Definitive Study of Residential Houses
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-12
Bunting's book is definitive, scholarly yet readable. He defines various architectural features, as well as outlining technological and cost elements, of representative 'mansions/townhouses' built in post civil war Boston. It is fascinating. I found it best read through once for the total picture then used as a selective reference (for example: the intersection of the changes in heating technology on design). Photos are provided to illustrate points made.

A concise study of British architectural color
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-06
There is a steady balance between the near ancient and contemporary and is carefully catalogued in this small, colorful book. It is a simple catalog only in its design, and it is packed with easy to read information about the history of British architecture: the colors, materials, context (both within British history and accompanying styles elsewhere) and building types. Of special note is a detailed color history of housing exteriors and its application. This book may be of special concern to theatre and cinema scenic designers and production artists since there are well over one hundred detailed color drawings to scale with accompanying notes as to exterior color, material, location, date, etc. While this work may be on the literary level of an architect, it is a passionate work written by an author and modified by his son who loves history and the understanding that the house is truly a home with a record of those who lived in it.

Excellent resource for students of interior design history

With all the books written on Roman architecture and art, I was thrilled to find this comprehensive book on domestic Roman interiors. Written in a reader friendly manner - the book covers all elements of Roman interiors from mosaics, architectural elements, layout and visual axis to the four decorative styles. It even helps the reader to understand the motivation behind these styles, and how the Romans felt about their interiors. I would say this book is a must have for any interior design student.

A Most Cruel and Inhuman Book!
Helpful Votes: 26 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-05
This book has given me the incredible desire to take the rest of my life and do nothing except tour the archeological sites of classical Etruscan and Imperial Roman towns and cities! Alexander McKay- You are very cruel.

For many years I have seen pictures in books and online of fragments and ruins of buildings, which can be interesting but seeing the pictures in the context of a complete floor plan brings a sudden epiphany of how our forebearers lived. I spent 7 hours surfing on the net looking at the pictures online for a number of the palaces and houses included in this book and dreaming of an itinerary covering almost all of western Europe, northern Africa and great areas of the near and mid East. Now I need to go out and win a very large lottery to afford it.

Understanding the Amsterdam School
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-23
This book is a brilliantly researched work of great significance to the literature of 20th century housing in Europe. Part of four great housing movements of the 1920's including Vienna, Frankfurt and Berlin along with Amsterdam, together they tell an important story of housing by and for people. One of the best parts of this book is the guide at the end which shows all of the most important projects on a map with detailed information about each including the number of units, the architects and the housing society responsible for each. This will be come a classic in its field.

Forgotten Heritage-Thankfully no longer forgotten.

The authors and contributors to this book worked deep in the fine details of Houston's past. So much of it has been lost to the ages, but with Houston's Forgotten Heritage, it almost comes back to life through the fine photographs of the opulent homes and even the log cabins. It is a joy to show this book to many of my "old-timer" neighbors, who remember a building here and there, and even the old fixtures, appliances, and ways of life. We should all be grateful to the authors of this book for reminding us of our glorious past.

Ever wonder why those old farms and classic homes look so good? Donald J.Berg uses beautiful old-time plans and illustrations, and quotes from yesterday's builders and architects to show you. I breezed through the pages, enjoyed every one and was amazed at how much I learned. I wish I read this book before I built my county cabin. Now I'm building a barn (designed by Berg!!!) out back and I won't make the same mistakes.

i was surprized to learn the author has a harvard MBA. i'd read his website johntreed.com and always thought of him as a bitter person. but this book has NO FLUFF and is full of sound practical advice. he explains the 3 year payback rule for everything from light bulbs to renovations and has calculations to back it all.
must read for anyone thinking of, or already managing property.
