When you begin to read this book, you will not be able to put it down. The Holy Spirit has spoken to me so cleary through His word, and this book. I have personally given away appoximately 30 of these books to family and friends, and have heard of God's faithfulness to each of them through this book. Weirsbe has a way of sharing, but ALWAYS references the Bible.
You will love this book. Great encouragement for whatever your need, situation, dilema.
I keep 10 of these books at home, always ready to give out.

Over the years since I received a copy of this book in 1983 as I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I have given away numerous copies because I felt the other person needed it. I
t is the only book I know that encourages without "happy get all better" stuff. Some diseases or situations really cannot be expected to have a happy ending, but that is when encouragement is most needed. If I could give it 10 stars--I would.

Yet another great book by WWW

His books have been in my collection of favorites for years. I ordered this one months ago and have been reading a chapter once a week as an extra devotional. He uses scripture to parallel life experiences and balances it out with encouragement for all sorts of perils in this walk of faith we all take daily. This book is a pick me up when I have had a troubling day. Its a dash of salt when I have missed my communion with God on rushed days. You don't just sit down at an empty table with this book. WWW brings you to the table where he seats you next to Christ and you are in absolute communion with the Lord Most high. Great literature for anyone regardless of where their walk is with Christ.

You can't go wrong with a book by Warren W. Wiersbe! He surely has a gift for delivering God's messages, quoting appropriate scripture references, and writing clearly so you understand and can apply what you've learned to your own life. I can't wait to order two of his other books: Praise, Promises & Prayers and With The Word.

I am of course partial. You see, Dixie is my mother. While the stories in this book may seem far fetched and even somewhat unbelieveable, I am a testiment that life was unique in my youth. She writes from the heart, and continues to this day to be a pillar of wisdom, enriching the lives of those she touches. While this book is well into it's third decade of circulation, its contemporary style has superceded its date. It is as appropriate reading today as it was in the seventies. You go mom!!

This book is certainly a "page turner". I've loaned it to five people, so far, who say the same thing. Dixie is a writer who leaves you wanting more. She is so believable and you feel the concern she has for her fellow man. She is a "special lady". She handles this gift she has with integrity.

A Book Worth Searching For!!!

It's a shame that this book is no longer in print, as it's an awesome look into the way psychics use their gift to help law enforcement catch the "bad guys"! It also allows one to see just how hard it was (and probably still is) for psychics to be taken seriously, as well as the lack of recognition given to them by the very people they've helped.

In "Casebook of a Psychic Detective", the author describes how she became involved in psychic police work to begin with, and then goes into great detail describing the cases she's worked on, and the ways in which she's received pertinent information for each one.

This book is definitely a page turner - in fact, I haven't been able to put it down since I started! If you are at all interested in psychic phenomena, then I highly recommend this book for you!

Electrifying images with intense feeling. Fine photography by Raeburn Flerlage and superb editing by Lisa Day. What a moving adventure to turn each page. I felt like I was in the audience and part of each photograph.

An evocative look at the Blues.

The blues are not just notes and lyrics, instruments and people, but, more a frame, a view of the world, and of life, from inside and under.

Raeburn Flerage's evocative photographs and commentary, partnered with Lisa Day's luminous editing, have given us all a rare opportunity - a chance to take that view through Flerage's camera lens and rembrances.

Black and white - could the pictures be anything but black and white and all the muted tones of grey inbetween? And could the comments be more laconic and straight to the heart of the Blues?

I do not think so. I cannot reproduce the sensation in this review, but Flerlage's description of a 1964 performance of Sam House, tells the tale and paints the picture: "After a brief ingratiating smile, his face change dramatically, first slowly but then swiflty as the lyrics changed he projected those terrible moments that haunted his memory. When he sang "Death Letter Blues," he saw his dead girlfriend, "lying on the cooling board" and it made your own blood run cold. The scene was reflected in his face, sounded in the violent guitar strokes and his painfully forced voice. Unforgetable!" Unforgetable indeed when those lines are coupled to the stark photos of that performance by Lisa Day's skillful use of words and pictures, white and black and grey.

We weren't there. We can't really know the feelings. Like Sam House's comments on hearing his lyrics sung by an up-and-coming, young White blues pretender - "Those are my words all right, but it sure ain't my music." - we can't know it unless we are inside, down and under. "Chicago Blues: as Seen from the Inside" takes us about as close as we can get visually. Turn the pages with real blues in the background - "Unforgetable!"

