Day Books

I thought the first story was great. The characters were funny when they found out they were married to each other. They could not keep there hands off one another. The herione was very bold with the sex which is a change from most of what I read. I enjoyed every page of that. The second was not that well written to much obsession the male character had and there was just sex. to me it was boring. The third was better it was the brother of the heroine in the second story. He gets caught up in a storm
and meets charlette and falls for her. I enjoyed them. this is a first for Day for me.

The first story really set me in the mood for all the remaining stories. These were warm, sensual and a lot of fun.

Bad Boys Ahoy! by Sylvia Day has three erotic historical romance short stories. They all are contected but each had a different theme. Stolen Pleasures is a pirate story. Lucien's Gamble is a story of man who owns a gambling business and sister who is trying to save her brother Hugh. This one was my favorite!. Her Mad Grace is the story of Hugh and Charolotte who has lost of secret and treasure map.

I enjoyed the first two stories the most. The third story was a little odd but good.

4 stars for STOLEN PLEASURES. Sebastian left home to be a pirate five years ago. His father, an earl, made a marriage agreement for a cousin to pretend to be Sebastian and marry Olivia. They married, but Olivia has not yet met the cousin. On her way to England by ship, Sebastian takes over the ship carrying Olivia and learns that she is married to his name. Setting: 1813 British West Indies and England.

4 stars for LUCIEN'S GAMBLE. Julienne goes to a gambling/prostitution place to find her brother. The owner is Lucien, a bastard, but rich. Lucien has many women in his life. Julienne and Lucien fall in love, but she fears he will always want other women so she refuses to marry him. Setting: 1810 London.

3 stars for HER MAD GRACE. Hugh has carriage accident in a snow storm and must take shelter in home of Charlotte. Charlotte married an old man in name only to be able to care for his granddaughter. Charlotte and Hugh fall in love. She won't marry him because she fears he's not reliable and can't support her, the granddaughter and the handicapped servants. Setting: 1814 Derbyshire, England.

Received it as a gift and it sits on my coffee table (always viewed by guests). I bought it for my stepdad who said "It's a great toilet book--I read an entry every day."

I purchased this as a gift for a friends 15 year old daughter (who has become a huge Beatles fan). When she opened it up, her eyes said it all...she absolutely loved the photo's and the captions for each picture. I thought it was literally one page/ picture for each day of the calendar year...so I went to look for June 15...and it wasn't there, but there were about 4 pages on June 8. So it does add up to 365 days and crosses the years from 1964-1970, but if you are like me and wanted to see what the Beatles were doing on your birthday, you might not get to find out. But it's a great book and a great gift.

This book is an absolute treasure and worth every penny of the steep price I payed for it.The pictures are large and extremely high quality and most of them are in vivid color.Another wonderful thing is the fact that they are in chronological order,almost day by day from the end of 1962 to 1970.This is perfect for students of the Beatles because it gives an accurate visual history of the band to suppliment all of the written histories.This leads me to another important point.Anyone with eyes knows that not only is the music great but The Fab Four were indeed VERY nice to look at!And I don't think you have to be a woman,as I most certainly am,to notice that!This book is alot of fun.Because of the date order you see that Paul is wearing the same shirt almost two days in a row on their 1966 American tour!Wonder what happened?! Didn't Neil get to the local cleaners?No clean shirts left?I bet Paul was less than thrilled.To see their clothing styles change every 6 months or so is also interesting.The pictures of the concerts are fantastic especially the color ones.Some of them are large closeups.It also includes some of Bob Whiticker's beautiful photos.He took some of the best pictures of the Fabs and I don't mean the silly Butcher shots.This book should be in every Beatlemaniac's collection.

Besides the scriptures, this is one of the most valuable books out there. It's a true gem and a masterpiece. Stephen Robinson did an excellent job explaining the beauty and the simplicity of the Atonement of Christ. It's something I should have gleaned from the scriptures myself, but admittedly there is much I did not understand (or at least wasn't able to articulate very well) before reading this book.

What makes the book so powerful is that Robinson explains it on layman's, that is my terms. He starts out discussing the consequences of sin and mortality and then discusses grace, faith and works. Then he sheds more light on the Atonement and what Christ did, how and why. And most importantly, Robinson does and excellent job articulating what it all means for you and I and how we can take advantage of these great mercies and gifts offered to us by our loving Heavenly Father.

I re-read this book quite often and take it with me on business. I have given away a number of copies of this book to friends and strangers on the plane. This is one of those book that is truly life changing and I would recommend to anyone without hesitation.

