Matthews makes morning devotions an adventure in learning. Not only do I get a scriptural/spiritual lift from her book, I also get a tidbit of history to insert into my conversation with others. I look forward to seeing what happened on each day and the wonderful way she ties it in with a Biblical lesson.

Very appreciative of the use of interesting stories from the past that connect so beautifully to the things we deal with today. Great devotional for anyone to begin or end their day with. The insight into timely truths from the bible is a gift from God Himself and it will continues to be a blessing to all who read it.

As a history buff, I really enjoyed The One Year on This Day. There are plenty of places to find an "one this day in history" account, but having a devotional that ties the events to the hand of God (as if it could be any other way) is inspiring and thought provoking. For instance, July 30 was the day (in 1956) that "In God We Trust" became the national motto. In her devotional, Dianne Matthews encourages the reader to ponder whether America really does trust in God and shows us what that means by quoting David in Psalm 28:7. And on September 6 (the date when Google launched), Matthews talks about our need to search and ties it to searching the Scriptures for answers.

A creative twist on traditional devotionals. I highly recommend The One Year on This Day.

My husband is a pastor, I am a speaker/writer, two of my children have degrees in theology, and my son-in-law is going for his Master of Divinity degree. My husband and I do devotions daily and the kids usually visit and join in on the weekends. Finding a devotional that doesn't get picked to pieces has been an on-going battle. We usually only get a few lines in and someone detects incorrect theology or some-such-thing and they cry foul. We've thrown more than one devotional away. We love the On This Day devotional! It's been deemed spiritually/Biblically accurate by my breakfast nook panel of judges, the history is interesting, and it's well written. Bravo!

This book is a very funny read. It has a great new way of looking at feminine hygiene products. This book is...F U N. I like the pictures of alternate uses which are a stich. This is a great book to have at your home for people to read while using the bathroom, cause let's face it that's where these products belong. The Author seems to touch on so many funny uses that it actually keeps you reading. I did not set the book down until I had read it cover to cover. It is easy reading, something the whole family can enjoy. Would love to see more from this Author. AAAAAAA++++++++

***DECLASSIFIED*** Selous Scouts-Top Secret War

This book should be a mandatory read for Non-commissioned officers and Officers serving in special mission units or special operations the world over. In the counter-insurgency / low-intensity conflict arena there are many valuable lessons to be learned from this text, and for the armchair historian or casual reader the story is still gripping enough to keep you enthralled to the last page. Basically this is story of the birth and death of one of the most feared insurgency units of the time, as told by the founder of this outstanding unit; Ron Reid-Daly. It covers the units training, selection, operations, and personalities of the unit with the war being the tool that propels the story and evolution of the unit. One of the most remarkable aspects of Selous scouts was their employment of pseudo-terrorist techniques, which were used to melt into know terrorist cells, to either eliminate the terrorist themselves or direct other assets to the known cells to be neutralized. While conducting these type operations the Selous Scouts maintained the cover of being a combat tracking (mantracking) unit, as to keep their true purpose under wraps from the rest of the Rhodesian Security Forces. I would also like to point out they were truly all trained tracks and maintained this capability to superb levels of proficiency. This book is a re-release and completely revamped version of "SELOUS SCOUTS - Top Secret War" (original title). If you read the original edition you will enjoy this one much better. Many areas in the book have been rewritten and their many additions and details added to the text. Many of the names of individual have added into this text, originally kept exempt for security and safety reasons. Also there are many new photographs added and the Illustrations are a lot crisper. One of the biggest treats in this edition is the added appendix covering; roll of honor, wing nominal roll, awards and citations. Bottom line is this version truly opens the door to this once `Top Secret" organization of combat trackers turned pseudo-terrorist specialist.

Pamwe Chete is without question one of the most interesting accounts of counter-insurgency operations ever written. LTC Reid-Daly formed the Selous Scouts in the early 1970s' at the behest of the Rhodesian Army Chief of Staff. What follows is the most famous (or infamous) counter-insurgency campaign in recent history. The Selous Scouts were the finest counter-insurgency force ever to take to the field and hunt down guerillas. LTC Reid-Daly has written an honest, detailed account that draws the reader's interest on the first page and never lets go. This book is a must read for any military historian. Reid's engaging book is chocked full of incredible stories about the incredible challenges the Selous Scouts overcame and the unbelievable but true successes they achieved.

LTC Ron Reid-Daly has written a superb book on the finest killing machine in Africa, the Selous Scouts. LTC Reid-Daly was the founder and commanding officer of this psuedo counter-insurgency force. The author gives us the insight into the bravery, courage, and brutality of his men while performing their operations. This group of highly skilled black and white operators wrecked havoc on the guerilla forces inside and out of Rhodesia. Because of his availability to intelligence Reid-Daly also gives the reader a overview of the conflict and the politics behind the decisions. This is a great read on special operations and Reid-Daly gives a great narrative of the missions and the background for them. This is a great story of an exceptional group of men written by an exceptional soldier and is a must read!

