fine museum pieces, and surely the next best thing to visiting the Hood Museum of Art in person.

Marty Engstrom is one of those colorful, unforgettable New England characters that always has an interesting story to tell. From the Northeast's highest peak, home to "the worst weather in the world," Marty writes about the countless days and nights he spent at the WMTW-TV transmitter facility located at the summit of Mount Washington, testing the limits of human endurance and the limits of technology. Truly fascinating.

This is an excellent historical document which has been very accurately researched by Daniel Chipman, a person who actually knew Seth Warner.
A "Band of Cousins", Seth Warner, Remember Baker and Ethan Allen were three very important individuals in the establishment of Vermont as a state.
Anyone interested in the early history of Vermont and the beginnings of the Revolutionary War should read this book.

Great reference to one of the most scenic trails in New England. Packed with useful information, descriptions of every inch if the trail, in a convenient, thin, lightweight book that slips into your pack, ready for any time you want to check it. Trail maps for the whole length are crisp and easy to follow. A reference you'll refer to until you have it memorized!

I always have these maps with me when I go for a ride and also keep one in my car. It fits in my inside pocket when I'm on my bike so they're perfect for motorcycles. I've done most of the suggested rides on the New Hampshire map and they are all scenic and good riding...some rides I would never have done if they were not suggested on the maps.

The truth about NH trails.....

Most of the books I've read about our area trails seem to be written by either agro-adrenalin-junkies or "Freds". Luckily this is not one of them! This is the first book I've read about out trails that was obviously written by someone who rides the trails (often) and is familiar w/ the subtleties of riding on NH (Rocks, Roots, and Ruts ;-) singletracks.
I've ridden in most of the places reviewed (and plan to visit the ones I haven't ;-) and fully agree with his observations... Of most importance when he says it's suitable for families w/ children, it is. As a parent I can attest that nothing is more frustrating to a child or parent than driving an hour to someplace only to find that it is WAY beyond the ability of my kids to ride.
This book has even helped me find some great local spots I never knew existed.

The 'then & now' theme is portrayed masterfully as photographs from page to page propel the reader backward and forward through time. The 'now' photographs are particularly amazing as most mimic the older shots almost exactly. The narrative is poignant and most informative.
This is a 'must have' publication for anyone who has been fortunate enough to grow up in this fine city.

While my 18 years in Nashua, NH, don't qualify me as a 'native,' I found it very interesting reading. So many of the same family names are common threads woven through the fabric of our history. It was especially enjoyable to share it with the children, and to point out the various locations on our drives. It helps us all have a deeper appreciation of what has changed, and what has not.

This is an outstanding professional work which set the standard for Northeastern and US archaeology. Among other things, it serves as an antidote or standard by which to compare archaeological reports based on wishful thinking when dealing with Paleoindian sites and claims.
