This is an excellently compiled collection of translated original source material regarding the Byzantine Empire. Here you can read about what the Byzantines thought about Byzantine. It's got wonderful sections about relations with the West, the Turks, Culture and Life, Politics, Christianity, etc. If you have any interest in Byzantine, you've got to get this book. Great for not only the serious scholar but the general reader as well. Don't rely on historians to translate history for you; Do it yourself

Very well-written, fascinating treatment of this important period in history. Shows the importance of the Persian Empire and its influence on the Greek and Mediterranean empires than came afterward. The book manages to cover a great deal of material rather efficiently -- a must-have for anyone who wishes to seriously expand their understanding of civilization.

I am a retired professor of Classics. My speciality was ancient Greek and Latin poetry, not history. So, I can review this book with more knowledge than most, but not as much knowledge as some. Its contributors are among the world's leading ancient historians; and their contributions provide both a broad survey and an intensive analysis of a subject that is more interesting and important than many people realize.

Having visited Cephallonia twice, 1984 and 2000, we were amazed to receive this book for Christmas and fell in love with the island all over again. The book gives you a well-written history but "a picture is worth a 1000 words" is so applicable here. There are many other beautiful areas on Cephallonia then are dipicted in the book (there must be a limit somewhere) but I hope anyone who really reads this book will have a burning desire to see one of the most beautiful islands in the world. An absolute must to truly see the island is to rent a car and allow several days. Otherwise you will miss a lot.

This book was written so well that I had a hard time remembering who the author really was. I could relate to Horace and his hungar for acceptance, not from the ones who were closest to him, but the mystery of newness, the mystery of who he really was. The character is simple, yet fascinating in the way he incorporates his writing into his life, creating ideas as he journeys into something he feels so compelled to solve. I could relate to his thoughts and his ways of expressing his passions. We never really know what will happen next in our lives, at any age, life ends when we choose to stop living. Cast in Doubt was an interesting reminder to keep searching within myself, you never know where excitement lies. That is my simple review.

If you are interested in Classical history and politics, you must read this book. I'm not sure how well Beesly's ideas have stood the test of time, but the book is worth reading for his prose alone. And his central idea-- that these three men have been misjudged by posterity because they had powerful and eloquent enemies-- is worth considering. I love this book and used it to enhance my teaching of the Catilinarian conspiracy.

Whether or not you are familiar with the Grecian mileu, I warmly recommend this collection of Joy Stocke's poetry that were inspired during a visit to the island of Crete. Joy's words and expressions are as classically elegant as Grecian columns. Moreover, any one -- if not all -- of her works will touch a chord in your heart. Reading this book will delight your soul as well as stimulate your mind.

Both the exhibition and this catalogue are absolute gems, and can be appreciated by amateurs and specialists alike. Professionals in Greek myth and art may particularly delight in the little Acheloos figurine (p. 334) and Typhon depictions (as on p. 351), as well as in many other images rarely seen anywhere. A must for anyone teaching Myth or Greek iconography.

The woman's position in history is, yet again, reaffirmed by this excelent author! The mythological connections to literary tradition are provoking:)~ The style is readable, the research fascinating, and the entire work is well worth purchasing!
