t is the only book I know that encourages without "happy get all better" stuff. Some diseases or situations really cannot be expected to have a happy ending, but that is when encouragement is most needed. If I could give it 10 stars--I would.

A Book Worth Searching For!!!Review Date: 2005-07-16
In "Casebook of a Psychic Detective", the author describes how she became involved in psychic police work to begin with, and then goes into great detail describing the cases she's worked on, and the ways in which she's received pertinent information for each one.
This book is definitely a page turner - in fact, I haven't been able to put it down since I started! If you are at all interested in psychic phenomena, then I highly recommend this book for you!

An evocative look at the Blues.Review Date: 2000-06-25
Raeburn Flerage's evocative photographs and commentary, partnered with Lisa Day's luminous editing, have given us all a rare opportunity - a chance to take that view through Flerage's camera lens and rembrances.
Black and white - could the pictures be anything but black and white and all the muted tones of grey inbetween? And could the comments be more laconic and straight to the heart of the Blues?
I do not think so. I cannot reproduce the sensation in this review, but Flerlage's description of a 1964 performance of Sam House, tells the tale and paints the picture: "After a brief ingratiating smile, his face change dramatically, first slowly but then swiflty as the lyrics changed he projected those terrible moments that haunted his memory. When he sang "Death Letter Blues," he saw his dead girlfriend, "lying on the cooling board" and it made your own blood run cold. The scene was reflected in his face, sounded in the violent guitar strokes and his painfully forced voice. Unforgetable!" Unforgetable indeed when those lines are coupled to the stark photos of that performance by Lisa Day's skillful use of words and pictures, white and black and grey.
We weren't there. We can't really know the feelings. Like Sam House's comments on hearing his lyrics sung by an up-and-coming, young White blues pretender - "Those are my words all right, but it sure ain't my music." - we can't know it unless we are inside, down and under. "Chicago Blues: as Seen from the Inside" takes us about as close as we can get visually. Turn the pages with real blues in the background - "Unforgetable!"

Handling Persecution by FaithReview Date: 2006-07-09
Hal had discussed how tha faith of POW's had enabled them to withstand brainwashing by their captors. Except that this is America we're talking about and not North Korea!
Hal also witnessed about how God had striken dead a college professor who had tried to block him from speaking on his campus. I had looked back at my life and I also could see that God has dispatched several of my enemies to the grave-including some big name politicains or their relatives. I began looking in the Bible and could see a precidence for this in Scripture. God is no respector of persons, the Bible says.
Also the thing about Moses having lived in obscurity as a shepherd for 40 years after having killed an Egyptian government official and having fled Egypt as being a time of testing and character formation, also impressed me. Somwhow, I don't believe that God is through with my life. Maybe I will live to fight better another day?!

Instruction on Spiritual WarfareReview Date: 2004-06-29
His discussion on the faith and works issue is helpful. Along similar lines he talks about resting from works and not being subject to the law.
On the Providence of God: "God never allows anything to happen in a beliver's life by accident." While on that subject he mentions that God's power is released when we realize we are helpless on our own to bring about God's will. As most experienced Christians realize, "Sometimes God's leading for our life doesn't make sense at all from the human viewpoint." As one reads the Bible, one sees this has historically been the case, but God's ways are higher than our ways and he knows what is best.
This book promotes God dependency, not man self-sufficency. It achieves the goal of the author, i.e., it teaches you how to use the gift of faith God has given you.

The book's top secret memos, the diaries of the foot soldiers,
and the immense planning and undertaking of this invasion, as recorded in this book, provided me with an indelible impression
and an appreciation of my parents who were members of this worlds "Greatest Generation."
I will recommend it to any young people who are beginners in the study of WWII and want to understand the history of their country and why we now feel and live the way we do especially
from a military and human point of view.

Each spread covers one event with a mix of text, photos (with good captions) a map and other graphics all beautifully presented in a scrapbook format. If I have a criticism it is that the maps, which have a lot of information, are rather small so I had to use John Man's Atlas of the D-Day and Normandy Landings to fully understand the flow of events. While looking at this treasure of printed material you can also hear on the included CD (seventy minutes) the voices of men who were there and made it happen.
This is almost a unique publication but while looking through the Amazon list I came across 'Our finest day: D-Day: June 1944' (ISBN 0811830500) which also presents historical documents as reproductions to be handled but I'll stick with this D-Day experience, I don't think it can be beat.

