I have read this book more times than I care to remember and enjoy it again, every time. Delderfield draws you in to the characters' lives until you begin to care a great deal about what happens to them. I hate to finish it every time!

I loved this book! From the first page to the last I was unable to put it down. I have read it several times since and have always been able to find something new. It is a great way to introduce a whole area that many people may not be familiar with. I recommend this book and in fact, all of Delderfields books, to anyone who wishes to investigate a whole new world.

An inspiring story of the life of a devoted educator.

While reading this book, I found myself engulfed in the life of the lead character. I was able to connect with his life on many levels. Thus it was easy to understand the development of his relationship to his profession. The title is inspiring in itself. 'To Serve Them All My Days" is a profound posture to take as an educator. It implies that one will put the best interests of their pupils at the forefront of their decision making process. This is a must read not only for educators, but for parents, law enforcement, politicians , etc.. Any 'people oriented' professionals should read this novel. I am reading this book before the start of every school year!

I think this was one of Delderfield's last books [he died some time in the early '70's] - the setting is a boys school in Devon during the years between WWI and WWII. The Masterpiece Theatre series was fantastic, but for some odd reason is simply not available. I've tried contacting various video sources, including PBS, and cannot put my hands on the video. I just wish they would re-play it.

Each verse of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is depicted on its own page along with a large, gloriously-hued watercolor illustration of the verse. Even cooler is the two-page spread at the end of the book, which brings all of the pictures together and shows how they flow into one another like a mural. The art in the book makes it a wonderful gift idea for the holidays. I actually ordered 3 copies of this book, one for our family and two to give as gifts to other family members.

The Twilight of the Day is a rivoting story that is probably closer to the truth that anyone would want to believe. Once you pick it up you cannot put it down. It is a "must read" for anyone who knows and cares about what happened in Viet Nam. I am looking forward to reading more from Ian O'Connor.

This book was a very good story about what might have happened to POWs in the Viet Nam conflict. A lot of those held by the North Vietnamese were highly educated pilots and the premise for the book is right on! Excellent reading and definitely food for thought. Top drawer and fast paced reading.

This novel is a refresher course that the bad guys are still out there with sinister plans to conquer the world by whatever means possible. It's not enough that Qaddafi has this oil niche and the economic power that goes with it but he allows insane subordinates concoct fiery schemes. The notion that Vietnam POW's were ruthlessly mistreated and in the middle of this plot kept me reading on and on. Good luck with any future writing endeavors

As a new real estate investor, I am always looking for ways to learn my trade and this one hit the mark. I read this book in less than 24 hours from purchase and intend on keeping it close by for every loan in the future. I now feel armed to at least hold an "intelligent conversation" with my mortgage broker on our next closing and know what to ask. While I found that my broker is on the "up and up", which I figured was true, this book gave me peace of mind knowing that I can confirm that I chose a good company for our investing "team".

Finally, the mortgage industry in a fish bowl!

This book was very helpful. I would think anyone who was getting ready to buy a house would want to spend the $20 to read it. I had no idea there were so many line items on a good faith estimate that were negotiable before I found this out through Rick's work. If you know someone buying a home, this would be one terrific present.

Painter X for Photographers by Martin Addison
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-05
This book is an in-depth and thoroughly detailed discussion of the various features of Painter X. But more than that, it is also an excellent step-by-step how-to for using these features to create a very satisfying painting from a photograph - with almost limitless potential variability. While artistic effects are certainly involved, this is not a book for the graphic artist who has the ability to create a painting starting from scratch on a blank canvas. For that one might consider Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook by Jeremy Sutton, or the Painter X Wow! Book by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis.

The only flaw is one found in the otherwise useful accompanying CD. While most tutorials were easily viewed, some were obscured by a red screen, with an error message stating that the problem was due to an error using Macromedia Projector.

But don't let this one flaw deter anyone interested in this book. The book is excellent.

The author also writes for the San Diego U&T; many of these trips are culled from his archives.
He knows the area, and he has an adventurous spirit. He maps out routes that are out-of-the-way, ones that you wouldn't think of yourself, like out to a desert town, but also more urban trips. The attention to detail is key; miles, times, markers, etc.

A great guide if your new to the area, or, if you've lived here for awhile and want to experience a part of San Diego you've missed.

I had the chance to see and hear this author at a local community college. In addition to his appearances on a local television station, he has written for the Travel section of the San Diego UNION-TRIBUNE. No other county in the United States offers beach, mountains and desert all within its boundaries. And such treasures as a historic gold-mining town turned picturesque destination, an almost-unspoiled desert, a world-famous observatory, an authentic Mexican village. the first California mission are also contained here. One can almost spend a week or more on a vacation without traveling far from San Diego and still feel that he has been to unique places.

