You can practically smell the magnoliasReview Date: 2005-05-05
Focusing of historic houses in the city and the surrounding area, the lavish contemporary color photos of exteriors, interiors and gardens are juxtaposed with older black and white photos of the same houses and neighborhoods. This book rises beyond the coffee table/souvenir category because the author is a professional architectural historian.
Highly recommended for Savannah residents and visitors and anyone interested in historic Southern architecture.

Excellent resource for communicative planningReview Date: 2001-04-29
Collaborative Planning, while still purporting to address the failings of Modern planning, seeks to address the difficulties of undertaking collective action in a world where fact and value cannot be separated, by using an institutional approach which pays heed to the cultural embeddedness of individuals, and the social construction of meaning. Through policy discourse, the institutional capacity of a place can be 'built up'. Planning then, has the potential to shape the building of relations and discourse. An institutional approach would not measure success via assessment of outcomes against goals, but would also look at the institutional capacity generated by the process. All stakeholders are part of the dialogue.
Collaborative Planning sees 'the problem' as essentially being: the changing dynamics of the way we live, global economics, bringing the views of all stakeholders together in a way that recognises power structures, and the role that planning might play in resolving these.
Overall, the book is an excellent starting point for the critical exploration of communicative planning and the governance of urban regions. The book successfully synthesizes practical understandings of urban dynamics with a critique informed by a sound philosophical and political basis. I strongly recommend it, especially to the student and practitioner of urban planning and related fields.

A sumptuous collection from the pages of COLONIAL HOMEReview Date: 2002-07-26
Fortunately, even if you were never a "Colonial Homes" subscriber, you can still indulge your love for classic American style via Rosemary Rennicke's lovely "Classic American Decorating." The homes features herein are all taken from the pages of the magazine, and they amply show the magazine's high quality and standards. There is no country-kitschy stuff here--everything is distilled to its purest essence, whether it is a keeping room in an 18th century Connecticut home or the bedroom in a high-rise Manhattan apartment building.
The book is divided into chapters covering architecture, furniture, accessories, and so on. The photography is handsome, and the book design is pleasing to the eye. Rennicke's text is admirable not only for its insight, but for its restraint. She leads the reader gently along, pointing out what is of interest without being intrusive or overly pedantic. This is a coffee table book home-lovers will turn to again and again for a sweet indulgence in domestic day-dreaming.

Great color theory for those how like pastelsReview Date: 2001-09-26
The book starts out with a brief explanation of the color wheel and a color chart. It is then divided into several color themes. These include blush, ripe, ambrosial, sweet, appealing, fresh, calm, refreshing, charming, old-fashioned, ethereal, vivacious, iridescent and subtle. Each theme focuses on a color or group of colors such as yellow-green for fresh, violet for ethereal and blue-violet for old-fashioned. Monochromatic, analogous, complementary, clash, split-complementary, and neutral color schemes are shown in color swatches for each theme. A process color conversion chart is included in the back.
This book is set up like the Color Harmony Workbook, but has a few less color schemes for each color theme, although there are many color themes here that are not contained in Home Color Workbook. This is a great addition to those volumes or a less expensive substitute for those who just like pastels color schemes. In the back there is a process color conversion chart and 152 cut-out color swatches with CMYK information on the backs.