I don't normally read LDS literature not written by a general authority of the church, but this is quite the exception. I enjoyed this author's speaches at both Ricks College and BYU- Provo. If you ever felt overwhelmed or inferior in the Gospel, please take a few hours and read this book. It will change your perspective.

Though the author cites Mormon scripture as well as the Bible, don't let that put you off. If he had only cited Old and New Testament scriptures, the result would be the same: a wonderful explanation of Christ's Grace and where works comes into the picture, repentance, and how Jesus infinite atonement brings us back to Him. Justice and mercy are compared beautifully, and the Love of Christ comes through like a sun bursting over the horizon.

I recommend this book for anyone who is struggling with issues of their own unworthiness and the possibility of redemption. A brilliant and thoughtful book.

I'm a recent convert and an avid reader of books. So I don't say "This is the best book I've ever read" very often. I read 4 books in the month before I converted (wanted to make sure this was the right decision). This one was recommended by a friend at church and it has changed my life.

This book introduced me to the real Jesus Christ. I've heard about him my entire life. I've met people who love him beyond measure. I've met people who don't believe he ever existed. But I had never met anyone who could explain to me who he really was. I never really understood what he did, what he continues to do, what I should think of him or how he is supposed to fit into my life. If you truely seek to know Jesus Christ, READ THIS BOOK!

This book will explain how to get rid of the baggage you carry around with you that keeps you depressed and feeling like a failure. It will change your mind and your heart and fill it with hope. Don't give up on life until you've read it. It's one of the most influential books you will ever read.

"Bullwhip Days - The Slaves Remember, An Oral History" is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of slavery in America. It is edited by James Mellon. But with respect to Mr. Mellon, it is not his story.

During the Great Depression, the US government created work programs for a besieged economy. One of these was the Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Someone realized that the last generation of African Americans who had been slaves was dying. Writers were dispatched to interview these ex-slaves and record/write their stories.

This work is a selection of transcripts from these vital historical records.

It is suspected some of the slaves may have moderated their comments to appease the interviewers sensibilities. I really doubt that. Having read a number of personal memoirs of people in their later years, I find their candor amazing. Just because an ex-slave speaks fondly of their former owner does not mean they are lying or have skewed perceptions.

There's no definitive slave experience. We have the account of one woman owned by the Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander Stephens on a plantation operating entirely by slaves (including the overseers). Another woman agrees to be bred only because her `kind' master had agreed to buy her in addition to her parents.

One elderly couple had diametrically opposite experiences. She had an idyllic family existence with gifts and new clothes for Christmas. He was separately from his parents as a child, starved and beaten. Decades later, he hears of a child abused like himself. Despite being elderly, he and his wife take the boy and raise him as their own.

There is one major theme through the interviews. How a slave was treated was entirely a function of their owner. They had no rights, no recourse to the law. If caught without a pass, you were fair game for the infamous "paddyrollers" (patrollers). Even after freedom, the Ku Klux Klan terrorized the fomer slave population.

Another thing that I found interesting was the mortality rate after slavery. In multiple interviews, these old people were alone with no children or grandchildren surviving. A lifetime of slavery did not equip them well for freedom.

This is the first book I would recommend to anyone interested in the subject.

I have used this book as part of my Black history classes for 5 years now. It would be impossible to make up the stories that actually happened to a people held against their will and it is riveting to read about the memories and nightmares. This book gives a name to slaves, personalizes it and makes the suffering immortal. These recollections, though they belonged to individuals, makes the suffering universal. The experience of one is the experience of all. But yet, these people on occasion find some humor in various memories and you can share there collective joy over 150 years later. I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just students and historians.

I first read this book back in 1991. Even today, I will occasionally reread it. It is very informative and very much real. I can truly say that I love this book and this is a must have. You will truly enjoy it. My people have come a long way.

Wow...That's all I can say. This is a wonderful book and a must read for everyone. I read this as part of a book club discussion for Black History Month. What a way to open my eyes to a part of American history. Very moving.

This is the real deal. Ex-slaves telling their own experiences; a few not-so-bad, many extremely heartbreaking. This is one of the best insights into what slavery was really like during the 19th Century. This is the story, in there own words, of how a people were totally dehumanized during America's most shameful period. A country claiming "liberty and justice for all" while denying that freedom to millions of fellow human beings. And many still ask the question, "why do African-Americans still lag behind in so many areas, while other ethnic groups had to struggle as immigrants also?" This book is a reminder that blacks were forcibly brought here, and denied-for-years even the simplest education. Maybe the reading of this book, will help some realize the continual uphill struggle, blacks have tried to achieve in a few short decades since the Civil Rights Movement. Trying to make-up for Centuries of bondage, and inequality. Just as we can never forget the evils of the Holocaust, so it should be equaly true with the era of slavery.

