24 Hours In Cyberspace is truly the first book out of the publishing launch pad to capture the essence of 22nd Century human evolution in the emerging global electronic communication network, known as "Cyberspace". Kudos to the intrepid photojournalists, armed with their digital cameras, that found real subjects, then sent their scanned images back around the world to "Mission Control" to be collated into an instant book. The time capsule concept is definitely not new--but the cyber-method of manufacturing is what makes it an incredible milestone package. Brian Cartwright President & C.E.O. MediaOutfitters, Inc. This is the first book I did purchase thru Amazon. And, I must confess, this book is the perfect selection to anyone interested in "feeling" what the web means today all over the world. It's indeed extraordinary, too, that all the wonderful pictures that are included in it were taken IN THE VERY SAME DAY in a period of just 24 hours. Moreover, that day the pics were being published almost in real time in the special web site for the project. The book quality is coffe-table-like. And the CD companion is just a perfect match. I do deeply recommend it.

If you already have a good www browser like Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer, don't follow the instructions for installing the CDROM. It does a lousy job of searching for existing versions of Netscape. It overrode my newer version and installed version 2. Just point your existing browser at the cdrom and start reading it. Other than this, it's great! Ted Shapin

28 Of The Best Days Of My Life . . .

Review Date: 2007-04-30
Hi Reader! I wrote 28 Days of Poetry Celebrating Black History because our children need to know so much about the past in order to move forward into the future. This book not only teaches children about the lives of Frederick Douglass, Phillis Wheatley, Dr. Charles Drew, Benjamin Banneker or Buffalo Soldiers, but it also allows seasoned readers and Black historians to reflect on the lives of Black people in America in "Reflections Eternal," "After Katrina," "Fredom Without Revelation," and "The Sounds of Blackness."

This book also includes poems paying tribute to the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mrs. Rosa Parks, and Mr. Ossie Davis. In addition, this book displays the best of Black life, and it will encourage children and adults to press on. "We Shall Because We Must." This book brings to life reflections on Black history from the Middle Passage through the Civil Rights Movementand brings us all into the present.

I hope that you will get a copy of this book for your collection. Better yet, pick up a few copies for the young readers in your life no matter what the age, race, ethnicity, or gender. We all need to learn, appreciate, understand, and embrace the history of America. Purchase this book because it's motivating, educating, and liberating! Thanks for reading 28 Days of Poetry Celebrating "Our" History. Be on the lookout for Volume II in 2008.

We all know the familiar names: Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, all readily recognizable for the high profiles of their lives, as well as their contributions to the rich legacy of African-American culture. But, who can really say they know much about Charles Drew or Ossie Davis? Or just how much the Buffalo Soldiers really accomplished during their years of service?

28 Days Of Poetry is an impressive mosaic of the kaleidoscopic African-American experience. In it, Latorial Faison has breathed new life into the usual retellings of Black history that have often been reduced to quaint clichés and trite sound bites. The breadth and depth of her compositions are so comprehensive that 28 Days can - and probably should - replace most of the textbooks and other outdated materials currently serving as ersatz representations of the American Black experience.

The broad-based appeal of 28 Days will certainly endear it to individuals from all walks of life, but the focus of most of Faison's offerings is clearly on the young. She repeatedly implores the leaders of tomorrow not only to remember the struggles of their forebears that forged the freedoms they currently enjoy, but also to continue the fight to preserve those freedoms for posterity's sake. Witness the second half of the poem "B.L.A.C.K. H.I.S.T.O.R.Y.":

"Hope ran through their veins
In search of rights and freedom trains
Sons and daughters still dying a million deaths
Trying to be free of the chains
Others pressed their way across the
Racial divide of prejudice and hate
Yesterday"

And this moving section of "Slave Questions":

"Why use the whip
And change my name,
Tell all the world
That I've been tamed?

Why teach me words
And give me things
But give me not
What freedom brings?"

Passages such as these should strike today's youth with the same conscientious impact that Alex Haley's ROOTS had on a generation of young viewers in the `70s.

Faison's opus is not just a treatise on cries in the night and cracks of the whip, though. She provides refreshing insight on the lesser known names of some our culture's greatest contributors, such as Phillis Wheatley and Charles Drew. Even the unsung inventor Benjamin Banneker gets the star treatment in "Who Was Benjamin Banneker?":

"If you visit the nation's capital
Or hold a watch in your hand
Think of Benjamin Banneker
Another great African American"

Such tributes serve as reassuring reminders of the towering giants on whose shoulders we stand.

