Lee Harris' mysteries are always extremely well thought out and involve interesting characters and story lines. This book is no exception. It's a lot of fun following Chris as she starts with nothing and goes on to solve the murder. The way Harris accomplishes this is very credible, because Chris is so well-defined and genuine.

13th Chris Bennett mystery is entertaining, pleasant outing

We have previously expressed our enjoyment of the prior dozen escapades of ex-nun Christine Bennett, an amateur sleuth, wife of a brand new (ex-cop) NYPD lawyer, and mother of young toddler Eddie. This springtime story occurs shortly after Father's Day, which witnessed the murder of one of the "Morris Avenue Boys", who had been friends since boyhood for some 40 years and regularly met for reunions all this time. Our leading lady was asked to investigate the murder of one of the nine (by one of the granddaughters), all of whom, except one out-of-towner who did not attend, nor one who had previously died, were obvious suspects and being investigated (more or less, we don't get the details...) by the police.

Despite many days of questioning the principals, the widow, the wives and anybody else who might have a shard of knowledge about the group, Chris has almost as many questions as she does answers. Yet her persistence has turned up a few leads that the police have as yet to discover. Thus a pretty good premise leads us through the life and times of the men, especially the murder victim, Arthur Wien, a famous novelist, to a fairly surprising conclusion. Wien's celebrity life, his women chasing, money borrowing, and messy divorce, fueled much of the grounds for motive, still difficult to find among the great chums. We picked up a clue mid-book that gave us an inkling of the outcome, an "eureka" not common to reading the stories in this series. Even with that precognition, we were held in suspense until nearly the final chapter when all becomes clear and Chris once again is the lever that elicits a confession from the apparently guilty party. Interestingly, whether it was really that party or not is somewhat left to the speculation of the reader.

We enjoy the very predictability of Lee Harris' stories of which we suppose some might tire. We have often characterized the leading lady and her family as wholesome and caring, creating dependably pleasant tales that don't need violence and gore, nor foul language or explicit sex, to capture and sustain our interest. Isn't that what a good mystery is all about ?!?!

This series are so well written! I am at a loss without another Chris Bennett story to follow up with. Like all the other "holiday" murders this is also a great book that keeps you hooked from the first page to the last. I finished this one in one day, I could not put it down. Keep them coming Lee!!

A group of boys living on the same block in the Bronx becomes friends, calling themselves the "Morris Ave Boys". They even wear jackets with colors to distinguish themselves from other students. Over two decades later, nine of the boys remain in touch. They hold reunions, bringing their wives to the festivities. Their next meeting is scheduled for New York on Father's Day.

Former nun and amateur detective Christine Bennett lives and teaches in the city with her police officer spouse. One of her students asks her to assist his grandfather, the prime suspect in the murder of one of his cronies, a fellow member of the "Morris Ave Boys". Christine begins to investigate and finds that she likes all the group's members and their spouses. Everyone seems nice and harmless. As she digs deeper, she begins to find flaws in their perfect behavior, concluding that one of them has ample reason to commit murder.

Lee Harris has the ability to successfully handle a large ensemble cast that leaves the audience feeling they intimately know everyone. The transition between Chris the detective and Chris the mom blend well together and actually enhance the intriguing story line. Even Ogden Nash, after perusing THE FATHER'S DAY MURDER, would say "The Bronx, thonx". Anyone who reads this novel or the other nine tales in the Bennett amateur sleuth series will feel fully entertained and anxious for the next book.

My first graders loved this story. Before I read it, they were saying how much they liked 1st grade better than kinder and this just wrapped it all up in a story. After reading it, we talked about what they hoped first grade would be like and what they hoped to learn this year.

A must for the beginning for first grade

After leaving the secure feeling of kindergarten, this book will calm the nerves and reassure students that it will be an exciting year in first grade. I read the book to my class and they continued to relate back to various parts of the book throughout the year. My favorite part is when the first grade teacher closes the read aloud book at the most exciting part, a trick used by most first grade teachers. It should be part of the beginning of the year ritual in every first grade class.

First Grade Stinks! is a wonderfully realistic look at the awkward transition from being a somewhat coddled kindergartener to being a first grader who must learn more and play less. Rodman's fresh, believable characterizations of Haley and her new teacher, Ms. Gray (!), are a true delight. Beautiful illustrations by Beth Spiegel add to a great reading experience.

As a former elementary teacher, this delightful book is one that warms my heart. First grader Haley desperately wants to go back to Ms. Lacy's kindergarten class where things are fun, that is, until she discovers the best thing about being in first grade. Author Mary Ann Rodman's sense of humor is evident from the first page to the last and my heart glows like Haley's orange sky whenever I thumb through this wonderful book. The illustrations by Beth Spiegel are perfect in every way, too! Perfect combination. Definitely a keeper!