This is a very nice manual of catholic traditions that can be incorporated into everyday life. My husband and I were looking for something like this as we both weren't raised with any Catholic traditions and hope to raise our kids with a very Catholic home. This is a great starting point, and has a lot of interesting ideas that I had never heard of.

I love this book! I grew up in a Catholic family and in Catholic schools. However, that did not prepare me for passing along Catholic traditions to my own children and to my converted husband. The fear of offending anyone(especially my non-Catholic relatives) made me a little hesitant to "let religious identity permeate our home". Gould's book encourages and instructs on how to do so. She has specific ideas, traditions, and even recipes for living a richer life within the Church.

Meredith Gould has done a great job of bringing together traditions from all around the world, and offering these as ways to grow in true faith, not just more items on holiday to-do lists. Her suggestions for Lenten prayer are particularly valuable. Written in a clear, concise, and humorous style, this compact book has earned its place as a family reference.

If you are interested in Catholic customs and traditions for your family, this is a wonderful book. Full of interesting facts for different feast days and practical ways to celebrate in the home. A wonderful tool for the family or individual!

I used to read this book as a child at my Grandparents home during the holidays. I know others in the family have "dibs" on this book...so I've bought my own! It will become part of our family tradition to read this through the holiday season as well.

This is a great book to own and read every year. I love the moral of the book...don't judge a book by its cover! We also made a cranberry recipe (although not the one in the book)... it was fun and memorable!

This book has been a favorite in my family since my three children were little; we always read it at Thanksgiving time and made the special Cranberry bread, which is really delicious! Now that my children are grown up with children of their own, they are continuing the tradition. A very special book!

This book is very charming indeed! Maggie is a delightful young girl that knows looks aren't everything and befriends a man not based on his looks but based on his need for a friend. And when things start to fall apart at the Thanksgiving dinner she holds everyone together. I read this book to my children and we all loved it and are grateful to know there are others like it.

It is a great book that brings about the true spirit of thanksgiving with a little lesson thrown in, and the basis of the book...the secret Cranberry Bread recipe...is a delightful way to tie-in these fun and whimsical characters. And, to my delight, the recipe is included at the back of the book!

Great for parents to read and great for children to read!

This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. I loved the story tremendously, and the illustrations were mesmorizing. It always would put me in the mood for Thanksgiving, any time of year! I still read it today, and the pictures bring me back to a wonderful time. All of Harry Devlin's books are fantastic...and the Cranberry series is a must for children of all ages.

I couldn't put the book down from beginning to end. I was stirred by the lack of awareness I had about the tensions between Polish people and those who were of Jewish descent. So much so that it made me think about the levels of anti-Semitism that still exist today. It raised the issue of how we need to continue educating our children to be mindful of what they've gained through the pains of our ancestors and that they still bear a responsibility to learn and keep watch while also (as seen through Ellen's and Marek's relationship) stay open to others' plights.
The second emotion I had was the impact of the loss of living European ancestors on our newer generation. How much of our strength and humor have provided us backbone from the immigrants, and their Yiddish, as seen through the translations of Rafael's and Friedl's words that are lost to our children of today.
Finally, the meaning of beshert is fully appreciated as these three generations are left to individually and silently confront their faith and relationship with G-d.
Thank you Ms. Rosenbaum for a wonderful book. I hope you write others and will look for them.

Rarely do I come upon a book that is readable, lyrical,charming, and an example of good literature. Rosenbaum's book is one. Her novel will not be a challenge for the average reader. Yet, the strong reader will be able to enjoy the lyrical language and the various levels of meaning the book offers. We meet Itzik the patriarch, Nathan, the very assimilated American born Jew, Ellen, Nathan's daughter, Friedl, a spirit who can find no rest, Rafael, the last Jew in Zokof, and Marek, Ellen's Klezmer playing Polish boyfriend. The story opens with Itzik fleeing from Zocof after breaking Friedl's tombstone and ends by an attempt to reconcile Poland's terrible history of anti-semitism and its Jewish heritage through art. The author uses techniques of magical realism, Jewish mysticism, character soul searching, Yiddish cadences, Yiddish phrases and romance to take the reader on a wild ride. Friedl's spirit cannot rest until she fulfills the prophecy inherited by all Jewish women. She must pass down Jewish traditions and history to the next generation. With the ghost as a literary device the author reveals the importance of passing on one's history and especially an ethnic history to the next generation. So many immigrants tried to abolish their ethnicities upon landing on these shores. So much history was lost as recent immigrants tried to become "real Americans." With this novel the author is telling us that our immigrant histories are part of the American experience. As such they should be treasured and revered. I did not want this book to end. It is both an immigrant story and a holocaust story. It is a tale both of scholarship and performance, of curse and redemption. To call it a ghost story is an oversimplification of the role played by Friedl's spirit.