But make no mistake: just as easily as Faison seeks to soothe, she also seeks to stir. Many of her pieces are brashly unapologetic, like this passage from "After Katrina":

"Horrific, embarrassing,
A travesty it is...
When a government waits
To aid its own citizens.

And where was America's
'Great White Hope'
Securing the Middle East
From dictatorship's scope"

Or this one from "Irreconcilable Differences":

With their played out and pimped out politics
Washington is filled with a sad lot of lunatics
So I speak to and preach to my fellowmen
About the need to politically be "born again"

Polemic stances such as these, of course, won't surprise anyone familiar with Faison's other works - namely her contributions to the anti-war (Iraq) movement, "Poets Against The War." In fact, many of the pieces in 28 Days can easily serve as revolutionary fodder in their own right. Consider this passage from "A Slave's Revolt," detailing Nat Turner's insurrection of 1831:

"they bled a dark people of life running through
their veins, mocked them with husbands, wives, and
mulatto baby cries until it was, to no surprise,
a justified rebellion, a righteous revolt, a song
of silent amen's."

At its heart, 28 Days Of Poetry bravely continues the ongoing task of reminding us all that African-American history and American history are one and the same, conveyed most effectively in these lines taken from the opening poem, "Celebrate":

"Acknowledge Black history on any day.
Allow freedom to ring in the noblest way."

While she may only have intended for it to be celebrated during Black History Month, Faison's collection is a treasure that MUST be hailed every day of the year.

Say it loud...

28 DAYS OF POETRY CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY, reminds me of a Reader's Digest version of a stirring novel. It houses an eclectic collection of poems celebrating the legacy of gifted, charismatic, African-Americans. With added accounts of slavery and the civil rights movement, Ms. Faison paints vivid pictures of the south during a time when America was split in half. Readers will be able to lose themselves in biographical poems that highlight Black inventors, innovators, and leaders. The poems are varied in how they inspire; 'B.L.A.C.K. H.I.S.T.O.R.Y.' fills the heart, 'S.L.A.V.E. Q.U.A.R.T.E.R.S. fuels the mind, while 'Buffalo Soldiers' gives a prideful account of some of the first men of color to fight for America's freedom.

Ms. Faison uses the short biographies to capture the attention of young readers. From noted celebrities of yester-year: Benjamin Banneker, Charles Drew, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, and Phyllis Wheatley to more current names: Dr. M.L. King and Rosa Parks, readers are given a treat. This is an empowering collection that adds value to the endurance and stamina of a people who have transcended and continue to rise.

Kudos to Ms. Faison for such inspiring poems that give honor to whom honor is due. Persons desiring a succinct accountability of African-American history will regret not having a copy.

I too am an author who likes to write poetry about Black History and I could not put this book down. It even taught me a few things. This book should be distributed amoungst schools, especially during Black History Month (February) and Poetry Month (April).

As you read each poem, you can feel Faison's pride as an African American come through. In this book, she cover's topics like Hurricane Katrina, and The Million Man March. She also teaches us about the accomplishments and achievements of people like Phillis Wheatley, Benjamin Banneker, and Charles Richard Drew just to name a few. If you don't know who these people are, I suggest you pick up a copy of "28 Days of Poetry Celebrating Black History", and prepare to be enlightened.

My favorite poems were, "Slave Questions", "Buffalo Soldiers", "Riding the Bus with Rosa Parks" and "I Thought I Was Free". Here are a couple of stanzas from my favorite of all, "Reflections Eternal".

"We built our hope on nothing less
Than God-given rights and His justice
Now we can stand proud and free
As we vividly reflect on our history

We've come so far, yet the road is long
As the struggle continues, we must stay strong
For each reflection etched in our minds
Is hope and power to survive these times"

Many times we try to find a way to remember important things that happened in the past; what better way than in verse? Latorial Faison's 28 Days of Poetry Celebrating Black History, helps to remind us of the important people that contributed to the African American history.

Each verse carried a piece of history, whether it was centuries ago, or a few years ago. Can you say that you know about Fatou, Benjamin Banneker, or Fredrick Douglass? After you read Faison, you can say that you do. The great thing about this selection of poetry is that it can be equally appreciated by children of all ages.

Faison's 28 Days of Poetry Celebrating Black History will give families something to enjoy together. I recommend this to anyone that really has a passion for poetry, and to parents that want to expose their children to new things and the people of African American history and poetry.