Ms. Spiegel's illustrations add wit and charm to a lovely read-aloud experience that completely enchanted my students (now BIG second graders!) who remember the monumental transition from kindergarten to first grade very well. I look forward to more collaborations between this gifted author and her brilliant illustrator!

Again, Fluffy the classroom guinea pig gets into a spot of trouble when he comes face to face with a groundhog! Of course, all ends well, but the story is quite humorous and kids love to read this story, as well as the rest of the series. Fluffy and the other classroom guinea pigs are outside when Fluffy goes down the groundhog's hole.
The reader can share Fluffy's thoughts since he cannot talk, which usually leads to laughter. Fluffy is quite a character!
The series is gentle, non-threatening read in which the classroom guinea pig gets himself into all kinds of situations which always turn out fine. The situations can often serve as a springboard to discuss topics with your child or student (in this book, for example, you could use it to talk about stereotypes, mediation or so forth) as well as Groundhog Day. My students love Fluffy and often do not want to stop reading--they want to know what happens next. These books are level 3 readers, grades 3-4 really like them. They are easy to read, 3-4 chapters and 40-50 pages with larger print than most books. I highly recommend them to all kids, especially those who need encouragement to read. Funny, clever, good illustrations and enough silliness to keep it from being too sweet!
Get this book and read!

Fluffy is a guinea pig who spends his days in an elementary classroom. As part of their lesson about groundhogs and Groundhog Day, the children bring three additional guinea pigs to school to stage a GroundPIG Day race. Fluffy breaks away from the pack and darts into a hole that turns out to be a real-life groundhog burrow. There the groundhog admits that he's shy and doesn't want to face the media. Fluffy, our hero, takes his place. His family at home is later surprised to see Fluffy on TV that night, not seeing his shadow.

This is a fun Level Three book for 1st and 2nd graders. The illustrations are comical, and the storyline is amusing and discussion-provoking.

I like fluffy meets the groundhog.

My sister collects this series of mostly wordless picture books. The artwork is eye catching and the stories always good for a giggle.
The stories all have a similar thread: mom has to step out for a bit and Carl is charged with taking care of the daughter. Carl's initiates all kind of messy, naughty fun for his young master, but the mess is always cleaned up before mom gets home. Great P.R. for rotties!

Authors take the reader through a typical four day Deming seminar. They lead a reader thru a seminar through the eyes of an executive and the authors add their comments. Portions of Deming's seminar are legendary and the authors make you believe you're there for the marble test. Deming had approved this book and one of the authors had been a facilitator for a number of Deming led seminars. If you want an easy introduction to statistical control, this is the book for you!

Ideal introduction to Deming's approach to management

Review Date: 1999-04-11
One of few books about Deming actually endorsed by Deming himself - "It is a pleasure to commend this book to anyone for easy reading of the principles of management..." (Foreword). A step-by-step, practical introduction to the basics of Deming's management philosophy, far easier to read than Deming's own books, but not attempting to reach the depth of the system of profound knowledge outlined in "The New Economics." Of particular use to managers and students in understanding Deming, and to educators in preparing several famous demonstrations, including the Red Bead Experiment and the Funnel Experiment, with ample illustrations. This is not a lecture, but a self-paced "fun" substitute for "the real thing" (Deming's four-day seminars). Highly recommended.

A must read for Deming Devotees

This book is unique. It has a format that shows f three levels of the Deming philosophy. It deliniates the viewpoint of the man who led those amazing seminars, It brings the subject to earth with a narrative, and it supplies the wonder of a first-time participant. This is the book I give my students when they ask what Dr Deming was like.

Does anyone else perceive Frank and Ernest, especially Ernest, as the epitome of capable masculinity, like in movies from the 1940s? This book is unique in that it is written in language used in a diner. For example, is you order ham, they might say "Noah's son". If you are familiar with the name of Noah's sons you would guess this right off the bat!!! Also, my husband and I are Dr Pepper collectors and Dr Pepper is mentioned in the book. We were so thrilled when we read this and honestly, that is the only reason we bought the book!!! I do plan to read it to our young friends. I think they will get a kick out of the way it is written.

Diner Lingo for Kids and Adults

Review Date: 2002-03-13
Never much a fan of her Carl books, I nevertheless love this one, and am saddened to see that it's out of print. Frank (a bear) and Ernest (an elephant) make their living operating businesses while the owners are on vacation. When this pair agrees to run a diner, though, they must learn a whole new language--and we right along with them.

Kids love this, or at least my son did. For some time, we'd use diner talk from the book, calling donuts "life preservers," coffee with cream "a blonde" and vanilla milkshakes, "white cows." The language is revealed naturally in the text (though word mongers will love the glossary in the back); customers order in ordinary language such as "A tuna sandwich on toast, please and a Dr. Pepper with the ice left out" and then Frank calls the order to Ernest using diner talk: "Ernest, I need a radio sandwich down, and an M.D., hold the hail." It is fresh, funny and wonderful.