This is the best photo documentary of a music culture I have ever seen, the photos are so alive you feel you are there, you remember when you were there, even if you never were. The text is as beautiful and intimate and truthful as the photos. The scope is big and very complete. I spend hours, looking and looking again, reading and re-reading. I close the book and the music stops.

Flerlage Is A Great Guy And Knows His Stuff

I met Flerlage a few years ago in Chicago when I was doing some research for a now-forgotten project and I went through his collection of fantastic photos with him in his apartment and loved every second of it. The composition and lighting in these pictures is beautiful, and he catches something of the energy of the performances that is pretty amazing. Flerlage isn't one of these precious blues prigs (e.g., Steve Calt) who spends all of his time trying to protect some pet thesis and trashing everyone else's work relentlessly, but is a real dude who lived jazz and blues on the South Side in a way that few other writers or photographers have. The result is what you see -- great photographs, on the ground, in the clubs with the people who made the scene as wild and energetic as it was. If you want to see pictures that give you a real taste of the power of jazz and blues in teh 50s and 60s, get this book and linger over these fantastic photographs. You won't regret it.

Someone sent me a copy of this book...what a find. Whether you're into Blues greats of the 50's and 60's, or just into good photography, this is worthwhile. Some of the greatest black and white photographs I have seen. Puts your right in the smokey clubs of South Chicago, and in the artists' face. Sensitively accomplished and carefully assembled after 40 years. Photographer Raeburn Flerlage had a remarkable feel for the soul of the music, and a love of these peformers, and was granted unusual access to their lives. It shows in the photos, both candid and peformance, if there is a difference here. A lovingly crafted collection, and a time capsule of a age fled, a city now changed, that gave us an American art form. Done by a photographer with the soul of a poet. Excellent notes by Flerlage, now in his eighties. For music lovers, a must have. Ditto fans of Chicago.

Handling Persecution by Faith

After LIVING ON THE RAGGED EDGE, COMBAT fAITH had also been a very influential book in my life in my personal pentecost in 1986. The government had been trying to brainwash me into becoming a homosexual so that I would fit in better with the people in Chemistry. But I would not give in because of the Holy Spirit and faith in God.
Hal had discussed how tha faith of POW's had enabled them to withstand brainwashing by their captors. Except that this is America we're talking about and not North Korea!
Hal also witnessed about how God had striken dead a college professor who had tried to block him from speaking on his campus. I had looked back at my life and I also could see that God has dispatched several of my enemies to the grave-including some big name politicains or their relatives. I began looking in the Bible and could see a precidence for this in Scripture. God is no respector of persons, the Bible says.
Also the thing about Moses having lived in obscurity as a shepherd for 40 years after having killed an Egyptian government official and having fled Egypt as being a time of testing and character formation, also impressed me. Somwhow, I don't believe that God is through with my life. Maybe I will live to fight better another day?!

Essential Spiritual Guidance for the Struggling Believer
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-08
In Combat Faith, clearly the author's finest effort of his prolific career, Hal Lindsey has produced the ultimate work that clearly illuminates the historical and spiritual connections between the Old and the New Testaments. Those of the Jewish faith should read it not only as an aid to help them understand their own faith better, but also with the purpose of gaining greater understanding regarding the question of why Christians place such a high value on the Old Testament. And believers in the New Testament will find themselves challenged and refreshingly inspired to renew their commitment to their faith and journey with God, which is no small feat in our day and age. Yet Hal Lindsey has done all of this here with explosive agility and humility. No amount of hyperbole is needed to convey the value of this book-a mere sampling of the various chapters will transport the reader on a journey that takes him from the arid desert of Sinai where a group of 3 million wanderers struggle to believe in a God who has proven His love for them significantly to a man who's death on a cross 2,000 years ago solidifed, once and for all time, that the same God is just as concerned and committed to all of His creation. Combat Faith offers more than merely an elucidation of the oft-pondered and plundered subject of faith; it is virtually a how-to manual that shows, through example after enlightening example, the specific steps that should be taken in order to have the most profound and fulfilling experience with the Creator of the Universe. It's an adventure that will stay with you forever.

