This is a perfect book for Gramps to read to visiting grandkids (I did get permission from the parents). It not only entertains children but is enjoyable for adult readers as well. Plus it allows for lots of discussion about invented, imaginary monsters like trolls and ogres. A further plus is that the book if chuck-full of new words that 6 year olds will want to understand. If you are looking forward to reading to a visiting 6+ year old and are looking for something that would be fun, Awful Ogre and Monday's Troll, both by Jack Prelutsky, simply cannot be beat.

An Awfully Exciting Adventure...

Jack Prelutsky, author of more than 30 artistic creations, takes the reader on a journey through the daily rituals of an ogre's pleasantly gross life. Prelutsky describes all of the ogre's activities from sunrise, when his pet rattlesnake wakes him, until late into the night, when he has a nightmare about a beautifully tranquil place. Using fabulous double-page spreads, Zelinsky illustrates how the ogre enjoys a violent storm, tends to his garden of carnivorous roses and overblown mold and takes supper at a local restaurant where his titanic appetite is satisfied with triple helpings of everything (including the silverware, plates and tablecloth). The 18 rhythmic and witty verses are brought to life with remarkable detail using watercolor and pen and ink. This combination of gruesome humor, along with the realistic snapshots of the ogre's life, will provide many hours of entertainment and enjoyment to all those who are ready to experience the adventure. Everyone will fall in love with this oversized and grotesque, but playful, ogre as they scour each marvelous and explosive work of art! (Ages 6 and older)

This book is the best book I've ever read! I love the colorful illustrations. I can't believe how good this book was. I don't read picture books most of the time but this one is unusually outstanding! The pictures are amazingly superb! I would give this book 10 stars, if I could.

Fans of Prelutsky and fans of Zelinsky, rejoice! This devoutly-to-be-wished combination comes off just as well as you might imagine. It really does present a day in the life of a one-eyed ogre in poems and pictures. And by all means, read it out loud! It's so much more fun that way. My favorite -- "When elves and gnomes encounter me, / They often shriek, `Grotesque!' / I bow with magnanimity / And murmur, `Statuesque!' " And the pictures! There are a lot of things going on in the four-color pictures. And kids will have fun finding them all! Some of the language is hilariously gross and disgusting -- and not for the squeamish! Prelutsky obviously has always loved the sound of words -- and big ones, at that. And as always, he doesn't write DOWN to kids. There is a glorious perfection in his rhythms. Kids will love to grimace and wince along with the gory subject matter. This book is so much fun!

Fun, Fun, Fun!

What a terrific, fun, lively book! As much fun for me and my husband to read as it is for our son to have it read to him. Even though he is still small, he loves the rhyming cadence of it and the pictures. A nice change from Dr. Seuss - I just love Awful Ogre! Especially when he dances...or courts a grrrrl...or goes out to dinner...

This book would be a terrific addition to any childs library.

I really enjoyed this book. The book started off a little slow for me, but after two chapters I found it very engaging. The second section was particularly practical. It helped me to reconsider how I look at spiritual growth. To often my Christian life has been more talk than walk. This book encouraged me to live a more compelling life.

An inspiring, challenging book that reminds us not to take our faith for granted. It offers new perspectives on some of the ruts we tend to fall into, yet keeps to the truth of the Word of God. It challenges us to be completely abandoned to the will of God and to fulfill his calling on our life. One of the best lines from the beginning of the book was that people don't remember you for what you don't do, they remember you for what you do. Christians we are called to action. Let this book encourage you on your journey of being used by God in the way that he created you for. See what God will do!

Oh what a beautiful fight it is, to be transformed

"Beautiful" and "fight," they're two words you don't see together often. Yet in Gary Thomas' latest book The Beautiful Fight they are strung together most excellently. Thomas, adjunct professor at Western Seminary and award winning author, is drawing his title from the Orthodox Fathers' reading of 2nd Timothy 4:7-8. This text, more commonly translated as "the good fight," is aptly illustrated by Thomas as something of furious beauty.

The Christian spiritual life is the common denominator throughout the three sections and16 chapters. Thomas does this by fusing together the genius and wisdom of biblical passages, church fathers (such as Clement of Alexandria and Athanasius), medieval mystics (Julian of Norwich), Puritan divines (John Flavel), along with contemporary voices like J.I. Packer, N.T. Wright, and John Piper. One thing, that's evident even at a glance, is that Thomas' thoughts on the Christian spiritual life aren't monochrome. He doesn't confine himself to the contemporary--a common error in American evangelicalism--neither does he stick to a particular theological tradition, nor one aspect of the Christian spiritual life. Instead Thomas, with a discerning ecumenism, shows that the essential witness of Christian spirituality is one of harmony. With this in mind, he writes, "Christian Spirituality is all about [...] our Creator and Lord taking ordinary people and making them potent instruments of God."