For the fun of the language, the warmth of these characters, whom no one seems to notice are an elephant and a bear, to the detailed illustrations (you could easily craft a stage set from these paintings), this book reminds us, as children do, that food, after all, is fun. Finally, the diner's retro design and the book's nostalgic feel might make it a fun read for grandparents, who possibly remember such places, to share with their grandchildren. I hope that this book will be reissued, as it is a truly pleasurable one.

Going to a restaurant is so much fun when you know the lingo of the cook! And just look at the concoctions Ernest and Frank came up with. Even though this book is out of print you must try to get a used one. It is well worth your child's imagination! The little boy who had my book took very good care of it.

Franklin's Valentines captures the true spirit of the holiday unlike many of the valentine books I've read where friends compete for the biggest or best valentine ever. I also appreciate that Franklin's predicament is realistic. I'm sure all of us at one time, or another have forgotten to bring something to school, or have lost, or broken items along the way. Children relate to Franklin's dilemma about feeling left out and embarrassed. The illustrations are bright and bold, which are certainly eye-catching. The author, Paulette Bourgeois, does a fine job of communicating her story without stretching the vocabulary, or being too wordy. There isn't any rhyme, or cadence to her text, but her sentence structure is easy to follow especially for young readers. Definitely a winner.

In the great tradition of life stories, Ms. Rodman mixes the minute with the grand scheme of things, and paints for us a large detailed canvas of color and pathos. It is a great way of learning about far off places, through the eyes of one who lived it, rather than race by in a glass dome capturing only the superficial. Helen has made friends far and wide, and must be well loved by all. Methinks that whosoever knows her has a better chance of linking up with all inhabitants of the planet in less than the proverbial six degrees of separation... for she has known people in the most remote areas of the world, as well as presidents, prime ministers and even dictators!

Well written, this is the moving autobiography of a an attache wife's journey through three decades of travel and living overseas. Told with wit and irony, the reader rides the waves of happiness and sadness of the author's life in a manner that is deeply personal, often uplifting, sometimes heart wrenching. One marvels at the diversity of her experiences in locations ranging from the jungle regions of Central America to Buckingham Palace. Of equal interest are her descriptions of the people who cross her path, whether they be from the farthest reaches of the earth to the height of celebrity (Helen Hayes and John Wayne as examples). It is a pleasure to recommend this book as a fascinating insight into the life of an American woman who, as a team with her husband, represented our country with integrity, commitment, and dazzle.

More than just a regional guide, this concise book is VERY well researched and very well written with clarity and obvious firsthand knowledge. The author has led us to many fun and memorable experiences in the wine country. Both her enthusiasm and direction to some of the more unique destinations and activities in this region have made for unforgettable moments for 2 different groups of French visitors. Pay attention to the tips and notes; every time the advice is right on. Extremely helpful and user-friendly, we would definitely trust any recommendations in this book when planning an excursion or making a reservation in Napa or Sonoma.

Best guide ever!

I used this book to plan my trip to Napa and it was great! We went to Bodega Bay and Fort Ross Park based on the recommendation and it was beautiful. One day we walked Calistoga and visited many of the shops in the book and had dinner at Kitani sushi which was very good. I could go on but bottom line it was a great book and made my trip!

I have (quite happily!) spent two great vacations in Napa and Sonoma Counties. This is the best guidebook I have found for that region.

There are a few things that make this guide very helpful. First, the author makes sure this guide is very user-friendly for first-time visitors. In other words, you get a true introduction to the Northern California area and what's special about it. You also learn which highlights are worth hitting, and what's worth ignoring.

Second, the visual aspect of the book is great: super-colorful, great layout, things rated from one to three stars, lots of little neighborhood maps, color photographs, etc.

Third, it's clear the author knows what she's talking about at all times.

Fourth, the book comes with a little map that--although it looks a little geeky--is actually quite helpful for finding wineries as you drive along.

Fifth, there's a nice little guide to San Francisco that is the last chapter. It's very well done.

Caveats: if you are a Wine Country veteran, you are too advanced for this book and should skip it. Also, you'll need a road map (such as the paper folding ones that you can buy in a gas station) as a supplement to the maps in this book, because the book's maps don't get the job entirely done.

Best book for my Calif trip

This pocket (or purse) size little book was far and away the most helpful of the many references I consulted for my recent trip to the wine country. Concise reviews of wineries, restaurants, hotels, and other attractions were on the money. Chapters for history buffs, non-drinkers, foodies, etc. were fun and revealed much more than the run-of-the-mill tourist traps. Helpful map as well. Added bonus - a great chapter on SanFrancisco! Used that instead of the specific SanFran guides for city part of the trip. Great value.
