where is Jackson Webb,the author?

My wife and I have been to Paleochora, the location for this book, many times. But only during the last ten years or so.Mr Webb was there in the late 60's or early 70's.( The book was published in '77). The change from the quiet little village in South West Crete which he discovered to the thriving tourist centre which it is now was inevitable tho' in the off season,bearable..... mainly because of the great charm and generosity of the people who live there. Mr Webb gives away few secrets about his past,or his age. We reckon he was in his late forties,an American, and a melancholy fellow. He rented a tiny peasant cottage, and shared it with a goat or two and a cat
or two and a few vegetables which he grew, and his neighbours
who laughed at him and scolded him and enjoyed him as he enjoyed them.
When his year or so is up he moves on...we don't know where. He doesn't tell us. Has he written more books? Is he in fact alive?
We've been searching another copy of THE LAST LEMON GROVE,(we always have to take it out of the library),but alas the only one available seems to be with an American Co. who does not as yet send material to GB......we hope that says something about his book's attraction.A gentle story for a violent time.It badly needs to be reprinted.

Fighting in the Eastern Med
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-25
This is book two in the series of books featuring Nicholas Everard. In this book he is on the destroyer Tuareg operating in the Eastern Med. This is still early in the war, and the British flotilla is facing the might of the German Luftwaffe. Then the order comes to make one more trip into Crete.

Mr. Fullerton has done a supurb job of developing this new naval series. This series has the spirit of the Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey series, but it is set instead in the world of World War II. The author served with distinction as a submarine officer in the British Royal Navy. It is clear that he knows whereof he speaks, and his writing skills are up there with the best.

A very useful introduction

Although the title is misleading since only three major Latin historians are really considered (Sallust, Livy and Tacitus, with a short chapter devoted on other first century AD Latin historians), the book provides an excellent and fresh introduction to the above mentioned authors

The Law And The Courts In Ancient Greece is a collection of impressive scholarly essays by learned authors concerning the rule of law in ancient Greece, and questioning the success, thoroughness, and effectiveness of a legal system for meting out criminal justice. Focusing upon such topics as law, religion, sources of legitimacy, substance and procedure, legal arguments in court, documents and witnesses, and more, The Law And The Courts In Ancient Greece is a superb exploration of the founding principles and practices of modern justice systems used today. A college-level critical analysis of the foundation and practical aspects of enforcing laws and settling disputes, The Law And The Courts In Ancient Greece is a seminal contribution to Classical Law and Antiquarian History collections.

The Olympic Games and Much More

Review Date: 2003-12-25
This exceptional romp explores much of the world, beginning in Northern Mexico, continuing through parts of the U.S. and moving on through nearly all the Mediterranean world. Though it doesn't stop there. It sneaks on into French Polynesia, of all places. Yet every chapter is fresh and remarkable, full of spirit and information, like the origin of the Olympic Games, banking and commerce, and that ever-present doubt in all our minds: how on earth did anyone get the idea to build Venice!!! And keep it afloat. This book makes good reading, good gift giving, and good studying because Carol Miller's books are never dull, never banal and never boring.

Thumbs Up

A very fine collection of short biographies of ancient greeks, including Solon the lawgiver, Themistocles the father of Athens' navy, Pericles who oversaw the building of the Parthenon, and others, like the macedonian king Philip and his son Alexander the great (who conquered the Persian empire and died at age thirty three). The author provides an excellent general background chapter about ancient Greek history that gives a nice context to fit in the characters in the bios. Really a fun book for folks who are into ancient Greece. Gets a thumbs up from me.

Indispensable for study of the ancient world.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-30
This dictionary/encyclopedia is indispensable for any study of the ancient world. Without a doubt its accompanyment will broaden the scope of understanding for any student of Antiquity. Bibliotheca Classica: or, A Dictionary of all The Principal Names and Terms Relating to the Geography, Topography, History, Literature, and Mythology of Antiquity and of the Ancients, with a Chronological Table, by J. Lempriete, D.D., the title, sums up the main topics covered. The book is divided into three main parts; I. Geography, Topography, &c., II. History, Antiquities, &c., III. Mythology.

If you have ever read or studied the ancient world and have found yourself at a loss for names places and misc. this is the book for you.

If you are looking for the book that is easier to tote around than this one, I would like to suggest, "Dictionary of Classical Mythology" by J.E. Zimmerman. Coverage is extensive, but lacking the completness of much larger text by Leimpriere.

My husband and I used this book when we toured Greece on our honeymoon. Even with the tours that we had taken, we found that this was better. It gave us the best places to see, what we shouldn't miss and the best places to eat gave great explaination of everything. I would recommend this book to anyone. It gave a great variety of things especially price ranges. Loved this book, all my husband would say to me was I need the book, give me the book.