In Beautiful Fight Thomas answers the call which many Christians are longing for. That is, what does it mean to have an embodied and active faith. He does this by weaving in life-stories from his time at Regent College to his life as a husband and father. Because of his integration of life and thought the reader feels that the book is at least in part an invitation into a dialogue on, about and over the Christian spiritual life. And it's a conversation that is of the utmost importance; every where we turn, it seems, there is another front page article on `spirituality' or another book on the `spirituality of (fill in the blank).' In a world where everyone from Oprah to your local barista is a `spirituality' expert it is refreshing to hear a voice which articulates a Holy Spirit-uality. But if The Beautiful Fight is a cultural critique, it's also a critique of a lifeless orthodoxy; that's one thing that permeates every page--and it's one of the many things that will stick with you.

This newest book from one of Evangelicalism's finest authors on spiritual formation, Gary Thomas, is excellent - one of the best books I've read this year. Thomas takes a fresh look at living a God-empowered life that is grounded in the doctrine of Christ's bodily ascension. Drawing on insights from Evangelical, Reformed, Orthodox, and Catholic traditions, Thomas shows how God's presence can change the way we use our eyes and ears, hands and feet, minds and hearts. The Beautiful Fight is a beautiful book about a beautiful spirituality of "full-bodied faith." I could barely put this book down and walked away freshly convicted, challenged, and encouraged. Having now read several of Thomas's books, I think this is my favorite to date. Treat yourself to a banquet of spiritual delights and get this book!

My 2 year old is crazy about Bing Bunny and the adorable Flop! The stories are so appropriate and appeal directly to the toddler mind; calling to attention all the things that toddlers' notice. The crisis concerning the loss of Flop in Bing Bed Time is especially important: one cannot go to bed without Flop! (or in our case, Dee). We plan to purchase all the books. Great quality and excellent illustrations!

I wish Bing were as popular in America as Barney is. These books are a hoot and my son just can't get enough of them. I checked all 8 out from the library and had to end up buying them.

Bing is a bunny who interacts with his stuffed animal Flop. The books show Bing learning colors, foods, potty training, etc., all in the course of a day.

Adults will enjoy the '60s vibe of the cars, houses and furniture in the books.

Maybe an animated Bing show in America will make these books as popular as they deserve to be.

We love the Bing Books!

The Bing Bunny books appeal to both my 4-year-old and my 1-year-old. They're simple in format and style but manage to ably relay the oh-so-important-for-kids message that it's okay to make mistakes. "Paint Day" is held together by the repeated refrain of, "Don't spill the water, Bing!" Of course, he does eventually spill that water, but it's okay - it's a Bing thing. In "Bing Gets Dressed", Bing labors to get himself all dressed and then wets his pants. It's a sweet and accepting message for little kids who do make mistakes and need to hear that these things happen. We all love Bing - one read and you just can't help it.

This book is a larger-sized hardback with flaps to open. That alone I thought would pull our 3 yr old son in and make this one of his fave books. But not so. He'll read through it with me, but doesn't pick it on his own. Maybe it's because he already knows many of the concepts and he tends to prefer realistic colorful illustrations. Maybe better for a 2 yr old? Very nicely produced, good quality pages and printing.

We selected this book to win the Caldecott award in my school because it is beautiful and my whole class can't stop looking at it. Even though we are in fifth grade, this is a picture book for all ages because it has something for everyone. Little kids can learn their opposites and older kids can see how cool it is that the author was able to make each page interesting and fun.

Seeger's work looks deceptively simple but is more often than not quite surprising.

Black White Day Night is another lift-the-flap book of opposites that lives up to her other lift-the-flap projects: The Hidden Alphabet and Lemons are Not Red.

Her bright and unfussy illustrations appeal to children and the cleverness of her designs will appeal to adults. I always find myself genuinely surprised when looking through her books which strike me as being very well-thought out and conceptualized.

Just to let you know, there is a new edition of this book available; The DNA Selling Method: Strategies for Modern-day Sales People (From Great Moments in History).

I'm not active in sales myself at the moment, but I can see the importance of the lessons in this book. I know I learned much more in the section about presenting than I ever did in my college speech class.

The way Mr. Hansen compares selling strategies to historical stories makes reading the book, and remembering the details, very easy and enjoyable. He doesn't try to complicate things with so many modules and formulas etc., instead telling things as they are. By giving examples, historic and personal, and explaining his reasoning, you feel more inclined to follow his advice than if he just said 'do this' (the 'because I say so' kind of a deal like you get in many textbooks).

The DNA Selling method itself is simple, straightforward -- and extremely important.