The Day I Killed JamesReview Date: 2008-08-11
Author: Catherine Ryan Hyde
Rating: 5/5
Good:
From the cover, to the first page, all the way to the end, this book completely captivated me. The idea was fresh and new and it brings forth an interesting idea of how much blame to put on yourself when something happens to someone close to you. The main character is deep and emotional, and while she tries to push people away she really wants someone to push through the wall she's built. I love Theresa, she's a character I can relate to very easily, and she's also likable in her own way.
Bad:
I'm having a difficult time coming up with something bad about this book... It was truly amazing and wonderful, the type of book I could read again and never get tired of.

James is her next-door neighbor. He's attractive, but a bit too bizarre for Theresa. And he's in love with her. He left for two years for the military and wrote her every week. She thinks she sent him maybe two letters in return.
Theresa is in love with her boyfriend, Randy. They've been dating for nine months now. However, he's just told her that he wants to take another girl, Rachel, to their friend Frieda's end-of-school party. There have been on-again and off-again periods with Randy before, but this is a first. Theresa lets him go, and in retaliation, she asks James if he'd like to go to a party with her. She is up front with him that it's purely for show, but James is thrilled to have the chance for even a pretend date with Theresa.
While James is off getting Theresa something cold to drink, Randy comes crawling back to Theresa, realizing he made a mistake. Theresa tries to think of James, but before she knows it, she and Randy are in a heavy makeout session. It's only after she hears James' motorcycle pull away that she starts to worry what he may think.
But that's not the worst of it. James doesn't come home, and Theresa goes to the cops. Not long after telling the cops he's missing, they come knocking on her door to tell her that his motorcycle has gone over the side of a cliff.
No one is to blame, but Theresa believes it's all her fault because of what James saw. Not able to handle the guilt or the remorse, she leaves home to reinvent herself.
Living in a beat-up trailer, a young neighbor girl starts hanging around. Before Theresa realizes it, life is changing again, and the thought-provoking actions of an eleven-year-old slowly brings Theresa back to the living.
What a powerful story. Theresa is determined to keep James' memory alive out of guilt. But Ms. Hyde weaves the story beautifully and the reader gets to see the slow healing process that Theresa, and also Cathy, her young neighbor, go through. You will surely laugh and cry with the story, but will come out much better for it on the other side. Just like Theresa did.

Wonderful Character-Driven Novel for Readers of All AgesReview Date: 2008-06-14
Moving and BeautifulReview Date: 2008-06-10
Once again, Catherine Ryan Hyde writes a beautiful story about learning to live with what you've done. The story was incredibly sad, because Theresa kept blaming herself for killing James, even though it wasn't entirely her fault, and even though Theresa's only eighteen-years-old, this ages and matures her. Theresa's character and journey to self-forgiveness is very realistic, and I was so relieved with the hopeful ending. The Day I Killed James is truly a heartfelt, well-written, and unforgettable story, and one I will not likely forget.
The Day I Killed James is probably my favorite of Catherine Ryan Hyde's novels so far, and I most definitely recommend it. The topic of death is never an easy one to write about, and I rank this novel high among others of this topic, including Saving Zoë by Alyson Noël, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, and Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin.

I am never disappointed.........Review Date: 2008-06-04
I have experienced all the emotions attributed to Annie in the story as I lost an adult son to suicide four years ago. I know guilt, it was my best friend for the first two years. I now know about depression but didn't recognize it soon enough. And forgiveness figures into all of her stories.
I definitely think teenagers should read this book, it will give them insight and understanding if they ever have to deal with losing a classmate or friend to suicide. It will surely make them more conscience of what they say or do that could have a lasting effect on others. In the whole scheme of things, we are responsible for others and their wellbeing. "The Day I Kill James" will explain it very well and I believe if it is Hyde's first book you read, you will seek out all her books quickly.

Fascinating mystery, well-told human dramaReview Date: 2000-05-24
It's not written at a sixth-grade level -- a plus for me -- but nowadays I doubt an editor would let Fuller get away with all the French phrases and excerpts he put in the book. Back then I suppose authors could assume they had a more sophisticated readership. I liked the sprinkling of French, sometimes even original letters (translated to English, of course), but if you don't know any French at all, you might want to read this with a dictionary at hand.
