I thought the book gave an excellent description of yurts and tipis from a historical perspective and present day use. Its gives case studies/examples of people who current live in these types of unique dwellings. We added a couple of yurts to our North Georgia bed and breakfast inn. We have witnessed some of the feelings first hand that our guests have had that were also mentioned in the book by yurt dwellers.

This 142-page medium-large format book provides a great reference or keepsake about this charming city of Savannah, GA.

Focusing of historic houses in the city and the surrounding area, the lavish contemporary color photos of exteriors, interiors and gardens are juxtaposed with older black and white photos of the same houses and neighborhoods. This book rises beyond the coffee table/souvenir category because the author is a professional architectural historian.

Highly recommended for Savannah residents and visitors and anyone interested in historic Southern architecture.

Pick up this book and let all your cares slip away as you fantasise about what is possible in your classical home. Beidermeir furniture, plantation shutters, Le Corbusier furniture and parquet flooring all feature in this stylish expose of classicism. With a chronological journey through Adam style and classic french to modern interpretations of classic Greek ( for the greeks didn't have the kitchens we have) you can sigh, plan and ponder. Real life examples show that the style is achievable and affordable. This book is a joy to behold.

Collaborative Planning: Shaping Places in Fragmented Societies

Excellent resource for communicative planning
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

Healey's challenge is to create understandings of the social construction of meaning and the social embeddedness of ways of acting and thinking to be tied with understandings of the wider forces affecting urban regions and governance.

Collaborative Planning, while still purporting to address the failings of Modern planning, seeks to address the difficulties of undertaking collective action in a world where fact and value cannot be separated, by using an institutional approach which pays heed to the cultural embeddedness of individuals, and the social construction of meaning. Through policy discourse, the institutional capacity of a place can be 'built up'. Planning then, has the potential to shape the building of relations and discourse. An institutional approach would not measure success via assessment of outcomes against goals, but would also look at the institutional capacity generated by the process. All stakeholders are part of the dialogue.

Collaborative Planning sees 'the problem' as essentially being: the changing dynamics of the way we live, global economics, bringing the views of all stakeholders together in a way that recognises power structures, and the role that planning might play in resolving these.

Overall, the book is an excellent starting point for the critical exploration of communicative planning and the governance of urban regions. The book successfully synthesizes practical understandings of urban dynamics with a critique informed by a sound philosophical and political basis. I strongly recommend it, especially to the student and practitioner of urban planning and related fields.

A sumptuous collection from the pages of COLONIAL HOME
Helpful Votes: 43 out of 44 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-26
Poor "Colonial Home" magazine. After decades as the premiere magazine of antique American homes, it changed its name to "Classic American Home" and then was out of business in the ad-pages slump that followed September 11th, 2001. It was a great loss to those who love viewing and learning about historical American homes.

Fortunately, even if you were never a "Colonial Homes" subscriber, you can still indulge your love for classic American style via Rosemary Rennicke's lovely "Classic American Decorating." The homes features herein are all taken from the pages of the magazine, and they amply show the magazine's high quality and standards. There is no country-kitschy stuff here--everything is distilled to its purest essence, whether it is a keeping room in an 18th century Connecticut home or the bedroom in a high-rise Manhattan apartment building.

The book is divided into chapters covering architecture, furniture, accessories, and so on. The photography is handsome, and the book design is pleasing to the eye. Rennicke's text is admirable not only for its insight, but for its restraint. She leads the reader gently along, pointing out what is of interest without being intrusive or overly pedantic. This is a coffee table book home-lovers will turn to again and again for a sweet indulgence in domestic day-dreaming.

Color Harmony Pastels: A Guidebook for Creating Great Color Combinations (Color Harmony)

Great color theory for those how like pastels
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-26
This is one of the best books on color theory I have found. I like pastel colors best and I am glad to have found a book specifically focused on them. The color themes really help you set the right mood and with such a variety of color combinations for each one anyone can find something to suit their taste. It has been an invaluable reference tool in helping me decorate my home.

The book starts out with a brief explanation of the color wheel and a color chart. It is then divided into several color themes. These include blush, ripe, ambrosial, sweet, appealing, fresh, calm, refreshing, charming, old-fashioned, ethereal, vivacious, iridescent and subtle. Each theme focuses on a color or group of colors such as yellow-green for fresh, violet for ethereal and blue-violet for old-fashioned. Monochromatic, analogous, complementary, clash, split-complementary, and neutral color schemes are shown in color swatches for each theme. A process color conversion chart is included in the back.

This book is set up like the Color Harmony Workbook, but has a few less color schemes for each color theme, although there are many color themes here that are not contained in Home Color Workbook. This is a great addition to those volumes or a less expensive substitute for those who just like pastels color schemes. In the back there is a process color conversion chart and 152 cut-out color swatches with CMYK information on the backs.