This is an excellent and comprehensive book on the Selous Scouts - a special forces unit based in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) during the 1970's. The book covers the history of the unit from the time its founder, Ron Reid-Daly, spent in Malaysia with C Squadron 22 SAS, to the end of the war. What is interesting is the high level of racial integration in the unit, and the use of 'turned' guerillas. In some cases captured guerillas were turned, briefed and back in the field within hours of capture.

While the unit's informal approach to standard military discipline made it shunned by the high command the unit had stunning military successes, especially with cross-border raids to target enemy bases.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in the bush wars in Southern Africa in the 70/80's and terrorism in general. Special forces soldiers could learn a lot from this book.

From the fall of Lucifer from Heaven, to the life of the patriarchs, this book reads like a top-rated movie. Like you're seeing these powerful events first hand. Like actually being there when there was war in Heaven between Christ and His angels, and Satan and his fallen angels. The Garden of Eden, and the creation of Adam and Eve from the hand of God comes to life. And just read about the faithfulness of Noah and the events leading up to the flood, for powerful conviction and Biblical insight. Volume one of her five volume set Conflict of the Ages: Patriarchs and Prophets, Prophets and Kings, The Desire of Ages, The Acts of the Apostles and The Great Controversy. All prime examples of why Ellen G. White remains my favorite non-Biblical author. I highly recommend them all.

I cannot recommend it enough!

If you want help to understand the Bible better, then this book is phenomenal! It is written in such a clear manner that everyone can understand. It covered the first part of the Bible through David's time.

I read the Bible as I was reading the book and found that it coincided with it. It opened my eyes to many of the events that happened during those times. Did you know that when Moses lead the people out of Egypt that God showed them the way as a pillar of a cloud during the day and was a pillar of fire at night and fed them manna from heaven every day except on the Sabbath and then he gave them double the day before so that no one would work on the Holy day. He also gave them water from the Rock of Christ. (There were like six hundred thousand or more to begin with and ended up being probably a million or more after 40 years of wandering) She explained that as long as the people kept their faith in God and didn't turn to sin they were protected by him. One of their enemies discovered that fact and decided the only way that they could defeat the Jewish people was by causing them to sin and then when the people, through their actions (sinning), rejected God and his teachings, then they were vulnerable and could be defeated. I find that very true today.

This is one of the best books I have ever read that explained to me why certain events happened and how and why they worshipped a certain way, etc.

I am not an Adventist and did not find that it promoted that Church necessarily, but rather found it enlightening for any person who believes in God or especially those who want to know more about Him. She does not promote the book over the Bible, the Bible is God's Word and that is first and foremost the only true and accurate message, but she does help us understand it better. I highly recommend this book especially if you read it and the Bible, like I did, together. It will bring you a much greater understanding of God and why he does things. She also has other books that she has written that are good. She wrote them a century ago and they are as relevant and appliable today as they were then. Enjoy!

In "Patriarchs and Prophets" Ellen G. White gives us important insights into the origins of evil and suffering, tells us the TRUE story of the origins and early history of the earth and of mankind(Yes, Virginia, God really did create the earth and everything on it in six literal days, and there really was a great flood!), and covers the history of God's people from Adam to David. All this she does with Tolkienesque skill, always pointing the reader to the Bible as God's word and to Jesus Christ as the only hope for mankind, singly and collectively. In a nutshell, the underlying message of this book is: GOD LOVES YOU!

I finished reading the online version of this book recently, downloaded from Ellen White's estate website. Chapters are about 11 pages long, so it was easy to read a chapter every morning as a devotional. It covers the chronology of the Bible from Creation to King David, and expounds on what the Bible says. Its very readable and inspiring to live a better life with God. Occasionally chapters lecturing on a good life, etc were interspersed with the events told in the Bible. .

One of the nice things about Beh Affleck's awful movie was it got people interested in this subject, and a some good books were written for those people to read. Better entertaining than the bomb that they were inspired by.

This one of the better ones. Nicely written. Very informative. Well illustrated both with original art and period photographs. A good read on this subject.

What I liked best about the book were its real-life pictures with facts in the captions. I enjoyed most of the book. My great-grandfather was at Pearl Harbor. I am glad to know now what happened and what went on day by day. It was easy to read in some parts, too. The writing, however, failed to hold my attention after reading only a few pages. Also, the book was about a couple of battles, not just Pearl Harbor. Still, I would recommend this book, especially to someone who wanted to know about our nation's wartime past.