This book is an amazing resource for anyone anticipating a move or just dreaming about the possibility. The personal anecdotes and lessons learned are enlightening and fun, but this is far more than just an enjoyable read. It is a comprehensive and well-organized toolkit to get you ready for and through the process of moving. The beauty of this book is that it is a working document that keeps you on track. You won't read it and put it aside--it will become your constant companion leading up to, during, and after your move. This book is invaluable--I would have been lost without it!

I think that this book is unique in getting someone more organized for a move, how to pack, how to prepare budget for move, etc. It is in workbook style, thus has many checklists and charts to fill in. The only part that you would have to do more research on own is to know which moving company to choose, and to decide between professional mover vs. finding company that allows you to pack but they will drive the stuff for you vs. doing it completely on own and renting truck yourself. Most of the info that they provide may be found on websites but nicely organized and fun to read in ring-bound version. Also would have been helpful if had chapter dividers.

Moving can be a nerve-racking experience regardless of the situation. However, if you read "29 Days to a Smooth Move" it not only makes the whole process easier, it makes it pleasurable. The book's practical yet clever suggestions make moving simple.

This book manages to cover millions of details that I, the average mover, overlooked. Since this was my first move, the budgeting section was considerably helpful; it saved me a substantial amount of money. I would have never had the time to find all the answers to my questions without this book. While trying to decipher between which moving book to purchase, Kozik and Maras's book offered numerous unique qualities. For instance, it allowed me to stay organized through its lists and important dates portion. From this whole experience I realized there are three necessities I needed while moving cross-country; water, gas, and "29 Days to a Smooth Move".

It was great to come across moving advice just at the right time in my life. I'm a single gal packing it up to try something new. After reading 29 Days to a Smooth Move and realizing I wouldn't have to sacrifice any limbs as collateral to pay for moving expenses, my plans were set in motion. I followed the book's recommendations and saved a considerable amount of money on my move.
And the chapters on saying goodbye- priceless. The suggestions made me think about how i was going to go through with it. The helpful hints made the transition a whole lot easier than i thought it would be. So, if you're planning a move, local or long distance, but might be anxious about all that goes along with the idea, this is a must read!

This book will keep you "moving right along"!

I would have had no idea what I could and could not pack in a moving van if it wasn't for this book! The worst part of moving is cleaning and sorting, and the tips in 29 Days made the process easy and helped keep me on track. I never would have expected it, but this book had me in stitches the whole time, which made moving much more enjoyable. If I ever move again, the first thing I'll do is get out my copy of this book!

The author does a good job of selecting the best quotes by the general authorities on finding a suitable marriage companion. The questions are equal to other marriage books on the market, however, the author goes a step further by supplying spiritual questions that should be asked. Questions that dig deep into a person's believes, values and spirit are lacking in other books on the subject. Therefore, I would recommend this book for couples that want questions that have depth into the soul. As a Bishop I have counseled many single adults considering marriage. Now I have a great book to recommend to them. I look forward to her other books.

I originally bought this book while a college student in 1991 -- and I still refer to it now, almost 15 years later. Anytime my weight creeps up again, I pull this book back out and spend another 32 days on the plan specified in this book. The first time I tried it, I went from 195 pounds to 175 pounds in less than 2 months. I highly recommend this book.

If you're the type (like me) who can't deal with counting calories (consumed or burned), and just want someone to tell you "Eat this for breakfast, that for lunch, this for dinner, do these exercises 3 times a week. You're done." -- this is the book for you.

I've done the 32 day plan twice and have had great results both times. (Obviously the fact that I've done it more than once means I have not done well on the maintenance side of things, but that's a different issue).

My only complaint with this book is with the recipes (yes, it even includes ALL the recipes of what you're to eat), many of which include gloppy sauces made with corn starch (like the "Mandarin Chicken" -- yuck!). Generally, I would simply bake or grill the meat in those recipes, forget the sauce, and have a little extra fresh vegetable.

Be forewarned, though, that the "super-slow" exercises are HARD. But given that the workout only takes 20 to 30 minutes, and is only 3 times a week, most guys should be able to do this.

Good luck!