I really loved the family story behind this book. Every character was beautifully developed and compelling. The book has its own momentum, taking the reader from generation to generation, leaving you wanting to know more at the end of each chapter. I didn't want it to end - how about a sequel?

Mazel Tov! to Lisa Pearl Rosenbaum. This novel is a wonderful, thoughtful, finely woven, well-researched, beautifully-written read.
The stories, the characters, generational connections and variances, the mystical and the struggles all resonated with me. I especially related to the questions asked by Nathan and Ellen in their wrestling and the wisdom offered them.
A neighbor, who had a copy for her book group, loaned it to me. Wanting a copy of my own, I bought one the day after completing it.

My mother recommended this book. Said she couldn't put it down, so I bought a copy. I struggled a bit with the first chapter, but once the story got going I really got pulled in and also found that I couldn't put it down.
Maybe it helps to say that my father's family came from northern Poland, that I am the president of a landsmanschaft (organization of Jews who came from that particular area) and an amateur Jewish genealogist, and also administer the cemeteries for my landsmanschaft, so this story struck many personal chords for me.
It is very well written for a first novel, well produced, richly imagined. At times the dialogue becomes heavily didactic, but not so much as to detract from the overall thrust of the story.

This is a great, straightforward reference. It covers everything any person needs to know about dining etiquette without any useless "filler" material. The audio format is great and the speaker is one of the best I have listen to.

After a few months as a first year associate at my law firm, one of my former law school classmates told me that their firm had sent its new associates to an etiquette class. I decided that it might be a good idea for me to brush up on my etiquette skills as well, so I purchased this CD and also the Food Scholar Wine Basics CD. I recommend both for new professionals to prepare them for any "dining" situation they may encounter in their first jobs. These situations frequently fall into the "you don't know what you don't know" category of student knowledge.

I, for one, had very little experience in more formal dining situations upon graduating from school. This CD was just what I needed to get myself up-to-speed. It is well-organized and well-presented, covering a number of very specific situations that convey the elements of common sense and consideration that underlie all etiquette.

The author thankfully avoids spending time on how to arrange the seating at a state dinner. What he offers is practical, usable advice on the types of real social interactions that occur in all kinds of business. A very useful CD and well worth the price. Definitely five stars.

I will be graduating from college this year and have started to interview for jobs. I have a decent GPA, am in the career placement office every week for advice, and have spent hours polishing my resume. I thought that I had all my bases covered. Then I started actually interviewing for jobs. I have already had three interviews that included meals and two "mixers" with drinks and appetizers. It was a little overwhelming. I could tell there was an order to things I did not completely understand. A friend recommended this Dining Etiquette CD, so I ordered it. I had yet another meal during an interview after listening to it. It made a big difference. Knowing what to do at every turn during the meal was a confidence booster and I am sure it helped me appear more polished and professional. I HIGHLY recommend it, Two Thumbs Up.

A good etiquette book should sit on every professional's bookshelf alongside "how to win friends" and "7 habits." I purchased this book along with Essential Etiquette Fundamentals, Vol. 2: Wine Selection & Etiquette and The Etiquette Edge: The Unspoken Rules for Business Success to cover all the bases. These books do an excellent job covering the important etiquette skills often overlooked in today's environment. Although often underappreciated, exhibiting proper etiquette signals to others (especially your boss and clients) that you are well educated, care about detail, and have respect for others. I highly recommend these books for anyone new to the business world or for those of us who may need to brush up on the basics.

The last book on CD my wife and I bought was terrible: mens' voices for female characters, etc. And what's the alternative on the radio? Pop music or Howard Stern? I spend twenty percent of my waking life in my car. I might as well spend it wisely. The Food Scholar is easy listening and presented in a way that makes the information easy to learn and remember.

What a wonderful Book!!! Bought it a few years ago and have read it from cover to cover a few times. When I get into a funk with my relationship, I go back to the book and it helps to shed some light into my dark mood. It brings me back to a good spirit that I know that this is not only happening to me but to others has well. I totally recommend buying this and read it when you think you are in a bad relationship and want out. This book totally helped me see that I too can survive. Many of these stories help me and I can relate to many events that are told in the book. Thanks so much Nancy for writing this book. Are you writing a 2nd book?