"The issue of faith pervades every aspect of our relationship with God and our service for Him," writes Hal Lindsey. Faith is given to us to be used and this book helps you to use it effectively. Consider Lindsey's comments on Hebrews 11:11 "By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father because he considered Him faithful who had made the promise." Lindsey notes, "The more we learn about God, the more we become certain of the things for which we hope." He says our confidence in God grows as we know Him better. He goes on to add that learning about God is a result of spending time with Him.

His discussion on the faith and works issue is helpful. Along similar lines he talks about resting from works and not being subject to the law.

On the Providence of God: "God never allows anything to happen in a beliver's life by accident." While on that subject he mentions that God's power is released when we realize we are helpless on our own to bring about God's will. As most experienced Christians realize, "Sometimes God's leading for our life doesn't make sense at all from the human viewpoint." As one reads the Bible, one sees this has historically been the case, but God's ways are higher than our ways and he knows what is best.

This book promotes God dependency, not man self-sufficency. It achieves the goal of the author, i.e., it teaches you how to use the gift of faith God has given you.

This book gets to what is essential in our walk with God

This book in the stylings of Lindsay has to be his best. It teaches apart from anything else what is needed by us, and what is wanted by our God. Total faith and dependency on him. Lean on him, despite of what we see. God said" he would not leave nor forsake us." he did not say everything would always be pleasant. take hold of this faith, find the biggest Goliath in your life. And slay it by the confession of your faith, and the power of our Almighty father.

What an accessible guide to touring Connecticut. There are so many ways to choose your trip for the day: there's the alphabetical index for a quick check on a restaurant, museum or whatever; the more detailed index by town, listing specific details such as annual events; a table of contents listing the towns by region and county; and a thorough introduction on how to find your way around the book. Historical questions at the beginning of each town pique your interest, and the events in each town are listed by month. It couldn't be an easier or more interesting and delightful guide, in fact it's a tour by itself.

When the weather cools we are going to go see the waterfall. We love to take day trips, particularly in the Spring and Fall -even the winter- and this book is perfect for that. It's well organized and jam-packed with all the information you need to make a last-minute day trip with panache. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone living in the tristate area or who plan on coming to New England for vacation. It should definetly be in the personal library of all Connecticut residents.

Excellent prose and documentation of this historic event.
The book's top secret memos, the diaries of the foot soldiers,
and the immense planning and undertaking of this invasion, as recorded in this book, provided me with an indelible impression
and an appreciation of my parents who were members of this worlds "Greatest Generation."

I will recommend it to any young people who are beginners in the study of WWII and want to understand the history of their country and why we now feel and live the way we do especially
from a military and human point of view.

This book is incredible. It can't be described in words. It is basically a giant scrapbook of d-day - the liberation of Paris. It has pop-out maps and documents that where written to the soldiers e.g. by Eisenhower. If you read a book on world war two you get the normal information, but this book has detail, pictures - and what I call reading easter eggs - inside of it so that it really brings d-day + to life. I know amazon is selling the book for about $30 dollars, and thats probably how much to make the book, but it's educational value and its interest value to me would be over $200. I have to say this is the best book (it's really a scrapbook) that I have ever read. The other good thing about the book is you can pick it up any time and read a section that you seem to be interested in (even though all the sections are interesting). This to me is one of those things that I can show my kids and my grandkids in the years to come. Buy this book and you won't regret it, or miss a single penny that you spent.

Put 'D-Day' into Amazon's book search and you'll come up with over two hundred titles and I expect most will be about the momentous events in June 1944. This book covers them as an 'experience' and I think it does it rather well. Don't be put off when you see it only has sixty-four pages because it includes a lot of other things as well. There are fifty plus printed items which are facsimiles of maps (one is a German map thirty by twenty-two inches) military reports, logbooks, posters, soldiers diaries, a newspaper page, letters and more, they are either stuck on the pages or in envelopes to be removed and examined. One of the nice things is that the reproduction of these extras is particularly good and they do really help to create the experience.

Each spread covers one event with a mix of text, photos (with good captions) a map and other graphics all beautifully presented in a scrapbook format. If I have a criticism it is that the maps, which have a lot of information, are rather small so I had to use John Man's Atlas of the D-Day and Normandy Landings to fully understand the flow of events. While looking at this treasure of printed material you can also hear on the included CD (seventy minutes) the voices of men who were there and made it happen.

