A Real Outlaw
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-01
Did you grow up watching Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger chase bad guys on television every Saturday morning? If so, read Bah, Bah, Black Sheep, the story of a young man from a good family who became an outlaw in north Texas and south Oklahoma in the early 1900's. Using his well developed journalistic style, author Joe M. Leonard, Jr. chronicles the background and crime spree of Haney Liddell, whose black sheep life choices must have been a mystery and heartbreak to his otherwise upstanding family. The book is enhanced by numerous photos, maps and documents. As with television westerns, the law prevailed eventually, but the reality of Bah, Bah, Black Sheep is much more fascinating than any fiction.

This is the best book on barbed wire identification.
Helpful Votes: 36 out of 36 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-09
This is the best book on barbed wire identification that I have found. It is actually a catalog of line drawings of barbed wire patents. Because of this, there may be drawings of wire that may have never actually been produced. The drawings are very clear and are identified by name, patent number and patent date. There are no references to "Barbed Wire Bible" numbers that are commonly used to identify wire samples in collections. This is not a criticism, only an observation.

The best feature of this catalog is that it is arranged by classifying barbed wire by its attributes (e.g. 2 points, 4 points, metalic strip, etc.). This makes locating a wire sample very convenient.

A vivid portrait of Nancy Cooper
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-04
After Nancy Cooper married Charlie Russell in 1895 she helped turn him from a common ranch hand who sketched in his spare time to a full-time artist who sold and exhibited around the world. BEHIND EVERY MAN: THE STORY OF NANCY COOPER RUSSELL provides a striking story of the woman who made Charles Russell a world-famous artist: it deserves a spot in any art history library, any library strong in women's studies, and many a general-interest collection, painting a vivid portrait of Nancy Cooper in the only full-length coverage of her life and contributions.

Selected Recipes from Oklahoma's Favorite Cookbooks.

When the editors titled this `the best of the best' they weren't kidding. They have taken some of the best recipes from other Oklahoma cookbooks and combined them. The result is this wonderful cookbook full of easy, delicious ideas!

Although I enjoyed the Native American pictures and the drawings (they are beautiful to look at), I have to say my eyes had to first take in all the recipes, yum-yum. We have the usual contents from Appetizers to Desserts. The variety of recipes is wide; they are not focused on only what's considered Oklahoma cuisine. You will find a recipe for Clam Chowder right along with one for Rabbit Stir-Fry (haven't tried that one, I prefer petting them to eat them).

I promise you it doesn't matter where you live, you will enjoy trying the best recipes in Oklahoma. Brenda @ MyShelf.com

The Complete Atrisco Land Grant History

Review Date: 2008-09-22
Between Two Rivers consolidates all the published history of the Atrisco Land Grant (New Mexico Historical review Articles and Sanchez's previous book) into one well written book. The Book covers the whole history of the land grant as well as it's later Westland Development phase to the Suncal buyout or rather sellout. The book, despite being a very scholarly work, reads well and even gives a taste of the Atrisco people and culture. If you have heard of Atrisco then this is the book for you.

This is an essential tool of research for scholars. The aim of this reference work is to incorporate as much up-to-date reference as possible. Outlining the Egyptian history up to the 4th century A.D., the authors present in alphabetical order brief biographies of Egyptian kings, and other important historical and cultural figures, as well as some less well-known individuals : Akhenaten, Nefertiti, Cheops, Tutankhamun, Sethos I, Ramesses II, Ipuwer, Manetho, Alexander the Great, and Herodotus are just a few of the more than 200 entries on important historical and cultural figures in this impressive reference work.

AP Maudslay here produces this truly classic, titanic work. He lived at and cleared much of the mayan sites where he did his extensive work. Volumes of beautiful photographs and incredible linedrawings accompany his observations. He was truly one of the great mayan pioneers. I am very happy to see that this century old major work is available and at a very reasonable price! This great work is a wonder to behold and, even at this rather hefty price any serious mayanist shoud procure this as soon as possible while its still available! ALAN J kANE

A HIDDEN GEM
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-17
This is one of those regional books that certainly should have gotten wider distribution and wider press. It was put together by a number of High School English students in Lebanon, Missoui and edited by Ms. Ellen Gray Massey. This is a large collection of personal recollections, stories, and record of how people in the Ozarks lived several generations ago. These are first hand recollections, most of the people recored in this work are now not with us. This is a record of wisdom, how-to-do-it on nothing and more. The are the articles the students published in their school magazine "Bittersweet," some of the best. Do not be misled by the age of the writers. This is a professionally written book, far, far better than most "adult" writers of the same genre produce. If you can get a copy of this work, grab it and hang on to it! Highly recommend this one.