Dr. Darden provides a clear step by step process to lose weight slowly and steadly. This includes both meal plans and a brief intro to weight training. As a person who trains consistantly with weights I never concerned myself with the counting and monitoring of calories until I gained 35 pounds in 7 months. I tried Adkins, good, but strength decreases too much. Also tried extensive cardio, helps, but for me, calorie restriction was needed. Been on the 32 day diet for 26 days so far, reduced my weight from 221 to 207. Waist size from 40 to 36.5. Strength is down about 20%. However the hit you take in the ego from the loss in strength is made up in the feeling of "old" clothes fitting again. Two recomendations, if you intend to begin the diet take before photos, Darden says to do so, I didn't , wish I had. Second, Darden discourages using the diet with a spouse, I have and it has been very convenent. It's hard to eat clean while your spouse is eating pizza. Females if you use this plan you may want to reduce the recomended calories by about 15% since it is inteded for men. GOOD LUCK

'365 Ways to Motivate and Reward Your Employees Every Day--With Little or No Money' is a terrific book for all managers and business owners. This book teaches you how to think like an employee, rather than thinking like a big wig. Then it gives you all the suggestions you need to motivate your employees and keep them motivated for an infinite amount of time. And that last part is really the key to this book. You don't want to motivate your employees for a day or a week. You want to keep them motivated for as long as they work for you.

I enjoyed reading the parts of the book that explained the importance of motivation, but I was even more impressed by all of the great techniques. This book is written in a fun, easy manner that made me excited to get to the `good stuff.' The gift ideas are all very clever (like supplying morning coffee for a year) and so are the suggestions on how to make the office fun (like adding a "Whine Cellar"). I especially liked all of the ideas on how to give employees time off of work, because it honestly never even crossed my mind to reward productivity with down time.

Overall, I think this is a terrific book and I can't wait to implement these ideas in my workplace. If you are a business owner or manager, I strongly recommend that you read this book. Even if you only follow a few of the suggestions, I think your company is bound to improve.

This is one of those books where you expected one thing and are pleasantly surprised to receive something else. Well, not entirely something else, there certainly is a list of 322 (not 365!) ways to motivate your employees, but that's the last half of the book. The first half is a great business book on motivation and the necessity to create a motivational work environment.

In fact, I found the fist half of the book more interesting than the second half and I say that without knocking the second half whatsoever. 365 covers motivational theory, internal and external motivational factors, management methods and also provides a series of motivational questions to ask employees and new hires to ensure you are able to provide the best motivational environment for their needs.

The second half of 365 covers a number of easy-to-do motivational rewards. While most businesses won't be able to do all of them there are a number of cheap and easy ideas that every business should implement. Not stopping with their own list, the book concludes with a monthly calendar of special days that will allow you to make your own motivational rewards.

Regardless of your work environment, every company can use a few motivational tips. 365 provides 322 of them and a framework to create hundreds more of your own. This is a book that won't be put on my bookshelf, but will remain close by as a reference for things I can do to reward my employees.

My neighbor told me about this book and I was so intrigued I bought it the same day. I was not disappointed. Mr. Shipe writes in a conversational tone that makes you feel like you are sitting on a porch listening to your father tell stories. A good mix of humor and hard truths that paints a vivid picture of life in the early 20th century. I would recommend this book to any person who learned a lesson while they were growing up; you can be sure that Mr. Shipe learned the same lesson and included it in this book.

It is such an enjoyable book

I read this book after a co-worker told me my grandfather is mentioned in it. After I began reading it, I couldn't put it down. I was hooked not because my grandfather was mentioned, but because it was such an enjoyable read. The details Mr. Shipe remembers are incredible, I feel like I was there. I, too, can't wait for a sequel. I am going to buy copies for my cousins. If Mr. Shipe reads this, I would love to be contacted by him for more information about "the Orchard" I heard so much about in my childhood, but never saw.

First of all, I really enjoyed reading this book. I wanted to know what it was like growing up on a farm in the West Virginia/Maryland area. The author gave me a good picture of it. As an adolescent I had worked a couple of summers on a farm in New England and the author is only 4 years older than I am so I could identify to some extent with his life and the times. The book was well-written and easy to follow. Just to mention two things which interested me: 1) what it was like for him witnessing his pet calf killed for beef, and 2) eating every part of the pig they butchered. I'll quote about 2): "We ... loved brains mixed in fried eggs. Most people gag when they hear that we ate this, but we loved it. We didn't waste any parts of the hog". That's farm life - close to the realities of nature. The first reviewer mentioned something about reference to religion. Fortunately for me, I didn't feel there was enough talk about God and religion to mention. They were good people - I particularly appreciated the anecdote about how his father refused to attend church once he heard the minister speak badly of the blacks - and the religious feeling emanating made me think of Frank Lloyd Wright's saying, "I believe in God only I spell it N-A-T-U-R-E".

