Highly recommended for anyone who is pondering building a log cabin, and a must have for community library environmental collections.

I thought the "stages" shown in this book were very helpful. True, I don't own the type of home shown but one can easily interpret the ideas to suit a more modest home and budget. I purchased this book after her newest book, "A Winter House" (so very scrumptous!}.

Historians, collectors and home and garden readers will learn about the movement and its impact on home furnishing trends, offering many rare color photo views of past interiors and exteriors along with dozens of drawings not seen elsewhere. A scholarly tone is added with an analysis of gender roles and architectural history, but while this scholarly tone allows CREATING THE ARTFUL HOME to be a pick for some college-level arts collections, its more likely audience will be the public or general-interest lending library, which will find it a unique coverage.

From the dust cover of this beautiful book to the last pages, readers are treated to beautiful photography, copies of lovely paintings, and a narrative about the history of this unique place on the CA coast. The book is divided into time frames starting in 1917 and continuing to 2001. Each segment gives the reader a glimpse into the recent past, of simplier times and the quest for life on the CA seashore. This book is very readable, a feast for the eyes and one that will join my permanent collection of very special books. Suitable for display as a prized coffee table book.

Vern wrote an easy to follow, educational guide for those who are having a custom home designed. It's written in laymans terms and it offers questions even those in the industry may not think to ask. Beautiful renderings and photos add to this spectacular book. From a woman who has grown up in a family of architecture, I highly recommend this book.

The book is chock full of excellent photos, plans, sections, diagrams, sketches and thoughtful text. This is a top notch architecture book which is a perfect snap shot to David Adjaye's residential work and happily enough, millwork and furnishings also by the architect. With Adjaye's work primarily in/around London, a good portion of it is not totally ground up but intelligent re-workings and engagement with existing structures. I'm looking forward to the inevitable "Houses Vol.2".
