This book is very beautiful. A thick book filled with glossy high-quality photographs of a very wide range of decorating styles and architectures. As the title suggests, the emphasis is on windows, but also the way window styling integrates with room decor is heavily emphasized as well. Another thing strongly covered is the use of drapes and blinds, as well as general decorating accents (throw pillows, ect.)and color schemes. An excellent book for decorating ideas generally, too.

A Timely and Timeless Overview on Solving Homelessness

To my knowledge, this is the first book which addresses how architecture plays a key role in any long-term solution to the complicated urban phenomenon of homelessness. The author, an architect with deep experience in designing shelters and transitional housing, provides an explanation of how the "continuum of care" (from emergency shelters thru assisted housing) and the integration of services and community are the key factors in any solution. He then covers the practical difficulties involved in building or renovating structures for the various homeless populations, including why "low cost housing" ends up being a misnomer. The well-researched case studies of successful shelter and housing projects from around the country will help architects, service providers and municipal agencies with their own planning.
This book packs a lot into a relatively short 145 pages (including a brief but cogent history of the problem), and I would recommend it as essential reading to anyone tasked with addressing homelessness in their own community. Architecture students interested in designing "real world" solutions would profit as well. They might well wish the illustrations were larger, but the black-and-white photos and drawings are helpful in udnerstanding the concepts and examples.

An essential read for architect's, particularly starting professionals

I just completed reading (and will reread again) this book and it was just what I needed at this point in my career. Having started my own practice a little over a year ago, most of my projects have been houses or remodelling of apartments. This is not a coincidence since small scale projects are what most starting professionals are offered in the beginning if at all. I've been trying to find a way to fulfill my professional duties while still trying to pay myself to stay in business and this book has really made me understand what my duties are as well as what is not. I'll try to elaborate~
I came across this book recently while visiting a past employer's office and the copy he had was the original first print from 1983. The book was pretty tattered, but that only added to it's allure since the title was exactly what I was doing professionally. In any case, I borrowed the book and started reading that night. From the beginning, I felt like I got a refresher course on what an architect does professionally in this society. Being trained as a modernist since college and seeking out only modern or progressive designs, there were several times I felt really discouraged when clients asked for a "classical" feel to their houses. However, after reading the introduction, I realized that the outer design should be something to consider a little later in the planning stage and not something that should be so rigid. The most important thing is that architects are, in the most part, experts in building design (regardless of -isms) and that includes a vast knowledge in costs, new constructions methods, etc.etc. This is probably obvious to others, but after trying to stay on such a straight and narrow path towards rigid modern designs that I prefer may not be the wisest business decisions in my current career stage.
In any case, this book is a great manual in "How to design your client's house." Written by a very prolific and talented architect Alfredo De Vido, it includes many case study examples of houses that have been successful in being economical, respectful of site and client's needs.

A collaboration of expert researchers Joe L. Frost, Pei-San Brown, John A. Sutterby and Candra D. Thornton, The Developmental Benefits Of Playgrounds studies how growth and development can be stimulated in a child's play environment, with special emphasis on useful applications of behavioral and scientific findings. Revealing that the more children are allowed to be absorbed in play, the more they are able to realize imaginative skills and immerse themselves in the adult world. Specific topics include the importance of height for both child development and playground safety, the very real problem of obesity among children as exacerbated by unhealthful diets and insufficient physical activity, the nature and benefits of children's climbing behaviors, and so much more. Packed from cover-to-cover with practical, applicable recommendations, The Developmental Benefits Of Playgrounds is enthusiastically recommended for anyone responsible for deftly designing a safe and stimulating play area for children.

SUPERB ODESSA, DELAWARE COLONIAL HOME PHOTOGRAPHY

This fine book is a concisely brief photographic
history of eighteenth and nineteenth century colonial
homes in Odessa, Delaware. It contains many fine photos.
I was particularly attracted to this book because
the man who was the original creator of my ancestral
Lister family died in 1819 on his wheat farm around
Odessa, Delaware in New Castle County. His name was
Joshua Lister. He was married to Nancy Hartshorne.
They had a daughter named Mary who married Hezekiah Masten.
They also had sons named James, Henry, Joshua and Timothy.
Almost all individuals with the last name of Lister
who have resided in Caroline, Talbot and Queen Anne's
counties in Maryland are members of this same Lister
family. There have been only a very few exceptions to this
general rule.
