When we purchased and moved into our "remuddled" (the previous owners paneled over the fireplace in the living room) 126-year old home, we were completely overwhelmed. My husband and I took turns being stumped by all the things that needed repair. Then a friend told us about this book. I finally have answers to the questions I thought were unanswerable. I can tackle the calked-shut windows, the sagging staircase, and even the holes and cracks in the plaster. On some issues I even know more than the home improvement store people I used to seek out for help.

If you have a pre 1939 home, then you NEED this book. It is the owners manual!

The first house we bought was a 1920s-era Spanish Med Rev. It had been "updated" in a horrendous way in the 1980s and our first task was to undo the updates. The book has been an indispensable resource that helps us understand many of the basic principles involved in old house construction and trim work. Besides allowing me to perform DIY more effectively, it also has been very useful for understand when contractors do--and do not--follow the principles as they work on our old house. On one occasion, when a contractor started to do some work incorrectly, the book allowed me to discuss with him some aspects of the window trim that I wanted done differently. I've had this book for over 10 years and it is one of the most-used books in my collection. I don't want to lend it our because I'm afraid I won't get it back!

The editors have compiled an admirable collection of articles for everyone concerned with current issues related to child welfare, and especially residential treatment or group care. This book could not be more timely in the current era increasingly focussed upon the important matters needing to be addressed to enable children, adolescents and their families navigate the difficulties inherent in the process of returning home and to the community. The authors of these collected papers are really to be applauded for their careful attention to these issues!!

This extremely valuable volume carefully addresses many of the complex issues related to planning for the transitions of young people from residential treatment and group care. The articles use careful observation and empirical methods to inform us about what is being done to help young persons become successful in their return home and to the broader community. The chapters provide excellent discussions related to sexually aggressive residents, the engagement of families in the treatment process, a program description and preliminary outcome review of a model Transitional Living Program, and a careful critique of social/life-skills training programs so essential to successful transitions.

I have been anticipating this book since I first heard it was being written. It surpasses my expectations. Kathy Regan shares the journey of her hospital; a journey towards compassionate and effective healing of troubled children. She is honest and open about the difficulties she encountered. With imagination and passion, she leads a culture change and paradigm shift that will soon become the gold standard for child mental health.

I expected to devour this book in a marathon reading session when it arived, as a staunch believer in Ross Green's Collaborative Problem Solving approach and a friend of the author. Instead, I have been reading it slowly and carefully, savoring the proof that positive change can happen in even the most entrenched systems. I am so impressed by what this team of professionals did, for the benefit of the neediest of children. This book should be required reading for those among us who have ever wondered if there was a better way to do things. It is so easy to read about a new philosophy, and quite another to put it into action. I am awed by what this team did, and hopeful that it will serve as an inspiration to others. Diane L. If ever you want to be inspired, transformed, bowled over or "wowwed" by the possibilities of an old house... Read the Pomada/Larsen series. The pictures are breathtakenly beautiful and the text is quite informative. Lots of 'pearls of wisdom' there. Before you buy that victorian, read this book for some informative information. After you buy--keep reading (like a litany) to keep the vision alive amidst the rubble and asbestos. You won't be sorry ---you will be renewed. These books were like falling in love, or the collector's itch---The fever is maddening but the end result is Oh so sweet. Get them all!! (5 titles still available)

Back to the future?

Review Date: 2003-08-14
11 years after the publication of "Painted Ladies," Elizabeth Pomada returned to San Francisco to gaze anew upon its Victorians, and found a new concern for authenticity, subtlety, and sophistication in what she now calls the "Colorist Movement." The examples she shows here, while still splendidly detailed and richly pigmented, are for the most part less gaudy than those in the first book, reflecting the emergence of yuppies onto the preservationist stage earlier occupied by hippies and radicals. Almost the best part of the book, however, is the many interiors she has included, often by houseowners with a keen interest in authentic restoration. Architecture and interior-decorating buffs alike will want to own this volume.

Whistler's Aesthetic Interior
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-31
"Remember," wrote the British art critic John Ruskin in 1853, "that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless; peacocks and lilies for instance." When a peacock unfolds its plumage, the eyespots on its feathers form exact logarithmic spirals, like those in a daisy, a pinecone, and a sunflower. Twenty years later, Ruskin's remark inspired the Aesthetic Movement ("Art for art's sake"), of which the chief proponents were the Irish playwright Oscar Wilde and the American painter James A.M. Whistler. Wilde sometimes wore a sunflower in his lapel; and Whistler, as is documented in this thoroughly researched and richly illustrated volume (with 250 illustrations, nearly half in color), created an opulent dining room for London businessman Frederick Leyland, with peacocks as the main motif. Completed amid controversy in 1877, Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room was dismantled and sold after Leyland's death, and, in 1923, reconstructed in the U.S. at the Freer Gallery of Art, a branch of the Smithsonian Institution, where it remains on view. A key event in design history, it was restored physically in 1989 through 1992; and now this book restores it historically, thereby "dispelling some of the myths and misconceptions that had settled over the story like mantles of aging varnish." As a cultural biography, the book's greatest virtue is its breadth of focus: Just as Whistler's interior served as an elaborate setting for Leyland's Chinese porcelain collection, Merrill provides a rich wide factual setting for the Peacock Room. This is an erudite investigation into the life styles of both Whistler and his patron Frederick Richards Leyland. Whilst being essentially an art book, it deals with its subject matter in a lively mannner which could well form the basis of a movie script.

Beautiful, informative book for research or souvenir
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-20
Prague has always been one of the most beautiful and interesting -- as well as historically significant -- cities of Central Europe. Even forty-odd years of Communist domination weren't able to destroy that. This worthwhile book, published in 1994, focuses on perhaps the brightest jewel of that bright city, the Prague Castle.

Karl Schwarzenberg, editor of this title, is a former intimate advisor to Václav Havel and scion of a noble Austro-Bohemian family that is itself interesting and historically-significant. He has assembled a fine collection of art, photography, and narrative into a book that will satisfy people seeking a souvenir of their visit to Prague as well as historically-minded readers looking for a window into Czech history or medieval and early modern art and culture. The castle itself is thoroughly catalogued, from its ancient foundations to the modern, stylish, and unpretentious office of the president of the Czech Republic. St. Vitus's Cathedral, next door, is also covered, as are various squares, chapels, and the collection of the National Gallery at the nearby St. George's Convent.

In all, this book gives the reader much to admire and enjoy. I've never been to Prague, but it's definitely high up on my list of places I want to see. Until then, this book will be both diversion and further incentive.

One of the world's most beautiful cities is exquisitely represented in this splendid volume.

Beginning with a breathtaking twilight washed view of the towered city, each succeeding photograph reveals anopther extraordinary work of art within the Hrad or Prague Castle.

Its age of glory began in the early 14th century, with the first building dating back to the second half of the 9th century. Today it beguiles the eye in all its Baroque splendor.