Book Review: ALL MY BORN DAYS, Stories by a Sharecropper's Son
Historical Autobiography by Kenneth R. Shipe

The late Senate Chaplain, Dr. Richard Halverson, always ended his sermons by saying: You go no place by accident this week. Wherever you go, Christ is sending you. You are no place by accident this week.Wherever you are, Christ has placed you, has planted you. And so we believe that in September 2003, through several campground evacuations in the wake of "Hurricane Isabel" we were `hand-picked' to meet this burgeoning Christian writer, Kenneth Shipe at the Forest Lake campground in North Carolina. Which one of us was responding to God's whisper? We may never know, but our lives are changed because of this chance meeting, and their (Ken and his wife, Dottie) persuasive discussion of combining Christian service to Habitat for Humanity with retirement. They also showed us the fruits of their labor: the self-published historical autobiography, ALL MY BORN DAYS, Stories by a Sharecropper's Son.

Shipe's crisp writing style, punctuated with descriptions of the stark poverty of his childhood, brings the reader directly into the day-to-day life of a sharecropper-in ways that you would not learn in any school textbook. It's one thing to know, intellectually, that a sharecropper owns nothing: the entire family is beholden to the landlord; the rhythms of the seasons determine good or bad crop years. The other side is revealed in his carefully researched narrative of how they eked out an existence in the 1930's and 40's -- a sharp contrast to the lifestyle in 2004. Today's high-tech families can choose instant gratification in news or entertainment with the simple click of the remote control or a computer mouse. When Shipe was in elementary school, the family had no electricity, so their primary news source was his weekly reader subscription and the portable radio, if they had fresh batteries. Doing farm chores before and after school, Shipe always found time to read whatever he could, consumed as he was with an inner passion for learning, while still following his mother's example of knowing the things that pleased God.

Shipe weaves his Christian testimony through countless vignettes describing his parents' dependence on God and the power of prayer as they survive the Great Depression, and a flood that forces them to flee their home, to mention just a few examples.

He tells in heartbreaking detail how long and hard he had to work, saving money for a bicycle and later a sled. And, how quickly these prized possession were nearly shredded before his eyes as he and his friend learned first-hand the laws of thermodynamics, skidding at breakneck (and unbrake-able) speed down the mountain. His other escapades remind me of the little boy who was overheard praying: "Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am."

Perhaps God's master plan included `a fleet of Angels' to protect Ken Shipe. Why? Because He knew the plans He had for him in his adult life: his faithfulness would be demonstrated as a Marine fighting in the Korean War, while his intellectual abilities to safely launch spacecraft would result in the safe return of many American astronauts.

While others might rest on their proverbial laurels, spending their retirement years on the golf course or sitting around the pool, not so for Ken and Dottie. They sold their home 6 years ago, and live full time in their Recreational Vehicle (RV), and have now completed 19 builds for Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) through RV Care-A-Vanner's or the Family Motor Coach Association. "You can take the man out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the man" certainly describes Ken Shipe! His immersion in strict, God fearing family values is apparent in his family roles as husband, father, and grandfather. Yet an integral part of his life revolves around the opportunity to serve others, through local churches and by building houses.

In the Preface he gives two reasons for writing this book:

1. To preserve a written record of his personal recollections, genealogy research and family remembrances of his sharecropping lifestyle in the 20th century in the Allegheny Mountains.

2. To encourage others to record some verbal descriptions befitting their own family name and to add substance to the skeletal framework of their family tree.

I've picked up his challenge last Christmas by tape recording oral interviews with my 87-year-old Mother in Ohio. What will you do?

This book is an amazing blend of history and personal experience. I couldn't put it down! I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style, which comes across as matter of fact, and at the same time very unique and entertaining. I often laughed out loud. Mr. Shipe's memory is incredible and his descriptions bring every scene to vivid life.

When I got to the end, all I could say was, "When is the sequel coming out?"

Anyone who is interested in history from a personal point of view should read this book.

As I read the story I couldn't help but remember so many of the things Mom was talking about. As child # 10 I wasn't there for all of them but even so, most of the stories in the book were told to me from the time I was a small child. It was wonderful to hear about all the times God reached down and worked miracles. And then, as I got older, to see then first hand. I am truely blessed to have such a family.