This is almost a unique publication but while looking through the Amazon list I came across 'Our finest day: D-Day: June 1944' (ISBN 0811830500) which also presents historical documents as reproductions to be handled but I'll stick with this D-Day experience, I don't think it can be beat.

When I first read this book, I thought it was "rushed". Everyone seemed to be hurrying through the day. Then I realized that's pretty much like our own "day care days". I also loved that the daddy in the story is pretty much the primary care giver...he gets the kids dressed, takes them to day care, puts them in bed, etc. My husband is like this, also, so it was great for my daughter to see the daddy taking the kids to day care just like her daddy does. It is one of my daughter's favorite books...She especially loves the pictures and always insists on "naming" all the kids at the day care. (ex. "This girl in the picture is me, this one can be Ann Marie, that boy is Reed".)

Kids love it.

This beautifully illustrated book tells about the day in the life in a toddler as he prepares for and goes to day care. The vivid illustrations are full of life and children love looking at them. The story is full of warmth and tenderness. The kids I teach at the preschool I work at love comparing our child care center to the one in the book. This is a great book for any child care center or any family who has or is preparing to use a day care facility.

I am a toddler teacher always looking for great new books to read at circle time - this is it! The story follows a simple format easy enough for 2-3 year olds in day care to understand. The illustrations are vibrant and easy for children to identify with. This is a wonderful book that lets children know that their world is important to us and that the emotions they feel are natural and quite common. This book is requested by my students on a daily basis!

Title: The Day I Killed James

Author: Catherine Ryan Hyde

Rating: 5/5

Good:
From the cover, to the first page, all the way to the end, this book completely captivated me. The idea was fresh and new and it brings forth an interesting idea of how much blame to put on yourself when something happens to someone close to you. The main character is deep and emotional, and while she tries to push people away she really wants someone to push through the wall she's built. I love Theresa, she's a character I can relate to very easily, and she's also likable in her own way.

Bad:
I'm having a difficult time coming up with something bad about this book... It was truly amazing and wonderful, the type of book I could read again and never get tired of.

Everyone carries around some sort of guilt or regret. Most don't carry the burden that Theresa does.

James is her next-door neighbor. He's attractive, but a bit too bizarre for Theresa. And he's in love with her. He left for two years for the military and wrote her every week. She thinks she sent him maybe two letters in return.

Theresa is in love with her boyfriend, Randy. They've been dating for nine months now. However, he's just told her that he wants to take another girl, Rachel, to their friend Frieda's end-of-school party. There have been on-again and off-again periods with Randy before, but this is a first. Theresa lets him go, and in retaliation, she asks James if he'd like to go to a party with her. She is up front with him that it's purely for show, but James is thrilled to have the chance for even a pretend date with Theresa.

While James is off getting Theresa something cold to drink, Randy comes crawling back to Theresa, realizing he made a mistake. Theresa tries to think of James, but before she knows it, she and Randy are in a heavy makeout session. It's only after she hears James' motorcycle pull away that she starts to worry what he may think.

But that's not the worst of it. James doesn't come home, and Theresa goes to the cops. Not long after telling the cops he's missing, they come knocking on her door to tell her that his motorcycle has gone over the side of a cliff.

No one is to blame, but Theresa believes it's all her fault because of what James saw. Not able to handle the guilt or the remorse, she leaves home to reinvent herself.

Living in a beat-up trailer, a young neighbor girl starts hanging around. Before Theresa realizes it, life is changing again, and the thought-provoking actions of an eleven-year-old slowly brings Theresa back to the living.

What a powerful story. Theresa is determined to keep James' memory alive out of guilt. But Ms. Hyde weaves the story beautifully and the reader gets to see the slow healing process that Theresa, and also Cathy, her young neighbor, go through. You will surely laugh and cry with the story, but will come out much better for it on the other side. Just like Theresa did.

What an exceptional book! I've read all of Catherine's work, including her Y/A novels and have to admit I have enjoyed them ALL thoroughly. "The Day I Killed James" is no exception. The book is beautifully written, has a strong female protagonist, and a voice that draws you in IMMEDIATELY. What an exciting journey of self-discovery! I was hooked from the first line. The novel is set on the California Central Coast and the descriptions of Hearst Castle and the little coastal town of San Simeon are breathtaking. If you like down to earth characters that take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotion, then this book is for you, and especially for anyone who loves good literature. If there were more than five stars available, I'd give 'em.