A Fantastic Read

This book is terrific. I really liked the fact that it put the attack in the context of the Second World War. It gives you a good understanding of the conflicts in Europe and the Pacific and helps you to see why the attack was so pivotal. I've never been all that interested in books about war, but this one proved to be engaging and very moving. Susan Wels has done an outstanding job presenting the people and the politics behind this much-discussed event.

Pearl Harbor is a day that our nation will never forget, and this book helps those who weren't there understand why it is imperative to remember. This book draws up a landscape of history that is relevant to the incident, and discusses both prior and after effects of this notorious day.

The book is excellently done, encompassing informative material that allows people to understand many different aspects of the attack, and life at the base, both before and after.

If you enjoy US History, then this book is a wonderful addition to your collection. I keep going back to it to read about different aspects of not just Pearl Harbor, but World War II.

Since I am only 21 years old, it was difficult to grasp the human aspects of such an attack, but this book puts things into perspective.

I will always keep this book, not only as an informative guide, but also as a reminder of America's Darkest Day.

If there's a better comic strip out there, I don't know of it! The Crocs are especially hilarious with their bumbling attempts to "keel zeebas", and their wives never let them hear the end of it. Stephan Pastis is a genius; if he was as good an attorney as he is a cartoonist, he would never have lost a case.

Christmas Gift!

This is the second year that my husband celebrates the beginning of each day with the little desktop calendar Pearls Before Swine. After a great year of laughs in 2007, I just had to buy him another for 2008. The daily dose of humor is fantastic. I am a long time Pastis fan (the cartoonist/ creator/ scary person that owns this marvelous sense of humor), have read almost all the Pearls books, and am happy to say that his calendars are very fresh, and not just reprints of one of the books verbatim. Each day is surprising and fun! Older themes sometimes play through, but they seem like new material.

GREEN! After tearing a page to a new day J saves them and uses the back as notepaper. Not only is it a great use of the paper, but gives the recipient of the note a good laugh!

Not only a great introduction to the wit and off the wall humor and logic that Pastis displays in his daily strip, but a great mover and shaker to long time fans' dull normal days as well! A definite must have!

This book is primarily written for missionaries raising support but as a church planter it proved to be a useful resource as well. I didn't really use it the way it was designed - as a small group resource with discussion questions. But I did read through it and sometimes stop to think through the questions at the end of each chapter. In the overwhelming process of raising support, this was a very helpful and encouraging guide.

For missionaries that are responsible for raising their own support, this book is a must. Regardless if you are new to mission work and new to support raising or a veteran missionary with a continuing need to raise support; this book has definite and practical guidelines and tips that anyone will understand. The text not only brings the Biblical basis for raising support and deputation to light, but also illustrates how to train yourself.

The design of the book shows you, in example format, real life scenarios and encourages study within a self-paced atmosphere. Because of its design, many people can come together and use the group study portion of the book, which allows for discussions and other interaction. The examples are clear and in step-by-step format. It even shows you how to write letters and word them to be more effective.

I highly recommend this book to any and all missionaries interested in gathering financial or prayer support. Fund and support raising is not something I was excited about until after I finished this book. I was so pleased with People Raising, I recommended it to several of my close missionary friends who are in need of financial support.

Fundraising for most missionaries, especially new ones, is often a daunting and even scary task. Next to confidence in God's call to serve in missions and faith in God's provision for this call, this book provided me with the tools to get through two missions works. In clear and brief chapters, the book biblically defends the practice of fundraising and then lays out a clear path for fundraising that anyone can follow. Fundraising is still hard, and will challenge your faith in ways that few other things will, but the advice and plan laid out in this book will successfully guide you through the process. May God use this book to bless you in your missions endeavor .

This is a lovely book. It is well-written, and the author has done a wonderful job and included appropriate Scripture references throughout the story. I have read this book twice, and both times I was filled with wonder anew that Jesus Christ, the Son, loves me so much and is looking forward to the day when I can join Him in Heaven, along with my other saved siblings in Christ. This would be a good choice for a book club to consider, if they want a good inspirational book. The story is about a young single mother of two, Meg, who is searching for meaning in her life, and her journey to becoming a Christian. Meg's story is being written down by Jared, a recording angel in Heaven. Jared nicknames Meg, "Sunlight." This book is also a great choice for parents to read to their children, or for a husband or wife to read to each other. I also highly recommend it for those who are Sabbath school teachers, and for those who are curious about the seventh-day Sabbath of the Bible. Another choice would be for churches to present this story as a play about the end-times. Buy this book--it is a must-have for your inspirational library.

I really enjoyed this Novel. It is so spiritually uplifting, that you can feel the Holy Spirit all around you. It makes you want to read on and on and on. I would recomend this novel to anyone who loves the Lord, or who is searching for the truth about the Bible, and God

A Reference Every Budding Author Should Have

In moderating 2 of the larger listservs on publishing, I deal with many writers who are deciding who to approach publication. Many would be best served by a traditional publisher, but can't interest agents and editors. This is the book I recommend to them. It covers everything so well, and makes the what, how and why so clear, that there is seldom any need for more.