From time to time a book comes into ones life and moves both heart and soul. I too was there, I too saw those people that I came to love and admire, saw their difficulties and triumphs. If ever I doubted you (this goes for both Joe & Millie Dawson and my own amazing parents), if I ever doubted your heart and devotion for these people and for your Lord, well I don't any longer. You have inspired me again; you have moved my spirit in a way that I thought would never be again. Truly these "ordinary people" were and still are quite remarkable. Read this book and have your heart and soul touched like it has never been touched before...

If you are interested in missionary work at all, especially in South America, this is a "must-read". I sat in awe of the simple faith that inspired such an amazing story. This book is the American missionary side of the FANTASTIC book, "Spirit of the Rainforest: A Yanomamo Shaman's Story" by Mark Andrew Ritchie. Today, most of us wait until the exact right time with the exact right funding and support and all the common sense we can muster before we move. The Dawsons show us that when God calls, moving in faith is more important that moving in logic. Highly recommended!

Reading this book is like having a conversation with a wonderful friend!! One who possesses loving insights, and an egar willingness to share what she has learned through her observations and personal experiences. You need only take a moment (or an hour) to 'look' with the inner eyes of your spirit, not just your physical eyes, to realize and recognize the daily expressions of God's great love and many blessings the author is reaching out to share with you. You MUST read this book and give a copy to anyone you love! One read-through is not enough.

A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR AN ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY PIONEER!

I'm the owner of an Entertainment Publicity firm in Las Vegas. While on a trip to Los Angeles last week, I wandered into a memorabilia shop and purchased what appears to be the original, unedited manuscript to this book. I've been reading it for the past two days and am absolutely enthralled with Mr. Cossette's story. Starting with his first break into the Entertainment Industry and proceeding through decades, I've been even more humbled upon realizing that I have worked with some of the people and organizations that he makes reference to in his earlier days in the business. For an Entertainment Industry member to a fan of all things Hollywood, this is an absolute must-read!

Behind the scenes peeks into the inner-workings of show business are often self-congratulatory, full of tired insights and recycled anecdotes, and little more than glorified puff pieces. The arrival of Pierre Cossette's "Another Day in Showbiz" is all the more a truly welcome addition to the biography canon in that it both offers a plethora of quotable stories and a real attempt by its author to explain how an insider rose from being an outsider to becoming the proverbial insider without losing humility or a wicked sense of humor.

Particularly striking is Cossette's willingness to reveal his failures in addition to his many successes. A man whose winning track record includes celebrated productions in Las Vegas, on television, on Broadway and throughout the music world could easily have omitted his duds, but his candidness helps make the book resonate all the more as an instructional primer on the entertainment industry. The clear lesson here -- that it is persistency that can and does succeed -- is hardly unique to Cossette, but his cheerful yet no hold's barred spin on it gives the reader a glimpse that they could never have been privy to prior.

Getting rejected by Angie Dickinson with a romantic overture might not be something most would boost of, but the author's ability to see it as a reality check and to move forward is a perfect example of his self-deprecating style. Then again, his success with woman has obviously been quite good as witnessed by his glowing words for his current wife. In fact, his clear love for her, as well as for the other key woman in his life, is one of the book's strongest suits. Despite, or perhaps because of, his tremendous success, the obvious tenderness of the man serves as a winning example of a "nice guy finishing first."

To call him a true renaissance man may sound like a cliché, but it is perfectly apt. He knew everybody before they were anybody. Among the many highlights of "Another Day in Showbiz" are lengthy sections on his career in Las Vegas (where he not only began the tradition of the lounge singer, but booked Ronald Reagan and nearly every star of the era), an odd but telling encounter with Howard Hughes, his dealings with superstars ranging from Andy Williams to Celine Dion, his Broadway success with "The Will Rogers Follies" (including some interesting Marla Maples' anecdotes), the founding of his Dunhill Records label, and of course the book's main highlight -- his producing the Grammy Awards telecast for 35 years.

The manner in which he was able to convince a reluctant television network to air the Grammys live for the first time nearly 35 years ago is a perfect example of juggling, risking and trusting your guts. Incredible as it may seem today, there was no real interest from the network brass in such a telecast. Again though, Cossette's persistency and obvious smarts paid off. Cossette has been rightly referred to as "The Godfather of the Grammys," and anyone who reads this book will probably want to kiss his ring -- and want to go into "Showbiz."

A great read about Showbiz