The recipes in this book are some of the best available if you are serious about eating a healthy diet. They are not only vegetarian but they eliminate the refined oils and sugars which are such a major factor in causing diseases like atherosclerosis, heart disease, adult onset diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. They are the recipes used at the Newstart lifestyle program where they get excellent results with just diet and exercise. The recipes are delicious; we use them in our home all the time. I highly recommend this cookbook to my patients.

I kept saying how sad I was because my upcoming wedding budget wasn't enough to hire a wedding planner, so my sister bought me this book for Christmas. I now feel just fine about not being able to afford a planner because this little book really does take you through everything step-by-step unlike any other wedding book I have bought. The Ups and Downs of Being Round

It took me a while to get started because of my crazy schedule, but I decided to make increasing my confidence a priority. From that day on I would wake up every morning and read one chapter a day.

Valorie Burton organized the book in manageable chunks so that you can focus on one area of self-improvement at a time. Self-improvement is really not the best word to describe it though because she used scriptures and prayers to help us to realize that being confident is not just about self-confidence, because we cannot do it alone. It is all about having authentic confidence which is very much dependant on your faith in how God works through you.

I enjoyed the confidence exercises that she recommended for each day. They were simple and they were not intimidating, but they made a big difference.

Review Date: 2007-08-17
If you're ready to move forward in life but feel like something's holding you back, here's the book for you.

Life coach Valorie Burton offers this action-oriented, step-by-step guide that reveals secrets to unlocking authentic confidence. Unlike self-help books that lead readers away from God, the author writes, "Authentic confidence is about what God can do through you, in you, and for you."

Each of the 28 short chapters is packed with Scripture and includes personal stories from Burton's life, as well as the hundreds of people she's counseled and surveyed over the years.

She'll help you identify the real source of your fears, learn to speak up, give yourself permission to be imperfect, and stop competing and comparing. After reading this book, you'll feel rejuvenated, ready to face the next phase of your life with the confidence you need to make your dreams a reality.

This is one of the most engaging and brilliant books I've ever read...and all of it true.

I used to read a few pages of this book before I went to bed, aglow with the comprehensive level of research and quality level of writing. From the disaster of Dunkirk to the siege of Leningrad, from the pivotal Battle of the Coral Sea to the systematic genocide of the Jews and other peoples, this book has it all. It remains as objective as possible in telling the facts without resorting to rationalization (e.g. there is no attempted mitigation of atrocities).

I honestly can say that I have read few more interesting books, and it is certainly the best non-fiction book I have ever chanced upon, telling one of the greatest stories the world has ever known with the utmost clarity. 10/10

A chance to live (or re-live) World War II
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-10
World War II: Day by Day is a strikingly useful compilation of important events duing the second world war. It's unusual in two ways: First it focuses on ALL important events in those years, so you can find out, for example, when women started painting stocking seams on their legs as well as the date Rommel captured Tobruk. It's more than a list of important battles and important American political events--this book covers the various home fronts and the various battle fronts.

The second reason this book is invaluable is that it is organized by date, rather than subject. You can glance through the pages and have a decent thumbnail sketch of what happened in any month of the war. This makes the war years understandable without wading through a million books.

The layout is similar to news releases, so each page looks like a newspaper (although they are not authentic newspaper articles).

It must have taken years to compile this book. Serious students will find it useful as will those who just want a general snapshot of important events.

It was Thanksgiving 2001 when my Aunt came for a visit and gave a copy of Arta's book to my mother, sister, and me. "Read the story on page 45" she said, and to our surprise there was a description of a man we all loved and miss very much. "Mr. Bob" was my uncle. The husband to my aunt, brother to my mother, and always my sisters and my favorite uncle. I will always be grateful for Arta's story and hope someday to say thank you in person. Her stories tug at your heart strings and bring a smile to your lips. What a remarkable woman!

In Wrong Feet First: A Gift Of Stories For Your Inside-Out Kind Of Days, Arta Banks presents a heartwarming, entertaining, and occasionally inspiring collection of true stories illustrating and celebrating life in good times and tough times. A single mom with six children (five of whom are adopted), Arta has also taken in kids born with drug addiction, fleeing abusive homes, and experienced having her youngest daughter diagnosed with HIV when just two and a half months old. Drawn from Arta's personal experiences and journal recordings, Wrong Feet First is candid, emotionally moving, and a testament to the resilience and endurance of the human spirit -- as well as a celebration of the joys that balance sorrows, the power of hope, and the beauty life has to offer in even the most humble of circumstances.

This book made me see things in a different light. I'm sure anyone who reads it will share my feelings! Go ahead! Put your "Wrong Feet First"!
