Now, this book was published in 1984, so some of it is a bit dated (especially entertaining was the discussion about whether or not giving cigarettes to children is appropriate). However, it gives an excellent overview of this type of work, and gave me a good list of questions I would want to ask a prospective employer about the job. For example, would I be eating with the kids? That's something that never would have occured to me, coming from corporate America, but free meals would help balance the relatively low wage one can expect from a job like this. Anyway, I'd highly recommend this book for anyone considering getting a residential care job, or those who have recently started.

An excellent resource for new Child Care Workers! Provides an accurate overview of what new Child Care Workers can expect upon entering this very challenging field of work. Our Residential Treatment Facility has made this handy little book "required reading" for all new staff members. Crone's knowledge and writing style makes for easy, pleasurable, and interesting reading. Despite the fact that this book was written years ago, any professional currently working in a Residential Treatment Facility will find that the "basics" remain "on-target" and essential for helping new staff get off to a positive start!

Thank you so much for giving me a preview edition of your new book. What an invaluable asset this will be to anyone struggling through the house hunting/ house building process.
You have coordinated all the services the consumer needs, giving order and structure to an often daunting task.
As a Realtor in Columbia County, where people are often looking for a comfortable second home in territory unfamiliar to them, I, personally, will be better able to serve the public with my new Real Estate "Bible" in hand.
Thanks again. With my best wishes and congratulations,

"Good House Hunting" - A great help to me and my customers!

I've come to realize over the 12 years of selling real estate what an emotional experience looking for one's dream home is, even for those who own several homes. For many people, it makes a statement to family and friends about who they are. Some people get so caught up in the fantasy of finding the "perfect home" that they never buy anything. This is especially true in a rural area where the inventory is limited, lacking charm and "soul" and where most of what gets sold ends up going through extensive renovations.
"Good House Hunting" is a methodical guide to identifying housing traits and property features which, once renovated, will allow you to end up in your "dream home". Dennis Wedlick has given you the map to follow to get you to that place. Through customers' reflections of how they live and what specific features are important to them, Dennis works to help them realize their dream home embodying spirit, soul and sentiment.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It will be a great help to me and to my customers!

I can start off this review by stating pretty much any book Alan Hess writes will find its way to my shelf. Googie Redux is an incredible update to the original which was a masterpiece in itself.
The new photographs and line drawings are a very nice touch along with the updated text. Mr. Hess has proven himself again as the leading authority on this genre of architecture.
The insight and presentation of the information is what this architecture truly deserves. To ignore this style and consider it a joke is something that will bite us back in years to come. By then most of these places will be torn down and we'll be left with only this book as a resource. But, oh what a resource it is!
Now, if only Mr. Hess could fly over to the East Coast and write a book about the architecture in the seaside community of Wildwood, New Jersey. Then the circle would be complete. Many of these motels were built around the same time as the West Coast structures and would make for a very interesting comparison. Same style and philosophies, but with different architects, locales, and climates. Very interesting indeed.
In summary the equation is simple...great author plus great architecture equals doubly great book!

Googie was fading by the time I came along, but even in the remote area of the Midwest that I grew up in, its influence was felt. As a child, I didn't know what those slanted roofs and skewered-ball sign spires were called or where they came from, but I found their spacey, cartoonish vibe appealing (if increasingly worn and ill-maintained as the 70s wore on). This book, "Googie Redux," puts "ultramodern roadside architecture" in historical context and tells the stories of the commercial architects who invented Googie, primarily in Southern California. There's also an excellent section on automotive design of the postwar era, the ideas which inspired it, and its relation to Googie architecture. Fans of Americana, architecture, capitalism, and pop culture in general will adore this thick compendium of intelligent analysis and, in many cases, superb photographs documenting the glorious heyday and painful decline of this once-dominant style. Though Googie was shunned by the architectural establishment in its time, it is now given its due in this beautiful book. Buy it, read it, and catch a glimpse of an era in which roadside architecture was more than just the series of bland, inoffensive, lookalike boxes dispensing burgers, burritos, and coffee that we must suffer today. This book will feed your postwar fantasies and break your heart when you realize how homogenized commercial architecture has become.