This entire series (the other titles include Publish a Book in 30 Days, and Bestseller in 30 Days) is quickly becoming a standard reference because so many people agree with me. Each book organizes the necessary tasks into 30 approachable bundles, with clear, concise instructions and explanations. There are no important details missed, and nothing extraneous to distract you. Ms. Reiss is not only knowledgeable, but also inspiring as a writer and as a speaker.

If you are, or know, an aspiring author, this book is a must-have.

I bought this book to help me take my book from an idea to a bookstore. Its 30 day format is great. It gave me an outline for how to find an agent and all the background to understand what an agent does and what motivates them. It was a great help to me.

If there were a rating higher than 5 stars Reiss would be a candidate. Her two books, this one and "Bestseller in 30 Days" together make up one book that guides the self publisher through all the steps and in order. Reiss provides a sequencing of necessary actions that is unique in the genre. No one writing on the subject, and this reviewer has read many of them, has put together the needed information so crisply and lucidly without excess padding.

Productivity experts know that the best way to accomplish a daunting task is to break it down into smaller pieces. Fern Reiss does this superbly in this book, taking the reader step by step through the task of figuring out how to present one's book to the literary world and successfully approach an agent. Since 1988, I have taught 150+ seminars on getting a book published and have published 11 myself, so that I can authoritatively state that Fern Reiss answers the top questions people have about this process and does so realistically and helpfully. Surprisingly (because of the 30-day format), the book is a good read, also. Highly recommended!

This is one of three books titled "The Publishing Game". Each of the books sets itself apart from the others by the subtitles "Finding an Agent in 30 Days", "Publish a Book in 30 Days", and "Bestseller in 30 Days". Taken together they are a comprehensive set of instructional resources for everything you might want to know to get your book published and marketed.

The areas covered in "Find an Agent in 30 Days" include why you might or might not want to use an agent, creating a title for your book, writing a pitch letter, finding a hook, wooing an agent, submitting a book proposal (and everything that should and should not be in that proposal), how to approach an agent, and agency agreements. What sets this book apart from similar ones is the tremendous amount of detailed, step-by-step information. This is a veritable cookbook of how to get an agent. As a result, you can feel confident that if you follow the directions you will get the same results every time.

Not only do you get extensive guidance on acquiring an agent but also several highly valuable appendices. For example, Appendix A includes additional books for additional study in specific areas of interest. Appendix B is an extensive list of reputable agents. Appendices C and D are detailed examples of a pitch letter and a proposal letter.

I have reviewed several books on publishing and this is one of the best on the subject of getting your book represented by an agent. "The Publishing Game: Find an Agent in 30 Days" is a highly recommended resource for anyone looking to sell their book through an agent.

I enjoyed the storyline very much, it's great for little girls. Encouraging for big girls too.
The artwork was a joy: creative, subtle and endearing. I particularly enjoyed Phyllis's Titanic pose in the midst of the spring zephyr. I bought five copies as gifts and one to keep.

Susanna Leonard Hill's Punxsutawney Phyllis tells of a groundhog who is not like others: she loves to splash in the cold river and tromp through the snow, and is happy year-round. This Feb. 2nd she's excited about a possible early Spring - but can she awaken old Uncle Phil to make his official Groundhog Day prediction? Jeffrey Ebbeler's whimsical color drawings lend to an inviting story.

A Girl Can Do Anything

This story is not only charming, but it sends the message that a girl can be anything she wants to be if she only believes in herself. As a mother of two young girls, I am always searching for a book that has this message - and the author does it so beautifully here. My four year old asks for this book to be read several times over each time we read it, which is always a sign that the text is lively and fun. But for me, it is the fact that the main character's wit, perceptions, and trust in her own instincts are the things that lead to her achievements that is the real measure of success in this book. I highly recommend it to all girls.

Set your goals and go after them!

Young Phyllis the groundhog has a goal: she wants to be the next Punxsutawney Phil, the weather-forecasting groundhog who determines whether or not Spring is on its way. She's been told that no female has ever had that role, and that fact doesn't faze her in the least. She loves the outdoors, and she's got a real talent for reading the signs of Spring. When her Uncle Phil doesn't quite make the right call on Groundhog Day, Phyllis proves to him that she's got what it takes. He officially names her his successor.

This is by far the best Groundhog Day picture book I've seen. The author and illustrator stay true to the facts and give us a beautiful storyline and amusing drawings to go with it. The final page of the book explains the Groundhog Day tradition. Other reviewers see in these pages a message of empowerment for girls; I see an inspiration to youngsters of both sexes to be true to their convictions and talents. And if they have the right stuff, they can succeed at anything.

See my Listmania list for other Groundhog Day recommendations.