Discovery-Qualification
Need-Problem
Ascertain-Pain

Basically; make sure the prospect is qualified (by asking essential discovery questions), find out what they need, see how much it would hurt them to not purchase what you are offering.... Mr. Hansen includes many sample questions and scenarios so you can pick the ones that fit you (and your company) best.

This book encompasses all the elements in the DNA Selling method, but there are three more books where Mr. Hansen takes important parts of the cycle to go into more detail:
Power Prospecting (From Great Moments in History)
Winning Sales Presentations: Presentation Strategies for Modern-day Sales People (From Great Moments in History)
Sales-side Negotiation: Negotiation Strategies for Modern-day Sales People (From Great Moments in History)

I actually read this book a few weeks ago and am purchasing it for a colleague.

This book is phenomenal. The sales methodology taught in this book is absolutely priceless. When I engage with clients, I now do so with purpose and clarity. I am able to gain the knowledge I need to effectively move my prospect to the next level in the buying process while keeping the customer confident and comfortable in their buying experience.

The DNASelling method, in particular, is the most brilliant qualifying and interviewing strategy I've seen. However, it's not for the casual sales rep. I know from experience. I consider myself fortunate to have been involved in a training that Mr. Hansen conducted. He trained our entire sales organization in The DNASelling method and it was immediately obvious who implemented the training and who didn't. 6 months after his training, the top 7 reps were all diehard users of Mr. Hansen's system. For anyone who has read this book, they will tell you that it is for elite sales professionals, not average sales representatives.

I do not recommend this book for someone looking for the traditional fluffy, "motivational" milquetoast sales book. This guy is hard core about winning and he outlines exactly how to do it.

Take it to the next level.

I have read dozens of sales books and there are counter-intuitive principles in this book that you simply won't find anywhere else. Plus, I really enjoyed the historical examples, they are entertaining and easy to remember.

Summary of the book

Review Date: 2008-03-31
Growing up in Lima, Ohio during the Depression Era was a time of great adventures for Duke Murray! In these affectionate memoirs, Duke (aka. Dr. Emmett Murray, a retired family physician), tells 35 favorite stories from his boyhood years in the Midwest.
After some early mishaps, Duke's entry into grade school opens new worlds of enjoyment. Horace Mann Grade School and its vast playgrounds get long and affectionate descriptions. Adventures on his own find Duke up at dawn to watch the Big Top circuses set up, hauling huge ice blocks while working at Lima Ice and Coal, training the family beagle to hunt and to win show prizes, and taking X-rays of steel castings at a tank plant. Duke helps an eccentric neighbor go after night crawlers, and he faces death and family alcoholism in a school friend's life.
The book conveys the atmosphere of daily life in the 1930s, and Murray's contemporaries will find many a brand name and Age of Radio show to identify with. But Duke Murray goes beyond these to describe also the sounds, the tastes and the smells of the time. "Saturday Night in Lima, 1930s Style" is a golden example of his talent for evoking atmosphere.
Murray communicates a special fascination with life on the farm and the industry and humor of farming people. He describes the big meals, the homemade ice cream and grapes from the arbor. But his fondest memories are of making hay, raising chickens, cattle and hogs, and watching his aunts put up canned food stores for company in the days before modern refrigeration.
The book goes on to describe the dawning realization by America of the inevitability of World War II, and the rather frightening experiences of enlistment and service by all the three Murray sons in the U.S. Army. The book's chronology ends with Duke Murray in medical school, entertaining himself by winning a tall tale radio contest in Columbus, and singing barbershop quartets with his dissecting partners over their cadaver.
These tales will be especially enjoyed by fans of Lima and Allen County, who will respond with glee to references such as the Lima Rescue Mission and the Kewpie Hamburger Restaurant. However, the stories are more than local memoirs in that they evoke the 1930s overall, and depict the universal struggles of a young person learning to fill his shoes in America.
The book includes a map of Duke's old neighborhood, his immediate family tree, an appreciation of his storytelling history, and contact information. Come Reminisce with Me sounds a note of optimism with its attitude that life presents experiences from which lessons may often be derived. Dr. Murray shows that happiness and laughter can happen anywhere, and that life may not be perfect, but that it still offers a lot to enjoy, appreciate and be grateful for at every turn.

I must confess that my initial interest in "Come Reminisce with Me" was one of local history. But what I discovered was something deeper than descriptions of Lima, Ohio in the 1930s. Murray's simple style and delicious imagery of youthful experiences took me back to a time in my own life when each day was a new adventure. These memories are intricately woven with humor and humility, joy and compassion, leading the reader through youthful rites of passage on the road to evolving maturity.

Scholarly, thorough, interesting, heavily footnoted, great bibliography,
but most important of all, written with the devotion of a man committed
to the truth and accuracy of Holy Scripture.