Theresa tells James that their party date is a one-time thing. She's only using him to make her maybe-ex-boyfriend jealous. It works, but Theresa breaks James' heart in the process, and he drives his motorcycle of a cliff, dying of suicide. Theresa's entire world collapses, and she blames herself for James' death. She severs ties with her old life, and tries to reinvent herself, all in an attempt to atone for what she did to James. Slowly though, through meeting a girl very similar to herself, Theresa begins to realize that she can't keep running away forever.

Once again, Catherine Ryan Hyde writes a beautiful story about learning to live with what you've done. The story was incredibly sad, because Theresa kept blaming herself for killing James, even though it wasn't entirely her fault, and even though Theresa's only eighteen-years-old, this ages and matures her. Theresa's character and journey to self-forgiveness is very realistic, and I was so relieved with the hopeful ending. The Day I Killed James is truly a heartfelt, well-written, and unforgettable story, and one I will not likely forget.

The Day I Killed James is probably my favorite of Catherine Ryan Hyde's novels so far, and I most definitely recommend it. The topic of death is never an easy one to write about, and I rank this novel high among others of this topic, including Saving Zoë by Alyson Noël, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, and Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin.

I would almost go so far as to recommend any of Catherine Ryan Hyde's books before I have read them. There is always "the moral to the story is" in each of her books that really touch me. Although this is a book for teenagers and young adults as are several of her books, I find it doesn't make any difference, it is still suitable for all ages.
I have experienced all the emotions attributed to Annie in the story as I lost an adult son to suicide four years ago. I know guilt, it was my best friend for the first two years. I now know about depression but didn't recognize it soon enough. And forgiveness figures into all of her stories.
I definitely think teenagers should read this book, it will give them insight and understanding if they ever have to deal with losing a classmate or friend to suicide. It will surely make them more conscience of what they say or do that could have a lasting effect on others. In the whole scheme of things, we are responsible for others and their wellbeing. "The Day I Kill James" will explain it very well and I believe if it is Hyde's first book you read, you will seek out all her books quickly.

Well-written, fast paced. Captured the dignity of the victims of this toxin and the subsequent bureacratic cover up. And to think this happened within the past 55 years!! It would be interesting to know if there have been similar outbreaks since and how they were handled.

I won't go over the story, as other reviewers already have. I am actually still in the middle of the book and wanted to find out more information about it online. This book pulls you in immediately. Wonderfully written - historically intriguing - with facinating detail. A refreshing read, even though it was written over 40 years ago.

This book caught my eye in the college library while I was researching the topic. I didn't put it down for the two days it took me to read it. It covers not only "historical ergotism" (which has been deemed the culprit of the Salem Witch trials and other witch hunts by some) but also the case of the 1950's Pt. St. Esprit poisoning in France, which was attributed by the local authorities to a mercury pesticide. Read it, be absolutely amazed, not only at the events, but at the "official judgement" and subsequent injustice of the later rulings towards the poisoned survivors of that fateful night. I also recommend Mary Matossion's Poisons of the Past for more info on historical ergotism.

This is an amazing book. The historical account is fascinating. I am also floored by how well Fuller wove in a multitude of personal stories, gave a rich account of a very complex incident, then beautifully encapsulated the 15-year legal tragedy that followed the original tragedy. You don't come across stories like this every day, and you certainly don't often come across treatments of them that are this good.

It's not written at a sixth-grade level -- a plus for me -- but nowadays I doubt an editor would let Fuller get away with all the French phrases and excerpts he put in the book. Back then I suppose authors could assume they had a more sophisticated readership. I liked the sprinkling of French, sometimes even original letters (translated to English, of course), but if you don't know any French at all, you might want to read this with a dictionary at hand.

An in-depth analysis of ergotism in France in 1951

This is an extensive analysis by a journalist of the outbreak of ergot poisoning in Pont St.Esprit, France (Provence) in 1951. It is based on personal interviews and documents, as well as on discussions with the doctors involved. It is perhaps the most complete case study of mass ergot poisoning in literature. It is very valuable to any historian wishing to understand one of the most feared and puzzling diseases of the Middle Ages.