By page 8 I was laughing, by page 9 I was teary. By page 87 I was laughing so hard I was crying. This book has ideas and thoughts for everyone from the newlywed to the veterans of marriage. The message is as the author admits delivered very breezily but the message is one that anyone invloved with marriage or partnership should stop and think about. Hugely entertaining, and an eaasy read. Each chapter takes only 5 -10 minutes to read. Put a copy in your car, next time you have to wait somewhere 10 minutes you will be well entertained.

This is the most wise and honest look at love and long term relationships I've ever read. Not only did I give this book as a Valentine's gift to both my mother and my boyfriend's mother, but I've actually typed up essays in it to share with friends via email. I love this book. It is so beautifully written; it brought me to laughter and moved me to tears.

I hate trying to accurately review a book like this because it is a very enjoyable read with some great advice for young couples, but should be read with caution. EVERY DAY I LOVE YOU MORE, JUST NOT TODAY, by Nancy Shulins is a very well written book and could serve as a great resource for couples, but could also cause a certain degree of damage.

I say that because, Shulins, for all her brilliance as a writer, allows her obvious somewhat angry feminist side to surface in her work. It seems every few chapters, Shulins is unable to contain herself and partakes in a good dose of "male bashing", that detracts greatly from an otherwise excellent book. Don't get me wrong, I'm the first to admit that we men have far more shortcomings than any our over-inflated egos will allow us to admit, and I'm sure Shulins transgressions upon the male gender was not written to cause harm, I'm afraid doey eyed young brides might mistake her assaults and use them to actually do harm to their otherwise unblemished view of their respective `knights in shining armor'.

These likely innocent assaults seem rather out of context for a book seeking to strengthen marriages. I have seen many an enamored young bride succumb to the peer pressure placed upon them by their friends who take solace in getting together for an occasional husband-bashing orgy. The young bride is easily influenced and soon finds herself damaging her marriage because she thinks public degradation of her spouse is not only appropriate, but also expected! This is the kind of coaching young brides don't need, and certainly not from a book designed to enhance the marriage.

I must emphasize, however, this is an otherwise great book. There is some wonderful advice here for young couples, just please try and overlook, or at least not take out of context, the damaging assaults.

"Every Day I Love You More (just not today)" is a collection of essays about Nancy Shulins' marriage (and those of her family and friends) that demonstrates lessons in loving one partner for life. Right away, you feel drawn in by the essays, as if you're reading the juicy diary of a friend. You're also aware you're learning something from this friend - a very wise one with secrets to share and advice that is enlightening - but never preachy. You're laughing and nodding your head in mute agreement and wondering if the author has been spying on your own marriage and you're thinking, "Why didn't I think of that?" when Shulins suggests ideas that strike you as profoundly life and marital changing.

Each vignette in this perfectly sized volume highlights a different aspect of married life, from first date to the ultimate, joyful realization that you and your partner will be together for life. I gleaned much from this book: how to call back that "first date" feeling, when to accept that which you cannot change about a partner, how to look for the special, unexpected moments that appear everyday in a marriage and how to deal with the force of incompatibility, happily.

I bought an extra copy of this book for a friend because my husband is now reading "Every Day I Love You More (just not today)". This is the first book my husband and I have ever shared; the book is working its magic already.

I love Get Fuzzy cartoons and I absolutely can't live without the 365 days a year calendar. Each day depicts another glimpse into the lives of Satchel and Bucky which in some small way always reminds me of my 3 Girls (Suzie, Trixie and Gracie). We can't help but relate to the lives of Bucky and Satchel since they always seem to hit upon something that happens in our own lives.

Get Fuzzy is something that can always be counted on to make me laugh. Sometimes out loud. Other times it just makes me grin. No matter what it always lifts my mood. Getting a new strip everyday is even better so the day to day calender is great. It is also nice that the strips are run in order so the small stories in the strip do not get messed up and are all the more funny when they are linked together the right way.

I am a tremendous lover of Bucky Katt. It is wonderful to have a Get Fuzzy comic to wake up to every day. I highly recommend buying this page-a-day calendar so that you can get that humorous lift to start your day.

A constant - as time itself ... every day Rob, Sachel and Bucky cat deliver something that helps the days beginnings.... its addictive as coffee and a donut ... but more healthy...

Darby Conley must be an animal lover, or has grown up with cats & dogs all his life. His 'animal' wit is astounding. Satchel is simply lovable Bucky Cat is, well, as sarcastic as a cat can be. If you want to have a LOL day, every day, this is a must for any desk top.