This is THE book to get on the subject of the temple.

This book will satisfy both the general reader and the scholars.
Actually, you may want to just use it as a reference, as I do,
Because if you read it all the way through, you may go blind!

Major Flaws: Type is TOO SMALL...this book should have been published
in 9x6" format. The notes in the back are so small, I can't even read
them! The subject index in the back has subcatagories which makes no
sense because you can't really look anything up, unless it happens
to be one of the main words! I hope they republish this and fix all
that.

Oh yeah, the cover art is SUPER COOL! :-)

This is the best Randall Price book todate. His research and commitment to preparing this incrediable book is tremendous. The documentation and placement of scripture references are so helpful. This temple study leaves all others behind. Its easy to read yet at a sufficent intellectual level to keep you glued to each word. I also use it consistantly as an on-going bibical reference.

This has truly been not only an inspirational guide, but one filled with the structure to have a very solid and intimate relationship with God. Jesus Maymi does a phenomenal job laying the foundation and then giving the reader the tools and motivation to build their lives around it. It makes the struggle of spiritual discipline a conquerable giant and provides strength along the way. Great source for any man wanting a structured relationship with God.

As a Christian woman, I can truly say that I was inspired by the words and bible passages in this book. It is easy to see that both the author and the book have been blessed by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This book is a perfect companion to reading the Bible, especially for a beginner who is starting to study The Word. Enjoy this book and be blessed.

Jesus (Jay) Maymi's groundbreaking work has truly enriched my life: Jay has captured the essence of today's man's trials and tribulations. His work has allowed me to address the battle between living a good Christian life and being successful in business. You truly can follow Jesus Christ and through Jay's insights be motivated to follow the "Living Word." I appreciate Jay both as a Christian, successful businessman and a true friend. I recommend this book to any individual who has ever struggled to find their way in this world of ours!

Jay Maymi, in A Common Man's Devotional, really encourages and motivates believers to seek more of God as well as acting out your faith daily. The devotions help to keep believers focused each day on what is important and they serve to bring the person's mind and heart back to God no matter how busy our day may be. I enjoyed the rich simplicity of the devotions and I know that this book will bring hope and encouragement to the person in need. It is indeed a work of God.

Thank you Mark and Bruce for putting together the book "Conquering Depression". I believe it to be the best and most practical book I have ever read on the subject. For once I have found a book outlining a workable program, that develops tangible skills, and that forges and sharpens mighty weapons to defeat and overcome depression. A book that addresses the tri-part nature of man: his spirit, his soul (mind, will and emotions) and his body. I am convinced that should people who suffer the dreadful effects of despair and depression follow the 30 day program outlined in your book, they will be empowered to overcome and defeat their depression. Again, well done !

Mark Sutton and Bruce Hennigan do a great job of explaining some of the many possible causes for depression as well as steps to take in overcoming it. I discovered that a person may battle depression on a daily basis, but it can be overcome. The Life Filters are great! Written from a compassionate viewpoint, this book will help you with depression if you are willing to work and apply its suggestions.

This book is VERY helpful. It's both scripturally and medically educating. To complement each day's reading, in the back of the book are daily perforated cards with the scripture and memory joggers for the day. Well-written by 2 men who still face depression, but don't let it overtake them. I'm on day 22 today. The card says "LifeFilter 22 / I Can Dilute My Depression through Sharing / "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety" (Proverbs 11:14). On the back it says "Today / 1. Remeber: God does not want me to be alone in this world. That's why he is always with me. / 2. I resolve to leave isolation and share meaningfully with some positive, wise Christians. / 3. If necessary, I will find a godly counselor and let him/her partner with me in overcoming my depression." It's a cool approach and has taught me a lot. This and "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" are the books that have helped me the most. That along with medication, counseling, time, and talking things out with friends. There is hope. You want there to be hope. You can have a life again.

First I'd like to say that if I could give more than 5 stars, I would for this book. This book is a wonderful book on how to conquer depression, an illness that has plagued me for over 9 years. It is written by two professionals who both are strong Christians and both have suffered from depression which makes you know they understand what you are going through and there is hope. I also appreciated the fact that I didn't have to sift through what I felt was Scriptural and what I felt wasn't as this book is very Biblically based and glorifies God throughout the whole book. If you are suffering, have suffered, or know someone who is suffering from Depression please purchase this book for them. I only wish I had found it years ago when I went through my first major depression.

Wonderful book!

This book is really great! When I was first diagnosed with depression, I didn't understand a lot about it. This book really helped me to understand what was going on with me emotionally and understand what was chemically going on in my body. When the authors say they understand where you're at, they really do! They've been there too. From a Christian perspective, this book is very bibically based. It is the best book I've found on depression yet, at least from a Christian perspective.