Mr. Tolles has reached a perfect balance of scholarly research and easy reading in a "coffee-table book" format. As someone who lives in the area with a strong interest in Tolles' subject matter (I own the annex building to the Sunset Hill House hotel) I can also vouch for the accuracy of what he has written.
A wonderful book, beautifully presented, highly readable and visually involving. Anyone with a love of history, architecture, romance, travel, or their ancestors is sure to enjoy it as much as I and my guests do.

This well-researched and informative book about the grand resort hotels of the White Mountains is simply one of those books which you add with pride to your library collection. It shows the hotel's importance in the architectural and social historical realm of New England and American history. It is full of andedotes on the hotel industry and is a vastly entertaining social picture. The book is full of many illustrations of present and long-gone hotels, 200 b&w and a number of color plates. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the hospitality history of this country, and the importance in the realm of things that the hotel places. Dr. Tolles have expertly brought this subject to life and I commend him for it.

As with all Acanthus Press books, this volumn is exquisitely presented, the paper quality is first rate and the black and white archieval images are vivid. I think most people, when they think of great Chicago houses, think of the great houses of Chicago's North Shore suburbs, most notably, Lake Forest, however, as this book chronicles, Chicago itself had some outstanding homes. Though i was familiar with some of the homes presented, many I was not. I think anybody with an appreciation of fine books or Chicago grand residental architecture will not be disappointed in this book. Frankly, anything that Acanthus Press publishes is worth owning if for no other reason than to appreciate the lost art of creating a fine book.

Mississippi residents, fans of old Southern architecture, and enthusiasts of American architectural heritage alike have a wonderful collection of full-color photos by Mary Rose Carter and accompanying historical background by Mary Carol Miller in Great Houses Of Mississippi. Miller's lively stories of the houses, their families, and their cultural mark accompany nearly a hundred full-color images of house exteriors. This is a vivid and highly recommended collection of grand old homes.

Mary Rose Carter's photographs are stunning. A tribute to the owners and designers who created these lasting treasures these homes represent. This book tops our Christmas gift giving list.

As with the other titles in this series by Bishir, they just don't get any better. The three books together offer a complete survey of historic architecture in North Carolina. There are many small black and white photographs included, good maps, essays that place the structures in historical context, addresses and precise dating, all grouped by county and organized around the principal towns in each. Many an AIA guide attempts this format and falls far short.
I liked this series so much I bought it twice--one to save and one to use.

Henry Clay Frick really knew how to live a gilded age life, and you see the evidence in this fantastic book. The images are crisp and well conceived and the text highly informative. I expecially liked the section on Frick's famous mansion on Fifth Avenue in NYC, he was determined to out build Carneige and he suceeded, it is a beaux-art tour de force and the perfect setting today for his singular collection. If you have any interest in Frick, Guilded Age architecture, or fine books in general, then i can't concieve of you being anything but thrilled with this purchase.

Visit the ancestral home of an ancient titled family in Britain (many of them now in the care of the National Trust), and you're likely to be confronted by carved lions, painted greyhounds, and basilisks figured in the table linen. There's not a baronial manor that doesn't feature heraldic symbols everywhere they can be portrayed, a sort of billboard advertising the dignity of the resident family. More than fifty sumptuous homes are featured in this coffee table volume, including Tattershall Castle, property of the Cromwells, Blickling Hall, which belonged to the earls of Buckinghamshire, and Baddesley Clinton, seat of the Ferrers family, of medieval origins. There are more than a hundred full color plates and illustrations, plus another hundred heraldric line drawings. In explaining the symbolism depicted and the uses made of it, the authors include a great deal of anecdotal history of the great aristocratic families. A treasure trove for art and architecture historians as well as heraldicists.

Over the centuries the gentry and nobility of England and Wales have displayed their wealth and power through the magnificence of their dwellings. Heraldry is a visual form of identity, used to display ownership. In this well-researched and illustrated book two officers of the English College of Arms write with authority about the heraldry to be discovered in many different forms in some historic homes under the management of the National Trust of England. This book is a joy to read and browse, for the serious student of heraldry, and those seeking a deeper understanding of the uses of heraldry as seen in historic homes of Britain.
